Hack an app (and a future) at PennApps
Successful past competitors
have pursued programming
careers after the hackathon
BY GEORGE ROSA
Contributing Writer
Hackers at PennApps this weekend will take home much more than
$30,000 in prize money.
For past winners, the hackathon’s
48 hours have gone a long way in
defining their current careers. They
claim that PennApps is more about
the process than the result.
For 2011 Wharton graduate Matt
Newberg, PennApps was the “single
best entrepreneurial opportunity”
he had in college. He and his team
produced MeepMe, which won the
Student Choice Award that year. The
app enabled Penn students to text
anonymously for the playful pursuit
of friendships or romance.
Newberg was able to “use the momentum” from that experience to
found his app-based startup, which
he now operates in New York.
For 2012 Engineering graduate Kevin Conley, the hackathon is
“more about having fun.” Conley’s
team won the 2010 Student Choice
Award for μWave, a microwave enabled with Youtube-playing, phonetexting and Twitter-posting capacity.
Hackers “get sucked into the energy
of the event,” Conley said.

When he walked into Home Depot, he was hoping to get arrested.
He had been incarcerated twice
before, but only for about three
months each time. “It wasn’t enough
time for me,” he said.
On Oct. 27, 2012, Jose took items
off the shelves at Home Depot and
put them in a bag, knowing that he
would be apprehended. Retail theft
was the minimum crime he could
commit in order to go back to jail.
“I had no choice but to put myself
[in prison],” said Jose, whose last
name is not included in this article

programmers, the gender ratio for
previous competitions has been 7030 in favor of men, Mittal estimated.
That disparity is a function of a gender gap in enrollment for relevant
courses.
Regardless, the hackers agreed
that their craft has become more
mainstream than ever in 2014. Sampath attributed the trend to the commercial success of technologies such
as smartphones and tablets. “Many
phones come bundled with development tools now,” Conley said. And
many experienced members of the
hacking community dedicate their
hacking hours to making tools that
facilitate entry for newcomers, he

Although he had stopped using
heroin eight years ago, he was still
addicted to methadone, a longerlasting, legal substance used as a
substitute for heroin.
But he worried that the emotional
struggle of a complete detox would
lead him back to heroin, so he decided that he needed to return to
jail to get clean.
“I told [the public defender], ‘I
need some type of support system
that can help me get back into society. I need someone to work with me
and help me,’” Jose said. “Because
I couldn’t do it alone.”
He found that support system in
the Goldring Re-entry Initiative, a
program at Penn’s School of Social
Policy & Practice. Since the 20112012 academic year, the GRI has
paired students pursuing their master’s degree in social work with men

College graduate and CEO Rich Ross talked about how he was able to transition to and
succed in the business world after majoring in English and International Relations at Penn.
In recent weeks, Penn has engaged in an active discussion about
addressing mental health concerns
on campus. College Houses are
taking their own steps to make
sure that residents feel supported
at home.
“We devote significant time in
our weekly meetings to discussing
not only how the residents in each
House — including the RA and GA
staffs — are coping with the recent
tragedies but also how we as a department might contribute to the
campus dialogue and any ideas to
improve services and communications,” Associate Director of Communications for the College Houses
Sue Smith said in an email.
College houses have adopted
a number of strategies, some independent and some collective,
to make sure their students feel
comfortable coming to house staff
with concerns about themselves
or friends.
To engage students with R As
and GAs, senior house staff and
other residents, Ware, Riepe and
several other houses have encouraged staff to keep their doors open
so residents can feel free to reach
out.
Riepe College House Dean Marilynne Diggs-Thompson said that

most apps — “was the trash.”
Nonetheless, the rush of sheer joy
and practical experience acquired in
those 48 hours makes it worthwhile,
the hackers said.
PennApps participants are “really
smart people driven to build things,”
said Newberg. “In that dynamic,
anything can happen.”
Pulak Mittal, a two-year director
of the contest and 2013 Engineering
and Wharton graduate, agreed fully.
PennApps attracts students from a
wealth of backgrounds, he said, from
those who study computer science to
those who dabble in programming

