How to Promote a Gig - Masonic Theater - 4.25 - 3:15 PM
Former Red House Records publicist Ellen Stanley offers a step-by-step
guide for getting the word out about your show and building your fan
base.
Copyrights and Publishing - Winona Arts Center - 4.25 - 12:45 PM
Kevin Bowe has written songs on 3 platinum albums, working with
people from Paul Westerberg to Etta James and Joe Cocker. His songs
have been used on “The Sopranos” and several major motion pictures.
He can explain every which way the money goes, from publishing deals
to performance royalties and film/tv sync fees.
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Making it as a Musician
in the 21st Century - Masonic Theater - 4.25 - 12:45 PM
Minneapolis-based Music Lab instructors Julie and Andrew Thoreen
(Har-di-Har) will lead a panel including Peter Miller (We Are The
Willows) and J.E. Sunde in discussing the challenges and opportunities
that go along with pursuing a career in music given the current
economic and creative climate.
Recording - Winona Arts Center - 4.25 - 11:30 AM
Kevin Bowe owns his own studio in Minneapolis and is a program chair
at the Institute of Production and Recording. He’s worked with Paul
Westerberg and The Replacements, Communist Daughter, and Alison
Scott. He has also worked on hundreds of tracks for film and TV. Hear

Ali & The Scoundrels
Thurs. 4/23 – 10:30pm The Eagles Club (18+)
R&B, Soul, Dance Rock – Saint Paul, MN
Strong female vocals, sweet harmonies, & screaming horns merge
classic R&B with modern sensibilities in this 9-piece indie soul act
consisting entirely of Saint Mary’s University grads making their
third straight MWMF appearance.
American Scarecrows
Sat. 4/25 - 7:30pm Ed’s (no name) Bar (21+)
Roots Rock, Folk-Rock, Americana - Minneapolis, MN
Earnest trio featuring members of more metallic and Warped
Tour-friendly acts Dropping Daylight and Somerset. Polished,
radio-friendly jangle-rock, country-rock and rowdy Gaslight
Anthem-style garage-rock.
Bad Bad Hats
Sat. 4/25 – 10:00pm Wesley UMC (All Ages)
Indie-Folk, Alternative Pop – Minneapolis, MN
Upbeat and clever songwriting featuring handclaps, kazoo solos,
and terrifically warm & whimsical vocals. City Pages writes,
“Kerry Alexander has voice like cotton candy: light and airy,
imperfectly shaped, and filled with sweet pockets of sugar.”
Gabe Barnett & The Big House Rounders
Sat. 4/25 – 6:00pm Ed’s (no name) Bar (21+)
Folk, Americana, Roots – Minneapolis, MN
A lively, down-home folk singer with a theatrical stage presence
and a rascally entourage of washboard, trumpet, banjo, mandolin,
harmonica, & string bass players. Witty lyrics abound, and when
this act gets going, they whip bluegrass-y blues jams to a froth.
batteryboy
Sat. 4/25 – 9:00pm Winona Arts Center (All Ages)
Chamber-pop, Orchestral, Indie-Folk – Minneapolis, MN
Heady and pretty string arrangements set a feel-good, floating
aura that is comfortably grounded by heart-over-head vocals
graced in sweet harmonies & anchored with kempt percussion.
Lofty & sincere lyrical lines slide over the sweetly-sad string slips
that will keep them in your inner ear for the next year and more.
20
Beet Root Stew
Sat. 4/25 – 9:00pm The Eagles Club (18+)
Alternative Bluegrass, Roots – Winona, MN
6-piece jam grass act, and perennial Winona institution, that
will be serving up danceable originals & traditionals for a lively
celebration at their sixth consecutive performance at MWMF.
Between Two Bluffs
Sat. 4/25 – 6:00pm VFW (21+)
Folk, Bluegrass – Winona, MN
Old time revival trio that formed last fall and is making their
debut appearance at MWMF. Musicians Tanner Brethorst,
Mike Bird, & RaeNelle Ostberg come from different musical
backgrounds, but together they play anything from old fiddle
tunes to traditional numbers with their own twist.
