Happy Mother’s Day!
On the Cover
Little Lucy is daydreaming
in her backyard, under the
summer sun, communing
with Mother Nature. All of
us at Family Magazine wish
you a happy Mother’s Day
1today and always!
From The Publisher
3 generations: Me, Dawn & Oakley
This issue is dedicated to all you
Mothers out there. And I’m one of
you. We’re the source, what keeps the
generations flowing. We’re the glue.
We keep it together with unconditional
love, patience and sacrifice as our
children grow and change and eventually
become mothers and fathers themselves.
Through it all, we experience a multitude
of emotions: pride, excitement, joy, love,
heartbreak and pain and somehow we
manage to pull it off and nurture and teach
our children so they can have a better life
than we did, as our parents before us did,
and theirs before them.
So for all our love and dedication as
Mothers, one day a year has been singled
out to remind everyone, young and old,
men and women, girls and boys that, Hey!
There’s something to this business of
being a Mother! We’re the glue, give us
our due…not just for a day, but everyday,
May 13th can be the first day of Mother
appreciation year and we’ve gathered a
multitude of ideas for how to show all
Mothers in your life how much they mean
to you. Go all out! Buy them flowers, take
them to Brunch, stroll through a garden,
and at days end, hug them and kiss them
and tell them how much they mean to
you, which will mean the world to any
Mother you know. Next week you can
skip the brunch, but a hug and a kiss will
do. Mother’s! Here’s to you!
Happy Mother’s Day!

Fighting Childhood
Obesity
With the average weight of the American
population climbing every day, childhood
obesity has become a dangerous and
widespread health concern affecting families
across the country. According to the U.S.
Preventive Service Task Force (USPTF),
12–18 percent of U.S. children ages 2–19 are
obese. What’s more, enough food is supplied
in the U.S. to provide every person in the
country with a daily caloric intake of 3,800,
far beyond what is recommended—let
alone healthy—for the average American.
So it’s no wonder that obesity rates in children
are increasing in significant numbers.
While genetic factors do play some part
in 70-80 percent of obesity cases, poor
lifestyle choices are among the biggest
contributing factors to why people of all
ages become overweight.
“Children whose parents are overweight
are twice as likely to become obese,”
said Dr. William Muiños, who spearheads
Miami Children’s obesity program.
Dr. Muiños has helped hundreds of
children develop healthier lifestyles leading
to lasting weight loss results.
Statistics show that not only are Americans
eating more today than we were 20 years
ago, we’re also replacing a large number
of our home cooked meals with fast food,
prepackaged meals and dining out. We’ve
also been accustomed to eating very large
portion sizes. From a very young age,
children are being given excessive amounts
of candy and unhealthy snacks, soda and
sugary fruit drinks.
Meanwhile, in a world saturated with
technology, our children are spending
countless hours in front of the TV, computer

and video game consoles every day, taking
away from the time they could be spending
playing outside. And with education budget
cuts across the nation, schools are also
providing kids with less opportunity for daily
physical activities.
Setting Good Examples
“For parents, the best way to combat
childhood obesity is by making small,
permanent lifestyle changes both for yourself
and your children,” suggests Dr. Muiños.
“Set a good example by being active and
encouraging your family to join you.” Here
are some other small changes that can make
a big difference:
Limit the amount of fast food, candy,
soda and other unhealthy food your child
consumes each week.
Offer your child healthy snacks like fruits,
vegetables, nuts and yogurt.
Limit time for TV, computers and video
games to a few hours per week.
Don’t criticize a child for being overweight;
this can lead to poor self-esteem, depression
and eating disorders. Instead, offer your
encouragement and support.

“The average child should be getting
about 60 minutes of physical activity each
day. So if you know your child isn’t getting
that through a physical education class at
school, encourage them to join a sports
team or after-school activity. On weekends,
incorporate physical activities into your
routine. Instead of watching movies at home,
go to the park, ride a bike or take a walk,”
said Dr. Muiños.