DOJ proposes
solution to
ongoing lawsuit
Solution would require
Wharton alum’s
company to sell assets
BY COSETTE GASTELU
Staff Writer
For Bazaarvoice, Inc. — a
software company founded
by 1999 Wharton MBA graduate Brett Hurt — the fallout
from a federal antitrust lawsuit
continues.
On Wednesday, the Department of Justice filed a proposal
for final judgment in its lawsuit
against Bazaarvoice, which,
pending court approval, will
require the company to sell
all assets gained from its 2012
acquisition of PowerReviews,
Inc.
Bazaarvoice and PowerReviews are businesses that
provide internet retailers with
ratings and reviews platforms
— software systems that allow
users to offer feedback about
the products available online.
The DOJ’s proposal is a follow-up action to the ruling that
Judge William Orrick of the
U.S. District Court of Northern
California handed down in the
lawsuit last month.
In the decision, Orrick
declared that since PowerReviews was Bazaarvoice’s
“closest and only serious
competitor,” Bazaarvoice’s
acquisition of the San Francisco-based company violated
a federal antitrust law.
The specific law at issue,
Section 7 of the Clayton Act,
prohibits business transactions that create monopolies
or significantly reduce competition within a particular
industry.
“Bazaarvoice’s unlawful
acquisition of PowerReviews
y
Enjo
has deprived customers of the
benefits of competition for 20
months,” Assistant Attorney
General Bill Baer, who leads
the DOJ’s antitrust division,
said in a press release.
With its proposed remedy,
the DOJ aims to “restore the
competitive landscape” that
would have currently existed
in the ratings and reviews
industry had PowerReviews
“not been illegally acquired
by Bazaarvoice,” Baer added.
The DOJ has also made certain provisions for the potential asset sale process. Among
the stipulations is a plan for the
possibility that PowerReviews’
value could have diminished
“so significantly that the asset
sale would not transfer a large
number of customers to the
divestiture buyer.”
The DOJ also seeks that
the court “appoint a special
master to oversee the divestiture process and monitor Bazaarvoice’s compliance with its
other obligations.”
Though the DOJ filed a motion for final judgment along
with the remedy proposal,
it is unlikely that the lawsuit
will end this month, given the
timeline of Bazaarvoice’s next
steps.
Matt Krebsbach, a spokesperson for Bazaarvoice, said in
a statement that the company
“will respond to the DOJ’s position in [its] own brief, which
will be filed with the Court by
March 5.”
He added that Bazaarvoice
continues to “provide the
Court and DOJ with other materials and information” that it
“believe[s] [are] relevant to the
determination of an appropriate remedy that achieves the
best possible outcome for [its]
clients and shareholders.”
Putting on PennApps: 2 days and $200,000
BY YUEQI YANG
Staff Writer
Forty-eight straight hours of
hacking starts Friday evening.
This weekend, the engineering quad will welcome over a
thousand hackers for the eighth
PennApps, a collaborative computer programming event that
first took place on campus in fall
2009. Top teams will take home
prizes totaling $30,000 in value.
Out of the 2,500 students who
applied for the competition this
year, 1,300 were accepted. The
committee that organized PennApps expects a total turnout of
1,200 students. The committee
has 10 executive board members and about 50 members in
Logistics, Sponsors, Outreach
and Marketing.
“Our event is unique because
we issue reimbursement of
transportation to everyone who
comes, so we cannot take everyone who wants to come,” said
Engineering junior Brynn Claypoole, director of the event. The
selection process was based on
each applicant’s GitHub profile,
LinkedIn profile, intended project description and hackathon
experience.
Penn students will take onefourth of the seats — a decrease
from the last event, which saw
550 Penn students.
“We took a lot of outside
people this time. We changed
the marketing for the event,”
Claypoole said. “Last time we
marketed towards everyone,”
she said. “This time we are marketing more towards people who
know how to program.”
The organizers hope that
even experienced student programmers learn more about
making apps at this year’s PennApps.
“This event is for the best of
the best coming from all over
the country,” Claypoole added.
She hopes that another event,
targeted at beginners, will happen later this semester. “I am
actually trying to plan a separate event that will be about
teaching you how to code over a
weekend, ” Claypoole said.
Who are the hackers?
Hackers will travel to Penn
from Singapore, England, Canada, Switzerland, Germany, Croatia, Mexico and Portugal. There
will also be “a full bus of people”
from Toronto and Waterloo. Girls
will constitute approximately 10
percent of the attendees. There
will also be around 40 high
schoolers, a big increase from
previous events. Approximately
15 percent of attendees will be
masters or Ph.D. students.
Financing PennApps
PennApps has 38 sponsors
this year, including Venmo,
Dropbox, Facebook, Google and
Goldman Sachs.
“We cold-emailed hundreds of
companies this time. Usually we
email recruiters or University
relations specialists for companies that are related to tech,”
Claypoole said.
“After the event, we will see
what the actual cost is, especially the transportation. Half of our

Some of their work on “Frozen” involved automating large

The indispensible character
in every Disney movie, Mickey,
also enters the scene surreptitiously between the shelves
in Wandering Oaken’s Trading
Post and Sauna and in the grass
when Olaf sings “In Summer.”
“The culture in Disney is very
light and just put [these characters in] for fun,” said Chai, who
received a masters degree in
Computer Graphics and Game
Technology from Penn in 2009.
“The artists and directors also
like it.”
Both Sinno and Chai picked
the “Let It Go” scene as one
of the most impressive scenes
from the movie.
“It’s the scene that goes
through a huge character transformation,” Chai said. He added
that it was a technically challenging scene as well, which
budget is for transportation,”
she said. She estimated that the
whole event will cost $200,000.
Although Penn does not fund
the hackathon, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
provides resources and access
to administrators to ensure a
successful event. The school
also provides furniture, including 300 to 400 tables.
Shelter and sustenance
Hackers will be able to take
rests in basement hallways, using the 80 air mattresses bought
by the organizing committee.
Caters include Desi Chaat
House, Au Bon Pain, Boston
Market and Insomnia Cookies.
“It’s my strong belief that we
want to give people a variety
[of food] to keep them happy,”
Claypoole said.
This year, PennHacks, a hardware hackathon, will take place
at the same time as the PennApps competition. PennHacks
will occur in two labs in the Engineering quad where the necessary equipment is available.
took several months to finish.
Sinno, who received a
master’sdegree in Computer
Graphics and Game Technology
from Penn in 2010, mentioned two
additional memorable scenes.
The final blizzard scene in the
movie was the most challenging
for him, even more so than “Let
It Go,” because there were “so
many layers of dust, debris, particles and snow pieces,” he said.
Another part that spoke to
him emotionally was “Do You
Want to Build a Snowman.”
“It has an emotional content
that can strike in many different
levels,” Sinno said, referring to
the sisterly love between Anna
and Elsa.
In fact, they both said this
sisterly love is what makes “Frozen” so popular. It focuses more
on love between the siblings
than on falling in love with a guy
the main character just met.
“It’s a very simple message
to get, and it’s something a lot of
people can relate to,” Sinno said.

strange, especially if
any of you know me.
Looking back, I’ve only
celebrated one Valentine’s Day
with a partner.
In fact, I’ve been single for
about 97 percent of my life. Aplus in being unattached. I qualify for “The Bachelor” more
than many of the contestants.
Gold star.
So as this February 14th rolls
around, my holiday preparations aren’t quite Hallmarkworthy.
For those not keeping score,
it’s time to pop the champagne
and celebrate my 20th Valentine’s Day single. I’ll be accepting gifts of china and any
tasteful platinum jewelry. After
all, who says I need a boyfriend
to enjoy this holiday?
Let’s break it down: Valen-
tine’s Day means cheesy pickup lines, chocolate and sappy
declarations of love. I can easily
celebrate in style by stopping
at CVS for some Crunch hearts
and popping in a Garry Marshall movie.
In fact, I’m stoked. This is
going to be a great February
14th. After all, why would I need
a boyfriend to enjoy a heartshaped donut?
There’s so much pressure put
on having a significant other.
It’s not just about whether you
have a special someone — it’s
about a Facebook relationship
status, someone you can introduce as “my boyfriend.”
Date parties ask me to bring
a date, and then I spend the rest
of my semester tearing my hair
out, trying to manufacture my
own personal Prince Charming
out of thin air.
Relatives start conversations
by asking, “So, have a boyfriend
yet?” I’ve said no so many times
that they brought me a list of
top cat breeds at the annual
barbecue.
In fact, our culture is so obsessed with who’s dating whom
that people on the internet have
been arguing about whether fictional characters are attached.
It was front-page news when
J. K. Rowling announced she
had changed her mind and that
Hermione Granger should not
have ended up with Ron Weasley. As she dropped that bomb,
she said she could “hear the
rage and fury it might cause
some fans.”
Apparently, I’m the only one
whose world has not shattered
over the idea that two fictional
characters are no longer fictionally married.
JKR, knowingly “breaking
people’s hearts” right before
Valentine’s Day! Is love dead?
The outrage this caused fans
is understandable, but also a bit
degrading if you think about it.
Hermione Granger is an excellent role model and the brightest witch of her age, whether or
not she ended up marrying Ron
Weasley.

