Creative Mackintosh Festival
www.glasgowmackintosh.com
Welcome
to Glasgow’s first
Creative Mackintosh Festival
Barcelona has Gaudi, Chicago has Frank Lloyd
Wright and Glasgow has the unique legacy of
Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
Mackintosh, one of The Glasgow Four, helped
to take art and architecture into the modern
era and was a crucial figure in the explosion
of creativity that characterises Art Nouveau in
the early part of the 20th century.
Over the space of two weeks we invite you to join the celebration
of this exciting heritage.
The Festival – which we hope will be the first of many – crosses genres,
from theatre and music to design and comedy.
For those who like quiet contemplation we offer an evening of
Mackintosh-inspired classical music, or a total immersion in gentle,
therapeutic sounds inside one of his buildings, or a guided walk to
some lesser-known Mackintosh locations.
For the more energetic there are artistic workshops and fun-filled
performances. Even food lovers will have the chance to explore
Mackintosh’s Italian sketches and diaries – together with appropriate
regional dishes.
But for all of us it promises a chance to learn something new about
Mackintosh and about our own relationship with the city.
Whether you are an aficionado or a Mackintosh newcomer, this
creative, exciting festival will offer you an experience to remember.
We hope you enjoy it.

Chair, Mackintosh Heritage Group
The Mackintosh
Celebrity Visit
Mischief La-bas
Accompanied by a small
‘pack’ of period paparazzi,
the celebrity couple of Charles
Rennie Mackintosh and
Margaret Macdonald are
re-visiting Glasgow to check
up on their heritage. They are
particularly keen to inspect
the Mackintosh buildings, to
admire how they are being
managed. They are also very
amused and delighted by all
the memorabilia, and their
continued celebrity status.

The exhibition will feature a number of paintings
and constructions by Tom Gardner, a former student
of Glasgow School of Art. His years as a student,
together with 40 years of teaching Saturday morning
children’s classes at the School created Tom’s rapport
with Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Many of his works
reflect Mackintosh’s buildings and his love of colour
and style. Tom found that while techniques could
be taught, imagination could not. Imagination
reveals, invents and is inherent in us all. Tom’s
works reflect this, with his paintings showing
fabulous shapes and contours. Tom has exhibited
with many groups in Glasgow and London, as well
as a solo show in the Kelly Gallery in Glasgow and
contributed to ‘Art Goes Boom with the Guns’ in
the Glasgow School of Art. Tom’s works are held in
many private collections.