NO PHONE CALLS PLEASE
Okay, so you think you’re a perfectly
reasonable and logical person. But
sometimes, when your mate says or does
something that makes you feel criticized,
ignored, or disrespected, you shout out
your defense and soon find yourself in a
full-blown war of words. You know the
situation is out of control, but you don’t
know what else to say to get your (totally
reasonable!) point across.
For instance, a friend of mine was
playing with her 4-year old daughter
in her bedroom while her husband was
watching TV in the living room. My friend
was having a nice time playing with their
daughter until suddenly she looked up and
saw her husband in the doorway, shutting
the bedroom door. Annoyed, she got up,
pushed the door open, walked straight to
the living room, and yelled loudly enough
for her daughter to hear, “You’re so rude!”
Her husband replied, “Well, I didn’t want
to hear the noise you two were making on
the toy piano.” “Noise?” she countered.
“The sound of your daughter playing is
noise to you? If you cared about your
daughter you’d shut off the TV and
come play with us!
My friend’s anger was understandable,
but yelling at her husband for such a small
thing, and within earshot of her daughter?
That’s inappropriate. And connecting
his shutting the door to the notion that
he might not care about his daughter?
Overreaction.
The red flag moment
`It’s easy for me to look from afar and
declare my friend in the wrong, but I’ve
walked in her shoes and I know it’s a lot
harder to bite your tongue in the moment.
What I’ve learned, and taught others, is
that an overreaction can actually be a
good thing. It can serve as a red flag that
something is missing…
As a general rule, overreactions happen
when there is a gap between how we feel
and what we say. In the above example, my
friend didn’t explain to her husband that
10

she felt that their daughter was missing
out on special father-daughter time. She
wasn’t upset about the door, but rather
about that fact that even on the weekends
when her husband was home, she was
still saddled with the full responsibility of
finding activities for their daughter. She
was frustrated and jealous because she felt
that her husband used TV time to escape
from family time, and she wanted to have
some escape time herself. All of these
points were reasonable, but they weren’t
articulated in the heat of the moment.
And even a pretty good husband and
father, is not going to be a mind-reader.
Say what you mean,
and mean what you say
When we overreact and then push the
issue under the rug, the storm of the battle
passes quickly, but the hangover leaves its
mark. Rather than being embarrassed by
our overreactions or continuing to justify
them, we should apologize and use them
to jumpstart deeper thought about the gap
between what we are thinking and saying.
Once you’ve filled in the blank in your
own head, go to your mate, ask him/her
to sit down with you a few minutes so you
can apologize and explain what you really
meant. That kind of talk leads to solutions.
Happy couples do fight, and they also
know how to make up.

Conversations to Change Your Relationship Without Blowing
Up or Giving In,” who frequently appears on CNN,