Don’t get me wrong — I loved

I had an excuse to bake an extra

and I had someone who didn’t

The little pink pill
THE SCREWTINIZER | Sexual desire can’t be reduced to the stuff in female Viagra
I
t’s Valentine’s Day. The
candles are lit, the lingerie falls to the floor,
the condom is on and
then … nothing. She’s
just not that into it.
Allegedly, this type of disinterest in sex affects one-third of
women, according to one study.
So, just in time for Valentine’s
Day, one company found a solution: female Viagra.
The drug just went to market
in the United Kingdom in the
form of a little pink pill called
Lady Prelox. In a weird way,
it’s a sort of accomplishment
for women, since it’s the first
alternative to male Viagra —
which has been on the market
since 1998 — made specifically
for women.
But Lady Prelox is not quite
a feminist advancement. Sure,
it’s nice to bring women into
the conversation about sexual
advancements, but unpacking
the meaning of “arousal” and
“desire” is not as simple as a
pharmaceutical aphrodisiac.
The way that Lady Prelox
works is a lot like Viagra — essentially, it increases circulation. The manufacturer claims
that it “boosts libido and increases arousal in women” by
promoting blood flow to sexual
organs and the brain.
It’s fair to say that increasing blood flow would lead to
“arousal”: the quickening of the
heartbeat, shortening of breath
and natural lubrication.
And for many women, that
might be just the trick: getting
the engine started. But without
already feeling mental desire
— that rasping, raw sense of
wanting to get it on — the physical arousal can only go so far.
Often when we say that we
aren’t aroused, what we mean
is that we don’t feel that desire
to have sex. That might come
from a lack of erotic stimulation, from feeling distracted
or tense or simply from a low
libido.
The first two stem from a
sense of feeling reluctance,
or even shame, about claiming time to be sexual. Women,
more than men, are inclined to
feel ashamed of erotic fantasies, of watching pornography
or reading erotic literature or
taking time to indulge in erotic
desires.
But some women simply
have lower libidos, and that’s
completely normal. The growing interest in forms of “female
Viagra” like Lady Prelox can
make it seem like not feeling
readily available for sex is an
abnormality.
To be fair, some women do
have physiological problems
w ith vasocongestion (the
physiological signs of arousal).
Drugs like Lady Prelox might
help to resolve those issues.
There have also been clinical
trials for a drug called flibanserin — but the FDA rejected
its application for approval
in December (just this week,
flibanserin’s makers reported
that they would continue clinical trials).
So yes, there is definitely
a component of arousal that
has to do with the chemistry
of brain and body. But desire is
much more slippery — and has

Giving fraternity
recruitment another go
Frats reach out to more
students during secondround recruitment
FRATERNITY
RECRUITMENT STATISTICS
BY MELISSA LAWFORD
Staff Writer
Just because formal recruitment is over, that doesn’t mean
you can’t get into a fraternity
anymore.
Several fraternities are currently participating in secondround recruitment, reaching
out to the 157 students who participated in formal fraternity
recruitment but did not receive
bids.
The Office of Fraternity and
Sorority Life passed on the
contact information of these
students to six fraternities that
wanted to increase the size of
their new member classes.
College junior and Interfraternity Council president Jimmy
Germi said that roughly 25 bids
were issued to students as a
result of second round recruitment last year. He expects the
numbers to be comparable this
semester.
Second-round recruitment
is not regulated like formal recruitment, Germi explained.
There is no set bid deadline,
and the approach “varies a little
bit from chapter to chapter,” he
said.
Alpha Sigma Phi, one of
Penn’s newest fraternities,
which went through formal recruitment for the first time this
January, is now participating
in second-round recruitment.
The fraternity issued seven bids
after formal recruitment, five of
which were accepted.
The fraternity is now hoping
to expand the size of their new
member class, president and
Wharton senior Elias Bernstein
said.
Alpha Sigma Phi’s approach
to second-round recruitment
is to hold one-on-one meetings
with interested students, and
last Friday, prospective new
members had dinner with all of
the fraternity brothers.
“I’m surprised more fraternities don’t take advantage of the
opportunities,” Bernstein said.
“We’re really happy with how
it’s going.”
Wharton freshman Brendan
Stone joined Phi Sigma Kappa
through their second round of
recruitment this semester.
Although he received a bid
from a different fraternity during formal recruitment, Stone
explained how the first round
does not always allow students
to find a place that really suits
them due to the “problems of
trying to split your time [among
the fraternities].”

