2007: A Superlative Year
with the Dynamics of New Products, Major Projects,
Good Customer Service and Key Partnerships
Continuing to Drive Success
Welcome to this latest edition of our KEC Newsletter. It has been an exciting few months since
our last edition - a period of further considerable growth in which we have launched some impressive
new products and built really positive new partnerships in our industry.
Take the Trend Building Management Controls brand,
for example: we were delighted to play host to ‘An
Evening with Trend’ back in November - further details
can be found on Page 12 in this edition.
We were also thrilled to see
so many industry friends and
key contacts at our grand
KEC Ramadan Ghabka
event back in October - our
way of just saying ‘thank you’
for all the industry support
and encouragement that we
received throughout the year.
KEC’s Chairman &
Managing Partner - Abdul
Rahman AlGhunaim - was
also honoured to be invited to
deliver a keynote speech at
the recent IEI Kuwait Chapter
- Engineers Day gathering
on the topical subject of
‘Convergence of Technologies
for Rapid Development’ - an
excellent event - again see Page
°
One example is our recent major ‘GENT’ 360
Shopping Mall win. Another is the exciting new ‘Arraya
II’ high-rise complex in the heart of Kuwait city where
our winning ‘MK’ wiring device and Ackermann Cable
Management solutions proved
their worth. Not to forget the new
Kuwait Maidan Clinic, which
features MK as do a whole host
of other significant projects several
of which also feature Systems
Solutions installations courtesy of
the Brand-Rex structured cabling
brand and more recently the
introduction of Honeywell access
control and security products.
Cooper, CEAG and JSB in the
field of ‘central battery’ life safety
systems also help us to continue
winning an increasing market
acceptance here in Kuwait and
the Gulf.
In summary, 2007 has been
another remarkable year for

significant. Some of the leading European brands, notably
Martini, Kreon, Artemide & Intralux (Australia) within
our Lighting portfolio are helping us to drive the business
forwards.
In this wide-ranging edition, we feature, for example,
several recent KEC project successes where the right
product solution is there to further inspire us all.
Noteworthy sales and market share gains have been
achieved in 2007 on the MK front, courtesy of a number
of supply chain initiatives, which in turn enabled more and
more of the MK wiring accessory and cable management
product offerings to be made available, literally, ‘off-theshelf’.

Award Winning KEC
KEC’s award-winning MK Wiring Device & Cable Management Team - headed up by none other
than KEC’s Rajan Peter - was privileged recently to receive a token of appreciation from MK UK to
commemorate more than 25 years of successful partnership.
The venue was Thailand’s Phuket Island, where the top
performing regional channel partners gathered to participate
in this year’s MK’s 2007
Regional Channel Partner
Conference and Business
Planning Meeting and KEC’s
Rajan Peter was there to
put across our KEC views
from the Kuwait marketplace.
He was, of course, really
proud to receive the award
presented on behalf of MK
by International Business
Director - Christian Strüver
and Regional General
Manager - Dilip Sinha pictured right.
“We are always thrilled
to receive awards and recognition of this nature,” commented
Rajan Peter “reflecting the long-standing and hugely successful
partnership with our colleagues from MK Electric UK and indeed
the encouraging continuing support that we have received over
the years from so many of Kuwait’s specifiers, contractors,
distributors and clients alike,” he added.
Page 2
Leading the regional electrical wiring accessory industry for
well over 25 years, the MK product offering continues to provide
so many positive benefits and
features over its nearest rivals,
including total peace of mind
when it comes to quality and
reliability, that these factors when
combined render the ‘MK’ brand
value a very persuasive force. It
is not hard to understand why MK
maintains the leading position in
the Kuwait market.

