Welcome to the Poseiden Foundation's Second
Newsletter!
Thank you so much for being a major part of this wonderful organization.
As you know, our vision is to inspire the youth to dream and create lifechanging experiences through the empowerment of love and support.
Whether we're teaming up with high-risk youth organizations or with the
North County School District or Internationally, we want to provide children
with opportunities they might not otherwise be able to experience and
enjoy.
To bring everyone up to speed on what we've been doing lately-here's a
little look at our past events from August 2010-January 2011.

Poseiden West Coast Tour
This years 2nd Annual West Coast Tour was with professional athletes Mimi
Knoop, Abisha Alshebaiki, Eliana Sosco, Jessica Ferreira and Leticia Buffoni
and downhill skater Isabelle Fried.
We were very fortunate to have professional photographer Ana Paula Negrao
taking photos and Am Lea Taylor to join us during the 5 day tour, from North
County, San Diego to San Francisco.

We stopped at 2 different inner-city schools in San Francisco, Mira Loma
Elementary School and Mission High School. The Poseiden crew helped teach
the youth to skateboard and spoke to the kids about their experiences, which
motivated the students.
At Mira Loma Elementary there were over 80 after-school students that wanted
to be part of the skate program and more than half of these students were girls.
As for Mission High School, the have an after school Skate program that is
strictly for females in which 2 girls come from MIddle-Eastern background wear
skating is not acceptable by their family member or their society,but they
continue to come everyday after school to learn.

Our last school stop was at the Santa Cruz, organization Barrios Unidos, where
its not only a safe haven for immigrants and first generation youth but a
learning center where they teach the youth about peace and respect. They not
only have developed a production studio but have general classes where
parents and child can an learn how to better communicate their differences as
they accommodate to their new place of living.
All in all it was a great success and we can’t wait to go on tour for his year

Its another year at the Chili Bowl! Thanks to Toad and Salmon for
allowing Poseiden to be part of their event for the second year in a
row, we were fortunate enough to have our athletes on tour compete
and Poseiden put on a Grom contest on the street course.

Isabelle Fried and Poseiden Founder Micaela, gave mini 25 minute
skate clinics to all who wanted to learn how to skate surf. Gravity
Skateboards supported by giving 10 completes to Isabelle to teach and
give away for prizes.

The Grom contest consisted of Best Ollie, Best Sport and Best trick in
the mini-ramp. We had over 15 groms and each one walked away

During my flight home, my airline company stated that we would have
a delay due to weather in Bogota, Colombia for 12 hours. Once I hear
the news, I decided to get on Facebook and see who I knew that skated
there.
I have been following Nicolas Devalle’s skate photography now for over
6 months, but had no clue that he lived in Bogota, Colombia. He had
been following Poseiden and we were finally able to connected
personally all due to the flight delay.

Within 3 hours we set-up a skate contest at the local skate park in
Bogota. I brought product from Ecuador to give as prizes. And sent a
shout-out to all the skaters that lived in that area.
Once I arrived to the skatepark there was already kids, teens and adults
waiting to skate the mini-ramp. It was amazing the Colombia Police
even came to watch the youth skate.
After the contest we went to a couple of skate spots and shots some
pictures. Though I was stuck in Colombia for 12 hours, it was a fun
Christmas Eve and many kids that came left with a great Christmas

The tour dates were!January!25th - 30th in Quito, Ecuador. The Foundation's core
aim during this tour was to work with children and to help them realize the
possibilities of following their dreams. Five riders; Brazilian pro Eliana Sosco, USA
bowl legend Jen O´Brien, local Ecuadorian pro rider Pancho Moscoso, Radical
Skateboarder Magazine editor David Holguin and VidaSur owner Andres Holguin
and one photographer/filmier - Jenna Selby from the UK and Graffiti artist Luis "
Huesos" Donoso were brought in to coach and to talk to the students in 3 different
underprivileged schools and one orphanage.

The first group of kids we visited were from the orphanage Remanso de Amor. They
were so enthusiastic and excited about the visit that they kept hugging the coaches
and asking them questions about skateboarding and graffiti. Half the students
jumped straight onto the boards and the other half straight to the cans of paint.
The skate and graffiti scene is only beginning to take off in Ecuador, and it´s great
to see everyone starting off on equal footing.
We visited the Escuela Bernardo de Legarda Elementary/Middle school that has 3
different school hours (7am-1pm, 2-6pm, 6:30-10pm) due to the students work
schedules. There we were confronted by over 400 children. The school had set-up
the presentation for originally 60 students but the Director thought it too good an
opportunity to miss and decided to involve the first four primary grades. At first we
pulled girls and boys out of the crowd until there was a stampede of 200 children,
stepping over all the coaches going straight for the skateboards and wanting to
participate. At this point, the coaches thought that a demonstration would be
preferable, as there was not enough equipment for everyone. !In the classroom,
with over 40 students, Huesos gave them a lesson on how to draw human figures
and gave a demonstration on how to draw comic characters.

The following day we visited the Escuela Fiscal in the southern part of Quito. This
school is an indigenous school with no electricity or running water. The kid’s have
ever seen skateboards before but again they all took to it straight away and skated
non-stop for over an hour. The girls helped out the boys, giving them pointers on
their stance. Huesos also had the opportunity to Graffiti on the schools wall
representing the Ecuador's indigenous heritage and oneness with nature.!

The last day of the tour we went to Mitad del Mundo (The Equator) to visit another
school that is mixed with 80% indigenous students and 20% students that are
immigrants from other surrounding countries in South America. The school has
over 2 acres of land in which they are teaching the students about Eco-Tourism and
how to and why it's important to conserve Ecuador’s nature. Its a starting program
with little to none funding but the Directors dream is that the students at this

January 29th, 2011, we held a skate competition at the local skate park Parque La
Carolina. There was a really good turn of a couple of hundred people and over 35
males came out to compete and 3 girls from Guayaquil (Southern Ecuador) made
the 8 hour bus journey and 1 from Riobamba a 4 hour bus ride and 8 girls from
Northern and Southern Quito made the journey to “La Parque” just so that they
could be involved.

The males competition consisted of 6 heats of 8 and 8 minutes each heat. The
finals from each heat then went into a Game of Skate to determine who would take
First, Second and Third Place. Males First Place Winner walked away with: Zero,
Cole Deck, Destruco trucks, Etnies shoes, Bones Bearing, Ace wax, Etnies Skate
bag, Clothing, VidaSur Beanie,Bone wheels.
The females on the course were either learning to skate to the right of the snake run
with coaches Jen and Eliana or practicing for the Female Skate Jam. We have 6
girls sign-up which is actually a big turn out for the female scene in Ecuador and
had 15 minutes to skate. Each girls walked away with a Skate Deck, Bone
Wheels,Shirts.