Germi also said that having
three nights of open-round recruitment is not always enough
for some students to find a fit
with a fraternity. Second-round
recruitment can play “an essential role” because sometimes
students may be ill or focused
on only one house the first time
through, he said.
Now the recruitment chair
in Phi Sigma Kappa, Stone outlined how the fraternity is reaching out more “by word of mouth,”
contacting students who they
think might be interested in joining. They have so far recruited
roughly 12 brothers through second-round recruitment, he said.
College junior Matthew Hanessian, president of Sigma Alpha
Epsilon, one of Penn’s largest
fraternities, described secondround recruitment as a “great
opportunity” for students who
“maybe didn’t find the right fit
the first time.”
SAE issued a total of 25 bids
this January, 18 of which were
accepted, giving the fraternity a
significantly larger pledge class
than the average of 14.5 new
members. The fraternity is not
participating in second-round
recruitment because of this,
Hanessian said.
He explained that because
students can be offered multiple
bids but will ultimately accept
only one, new member classes
can be smaller than expected.
This can be a strong incentive
for fraternities to participate
in second-round recruitment,
he said.
Hanessian added that second-round recruitment is a good
example of Penn’s generally inclusive culture when it comes
to encouraging participation in
student organizations. “Penn
does a really good job of finding
places for people to feel welcome,” he said.

she has been spending more
time in her office with the
door open for the past two
weekends. “This gives me
the opportunity to provide
them with the list of resources offered on campus, or, to
actually walk them over to
CAPS if necessary,” she said.
RAs and GAs have been doing the same.
Like in Riepe, one of the
ma i n i n it iat ives i n Wa re
recently has been to make
sure that RAs and GAs are
available to students, leaving
their doors open and encouraging students to spend time
in communal areas like floor
lounges.
C ol le ge f r e s h m a n a nd
Ware resident Olivia Graham
said her GA has approached
her personally to encourage
her to refer any friends who
might be str uggling w ith
mental health.
On the wester n side of
campus, open doors seem to
be less common. Harrison
College House Dean Frank
Pellicone said that unlike the
Quad, his residents are not
allowed to keep their doors
open for fire safety issues,
but he would be happy for
that to occur if it were possible.
College sophomore and
Du Bois resident Brianna
Sainte said her RA has not
reached out to her. She suggested that if RAs or other
staff reached out to residents
about mental wellness on a
personal level, that might be
“a little bit more helpful.”
A ll college houses also
have a CAPS liaison, Smith
said. Some college houses
use these liaisons as advisor s or t o br i ng ment a l
health professionals directly
to residents.
Pellicone said that Harrison has a number of upcoming events focused on
mental wellness, including
a dinner with CAPS in the
coming weeks. Other events
include a workshop led by a
resident who is a member
of Active Minds and time
management workshops led
by the Weingarten Learning
Resources Center.
Diggs-Thompson said that
in her ex per ience, CA P S
events “are not ver y well
attended as students seem
to prefer quite often to connect and to comfor t each
other.” She is still interested
in scheduling an event with
CA PS either within Riepe
or collectively with the other
Quad houses.
Gregror y College House
has hosted office hours with
CA P S a nd has been d istributing information about
other resources available
on campus, but House Dean
Christopher Donovan said,
“beyond that, we haven’t really done anything specific.”
Du Bois House Dean Trish
Williams said in an email
that her house’s CAPS liaison adv ises and supports
house staff.
“Out of concern for staff
who themselves may be feeli ng over whel med du r i ng
these challenging times, our
CAPS liaison has been invited to a staff meeting to talk
to staff, not only about their
assisting our undergraduate
residents, but on how to take
care of themselves, as well,”
she said.
Ware, Dubois, Harrison,
Gregory have also dissemin at e d i n for m at ion ab out
ment a l he a lt h r esou rces
on campus. They send out
emails to residents, post
information in public hall
bathrooms or make CA PS
pamphlets available.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2014 PAGE 7
Riepe and several other
college houses have planned
events aimed at stress reduction.
Riepe is known for its comfort food events and has been
placing more emphasis on
those events recently. “In
my opinion, in addition to
offering official CAPS and
campus resources, it is important that our residents
come together for various
event s t o con nect , ch at ,
commiserate and to socialize with each other,” DiggsThompson said. “So even
t houg h c om i ng t oget her
over comfort food events may
sound trivial, I feel that these
events can be important.”
R iepe R A and W har ton
junior James Fangmeyer is
also setting up a meditation
corner.
Pellicone worried that adding additional house events,
beyond those focusing on
mental health, would place
add it ion a l st r ess on t he
house staff. “We’ve emphasized more that these events
are great stress reducers,”
he said. He added the house
has anticipated higher attendance at recent events, so
they’ve made sure they have
more food.
Donovan said that Gregory’s RAs and GAs have been
working to make sure that
residents know about initiatives elsewhere on campus,
but they’re mainly focusing
on “doing small, intimate,
low-key events over the past
few weeks.”
“What’s clear is we need
to make sure that people feel
comfortable coming to the
staff members if they have
issues or know people who
do,” Pellicone said, and he
has definitely noticed such
an increase.
College junior and Ware
Senior House Ma nager
Marc-Anthony Serrano said
that students have been reacting positively to the increased awareness of mental
health support within the
house, and he has noticed
that students have been coming to talk to him or reaching out over Facebook much
more frequently.
While Serrano definitely
supports all the steps that
Ware has been tak ing recently, “I don’t know that it is
enough,” he said. “It’s kind of
sad that it’s taken this tragedy to spur this increase.”
Donovan has not seen such
an increase in Gregory. “Obviously there are some students who are either feeling
stressed or are responding
to recent events on campus,
but we haven’t seen a large
number of students talk to us
yet,” he said.
“We’re keeping our eyes
open and responding to what
the students tell us,” he added.