Key Note Speech
‘Convergence of Technologies for Rapid Development’
KEC’s Chairman and Managing Partner
Abdul Rahman Alghunaim
Delivers a KeyNote Address to the IEI Kuwait Chapter
In an address recently to the Kuwait IEC, KEC’s Chairman & Managing Partner - Abdul Rahman Alghunaim LFIEEE,
FIET - shared his thoughts and aspirations concerning the topical subject of ‘convergence’.
A
s a qualified engineer, a former Minister of State and former
Under Secretary of the Kuwait Ministry of Communications
- combined with an esteemed background in engineering and
business, Abdul Rahman AlGhumain - KEC’s long-standing
Chairman and Managing Partner - was honoured to deliver the
key note address at the recent annual gathering of the Kuwait
IEC.
‘Convergence’ - one of the key global issues and ‘opportunities’
in the world of telecommunications today - he views in a way which
is very much prevalent in the world of the low-voltage electrical
industry…. and the following is an excerpt of his remarks:
‘Today we see all round development in various technological
sectors. Advance in Communication Technology with data
processing and imaging technology has driven most of the
planet into a state of ubiquitous, cost-effective, real time
multi-model connectivity from anywhere to anywhere. Mobile
communication, for example, has grown to such a stage that
there is no place on the earth where you cannot reach.
This development and convergence of technologies have
helped in improvement of healthcare, defence, e-governance,
human-machine interface and education,etc.
Nano-technology has shown its presence and is being
recognized as a foundation for advances in Bio and Info
technologies. It has helped in shrinking chip electronics,
reduction in power disruption, creation of value of wealth
besides creating cures and treatments resulting in extending
life expectancy and elimination of sufferings of mankind.
The Defence Industry has received a big boost with the
development of robotics, communication tools, biological,
chemical and nano-weapons. These technologies have
helped in space research and warfare, bionic scanning of
people entering airports and other sensitive areas resulting in
tightening of security and surveillance.
The world of tomorrow, it is hoped, will utilise this tremendous
potential emerging from the merger of these technological
advancements for the welfare of the whole society and enhance
longevity and quality of life.
This convergence of technologies will, however, cause strains
on law makers, politicians and social activists, and that is
an area where institutions like IEI, IEEE, etc. can cooperate
and work towards utilising these changes for the benefit of
mankind.’

Presentation to Abdul Rahman Alghunaim by
Eng. Ahmed Al Mershad.
Through his role within KEC, the speaker has seen the practical
demonstration of technology delivering integrated control,
management and function in building projects in and around
Kuwait and especially where, as in Trend and Gent systems, the
interlinking of controls and monitoring across the technologies is
being pushed to new limits across entire building complexes.
A high level of focus in the low voltage electrical industry is
being channelled these days towards the concept and reality of
integrated ‘intelligent buildings’ of the future in order to deliver
the increased customer features, benefits, energy-savings and
inter-operability opportunities sought by all.
The prestigious gathering was highly receptive to his thoughts
and experiences.

The world of tomorrow,
it is hoped, will utilise this
tremendous potential
emerging from the merger
of these technological
advancements for the
welfare of the whole society

esigned for end-users keen to assess outdoor wiring device power status at-a-glance, two
new sockets in MK Electric’s Masterseal range now feature translucent lids for easy viewing
of on/off neon indicators or switch positions without the need to open the ingress-protected (IP)
enclosures.
The award-winning Masterseal range from MK Electric, the UK’s leading manufacturer
of wiring devices and accessories, has been specifically developed for use in
environments where wiring devices and accessories would be at risk from penetration
by dust or splashing water.
For safety, there is the IEC 3mm minimum gap across the switch break and the MK
pioneering three-pin operated ‘child resistant shutter system’, designed to inhibit access
to the electricity supply unless all 3 pins of a standard British 13A plug are in position.
Scientifically sealed to IP56 and tested by MK well in excess of British Standards,
Masterseal sockets are claimed to be unique in that they can seal around virtually any
standard 13A plug, allowing safe connection for any appliance. The two new additions
to the Masterseal range are translucent-lidded two-gang switched sockets in a choice
of either white or grey.

Ackermann - part of the Obo-Bettermann organisation based in Germany, and
in association with KEC, will supply an extensive underfloor cable management
solution.
Construction is already underway of the
new impressive ‘Arraya II’ 56 floor office
tower in the heart of Kuwait City - a further
development by Salhia Real Estate - with the
main works currently being undertaken by the
principal contractor Kharafi National. Located
a stone’s throw away from the existing Salhia
and Arraya shopping malls, the Tower, is
soon to be fitted out with a KEC-supplied
Ackermann Cable Management solution.
Comprising more than 10,000 meters of
trunking and the not insignificant count of
some 3,500 individual floor outlet boxes, the
Cable Management
solution will give
extensive flexible
power needs ‘just
where its required’
suitably befitting
such a major building
project.
“Working alongside local specifying
consultants Pan Arab Consulting Engineers,
the US$ 400,000 Cable Management
project win represents another excellent
achievement for the combined KEC and
Ackermann teams,” noted KEC’s Rajan
Peter. “The floor box solution will feature
boxes that are specifically designed to
be used in marble floor applications,” he
added, “virtually unique to Ackermann:
but nevertheless a vital part of the overall
electrical design befitting such a project and
which certainly has a considerable element
of ‘in-built, future-proofing’,” he added.
The products are being manufactured in
Ackermann’s state-of-the-art manufacturing
facilities in Gummersbach, Germany
and have already started arriving on site
here in Kuwait in order to be available for
installation by the Kharafi National team
during the first quarter of 2008.

