Throw in a quirky bag or accessory and you’re good to go! selectcitywalk.com July-August 2015 19 /style file Men’s fashion Casual cues Is casual wear your PJs and a faded tee or is it a little more than that? Casual clothing takes on several meanings when it comes to menswear. Read on to know more about how to upgrade your downtime dressing E ven if your attitude is uber relaxed; don’t let your style quotient slide down. There are certain things to keep in mind when decoding the casual look. Scroll down to see what are the pieces that are key to building your casual wardrobe. Let’s talk colour Please remember, gentlemen colour is your pal. It’s not something to run away from or belch at. So do not fear it. Introduce subtle hints of colour through trims, collars, trouser turn-ups, accessories, shirt lining etc. Or if you’re up to it and the season permits, a pair of chinos or a blazer in a bright seasonal hue or for those lesser brave, a pastel tone can do wonders for those looking to rock the casual chic look. Take your pick in the bright palette from oranges, blues and greens. Colour is a good thing is what you need to keep in mind here. Bottoms up Very important in the casual look is what you’re wearing on the bottom half. While denims are the obvious choice for most people; looks good, is hardy, doesn’t require too much thinking (we know how that goes for the men folk!) and goes with everything – but there is more to the bottom half than just a trusty pair of denims. Case in point, the chinos. Whether it’s a relaxed Friday post work gig or a Sunday afternoon sipping the good stuff on a rooftop 20 July-August 2015 selectcitywalk.com A striped polo tee looks good with shorts, denims or khakhis. Tommy Hilfiger Yes, sir. A half striped shirt is casual. Thomas Pink A funky knapsack to complement the casual attitude. Tommy Hilfiger Sport those aviators or a pair of cool sunshades when out. Tommy Hilfiger Four pocket pants look great with a t-shirt only. Don’t try this with a shirt, please. Tommy Hilfiger someplace, you could try a light-coloured, slim leg chino with colourful or printed turn-ups. This is another way to infuse colour into your wardrobe and again, you can pair this with just about anything on the top half. Shorts are another option but please remember – boxers are not shorts and you cannot step out in your boxers. Shorts in khakhi, navy blue, grey, black or any other solid tone can be worn with a tailored shirt, a collared tee or an alternative but smart option. Shorts in darker colours look great when worn with bright coloured top wear. Do not go too short with your shorts. And if denims are your thing, then there are ways to play around with it also. Try a different colour – yes, jeans do come in colours other than ‘denim blue’. The right fit, selectcitywalk.com July-August 2015 Nothing screams casual louder than a pair of shorts. Tommy Hilfiger 21 /style file Men’s fashion Put these on for a fashionable Sunday brunch. Tommy Hilfiger Tip your hat and wish the ladies top o’ the morning! Tommy Hilfiger Always have a round neck tee in your armoire, Tommy Hilfiger Prints or graphic tees stand out. Tommy Hilfiger Patched denims make for good conversation starters. Tommy Hilfiger Room for experimenting here is in the fabric and sleeve lengths. Short sleeves, rolled up sleeves, sleeve-jacket roll ups – take your pick. A short sleeve work well with tailored trousers and if you want to water down a work shirt into a casual look, roll up the sleeves. Slim cut blazers look great with easy-going chinos. Sports jackets or suede-sleeved bomber jackets tone down structured separates to make them a little more relaxed. Stick to lightweight linens and cottons and keep the silks for evening wear. Finishing up light and easy wear denims can be worn with anything to nail the casual look. Please notedenim shorts are for women. Stick to full length denims. Top gear There are options aplenty here. First off, are the tee and the shirt. Second, you can always have a casual jacket or blazer spruce up things for you. First the shirt, an easy open collar sky blue (cotton or linen) shirt or a chambray denim style is just the place to begin. Tee shirts are a great way to add a punch of colour to your attire. Polo tees or shirts are another way to add that slice of sharpness to any casual outfit. Stripes and checks on shirts and tees instantly up the game in the casual department. Checks or stripes in contrasting hues like red-blue or yellow -blue look great. 22 July-August 2015 selectcitywalk.com Image courtesy: Pantaloons No, we aren’t done talking here, mister. Just because you ticked off the chinos and the ideal summer jacket on your mental list, doesn’t mean it’s over. A little effort in dressing up or juicing up casual attire never did any harm. Bold pocket squares are so stylish when worn on blazers or even on a waistcoat. A cool pair of aviators, a sleek watch, swanky leather oversized bag, a nice pair of loafers, granddad sandals, trainers; the list is endless on how you can nail that casual look perfectly. These extras, so to speak, bring the whole look together. Are you noting the new rules of casual? Stock up on collared tees in every colour. Bare Denims (available at Pantaloons) WEAR IT WITH Beach shorts - need we say more?! Tommy Hilfiger Team these with a pair of cotton chinos or shorts. Tommy Hilfiger Frame that casual air around you. Tommy Hilfiger selectcitywalk.com July-August 2015 Belt out some casual tunes. Tommy Hilfiger Slip-ons for easy wear. But there’s no reason to pull your hair out. There are styles that work around the frizz to keep it at bay. Here’s how you can tame your tresses Y ou spend so much time on doing your hair and nothing seems to keep that frizz down. It’s unruly and moody. The heat doesn’t help and the humidity (strangely) intensifies it. The blow-dry, the ironing, the crimping and all other heat styling products don’t hold up against the humidity. Try these hairstyles to lock up and camouflage the frizz. Here’s to stunning summer hair. Messy half done chignon This hairstyle tames some of the frizz and let’s the rest just stay wild. For those of you who know and love the elegant French chignon, this is just as graceful a hairdo by itself. Tease your hair at the crown and gently smoothen the top so it looks like there is more volume. Pull all your hair into a low ponytail and secure with a clear