Black-Eyed Snakes
Thurs. 4/23 – Midnight Ed’s (no name) Bar (21+)
Blues, Rock, – Duluth, MN
“Look to a place where LOW, The Fall, and Willie Dixon all have
something to say to one another. Then dance, fool.” That’s how
Spin Magazine’s Andrew Beaujon referred to them. A genrebending, beat-thwacking, voice-distorting electric blues band
fronted by LOW’s Alan Sparhawk.
Black Market Brass
Fri. 4/24 – Midnight Broken World Records (back room) (21+)
Funk, Afrobeat, Brass Band – Minneapolis, MN
Drums & horns of all kinds crowd the stage at this 10-piece’s
shows. Funk guitar scratches, horn line blasts, trumpet riffs fill
the air with a sound smuggled in from somewhere much warmer
than here. The congas & bass settle into a groove and let the horn
players take turns at making the crowd roar in amazement. Bring
your dancing shoes!
Black River Revue
Fri. 4/24 – 10:30pm The Eagles Club (18+)
Alternative Bluegrass, Folk – Duluth, MN / Superior, WI
Fun loving 6-piece founded in 2010 that plays a foot-stompin’
mixture of folk, rock and string-band music.
21
22
Kelly Blau
Fri. 4/24 – Noon The Boathouse (back patio) (All Ages)
Jazz – Winona, MN
Lead guitar player for local Americana band Jaybone Bell &
Restless Light whose solo sessions tend toward his trained jazz
guitar roots, inspired by John Scofield, Wes Montgomery, & Julian
Lage.
Bones, Jugs, N Harmony
Sat. 4/25 – 1:00pm Wesley UMC (All Ages)
Sat. 4/25 – 4:30pm Winona Arts Center (All Ages)
Jug Band, Calypso, Ragtime – Urbana, IL / Champaign, IL
Xylophones, kazoos, resonator guitars, clarinets, and, of course,
bones & jugs — this quartet uses an outrageous array of
instruments to create a 21st century throwback to 1920’s ragtime
with a new-agey jug band twist. They’ve even been known to
pay homage to their namesake with the 90s-rap-style dance hit,
Wiggle Ya Bones. Jug Band Hokum, a film featuring the band will
be previewed before their performance at the Arts Center.
Botzy
Sat. 4/25 – 7:15pm Broken World Records (back room) (21+)
Alternative Hip-Hop – Minneapolis, MN
Hyphy beats and a devil-may-care delivery dominate this
reformed ska-rapper’s songs. A hard working member of the
Polkadot Mayhem collective, Botzy is a constant collaborator
whose banging party tracks feature tongue-in-cheek rhymes that
are intermixed with jazzy tunes & earnest lyrics about old love &
self destruction.
Kevin Bowe & The Okemah Prophets
Fri. 4/24 – 9:00pm Ed’s (no name) Bar (21+)
Roots-Rock, Americana, Garage-Rock – Minneapolis, MN
Seasoned rock veteran Kevin Bowe trades barbs with a who’s who
of Twin Cities (and beyond) music legends. From Etta James to
Paul Westerberg, he has sung and recorded with or for an eclectic
bunch. His crack 3-piece band likes to play them loud and as No
Depression claims, ride “a sturdy cross between Tom Petty and
Band Of Horses.”
23
Brass Messengers
Sat. 4/25 – 8:00pm Historic Masonic Temple (All Ages)
Brass, Funk, Klezmer - Minneapolis, MN
Always brassy & never brash, they’ve been performing footstomping, dance-your-heart-out music for years. Imagine a
jazzed-up version of a parade band, playing everything from
hard-swinging tunes reminiscent of a New Orleans street group to
the orchestral woodwind whirls of a klezmer ensemble. Just when
you think you’ve settled in, you may even hear a tuba break out
into the opening riff of Black Sabbath’s War Pigs.
Breakaway
Sat. 4/25 – 9:30pm Broken World Records (front room) (21+)
Electronic, Witch House, Neo-Folk – Minneapolis, MN
Experimental solo electronic project that blends dark wave and
synthpop over agressive beats to create a digital landscape rife
with detail and sonic stimulation that expertly showcases Winona
native Joe Kujawa’s infectious intensity, impressive falsetto and
operatic delivery.