Focus Meets Provides Further Insight into the UK’s
Market-Leading Brand of Building Management Controls
Trend Controls, the UK’s BMS market leader and now part of the global Honeywell Corporation, recently staged the first
part in a series of Customer Focus Meets - ‘An Evening With Trend’ - here in Kuwait aimed at creating further awareness
of the latest features & real customer benefits of the Trend Building Management Controls range of solutions.
Trend have been at the cuttingedge of BMS technology since their
inception more than 25 years ago,
developing a succession of exciting
standard-setting products, the latest
of which features an entirely ‘state-ofthe-art’ BMS controller platform - the
supremely flexible IQ3xcite - designed
to communicate via Ethernet, whose
low cost, speed and reliability have
made it by far the most popular BMS
data network now used in Europe’s
non-domestic buildings.

o Flexible Alarm
Handling:
Advanced alarm
strategies can easily be
implemented, notifying
whoever, wherever required
direct to a user’s mobile phone,
email system or indeed a Trend
supervisor...by means of standard
industry protocols such as Short
Message Service [SMS], Simple
Network Management Protocol
(SNMP) and Internet Protocol (IP].
With a strong regional team in place
under the leadership of Yazdi Daruwalla,
a seasoned BMS expert, supported by
Pamela David: Sales Manager and Peter
Fernando: Trend’s Regional Technical
Manager, the regional Trend Team based
in Dubai has undertaken numerous major
BMS projects.
Here in Kuwait, the KEC Solutions
team have also undertaken successful
Trend BMS projects, including the Marina
Waterfront development and several
Trend controls installations at the Kuwait
Oil Company, to name but a few and both
teams are set to further expand over the
coming months.
The ‘Evening with Trend’ event recently
held at the Radisson SAS ballroom was
attended by Richard Church, International
Sales Director, and Pete Roberts, Trend’s
Global Key Account Support Manager,
who hosted more than 100 key guests in
association with ourselves.
Pete Roberts, during his key note
presentation highlighted the following key
Trend customer benefits which include:
o Ease of Use:
o Reduced installation time on both new
and retrofit projects:
Using open systems network architecture
and flexible hardware minimises systems
complexity and site disturbance, whilst the
automatic IP addressing capability provides
the plug-and-play network configuration, thus
reducing costs.
o Reduced on-site Commissioning
Time:
Advanced tools that automate many
tasks, while self-learning supervisors
minimise data input, reducing commissioning
time and the potential for human error.
The voice of the customer is
really important at Trend, resulting
in products that are easy to use and
that also ensure that you get the most
from your BMS. Using your Trend
BMS correctly will potentially deliver
substantial savings on utility costs,
whilst providing total comfort to your
building occupants.
o Protecting Your Investment:
Trend philosophy of continuous
improvement is maintained through a
progressive platform of development,
thus ensuring that the investments

of today remain investments for the future.
Trend’s commitment is demonstrated by the
Trend network version of the IQ3xcite, which
delivers the latest technology to existing
systems.
The KEC Systems Solutions Team, under
the leadership of Pugazhendi Sundararajan,
these days boasts a dedicated BMS customer
facing sales engineer specialist, combined with
vital strength of installation, commissioning and
maintenance support under the leadership of
KEC’s Ralph Vieira and a rapidly expanding
team of fully trained and fully versed field
engineers.
Whatever your requirements in BMS, it could
now pay to be thinking in terms of switching
to Trend for your next BMS installation in
partnership with KEC.
KEC now boasts local Trend stocks ‘off the
shelf’ and at prices which are undoubtedly
industry competitive.