Big-time CEO
Ross still helps

It’s not just Wharton graduates taking the lead in business.
When Rich Ross left Penn
in 1983 with a Bachelor of
Arts in English and International Relations, few would
have expected him to become
the CEO of a major entertainment company.
Ross himself, whose compa ny Shi ne A mer ica has
produced both scripted and
reality shows like “The Biggest Loser,” “The Bridge,”
and “Master Chef,” was less
surprised. “I knew what I
wanted to do when I was 12,”
Ross said. “I knew I wanted
to be part of that world.”
Prior to his time at Shine
America, Ross was the chairman at Walt Disney Studios
and worked at Nickelodeon,
where he was executive producer of the “K ids Choice
Awards,” among other shows.
Ross chose to attend Penn
to stay grounded. He wanted
to “leave college and be able
to succeed” and thought he
received a “great education
surrounded by very pragmatic people.”
“Entertainment [is about]
telling great stories,” Ross
said. He noted that his English degree “fostered an ap-

while his studies in IR “gave
[ him] a well-rounded ap proach.”
Co-director of the International Relations Program
Frank Plantan Jr. said that
College students like Ross
stand a good chance of being successful in business.
“Business today is looking for
people who can do research,
who can write well … and who
have strong analytical skills,”
he said. “We find those students are in high demand.”
This Tuesday, Ross came
to campus for a mentoring
meal and larger talk hosted
by the College of Arts and
Sciences, as he has for more
than 25 years. Ross shares
his email address with the
students every year.
“The degree to which he
has com m itted t i me a nd
energy to Penn students is
astounding,” former Senior
Associate Director of Career
Ser vices Pegg y Curchack
said. Claire K lieger, who
currently holds Curchack’s
position added, “He is a real
champion of Penn.”
Ross has also mentored
several Penn students over
the years, including Bing
Chen, a 2009 College graduate and cur rent YouTube
Globa l Cr e at or Develop ment and Management lead
at Google. Ross encouraged
Chen to pursue a degree in
English and take a minor in
Wharton rather than getting
a second degree like he had
planned.
Upon graduation, Chen became the only Penn student
to join Google’s executive financing program, beating
out applicants from Wharton.
“[ The study of English]
broadens your mind and gives
you a way to operationalize
abstractions,” Chen said.
After Chen met Ross for
the f irst time dur ing his
sophomore year, he carefully crafted an email. Three
weeks after the talk, Chen
finally sent the email, and he
quickly received a response.
Ross said Chen was one of
only four students to email
him that year, and Chen was
shocked almost 200 other students who attended the event
missed this opportunity.
This led to a seven-year
mentorship.
Chen r ememb er e d t he
most valuable piece of advice
Ross has given him. “Being
well-liked is more impressive
than being a walking resume
… especially in entertainment,” Chen said.
As a charismatic Penn student at the time, Chen had
considered himself to be fairly likable and was surprised
by this statement. Ross clarified that when he asked how
Chen was, Chen had instead
listed his activities.
Ross’ ability to pick up
on people’s traits, as he did
with Chen, comes from his
belief in the strength of listening. “The most powerful
superhero tool you can have
is listening,” Ross said. “Decisiveness is vital, but it all
starts with actually listening.”
“There are two types of listeners: one type who listens
and hears you [and the other
type] who listens, hears and understands everything you say,”
Chen said. “Rich is the latter.”

GRI helps
connect clients
to courses
RE-ENTRY from page 1
Philadelphia prisons.
These student interns work
closely with the offenders for
three months before they are
released and another three
months afterward to aid their
re-entry into the community.
They help their clients transition out of prison, assisting in
areas like employment, housing and education.
“There are social services
within the jail, and everyone
inside the prison system has
a social worker,” Cate Collins,
the director of the GRI, said.
“And then there are a number
of agencies in the city that are
providing good resources and
have good programs [for exoffenders]. But there’s nothing to bridge that gap.”
The GRI helps connect its
clients to these city-wide organizations, sometimes by
enrolling them in computer
literacy courses or helping
them gain entry to community college through agencies
such as Philadelphia RISE
— Reintegration Services for
Ex-Offenders.
On any given day, there are
9,000 people in Philadelphia
jails, Collins said. Over the
course of each year, 30,000 to
40,000 people cycle through
the prison systems and often
recidivate, returning to jail
soon after they’re released,
she explained.
“When a person who’s in-
carcerated is released, their
likeliness to recidivate is very
high,” Britney Thornton, the
GRI’s student coordinator,
said. “We know that each
month that someone is able
to stay out without returning, the likelihood that they
won’t ever return increases.
The model that we have walks
them through [those] first
three months to [help them]
never return to prison.”
Jose started working with
Fae Stone, an intern with
the GRI, in October — three
months before his release on
Dec. 23. Stone met with Jose
once a week to discuss his
goals and concerns about reentering the community and
to create a detailed plan of
action to implement upon his
release, which the GRI calls a
“discharge plan.”

ery week to meeting with Ms.
Stone because it’s a one-onone communication,” Jose
said. “I felt comfortable to
spill out and be honest, truthful. I feel like that’s the only
way I could help myself do the
right things.”
He took out the spiral notebook he used while incarcerated. He f lipped to a page
from his earliest meetings
with Stone, where she had
asked him to list some of his
professional and personal
traits. His answers were written in neat, capital letters:
H A R D -WOR K ER , SPI R ITUAL, SENSE OF HUMOR,
AMBITIOUS.
Jose explained that at the
same time he was working
with Stone, he decided to stop
taking methadone.
“I detoxed right there. I
went through all the emotions, the thoughts and everything in there,” he said.
“I started feeling a relief. I
started thinking more clearly.
I started reading books and
I could understand them a
lot more … I cried so much
because of happiness.”
Now that he is back at home
with his family, Jose plans
on enrolling in the Community College of Philadelphia,
where he hopes to study culinary arts.
He said his greatest challenge at the moment is finding a job that will hire an
ex-offender. Before he was
incarcerated in October 2012,
he applied for a job operating
forklifts. He had experience
and had gone through training to obtain certification.
“First thing they ask is if
I have ever been incarcerated — ‘Sorry, we can’t hire
you,’” Jose said, shaking his
head. “That’s like getting
shot, that’s like putting a hole
in me.”
He’s confident that Stone
and the GRI will help him find
employment, however.
“With the program, I don’t
feel alone out there. I feel like
I’m working with someone
who’s willing to help me and
support me in making different decisions,” Jose said.
One of Britney Thornton’s
clients, Cameron, who was
arrested for drug charges, felt
that the most helpful aspect
of the GRI was “just having
some help, period.”
“The other times [I was
incarcerated], I didn’t have
help,” Cameron said. “Britney has a nice personality, it
makes her easy to talk to. I tell
her everything.”
Stone explained that many
ex-offenders feel helpless.
“For a lot of [clients] it’s
very anxiety-producing and
frightening to be out in the
community. For one of my clients, I’m it — I’m his only resource,” she said. “He’s been
in the system his whole life
... He feels like the only thing
he’s good at is being in jail,
which is not true, but that’s his
image of himself. And that’s
really difficult to get past.”
After 16 months in prison
and five months working with
Stone, Jose is hopeful about
his future.
“The way I feel right now, I
don’t feel like going back and
getting incarcerated. I have
no urges of using [drugs] because of the support I have,”
he said.
“There’s no way I could
fail,” he said, pounding the table with each word. “There’s
no way I could fail.”

