Another Voice
Church
A few months ago I asked
some of our preschoolers what
they like about church, since it
was the theme of our Sunday
School unit. Their responses
were interesting: “I like learning about God and Jesus” and
“I like my teachers and friends
at church” and “I feel safe at
church.” Others said: “I like to
play with puzzles at church”
or “I like pink and purple,
blue, light pink
and red.” They
also said: “I like
the fish,” “I like
to eat the crackers,” “I like to
make pictures”
and “I like the
stories we read
at church.”
These
responses remind me that
adults often
like similar
things about church. Don’t
we initially think of church
as a sacred space where we
can grow spiritually through
worship and Bible study?
Hopefully we also realize that
church offers the opportunity
for us to get involved in meaningful ways, by using what we
enjoy doing in ways that build
up the body of Christ. Many
times this connects us with or
allows us to help others, such
as using our musical gifts
to sing in the choir or play a
musical instrument, joining
a ministry team to care for
someone going through a
tough time, or volunteering
to greet people as they arrive
at church. Some people are
great with a camera, so they
volunteer to take pictures at
church events or help with
live streaming the worship
services; others enjoy painting, so they use
their skills to
paint faces of
children attending a carnival
with one of our
mission partners.
Still others love
to connect with
youth, so they
volunteer to teach
youth Sunday
School.
Hopefully, your
involvement in
Wilshire allows
you to find a place to grow
through worshiping, learning, giving and serving both
privately and with others. I’m
thankful that you give me opportunities to worship, learn,
give and serve alongside you
as we grow together.

x Volunteer Day with CitySquare. Wilshire members are
invited to participate in “For the City Volunteer Day” with
local mission partner CitySquare on Saturday, March 23,
from 10 a.m. to noon. Meet at 511 N. Akard downtown.
Volunteers will help repair and update units within the
CityWalk housing complex and assist with the community
garden there. All ages are welcome.
x Free computer classes. Registration for the spring term
of Wilshire’s computer education classes is Tuesday, March
26. Choose either the 9:30 to 11 a.m. time or the 6 to 7:30
p.m. time. Both sessions will be held in Room 3103. Class
schedules will be worked out based on needs of those who
register. Free classes will be taught for beginning and intermediate computer users, explaining email, Internet and
Microsoft Office applications.
x JFK memories sought. The Dallas Morning News is
conducting a year-long project on Dallas: 50 Years Post
JFK. Editors of the paper will be at Wilshire this Wednesday, March 20, to meet in a group with anyone who would
like to talk about living in Dallas in 1963 and how the assassination of President Kennedy jolted their spiritual lives.
x Order Easter lilies. It’s time to order Easter lilies to
decorate Wilshire’s Sanctuary on Easter Sunday. The
flowers may be given in honor or in memory of others. A
complete list of honorary designations and memorials will
be published in the Easter Sunday Tapestry. Cost is $12 per
plant. Deadline for inclusion in the listing is Sunday, March
24. Pick up forms in the church office.

I Am Wilshire
Marilyn Bick
“Through the deaths of two
husbands, I recognized I was
so blessed with family, friends
and church helping me during
my grief,” said Marilyn Bick,
who has been a member of
Wilshire since March 2002.
“I realized that I wanted to be
more than just an observer;
I wanted to be involved with
helping people.”
Her first move was to
become involved in Wilshire’s
care teams. “I attended the
first care team training and
have served on two care teams
since then,” she explained.
“I’ve loved working with these
individuals in need of help.”
In 2012 she completed
Stephen Ministry training.
She also serves on the board
of the Grief and Loss Center
of North Texas and volunteers
as Wilshire’s front-desk receptionist on Friday mornings.
Marilyn was born in Odessa, where her father began
working during the oil boom
in the early 1950s. “When
I was six months old, my
parents moved back to their
home state of Mississippi,”
she said. “Church was always
a part of our family life,”
and several family members
had been ministers. “I was
baptized at age 10 in a small
Southern Baptist church.”
When Marilyn was 13, her
dad took a job overseas with
an oil company, and she remained in the United States.
After graduating from high
school, she joined her parents
in the Canary Islands.
“While living there, Mom
connected with Southern
Baptist missionaries, and we
attended their church, which
was conducted in Spanish and
located inside an unmarked
door,” she said. “I sometimes
played the piano for services.”
Marilyn attended Mississippi College for two years
and finished at the University
of Southern Mississippi. “I
spent summers
with my parents in
whatever country
they were in,” she
said. She graduated in 1972 with
a bachelor of
fine arts degree
in art education
but “knew I did
not want to be a
teacher.”
She spent
the next several
years overseas,
first living with her
parents and then with her
first husband, who was from
Holland. When the marriage
ended, she returned to the
United States.
In 1977, Marilyn began a
31-year career with the Internal Revenue Service in Dallas.
In 1980 she married Newell
Oler, a professional pianist.
In the 1990s they formed the
Newell Oler Musical Enterprises Co. He died in 2001
of Lou Gehrig’s disease, but
his CDs are still selling on
Amazon and on his Web page
(mrpiano.com).
“I never felt at home in
any of the many churches
(Methodist, Baptist, Church
of Christ, Presbyterian and
Lutheran) that I attended
over the years in Dallas until
I found Wilshire,” she said.
“My mother, Julie Bankston,
whom many at Wilshire know,
was instrumental in my first
attending Wilshire. At that
time she was helping me
through the
last year of my
husband’s life.
“My mom
visits frequently
and spends most
of each summer
with me,” Marilyn
said. “She has
great friends
at Wilshire and
keeps up with
them while she is
in Mississippi.
“Shortly after
my husband died, my mother
suggested we attend Wilshire.
I knew immediately that this
was the church I had been
hoping to find in Dallas. I
joined in March 2002.”
She lauds Wilshire’s openness and friendliness. “It
doesn’t matter who you are,”
she said. “Wilshire is truly
a different kind of Baptist
church, with open arms to
everyone. Jesus is the focus of
Wilshire.“
By the numbers
In 2003 Marilyn married
Rodger Bick, a physician, and
they lived in California until
he became ill. They returned
to Dallas, and she cared for
him until he died in 2008.
“Going through the death
of two husbands taught me
what surviving spouses need
to know,” she said. In early
2009 she attended a grief session conducted by Laurie Taylor that “helped me through
my grief.”
In 2011 she and Minister
for Care Ministries Tiffany
Wright attended her second
care receiver’s funeral in West
Texas, and ironically, a CD of
the music of her late husband,
Newell Oler, was playing in
the background. “What a
coincidence to hear my late
husband’s music playing at
this small West Texas funeral
home,” she noted. “This was
my late husband’s only religious CD recording.”
Marilyn is an active member of Discovery Class. In
2012, she participated in the
trip to Israel along with members of Wilshire and Temple
Emanu-El. “It was the trip of
a lifetime,” she said.
Her outside activities and
interests include attending
symphony concerts, duplicate
bridge, and antique and estate
sales. “My other great passion
is my stance against animal
cruelty,” she said. “Animals are
part of God’s creation, and
pets are family.”

Next Sunday is Palm Sunday, the day we celebrate
Jesus’ triumphant entry
into Jerusalem. Palm
Sunday also begins Holy
Week, the time on the
Christian calendar when
we remember Christ’s
passion and crucifixion
as we journey to Easter
Sunday. Begin this week
of remembrance by joining Wilshire’s pastoral
residents for Evensong
on Sunday, March 24,
at 6:30 p.m. in McIver
Chapel. This resident-led
service offers a time for
quiet reflection on the
meaning of Palm Sunday.
Come and begin your
Holy Week with an evening of prayer, preaching
and worship.