Chastity Brown
Thurs. 4/23 – 9:30pm Historic Masonic Temple (All Ages)
Neo-Soul, Blues, Roots - Minneapolis, MN
Rooted in gospel & soul, country & blues, Chastity is a 2013 alum
of MWMF. This multi-instrumentalist — guitar, piano, banjo,
saxophone — with four albums under her belt (& a fifth due out
this spring) has also made a name for herself in Europe, where she
toured again earlier this year.
Pieta Brown
Thurs. 4/23 – 8:00pm Historic Masonic Temple (All Ages)
Folk-Blues, Roots - Iowa City, IA
Red House Records artist and daughter of Grammy-nominated
folk/bluesman Greg Brown, Pieta’s languid, ethereal vocal
delivery has weathered numerous comparisons to such singers
as the Cowboy Junkies’ Margo Timmins. Her latest release,
“Paradise Outlaw”, was recorded at Justin Vernon’s April Base
studio in Wisconsin.
24
The Cavewives
Fri. 4/24 – 11:00pm VFW (21+)
Psych-Rock, Blues Rock, Alternative Rock - Milwaukee, WI
With rousing wails & soulful theatrics, frontman Michael Marten’s
versatile vocals, along with some impressive jangly guitar work,
lead the way in this polished four-piece’s audacious fusion
of blues rock, 60s psychedelia, and 80s glam. The result is an
idiosyncratic form of alternative rock.
Circle of Heat
Sat. 4/25 – Midnight VFW (21+)
Jazz-Rock Fusion, Funk, Jam Band - Minneapolis, MN
Technically skilled quartet that creates a fusion of prog rock beat
and jazz-style rock improvisation with a blues backbone and clean
vocal harmonies.
Click Track
Sat. 4/25 – 4:00pm Broken World Records (front room) (21+)
Indie-Rock – La Crosse, WI & Winona, MN
Catchy, exuberant, and hard-rocking power pop trio with
elements of Britpop and electronic dance that’s sure to animate
any crowd.
Communist Daughter
Fri. 4/24 – 9:00pm Historic Masonic Temple (All Ages)
Indie-Folk, Indie-Rock – Saint Paul, MN
Brilliantly honest and autobiographical storytelling provided
by the troubled past of frontman Johnny Solomon that is carried
along by smart arrangements & tactful musicianship and
articulated through smooth male/female vocals which tell the
sad-but-sometimes-hopeful stories of lost love & closed doors.
Corpse Reviver
Thurs. 4/23 – 11:00pm Broken World Records (front room) (21+)
Roots, Folk, Acoustic, Old-Time – Minneapolis, MN
Accomplished duo of lively folk musicians that pay tribute
to songs from Harry Smith’s storied and influential 1952
compilation, The Anthology of American Folk Music.
25
The Counterfactuals
Sat. 4/25 – 9:00pm Acoustic Cafe (All Ages)
Alt-Pop, Indie-Rock, Americana – Northfield, MN
For an act named after the psychological condition of ruminating
on the perennial What If?, this 4-piece is cohesive, clear, &
catchy -- remarkable, as it is primarily composed of philosophy
professors. Their songs buzz with indie-rock energy, are saturated
with a heavy dose of Americana, & are peppered with layered
lyrics that may suggest the presence of some of the alternative
realities we’ll never live.
Christopher the Conquered
Fri. 4/24 – 7:30pm Winona Arts Center (All Ages)
Folk, Jazz, Pop - Des Moines, Iowa
A cross fertilization of Randy Newman, Jonathon Richman,
and Jeff Buckley, Maximum Ames Records founder Chris Ford
approaches the singer-songwriter mode with directness, humor,
and satire. Expect a rock and roll attitude, informed by the
American Songbook Tradition and resulting in soulful pop songs.
Eddie Danger
Fri. 4/24 – 9:00pm Winona Arts Center (All Ages)
Sat. 4/25 – 4:00pm Ed’s (no name) Bar (patio) (21+)
Cosmic Country-folk – Madison, WI
An award-winning singer/songwriter, playwright, multiinstrumentalist, wedding officiant, story teller, & festival
organizer. Eddie Live-loop-samples 4-part vocal harmonies plus
the guitar, didgeridoo, piano, pump organ, flutes, sax, various
percussion, and ukulele. He also will lead the workshop/
networking session for North Light Songwriters’ Showcase.