One year later, Quakers again affected by elements
W. HOOPS | Red and
Blue will have a tough
time handling Elis
veteran backcourt duo
BY SUSHAAN MODI
Senior Staff Writer
One year later, Mother Nature
still loves wreaking havoc in the
days leading up to a game between Penn and Yale.
Exactly a year ago this week,
when Penn women’s basketball
made the journey to New Haven,
Conn., three feet of snow fell on
Yale’s campus. The elements
forced the game to be rescheduled multiple times, as well as
a hotel evacuation at 4 a.m. and
ultimately a change in venue.
This year, with snow hitting
the Eastern Seaboard earlier
in the week, the Bulldogs (10-10,
4-2 Ivy) arrived in Philadelphia
on Wednesday, a night earlier
than usual. Luckily, both teams
will avoid off-court drama, and
the weather shouldn’t dampen
the narrative and importance of
Friday’s game.

The Palestra
Brown
8-12, 2-4 Ivy
Saturday,
7 p.m.
The Palestra
Within the Ivy League, it’s
very much a four-team race, as
only one game separates Yale,
Penn, Princeton and Harvard.
The Red and Blue (14-5, 4-1) will
have to play their best if they
hope to win and remain within
striking distance.
Unfortunately for the Quakers,
Yale has been Penn’s kryptonite
in recent years. The current
group of seniors has only beaten
coach Chris Gobrecht’s squad
once in the past three years and
dropped both contests last season.
In their last matchup, Red and
Blue spotted the Elis a 19-point
lead, and the team couldn’t overcome the hole it dug for itself.
“I think it’s important [to get
out to a good start], like every
game,” junior forward Katy Allen
said. “Especially with Yale, if we
come out stronger, it takes away
their momentum. They’re a team
that relies heavily on momentum. When they start well, their
whole night tends to go well.”
The Elis, who are coming off
a loss to Harvard last weekend,
have some of the best guard play
in the Ancient Eight. Senior Janna Graf and junior Sarah Halejian have averaged 10.2 and 15.6
points per game, respectively,
and each can single-handedly
keep Yale in the game.
“I think Halejian is going to
score just because of her natural
ability, when she’s got the ball in
her hands she can create her
own shot,” coach Mike McLaughlin said. “They got two of the
better guards in the league, for
sure.”
By opening up the lanes and
drawing the attention of defenders, Yale’s guards are some of
the league’s best at creating
space and open shots for their
teammates.
As a result, it will be particularly important for Penn, a team
that is tops in the Ivies in points
allowed per game, opponents’
field goal percentage and threepoint field goal percentage allowed, to limit the effectiveness
of the Elis’ guards.
“They’ve played a lot of minutes at Yale, [have] good composure, so we’re really going to
have to work hard,” McLaughlin
added. “It’s one of those things
where we’re going to have to
make them work for what they
get.”
No matter what happens on
Friday, the Quakers won’t be able
to let up on Saturday as they host
Brown (8-12, 2-4), a team capable
of putting the Quakers on upset
alert. The game will mark Penn
women’s basketball’s annual
pink game to raise awareness
for breast cancer.
But first the Quakers must
focus their attention on Yale.
“It’s really ironic, we spent
three days last year trying to
play that game at Yale … and
now the coin is flipped a little bit,”
McLaughlin said.
Snow or not, with an Ivy title
on the line, the Red and Blue
will have to hope the coin lands
in their favor.

Quakers hope to put solid performances together in final stretch
WRESTLING | After a
subpar performance last
weekend, Penn looks to
bounce back vs. Lions
BY SEAMUS POWERS
Staff Writer
For Penn wrestling, the plan
is simple as it enters the final
stretch of the season: just compete and let the results unfold
as they may.
“We’re gonna go out and
wrestle hard and see what happens,” coach Rob Eiter said
about this weekend’s home
dual against Columbia (6-4),
a team that demands respect.
Perspective factors in largely in the Quakers’ mindset.
They have no title to defend,
no winning streak to maintain.
“There’s no pressure anymore,” Eiter said. “What’s the
worst that can happen?”
AD search

TONY from page 20
to the process, it’s still beyond
pathetic that Wednesday’s open
forum drew an attendance of
just one.
In fact, it’s apathetic.
For starters, alumni, staff and
faculty clearly care more than
students about Penn Athletics.
These groups together comprised an audience of fifteen at
Tuesday’s open forum dedicated
to those particular sectors of the
Penn community, also not a robust number but at least enough
to facilitate a discussion. Moreover, I know plenty of alumni

