MS Coll. 286 & 361 Brown (Russell) Papers Dates: 1972-1999. Extent: 69 boxes and oversize folder, 10.5 metres The 1991 accession (MS Coll. 286) is a collection of Russell Brown’s literary papers, and his editorial and correspondence files from his tenure as editor at Lakehead University Review (1972-75), Descant (1979-83), as joint editor of An Anthology of Canadian Literature in English (1982-83), and poetry editor at McClelland and Stewart (1983-88). The 1999 accession (MS Coll. 361) is a collection of literary papers that includes wordprocessed drafts by Brown and by other writers whose work he has edited, as well as correspondence – both personal and business, related to duties as professor of English at the University of Toronto and as a member of university committees, as well as correspondence related to his editing for An Anthology of Canadian Literature in English. Gift of Russell Brown, 1991 and 1999. 2 MS. BROWN (RUSSELL) PAPERS COLL. HfJ" 2.86 SCOPE & CONTENT Russell Brown's papers include his editorial and correspondence files from his tenure as editor of Lakehead University Review (1972-75); Descant (1978-83); joint editor, An Anthology of Canadian Literature in English (1982-83); and as poetry editor at McClelland and stewart (1983-88). He succeeded Dennis Lee in this position so that some authors' files may contain correspondence from the latter. Brown edited about thirty books of poetry, including works by Roo Borson, Lorna Crozier, Mary di Michele, Ralph Gustafson, Irving Layton, Douglas LePan, Susan Musgrave and Al Purdy. Some manuscripts are included with the correspondence. Manuscripts for which the authors sought Brown's editorial and critical suggestions may contain lengthy comments which, in many cases, resulted in the works being revised and later pUblished. 3 MS.