Eddie Danger & Doctor Bob
Sat. 4/25 – 2:15pm Wesley UMC (All Ages)
Puppetry – Madison, WI & Winona, MN
Seafaring Songs & Puppets transport the audience to the decks
of ancient ships in a series of sea songs and shanties with live
marionette puppetry.
26
The Dang Ol’ Tri’ ole
Sat. 4/25 – 7:30 PM VFW (21+)
Folk, Old-Time, Bluegrass, Jazz – St. Paul, MN
A multi-genre acoustic group, writing enticing original music and
re-adapting classic rock and country pieces. With diverse musical
influences, the Tri’ole plays a bit of everything. 4-part vocal
harmonies and humored banter keep the audience drawn to the
stage.
Dirt Road Ramblers
Fri. 4/24 – 4:30pm Ed’s (no name) Bar (21+)
Country, Roots, Americana – Minneapolis, MN
Country-roots pioneers with roots in the soil of America and
a wayfaring spirit recognizable in the narrative pilgrimages
– from the Blue Ridge Mountains to Nashville, Tennessee to
roads unnamed and unknown. The band showcases songs with
traditional, classic sounds, influenced by the likes of hard work,
whiskey, and women.
DJ Abilities
Sat. 4/25 – Midnight Broken World Records (back room) (21+)
Alternative Hip-Hop, Electronic Dance Music – Saint Paul, MN
Born Gregory “Maxx” Keltgen, DJ Abilities is an underground hip
hop producer and DJ affiliated with Rhymesayers Entertainment.
Well-known in the Midwest for being one of the best battle DJs
in the local scene, this scratch master has twice taken the crown
at the DMC Regional Championships. Look for some insatiable
grooves on the turn tables to meltdown the end of the fest.
Gabriel Douglas
Fri. 4/24 – 6:00pm Ed’s (no name) Bar (21+)
Singer-Songwriter, Acoustic, Blues, Americana – Minneapolis, MN
4onthefloor frontman has a soulful, gritty voice that anchors
every song. Strong and deep, it soars over the acoustic singersongwriter’s strummings and melts listener’s hearts. His earnest
lyrics share tales of regret, desire, and brokeness with fierce
energy.

more into his 60s and 70s influences, 2014’s Shapes That Kiss The
Lips offer a familiar sound and his lofty voice in sepia tone.
Teenage Moods
Sat. 4/25 – 8:45pm Broken World Records (back room) (21+)
Surf, Garage-Rock, Lo-Fi – Minneapolis, MN
Simple and slightly punky G-rated songs that are chock-full of
stories about cats and bunnies and flowers, and revel in power
chords and sugary pop hooks. Not too tough, not too twee--they
hit that jangly sweet spot in the middle.
The Traveling Suitcase
Thurs. 4/23 – 10:30pm Ed’s (no name) Bar (21+)
Fri. 4/24 – 9:00pm Winona Arts Center (All Ages) Nicole Rae
solo - Songwriter’s Showcase
Hard Rock, Blues Rock, Garage Rock – Oshkosh, WI
Unconventional & tightly-knit rock trio with an eclectic sound that
can’t be pigeonholed. Their musical amalgamation slams listeners
into a world of medicinal bass lines, teeth whitening guitar solos,
& ecstatic songs that awaken our inner child. Singer & drummer
Nicole Rae turns heads belting out gritty & bluesy vocal lines
while banging her head between lyrics, with hair whipping in the
air. All told, this energetic act is simply mesmerizing.
Turkey Creek
Sat. 4/25 – 4:30pm Acoustic Cafe (All Ages)
Roots, Old-Time, Folk – Winona, MN
Members of the Beef Slough Boys and Zephyr Valley String Band
in a new string trio that features music with deep roots, plenty of
heart and several members of the mandolin family.
52
Twins
Sat. 4/25 – 10:15pm Broken World Records (back room) (21+)
Garage Rock, Power Pop, Post-Punk – Waterloo, IA
Irreverent band of misfit pop-rockers guided by the ghosts of
Lennon & McCartney, Chilton & Bell and the Davies Brothers that
create sublimely polished nuggets of pop, washed in old-school
harmonies & falsettos, packed in back beat, and propelled by
galloping guitars & sparkling arpeggios.