important pieces to the program.”
C a pt a i n A nd r e w L e n z i
echoed Eiter, saying, “The
guys who are graduating have
been an instrumental part of
our team.”
Heav y weight Steve Graziano, who is 2-2 against Ivy
League opponents this season,
is one of a few seniors expected to compete on Saturday.
Penn will also put a senior
on the mats for the 174-pound
bout, whether it be Zach Agostino or Brad Wukie who gets
the call. Whoever does grapple
will have his hands full, as No.
10 Shane Hughes, who is 7-1 in
duals this season, will be the
opponent in waiting.
No. 20 Josh Houldsworth,
who competes at 165 pounds, is
the Lions’ other ranked grappler. Houldsworth is set to take
on one of Penn’s best, No. 17
Casey Kent.
Kent is look i ng to best
Houldsworth for the second
straight time, as he won last
year’s matchup, 1-0.
“He’s by far our most consistent kid right now,” Eiter
said of Kent. Eiter also called
Houldsworth “very smart.”
“It’ll be a good match, that’s
for sure.”
more once Bilsky’s successor
takes over.
And since I was one of only
three students in attendance at
Wednesday’s open forum, I said
all of this point blank to the advisory committee, including Penn
Provost Vincent Price and Penn
Executive Vice President Craig
Carnaroli. I applauded Bilsky’s
fundraising efforts and I questioned some of his personnel
and marketing decisions. I quite
ironically lamented student apathy towards Penn Athletics to a
committee that was getting ignored in real time by its student
body and talked about ways to
combat similar unconcern in
the future. I pointed to Franklin
Field, the Palestra and the Penn
Relays as historically incredible
resources in Athletics’ favor.
But I’ve written about all of
this before. I’ve spoken with Bilsky, Price and Penn President
Amy Gutmann previously on
these issues. I’ve taken advantage of that kind of access during my time with the DP so that
you, the student, can decide for
yourself where Penn Athletics
stands.
But when an advisory committee gives you the same access and you don’t respond, you
get whatever you get.
In the end, the advisory committee got a lesson firsthand
about the prevalence of student
apathy towards Penn Athletics.
They came, they saw, they got
stood up.
The crossroads that Penn
Athletics faces is between past
generations that automatically
rallied behind championship
varsity programs and future
generations that promise even
more demographically diverse
student bodies with ever-diverging extracurricular interests.
This crossroads separates the
past Penn Athletics that didn’t
need a marketing department
or record fundraising campaigns to figure prominently in
students’ lives for much of the
late twentieth century and the
future Penn Athletics that will
rely more than ever on philanthropy and increasingly refined
infrastructure within its varsity
programs’ boards and committees just to stay afloat. Before
students give back in the future,
they have to care in the present.
And many do. But apparently
not enough to draw any participating audience whatsoever to
help see Penn Athletics past that
crossroads when it’s asking for
help. The stark absence of such
an audience isn’t wholly indica-
Saturday,
1 p.m.
The Palestra
After a subpar overall performance at Brown, the Red
and Blue (5-6) are looking to
bounce back against a Columbia squad that has won five of
its last six duals.
The Quakers are also seeking to reverse their fortunes
at the Palestra, a site where
they are just 1-3 at this season.
And what better time to do that
than this Saturday, which is
Senior Day for Penn?
While the Quakers’ lineup
does not feature a set of highprofile seniors, this year’s
graduating class is highly respected.
“Some of them were [part
of] my first or second recruiting class,” Eiter said. “They’re
good, solid kids that are very
who care very much about the
athletic director search, some
who are encouraged by its trajectory and some who believe it
has been doomed from the start.
Yet hope and disgust are still
vital signs of engagement. More
than a dozen rows of empty seats
in an empty venue reserved soley for students are anything but.
At some point, the onus is on
the student to start caring. It’s
true that Penn Athletics itself is
to blame for much of the apathy
throughout the student body.
Indeed, Penn Athletics has to be
much better under the next athletic director at working through
student groups to promote athletic events, creatively raising incentives to come to these events
and more accurately evaluating
coaches and administrators to
give many programs a greater
chance of winning consistently.
Penn Athletics can and must do
Michele Ozer/Sports Photo Editor
Senior heavyweight Steve Graziano will take to the mat on Senior Day
against Columbia hoping to improve on his 2-2 Ivy record.
A win Saturday would give
Penn a chance to finish with
a winning dual record — both
overall and in the Ivy League.
Saturday also provides a
platform for the Quakers to
wrestle up to their own standards and also gain confidence.
“The [Brown dual] was not
a reflection of the quality and
talent level of our team by any
standard,” Lenzi said.
“Once you get some wins
under your belt, you start to
gain confidence, but a couple
bad losses can hurt that confidence. It’s important to build
that confidence and maintain
it.”
The Quakers will look to do
just that on Saturday as they
march toward championship
season.
“All bets are off right now,”
Eiter said. “Let’s strap on the
boots, and let’s get it on.”
tive of how little students care
about Penn Athletics, but I’ve
seen too many empty Palestras
and Franklin Fields to know that
it’s no anomaly either.
You certainly don’t have to be
a current or former senior sports
editor of the DP to be heard over
the next several weeks as this
search process runs its course.
But although the advisory committee could really use a multiplicity of student voices in its
ear right about now, perhaps the
many empty seats throughout
our courts, fields and now the
Hall of Flags have said enough
already.

W. TENNIS |
Suddenly-hot Quakers
set to take on Penn
State and Marshall
BY IAN WENIK
Sports Editor
Though a fresh coat of snow
is presently cover i ng the
Hamlin Tennis Center, winter weather isn’t about to slow
down Penn women’s tennis.
Saturday, the Quakers will
travel to State College, Pa., to
take on No. 57 Penn State and
Marshall in their first road
match of the season.
Penn (2-2) is facing a famil-
iar foe in the host Nittany Lions
(3-4) and an unfamiliar one in
the Thundering Herd (3-2). The
Red and Blue have evenly split
the 32-game all-time series
with Penn State but have only
played Marshall twice, winning meetings in 2007 and 2008.
The Quakers got off to a slow
start to the season but have
come alive as of late, winning
back-to-back matches over Akron and Rutgers by identical
6-1 margins.
Penn’s top performer over
the course of its recent winning streak may have been
junior Sol Eskenazi.
Playing at No. 1 singles, Eskenazi easily won both of her
last two matches in straight
sets. A repeat performance
would have the Red and Blue
in good position to pick up another weekend sweep.
The always pesky doubles
point may also ultimately prove
critical to the result of this
weekend’s matches.
Eskenazi has played a key
role in Penn’s doubles point
wins over the previous weekend, teaming up with freshman
Kana Daniel to win both of
their matches.
There could be some rust
on the road for Penn, which
hasn’t played outside of Philadelphia since Oct. 22. But if the
Quakers manage to shake it off
quickly, another sweep could
be on its way.