relationship advice. Visit her at www.fightlesslovemore.com

Events are subject to change or may be
cancelled or postponed without notice.
It is best to call and confirm.
The American Cancer Society’s goal for
this year’s “Relay for Life,” which will take
place on May 5th in Palmetto Bay, is to
help cancer survivors and their families:
celebrate, remember and fight back.
Different teams will gather up in groups
and camp out around a track. A variety
of food, games and activities will serve as
source of entertainment and fundraising
alike during the 18-hour event. Throughout
the relay several ceremonies will be held
to inspire and unify the participants. The
Relay kicks off with a Survivor’s Lap, in
which all cancer survivors present walk
together around the track as a symbol
of victory over the disease. When night
falls, those who were less fortunate and
lost their lives to cancer are honored in a
special Luminaria ceremony.
People light candles placed inside sandfilled paper bags individually marked with
the name of a person touched by cancer.
The bags line the track and represent many
lives lost, some of them decorated with
photographs, drawings or messages in
honor of their loved one. Lastly, the “Relay
for life” encourages individuals to fight
back against cancer and arms them with
the information to do so. People are offered
pamphlets about quitting smoking, getting
involved in advocacy groups fighting to
find a cure and following a healthy diet
that can help steer them away from getting
cancer. The event is free, open to the public
and begins at 4pm. For more information
about this event visit www.relayforlife.org
Mother’s Day
by Meribeth C. Shank
is NOT Just for Mothers
With these books we honor the
mothers in our lives, whether they
are our own, or chosen; whether
living near or far, or no longer alive;
whether young or old, rich or poor.
They have given us life, helped us,
and many times accompanied us
during our own life journey. May
they continue to hold a cherished
place in our hearts.
My Teacher,
Princess of Borscht
by James Ransome.
Dial, $16.99, Ages 5-8
by Leda Schubert,
illustrated by Bonnie Christensen.
Roaring Brook, $17.99, Ages 4-9
Although not every
teacher supplies a
mothering role (nor should
they), this heartwarming
story is homage to dedicated
teachers who give something
extra for their students,
such as is written in the
dedication. Teaching three
generations of children,
as does the teacher in this book, is a conscious decision to make an
investment in the development and education of young people.
The identified student, a girl with hair in cornrows, makes a series of
observations, in these pages, about why her teacher continues to teach
in the same school. When she could easily retire or teach across town.
Award winning artist Ransome reveals multiple talents as both writer
and illustrator of this irresistible storybook with active school-centered
paintings to accompany graceful text about a teacher who encourages
her students to use their talents.
She loves reading and she helps her students love reading too;
she talks with students about the things that are important to them;
she demonstrates ways to help others in need; she thinks outside the
lines and encourages this in her classroom; she makes it possible for
her students to showcase what they know, and helps them to make their
dreams come true. Students in her classroom not only make their own
contributions in class but they also hear stories from her of previous
students, once in this same classroom, who are now a significant
influence in the local community. Including their very own teacher!!
Recovering from pneumonia, Ruthie’s
Grandma reports that she’s starving
because the hospital food is awful.
Ruthie wants to make homemade borscht,
but Grandma falls asleep before Ruthie can
write down her recipe. Dad doesn’t even
like borscht, and despite Ruthie’s searching,
she can’t find Grandma’s secret recipe.
Across the hall from Grandma’s apartment
lives Mrs. Lerman who is the Empress of
Borscht -- she gets the beets started cooking
while Dad’s napping. Soon Mrs. Rosen, the First Lady of Borscht from down the hall,
arrives and advises Ruthie to add onions. And then the Tsarina of Borscht, from
the apartment next door, recommends lemons. Soon the three are arguing about
whether to add salt or sugar or honey.
When they leave, Ruthie thinks the soup is missing an important ingredient,
and adds a pinch of something that smells like pickles. She wonders if she
added the right thing as she and Dad take the soup in a thermos, meeting up
with Mr. Lee at the corner store. He gives them Grandma’s favorite sour cream
topping, and Ruthie imagines he is the King of Borscht.
Arriving back at the hospital, Ruthie’s Grandma is pleased and claims to
be Queen of Borscht, but Ruthie declares herself Princess of Borscht because
she discovered Grandma’s secret ingredient without ever finding Grandma’s
recipe. Loving relationships are clear not only from the colorful paintings of
cozy surroundings, but also in spite of the friendly bickering and gentle teasing
demonstrated in both text and humorous multimedia illustrations in this
beguiling family story.
Meet Me at the Moon
by Gianna Marino. Viking, $16.99, Ages 3-6
Mama Elephant tells Little One she must climb the highest mountain to ask the skies for rain, because the
land is dry. And like many young ones when their mamas must go away for whatever reason, Little One objects.
The wise mother elephant is encouraging: “You will feel my love in everything around you.”
Each time Little One asks a question or raises an objection about her leaving, Mama’s answer reassures
with a comment about the natural world; “But Mama, I won’t be able to see you.” “Find the brightest star . . .
it will be as if we are seeing each other.”
Sunlit illustrations range from morning into night, even including a double page spread of welcome rain.
Young children will be especially drawn to the loving interactions between Mama and Little One, sometimes
resembling a dance. And the alert giraffes and zebras from the background move protectively into the
foreground when Mama leaves.
The artist’s use of rounded shapes enhances the power not only of the rising yellow sun, and the brilliance of orange sunset, but especially the brightly lit moon,
as it seems to touch the earth, where mother and child meet. Kind giraffe faces, energetic zebras, curving elephant shapes, rolling clouds, plus animal shadows
and silhouettes against the horizon, add texture and tone to lyrical text, in an African setting that feels as universal as mother love.
Meribeth Shank works in the Media Center at Miami Country Day School, an independent school in Miami Shores, Florida, teaches classes on Writing Books for Children,