band. Twist the ponytail into a low chignon at the nape of your neck and hold it all in place with pins. Gently pull some strands out below the chignon to give it a messier and a half done look. Pull the hair at the crown to loosen it up a bit. Hot cross buns A braided bun cuts through the entire frizz giving you a sleek look. Try styling your hair with a middle or centre parting in the front and pull all your hair back into a ponytail. Secure the ponytail with an elastic band and braid the entire length and secure again with a transparent elastic band. Twist the braid then into a bun and pin it with u-pins to keep it all in place. Use some hairspray to hold it and lend it staying power and voila! You’ve got a frizz-free, summer hairstyle that looks great and helps keep all that hair off the nape too. 26 July-August 2015 selectcitywalk.com selectcitywalk.com July-August 2015 27 hair /style file Milkmaid m use The lowdown This cutesy European h airstyle has hairstyling taken the industry wit h storm for the best par its versatilit t, it is easy y and to do! Bri d the ng the braid top of your s to meet at hea the pins. Pull th d and hold it there w ith the help e rest of yo ur hair into of it with pins. a bun and Frizz-less an secure d adorable, don’t you th ink? One of the quickest and simplest ways to hide frizz is a gorgeous low bun. Apply some anti-frizz serum along the lengths of your hair. Now, take a centre parting or a side one and twist the length into a low bun right at the nape of your neck. Pin it up to keep it in place and you could stick a summer blossom to add a punch to your look. All that frizz is taken care of and you’re ready to rock and roll in less than five minutes. Tousled tresses Up and down Chic and easy to pull off, the tousled ponytail is a hairstyle that hides frizz and looks great. Make a centre or side parting with a tail comb and spray the hair at the crown with a hairspray. Spray some of it onto your comb as well and comb down the front portion of your hair with the parting you’ve chosen. Gently comb the hair on the crown into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck. Allow flyaways or loose strands to fall around your face for that soft sensuous look. Under two minutes and all that frizz is concealed. There will be days when you want to leave your hair down and the frizz is a hindrance. What do you do? Simple – go for the half-up half-down hairstyle. To get this look, part your hair and start twisting loosely from the roots. Keep some volume at the crown and continue to loosely twist to the back of your head. Pick up these beauty products and conjure up a home spa for that dewy glow words | Shruti Tomar O f all those Greek-sounding words that spa experts throw around like facial lasers, photorejuvenation, microdermabrasion (sounds rather abrasive!), facials steams and so on to get the perfect skin, but who’s to say you can’t get that at home. Pick up the right products and conjure up a spa that suits you best. First off, choose a day wherein workload is less or none preferably so that you can give yourself that much needed attention. For the face, the first step is cleansing. Any DIY spa treatment you do at home should start with skin that’s squeaky clean. Use a gentle cleanser that’s not harsh on your skin (avoid soap) and wash with warm water. 46 47 home spa /beauty spot Hydrating sea salt crystal rose body polisher, Forest Essential, `2,250 for 200 gms Hair spa vitalising creambath, L’Oreal, (available at Looks Salon) Now to open up those pores. Facial steam is an easy simple thing to do at home. Heat up some water in a large bowl. Drape a towel over your head and let your skin absorb the steam for at least five minutes. You could add some herbs to the water such as mint or rosemary. Steaming opens up closed pores and provides deep cleansing to your skin. It hydrates as well as pulls out embedded dust or dirt from the skin. Use a homemade toner or a gentle store-bought one to tone your skin. Select one with great astringents, rich in antioxidants and emollients. Relaxing shower gel, L’Occitane `1,390 for 200 ml To maintain those gorgeous long locks, deep condition your hair with coconut oil. For curly and unruly hair as well as straight hair, coconut oil works as a great moisturiser and conditioner. Leave it over night or if you’re running out of time, condition if with a hot steam towel. It provides shine and immense relaxation. Hair spa shampoo L’Oreal (available at Looks Salon) Revitalising body scrub, L’Occitane, `3,190 for 200 gms Exfoliate your entire body with a granular scrub. Make one at home or pick one from the fabulous range at Forest Essentials or L’Occitane. Perform the scrubbing in slow circles so as to enjoy this treatment. Don’t rush it. Stand over a plastic sheet or towel so that the remains fall on it. After gently scrubbing all over, step under the shower and rinse if off. Apply a relaxing body cream. Your skin will be as soft as melted butter. Your shower can become your personal sauna when equipped with the right products. Turn the shower on and run it at its hottest temperature. Don’t stand under the shower at this point, naturally! While the water starts running and the steam is beginning to build up, take a warm washcloth and dab or spray some of your favourite relaxing oil. Lavender, rosemary and vanilla are perfect oils to destress. When you step into the shower, put the washcloth on your face and take deep breaths of the calming oil-flavoured steam. If he works with me, then it will be an honour for me. Your hairstyles keep changing. How do maintain these gorgeous curls? One thing I’ve realised is that sporting various hairstyles in films can damage your tresses. There have been films where I’ve worn my natural curls but then I’ve also had to get it poker straight for a few, and then I’ve had to sport a completely different style in others! I pamper my tresses regularly with intensive repair treatments. Three times a week, I treat my hair to hot oil and steaming. A beauty artist told me putting on makeup takes close to an hour and most women just wash it off in five minutes. He said one should properly wipe the makeup off and then use a toner, a moisturiser and an eye cream. It should take at least 10-15 minutes to remove makeup patiently. That really helped me, as my skin was really bad initially. You need to spend some time to take your makeup off.