Unless Allen can find a magic
concoction of bench minutes to

the Red and Blue in the dust by
the second half.
Don’t believe it? Just look at
last year’s matchup at the Palestra.
Penn took a lead into halftime
before the Elis’ offense kicked
into second gear. Then-sophomore guard Armani Cotton led
the charge as Yale overtook the
Red and Blue late before beating
Penn a second time up in New

And after facing Yale, there is
still another full-length faceoff
with Brown.
Sure, Penn has six straight
wins against the Bears and has
won the last five matchups in
Providence.
But we already saw what happens when a shorthanded squad
comes into the second half of an
Ivy weekend when Columbia
lost to Penn without sophomore
point guard Grant Mullins. And
that wasn’t pretty.
When you look at the combo
of Jackson-Cartwright, NelsonHenry, Dougherty and Hicks,
you know that the Quakers have
the star power to excel in Ivy
play.
But without a bench to support
them, stars mean nothing.

“It really doesn’t matter to

senior captain Fran Dougherty said. “On an Ivy weekend,
each game is just as hard and

Yale is led by sophomore
Justin Sears, the two-time defending Ivy League Player of

forward ranks fifth in scoring and fourth in rebounding

he advisory committee searching for Penn Athletic Director
Steve Bilsky’s successor held an
open forum for students to discuss its search process and solicit feedback
Wednesday afternoon at Houston Hall.
All 4,203 square feet of the Hall of Flags
were reserved for this event, the perfect
— and only — opportunity for students to
participate in a dialogue with committee
members about the direction of Penn Athletics and the qualities they’d like to see the
next athletic director possess.
And yet, not including Daily Pennsylvanian Senior Sports Editor Steven Tydings

and myself, one student showed up. One.
You’d think this would be an event of interest to at least a few members of the Penn
student community. Athletes and Red and
Blue Crew members obviously should have
a vested interest in this search process, but
so should anyone who takes advantage of
recreational spaces such as Penn Park and
Pottruck Fitness Center.
If you partake in any recreation on this
campus, you should care who the next
athletic director is, because that person
will be in charge of overseeing every recreational facility, membership service and
wellness program at this university. That’s
a big deal without even taking into account
the intercollegiate varsity athletics that
you spectate, participate in and read about
every day.
But unless you’re UMOJA representative
Denzel Cummings, you weren’t there.
While it’s true that anyone can submit
comments and suggestions on the search at
the Office of the Provost’s website devoted

An empty Franklin Field is symbolic of Wednesday’s open forum regarding Penn’s search for a new Athletic Director, which drew a grand
total of three students. As the makeup of Penn’s student body has changed over the years, so too has enthusiasm about athletics.
Just two more obstacles for the

or Penn basketball, it seems
that for every step forward,
there is a subsequent step
back.
And after beating Cornell and Columbia last weekend to stay in the
Ivy chase, Penn’s new step backward
came in the form of yet another injury.
Freshman guard Matt Howard,
who broke out with 15 points combined
versus the Big Red and Light Blue,
broke his foot at practice on Tuesday
and is now out for the season.
But Howard’s is just one in a series of injuries that has limited coach
Jerome Allen’s bench this year. Junior guards Patrick Lucas-Perry and
Camryn Crocker are both out for the
year with leg injuries while freshman
guard Preston Troutt is also done for
the season.
That doesn’t factor in the ongoing injuries that have plagued sophomore guard Julian Harrell and junior
forward Greg Louis, both of whom
missed Penn’s games last weekend.
So where does this leave the Red
and Blue? Hobbled to say the least.
It’s not like any of these five were
expected to carry the Quakers this
season. Crocker came into the year
as one of many backup point guards.
Lucas-Perry was a three-point specialist last year while Harrell and
Louis each showed promise in 2013-14,
but ultimately were inconsistent.
But all of that adds up to a lot of
missing pieces and minutes that Penn
could recieve from its bench.
So when Penn takes the court in
New Haven on Friday to face Yale,
the starting lineup will likely not be
any different from this past weekend.
But when the Elis go to the bench and
give a breather to their top starters,
the Quakers will not be afforded the
same luxury.
That means another weekend of
35-plus minutes from Fran Dougherty
at forward. And another 70 combined
minutes from Miles Jackson-Cartwright and Tony Hicks in the backcourt.
It also means pushing Darien Nelson-Henry and Steve Rennard to their

After being limited against Cornell and Columbia due to foul trouble last weekend, Penn sophomore center Darien Nelson-Henry will need to have a bigger impact this weekend in road matchups
against both Yale and Brown. Nelson-Henry, who scored 10 points in Penn’s last game against Yale, likely will be tasked with stopping Yale’s two-time defending Ivy Player of the Week Justin Sears.

A new string of injuries. An extra

Throughout this season of inconsistency, nothing seems to be out of
the ordinary for the Red and Blue.
Coming off its first sweep of an
Ivy weekend doubleheader in nearly
two years, Penn men’s basketball
hits the road to take on Yale and
Brown this weekend, two of the
three squads currently ahead of the
Quakers in the Ivy League stand-

Entering this weekend’s contests,
both the Elis and Bears have put
together surprisingly successful Ivy
campaigns thus far in 2013-14.
But staunch competition isn’t the
only thing Penn will be dealing with
on its upcoming road trip.

Haven, Conn., on Wednesday night,
a day earlier than normal. Penn was
also forced to practice in Yale’s gym
on Thursday.
Freshman Matt Howard suffered
a broken foot earlier in the week
and is out for the remainder of the
season. The rookie was coming off
his two best performances in a Penn
uniform last weekend when he went
down in practice.
Practicing away from home and
Howard’s injury are just two more
obstacles for the Quakers to overcome.
“Injuries are part of the game, and
unfortunately that’s something we
cannot control,” coach Jerome Allen
said. “Matt got hurt on a simple play,
but this just shows that all guys need
to be ready to play at all times.
“We’ve got 10 or 11 bodies now,
and that’s enough to get it done, but
everybody is one play away from being closer to helping us win.”
Although leaving a day early for
Yale disrupted Penn’s normal routine, the Quakers (6-13, 3-2 Ivy) seem
to be embracing yet another challenge in this tumultuous season.
“I don’t want to say it’s awkward,
but it’s definitely different and it will
be a good test for all of us,” sophomore center Darien Nelson-Henry
said.
Against the Elis (11-9, 5-1), the Red
and Blue will be facing a team that
has beaten them three times over
the past two seasons.
Since losing five of six contests
in December and January, the
Bulldogs have rebounded. Yale has