REEL LIFEE
WITH JAN
— by Jane Louise Boursaw
Movie reviews
for you and
your family
Avengers assemble, aliens
invade, and a well-known
vampire returns to theaters this
month. Here’s a look at what’s
new on the big and small
screens in May.
MOVIES in May
DARK SHADOWS
MARVEL AVENGERS
ASSEMBLE
Not yet rated; likely PG-13.
In theaters 5/11. Ok for kids 13+.
Not yet rated; likely PG-13.
In theaters 5/04. Ok for kids 12+.
Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins?
Yes, please. This re-telling of the campy
1960s TV series finds Depp teaming with
director Tim Burton. The story begins in
1752 with young Barnabas and his parents
setting sail from Liverpool to start a new
life in America. Jump ahead two decades
and Barnabas is living large as the master
of Collinwood Manor in Collinsport,
Maine. He’s rich and powerful, until he
breaks the heart of Angelique Bouchard
(Eva Green), a witch who turns him into
a vampire and buries him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas wakes
up in 1972 to find dark secrets and dysfunctional relatives living at
Collinwood, including matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle
Pfeiffer), live-in psychiatrist Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter),
Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller), Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Grace
Moretz) and Willie Loomis (Jackie Earle Haley). Also look for cameos
from some of the original characters, including Jonathan Frid,
who played Barnabas in the TV show.
Joss Whedon fans assemble! That’s
what they’ll be doing on opening day,
to check out what their favorite helmer
of Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer
is doing with the ultimate comic-book
film. The story ties together such
characters as Iron Man (Robert Downey
Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans),
The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Thor
(Chris Hemsworth) for a big-screen
franchise team-up like no other. Whedon not only directs, but also
adapted the script by Zak Penn, which focuses on a superhero lineup
assembled by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to combat a hostile
force out to destroy the world. Scarlett Johansson once again dons
the Black Widow costume, with Jeremy Renner stepping into the role
of ace archer Hawkeye. Tom Hiddleston also returns as Thor’s everdeceptive brother, Loki. While some of the individual Avengers films
haven’t been slam-dunk with fans (looking at you, Captain America:
The First Avenger), expect good things with this film.
MEN IN BLACK III
WHAT TO EXPECT
WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING
PG-13 for sci-fi action violence
and brief suggestive content.
In theaters 5/25. Ok for kids 13+.
PG-13 for crude and sexual content, thematic elements
and language. In theaters 5/18. Ok for kids 13+.
Those crazy Men in Black are
back, and this time Agent J (Will
Smith) is taking a galactic trip into
the past to save both the future
and his taciturn partner Agent K
(Tommy Lee Jones). After 15 years
of working with aliens from all
across the cosmos, Agent J is sure
he’s seen it all – until he learns
that history has been rewritten
and Agent K has been dead for 40 years. Aliens? Yes, we’ve
got aliens, determined to attack Earth and claim control. So
Agent J travels back to 1969 (hilarity ensues), meets young
Agent K (Josh Brolin), and tries to set things right in 24 hours.
What could have been a tossed-off sequel delivers the goods
with director Barry Sonnenfeld, whose long cinematic track
record includes the first two Men in Black movies. With his
understanding of the story and characters, Men in Black III is
fun and lively, with great special effects.
If you’ve read Heidi Murkoff’s popular book What
to Expect When You’re Expecting, now you can
see it played out on the big screen. Well, sort of.
Instead of a how-to tome on prenatal vitamins
and baby development, this uplifting romantic
comedy follows four expectant couples who learn
that having a baby is anything but predictable.
Cameron Diaz plays Jules, a household name
thanks to her popular fitness show. She’s expecting
a baby with Evan (Matthew J. Morrison), star of a popular TV dance show.
Meanwhile, outspoken infant-advice author Wendy (Elizabeth Banks) contends
with surging hormones as her belly begins to swell, and her devoted husband
Gary (Ben Falcone) is shell-shocked to discover that his overbearing father’s
trophy wife will soon be having twins. Then there’s Holly (Jennifer Lopez),
a professional photographer who’s scouring the globe for a child to adopt,
while her reluctant husband Alex (Rodrigo Santoro) gets his first glimpse of
fatherhood in a brutally honest (and hilarious) support group for new dads. And
while some parents spend years preparing to have babies, feuding food-truck
owners Rosie (Anna Kendrick) and Marco (Chace Crawford) get the surprise of
their lives when an impulsive act of passion has permanent repercussions. Kirk
Jones (Nanny McPhee, Everybody’s Fine) directs.

