Over the last couple of decades I have trialed more than a
sensible sampling of rubber legs. Some better than others, but
for the most part they were all pretty much the same and
mediocre at best. Nonetheless, I am happy to report I have
finally found legs worthy enough for Van Halen to sing about.
Aptly named, Hareline's Loco Legs are brilliantly colored and
insanely impressive. Fashioned out of silicone, they are
unexpectedly durable and unequivocally the finest legs I have
tied with to date. There is no shortage of colors to choose from
and if tying bonefish or permit flies are in your near future,
definitely pick up a couple of packs of the sand and bonefish
pink. Try them for yourself, but David Lee Roth and I both "Dig

Simms Photo Shoot Belize
Background
Saturday, November 10 we headed over to Miami and caught a
flight to Belize City. From there we transferred to Punta Gorda
Town via Tropic Air and arrived at 5 O'clock. We ate dinner at
the indescribable Belcamp Resort which was 5 star! If you
wanted to do the whole nine yards and bring your spouse, this is
the place. There was much more than just fishing available. The
food and facility were amazing, not to mention world class
snorkeling with the chef. It was very close to where we would be
staying which was the Garbutt's fishing lodge. We fished with
two of the three Garbutt brothers, Scully and Oliver, who not
only were amazing fishing guides but tons of fun to hang out
with.
After several days of epic flats fishing we hopped on Tropic Air
again and headed over to Dangriga. A half hour ride in a
conversion van and the film crew and I arrived in Permit
Heaven. We were lucky enough to be fishing with the permit
KING, Lincoln Westby out of Blue Horizon Lodge. It was a real
honor just to meet Lincoln, and an unforgettable pleasure to
listen to his stories. To learn more about one of the coolest
places on earth check out the movie Currents of Belize by Costa
Del Mar.
Next we headed to San Pedro. We stayed at a super cool place
called The Hotel del Rio. My room was a loft like Tiki Hut with a
full kitchen. It was very spacious and could have slept 4
comfortably. It was centrally located so it was just a 5-minute
walk down the beach to our guides dock, and walking distance
to all the night life on the beach. We fished with infamous Abbie
Marin... He was by far one of the "Fishiest" Guys I have ever
met.
Thursday morning we fished with Wil Flack, Simms Rep for
Central America and Owner of the Tres Pecados Fly Shop. Wil
is the GO-TO dude to book any trip that you want to do fly
fishing in Belize! He has been guiding down there for over 15
years and his knowledge of the fishery is unsurpassed. He has
fished with the vast majority, if not all of the outfitters and
guides, and knows who's the best and how to get in touch with
them. He arranged our entire trip, and is definitely THE FIRST
PHONE CALL to make when you're ready to book your next trip.

Go To Flies
Permit: Christmas Island (Pearl), Baurer Crabs (Tan & Olive) #
4's
Bonefish: Gotchas, Crazy Charlie's, and Bitters # 6's & 8's
Tarpon: Black Deaths & Cockroaches # 1-3/0's
Essential Equipment
Bring your favorite 8 or 9 weight for permit and bones, and a 10
weight if you are planning on chasing Tarpon. Don't forget a
hat, and pair of amber lens Costa del Mar sunglasses are a
must. You will definitely want your best camera with you as
well. Belize is known to have frequent scattered showers so
make sure you bring the right rain gear. I was very comfortable
in Simms Gore-Tex Paclite Jacket, and kept my gear and
electronics dry in Simms water proof Dry Creek Roll Top bag.
When it's not raining you want to make sure you are protected
from the sun as thoroughly as possible without over heating.
The Sun can be very intense on clear sky days, so make sure
you have full coverage from head to toe. Simms makes
Superlight Pants for Men and Women and their Solarflex Hoody
was exactly what I needed for long hours on the flats. I really
like the thumbholes in the sleeves that keeps the material down
and tops of your hands protected.
The Squimp
Although the creator and origin of this simple to tie fly are
unsure, there is no question about it's ability to a fish all over the
world. This variation utilizes Cactus Chenille for the body, but I
have also seen versions tied with tan Micro Chenille for smaller
flies with a slimmer profile. For those of you that prefer natural
materials over synthetic's, the craft fur can also be substituted
for you favorite fur.
Materials
Hook: Diachi 2546 or Similar Saltwater Hook
Thread: Laratun X Strong 95 Denier -Beige
Tail: Sand Extra Select Craft Fur Sand
Eyes: 5/32 Dumbbell - Black
Body: Hareline Medium Cactus Chenille - Bonefish Tan
Legs: Hareline Loco Legs - Sand
Wing: Sand Extra Select Craft Fur Sand
Misc.: Krystal Flash - Bonefish Tan
Adhesive: Clear Cure Goo Hydro
Step 1:
Start your thread at the point of the hook and attach the
dumbbell eyes with a series of figure eight wraps.
Step 2:
Directly behind the eyes tie in a match stick sized hank of Craft
Fur. Make 7-8 wraps down the bend of the hook.
Step 3:
On top of the craft fur tie in 2 strands of Krystal Flash and a pair
of Loco legs, one on each side of the hook.
Step 4:
On top of the previously materials, tie in a six inch piece of
Medium Cactus Chenille. Make sure you wrap back a few turns
past the other materials, this will insure you cover your wraps
when you palmer the Chenille. Advance your thread to the front
of the hook.
Step 5:
Palmer the Cactus Chenille forward, making sure to cover the
eyes with a figure eight wrap. Slightly before the eye of the
hook tie off the Chenille, you want to leave yourself enough
room for the Craft Fur Wing. Cut away any access Chenille
Step 6:
Tie in a bunch of Craft fur slightly longer and more dense than
the first. On top of the Craft Fur tie in 2 strands of Krystal Flash.
On each side of the thread ball attach a 2-inch loco leg at its
center. Whip finish and cut away the thread. Cover the threads
with a thin coat of Clear Cur Goo Hydro to complete.
Until next time, keep your wraps tight &
your feathers straight!