Sales of Brand-Rex
Structured Cabling
Soar
Brand-Rex, one of the leading European manufacturer’s
of Structured Cabling in the datacom business, is rapidly
becoming ‘brand of choice’ here in Kuwait, notes KEC’s
Puga Sundararajan, sales having risen strongly in recent
months.
Demand for Brand-Rex copper and fibre-based products has
increased significantly recently. In the major project sector,
companies such as Kuwait Oil Company continue to invest
in and upgrade data infrastructure networks. But, there has
also been a significant pick-up in demand in the trade sector
of the Kuwait marketplace - where Brand-Rex is increasingly
becoming the ‘brand of choice.’
“It’s always been our aim to build KEC as everyone’s first
point of call for all their Brand-Rex structured cabling
needs” added KEC’s Pugazhendi Sundararajan and it’s been
extremely encouraging to note the positive progress that we
have managed to achieve in recent times.
Much of the real success to date is attributable to the ‘quality
& reliability’ of the Brand-Rex copper and fibre-optic product
offering, along with an extensive range of complementary data
accessories.
But, it has to be said, that the continued investment that we
have made in our supply chain aimed at making the BrandRex product available ‘off the shelf ’ either via KEC in the
case of medium to major projects or via an increasingly active
network of stockists so that it is there just when its wanted
has really paid dividends.
Brand-Rex, headquartered in Glenrothes in Scotland’s
‘silicon valley’ has received extensive manufacturing focused
investment of more than £6 million in recent times, courtesy
of its owners – US-based private equity firm, The Gores
Group. The strategic thrusts within Brand-Rex to deliver its
significant growth aspirations comprise:

KEC Teams & Sponsorship
“All Systems Go” for the KEC
Installation, Commissioning
& Maintenance Team
H
aving increased considerably in numbers, capability
and breadth of systems coverage in recent months - the
KEC Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance Team
under the leadership of KEC’s Ralph Vieira has never been
more in demand…
Considerable emphasis has been placed these past 2-3 years by
the KEC Management Team in building a professional, capable and
efficient KEC Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance team as
a means of ensuring the continued and future successful growth of
our KEC Systems Solutions brands.
From relatively humble beginnings 2-3 years ago when the embryonic
team was largely responsible for trouble-shooting and commissioning
some of Kuwait’s leading ‘GENT’ fire detection & alarm system
installations - the team has grown significantly in expertise numbers
and coverage to now include leading KEC brands such as: Brand-Rex
structure cabling; Quantran dimming controls; Cooper CEAG and JSB
emergency lighting solutions; GE UPS solutions and Trend - the UK’s
leading Building Management Control systems.
“Such prestigious and challenging Kuwait projects as the
new Messilah Beach Hotel, CitiBank - including extensive
‘GENT’ fire detection & alarm ‘networking’ projects for the
likes of KOC - have been undertaken by the KEC team
in recent times,” noted KEC’s Peter Woods - to which
he added, “more recently this includes the prestigious Al
Awadi Tower where we have been awarded the ‘GENT’
maintenance contract and there remains a huge commitment
and dedication on the part of the KEC Management to the
team’s continued future training & development. We want
to ensure that we have the capability to really support the
success of our rapidly building ‘intelligent building’ system
solutions business.”
Great Close to MK-KEC 2006-2007 Cricket Season
in Association with Gulf Consult
A
recent presentation event hosted
by one of Kuwait’s leading
architects, planners and consultants
- Gulf Consult - marked an exciting
end to the 2006-2007 MK-KEC cricket
sponsorship season and came hard on
the heels of the recent ICC Twenty-20
matches held here in Kuwait.
Aimed at new and emerging cricketers in Kuwait, this season’s matches
brought together, in the final phase, twenty participating teams divided into
five groups.
The prize giving event was attended by many of Kuwait’s senior cricket
administrators and dignitaries. Jeff De Lange MBE, Gulf Consult’s Deputy
Managing Director along with KEC’s Peter Woods, made the presentations.
Thanks were expressed for the contribution of KEC and MK Electric for their
further active participation and sponsorship and tribute was paid once again
to ‘the unique partnership’ in the Kuwait construction industry which aimed to
put something back into developing Kuwait’s young cricketing enthusiasts and
driving for overall improvement in cricketing standards.
The Five Winners from each group were:
Group A: Alghanim Industries team, captained by Suad Galsuker
Group B: Skylark team, captained by Edward Menezes,
Group C: Al Mulla team, captained by Imran Khan
Group D: Duraar team, captained by Alok Chugh
Group E: DHL team, captained by Nasir Chilwan