Seven Ways Parents

By Dr. Raymond J. Huntington
Studies show that parental involvement has a direct positive
benefit on students’ academic achievement. If you’re
looking for new ways to support your child’s school outside
of volunteering in the classroom or donating to the school
fundraiser, here are seven ideas on how you can help make
your child’s school a better place:
Join the Parent Teacher Association (PTA),
Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), or school advisory board.
Your school’s PTA (or similar organization) is one of the most
important links between you and your child’s school. It is designed
to enhance school-parent communication and help parents be
more involved in their children’s education. PTA will help you get
to know teachers and other parents and learn the most effective
ways to suggest and implement changes at your school.
Enrich the learning experience.
Great schools do more than teach students what they need
to know for standardized tests. Find ways to enhance your
child’s classroom. Talk with the teacher or principal about
potential enrichment activities and ask how you can help. If
your child’s teacher is interested in offering students learning
opportunities outside of the classroom, offer to help coordinate
and/or facilitate.
Share your knowledge.
Perhaps you have an interesting job, hobby or life experience
that you could share with a class or group of classes. If
leadership is your strength, consider devoting some time to
coaching a sports team or advising a fledgling but important
student group.
Improve communication.
At any school, good communication with families is a key to
success. You could help create a parent newsletter (or improve
the newsletter your school has) or start a phone tree. Ask your
child’s teacher how you can help him or her stay connected to
classroom parents.
Be an advocate for your school.
Sometimes, being a resource for your school can be as simple
as writing your school board members or legislators about
issues that are important to the school. Attend a school board
meeting on behalf of your grade or class or in support of an
initiative. If you see an area of improvement at your school,
explore the proper channels to voice your ideas.
Help increase financial and other resources.
Aside from school fundraisers, there are other ways you
can help your school secure needed funding or supplies.
Help research or apply for federal or private grants to benefit
specific school programs. If you have access to materials the
school needs, why not make a donation?
Help other parents.
If you are bilingual, you could volunteer to help translate at
parent-teacher meetings or translate signage and materials
for the school. Volunteer to provide transportation for students
or parents to attend functions they could not otherwise easily
attend. If you have particular expertise, offer to host a parenting
seminar and share your knowledge with other parents.
With a little creativity, you can find many ways to help your child’s
school be an enriching academic environment—and a vibrant
and welcoming community for all students and their families.

Learning
to Spot
Signs of
Asthma
Submitted by: Florida Center For Allergy & Asthma Care
Asthma is the leading cause of chronic illness
in children in America. Affecting one out of every 10 school-aged children, asthma can begin
at any age, but most children experience their
first symptoms by the age of five. Although
there is no cure for asthma, proper treatment
by an asthma specialist can help your child live
an active, normal life.
Asthma is a disease of the respiratory system in which allergy-causing substances and
environmental triggers cause the bands of
muscle surrounding the airways to tighten. In
South Florida, the most common environmental triggers include dust mites and cat dander.
Learning to spot the signs of asthma symptoms
is important for every parent. Common symptoms include frequent coughing spells, which
may occur during play, at nighttime, or while
laughing, rapid breathing, complaint of chest
tightness, a whistling sound when breathing in
or out, and shortness of breath. Additionally,
several risk factors can make children more
likely to develop asthma. These risk factors
include nasal allergies, eczema, family history
of asthma, exposure to tobacco smoke, and
frequent respiratory infections.
According to Dr. Michael Pacin, founder of
the Florida Center For Allergy & Asthma Care,
prior to puberty, boys are more likely to develop asthma than girls. After puberty, females
become statistically more likely.
“When hormones change drastically, allergies
change as well. Puberty can see a relaxing of

symptoms, causing asthma patients to appear
as though they have outgrown their illness.
However, asthma causes a patient’s airways
to become sensitive for life,” states Dr. Pacin.
Daily treatment of asthma includes proper use
of medications, avoiding triggers and keeping an eye on symptoms. “Asthma episodes
do not appear out of nowhere,” continues Dr.
Pacin. “They have a crescendo. Exposures to
allergens, respiratory infections or improper
use of medications are all major contributors to
asthma attacks.”
Working with an asthma specialist can help
parents learn to manage their child’s daily care,
safeguard their home and school from asthmainducing triggers, inform care-givers of their
child’s condition, and develop an Asthma Action Plan for managing asthma symptoms and
emergency asthma care. With the right treatment, children with asthma can breathe easy
once again.