The Ultrasounds
Fri. 4/24 – 9:45pm VFW (21+)
Alternative, Post-Punk, Dream-Pop – Winona, MN
Making their fourth consecutive MWMF appearance, this group
of three small chicks & one awkwardly lanky local dude are
determined purveyors of sludgy, garage dream-pop – highlighted
by raw & noisy guitar-driven sounds contrasted by singer Megan
Hanson’s melodic & bittersweet pixie-goth vocal delivery.
The Union Suits
Sat. 4/25 – 10:30pm VFW (21+)
Americana, Alt-Country, Outlaw Country – Minneapolis, MN
The broken & brooding sort of original Midwestern country that
finds its home on the bar stereo. Having been bred in Wisconsin
and finding a home in the Twin Cities, the band’s 2014 full-length,
Forward, is a handsome, wounded heart for your ears.
Elsa Va
Sat. 4/25 – 11:45am Blooming Grounds (All Ages)
Singer-Songwriter, Dream Pop – Sioux City, IA
Groomed on the musical theatre stages of Winona, this singersongwriter accompanies her unique vocal style with piano, guitar,
accordion, and kick drum.

Valaska
Fri. 4/24 – 9:00pm Acoustic Cafe (All Ages)
Acoustic, Singer-Songwriter, Indie-Folk – Chicago, IL
True and solid indie-folk songs with the melancholic trimmings.
Dave Valdez has captured intelligently written songs with a layer
of comforting dust in his 2013 release, Natural Habitat. This is
music that is lyrical & melodic, but easily memorable amongst
over-saturated airwaves.
We Are The Willows
Fri. 4/24 – 7:30pm Historic Masonic Temple (All Ages)
Indie-Rock, Chamber-Pop – Minneapolis, MN
Returning to a MWMF stage for the fourth time with their new
2014 album Picture [Portrait], based off of over 350 letters written
to front-man Peter Miller’s grandmother from his grandfather
during his tour in the South Pacific during WWII. This orchestral
sextet spells indie-rock at its most beautiful and honest state.
Whale House
Sat. 4/25 – 6:15 PM Wesley UMC (All Ages)
Indie Rock, Rock – Eau Claire, WI
Influenced by classic rock and 90’s alternative grunge, this three
piece carves a unique blend of styles that combines the sonic
exploration of psychedelic rock with the raw energy of punk.
The Weathered Heads
Sat. 4/25 – 6:30pm Historic Masonic Temple (All Ages)
Pop Rock, Jam Band – Winona, MN
Charismatic 6-piece inspired by Dave Matthews & John Mayer
with emotional vocals, jazz influenced improvisation, and vibrant
pop melodies led by eponymous frontman Craig Weatherhead.
Their first proper full-length studio album, The Sinner, was
released with much fanfare this past February.
Austin Weatherhead
Fri. 4/24 – 6:00pm Wesley UMC (All Ages)
Pop, Acoustic – Winona, MN
Confident and proficient 14 year old guitarist and pianist that
performs both covers and originals.

The Wide Awakes
Fri. 4/24 – 9:00 PM The Eagles Club (18+)
Bluegrass, Folk, Roots - Winona, MN
5-piece good-time string band that will make you want to dance
and sing along to their up-beat brand of bluegrass.
Toki Wright + Big Cats
Fri. 4/24 – 11:00pm Wesley UMC (All Ages)
Hip-Hop, Experimental Electronic, Soul - Minneapolis, MN
Emcee, organizer, and educator Toki Wright blends soulful
yet futuristic music with intelligent writing. Pangaea, his
collaborative album with producer Big Cats, was released in 2014
to critical acclaim. Their polished live sets feature a progressive
strain of hip-hop that owes as much to Flying Lotus’s free-form
textures as it does to Yeezus-style aggro-rap.
Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers
Fri. 4/24 – 6:00pm The Eagles Club (18+)
Roots, Country, Vaudeville, Folk – Viroqua, WI
Charming & adorable duo performing both original and
traditional old-time fiddle tunes with tight harmonies, while
bringing a light musical touch and a great sense of humor. Their
newest album was recorded by veteran Minneapolis engineer
Tom Herbers on analog one-inch tape in a 125-year-old chapel.
