Dear Craft Fair Friends,
This year will be our 10th
Hamilton Craft & Quilt Fair
– thank you craft lovers for
welcoming us back each year.
Putting this event together is a real team
effort with craftspeople from all over New
Zealand contributing to it. This year, for the
first time, the Creative Fibre group will hold its
annual exhibition at the event – in previous years,
we have had their wonderful “experience” display,
but this is the big one!
There’ll be plenty of magnificent quilts
on show too – from both Australia and
New Zealand. Make sure you check
out the Seven Deadly Sins quilts – it’s
amazing what quilters think of when
they’re given a ‘sinful’ theme!
Plus there’ll be fantastic shopping
and loads of demonstrations and
workshops for you to stock up on
ideas and craft materials. Block
out your diary now!
See you there,

Add your craft tip to the
Tree of Knowledge
at the Craft & Quilt Fair!
Do you have a tip
– or two – about
any craft you’d like
to share?
If so, you can add them
to the Tree of Knowledge
at the Craft & Quilt Fair.
Simply go to the website at
www.craftfair.co.nz and print
one of these shapes – a flower,
a leaf or a bird. Then cut it out
and write your tip on it.
After that you just colour it in
and decorate it or embellish it
any way you like, and bring it
along to the Craft & Quilt Fair.
Finally, attach your tip to the
Tree of Knowledge on display
at the Craft & Quilt Fair and
share your idea with thousands
of other visitors.
But that’s not all – if your tip is
judged to be among the top
101 of those received, it could
be published in a book in 2012,
called 101 Tips for Craft!*
*By adding this tip to the Tree of Knowledge at a Craft & Quilt Fair, you warrant
the material is the author’s original work and if reproduced or published by
Expertise Events Pty Ltd, there are no payments or royalties due to the author
at any time.

Embroiderer Jane Siddall may be engaged in
one of the gentle arts, but the subjects are
anything but sedate.
Drawing on the magical and
mythical, Jane’s beautifully
stitched, sketched and collaged
creations often feature half
human-half, half-animal
creatures, wild women and
figures of the imagination.
Transformation is a recurring
theme and fairy tales, myths
and legends are a source
of inspiration.
The Bird Wife (detail)
Jane has a particular interest in feminist rewriting of fairy tales.
Originally many of these tales were not bedtime stories for children,
but were told for women, by women, and contained advice on
suitable marriage partners and warnings about life. Jane’s work,
Cloth of Honour, explores a myth common in a number of cultures;
a story of a man who steals a woman’s feather cloak so she
cannot fly away, her search for it and her freedom.
Jane resides near Hamilton and is guest selector for Creative
Fibre’s National Exhibition this year. See an exhibition of her
work at the fair where she will demonstrate on selected days.

violence over the past 20 years.
Aotearoa Quilters was formed in 1994

The Creative FIBRE
National Exhibition
A fabulous display of all things fibre craft awaits visitors to
the Craft & Quilt Fair. Creative Fibre brings together spinners,
weavers, knitters, dyers, flax workers, felters, crocheters, as well
as free-form fibre artists from across New Zealand to share ideas
and inspiration.
Be prepared to leave all your preconceptions
about fibre work at the door, and let
yourself to be amazed by the creativity and
workmanship in all the aspects of spinning,
weaving, felting, knitting and fibre art you
could imagine.
Experience the best pieces produced by Creative Fibre
society members – who now number over 3000 – all dreamed
up exclusively for this national exhibition. Work by one of
the organisation’s selectors, Jane Siddall, who is a talented
embroiderer, will also be on display.
Creative Fibre would like to welcome its new sponsors and also
thank their regular sponsors’ continued support for this event.
This year Expertise Events has sponsored an award called
‘Let’s Go Green’ – this has prompted a high degree of interest
amongst Creative Fibre members as they contemplate all the
meanings of ‘Green’ aside from colour. A huge variety of
entries are set to intrigue and astound visitors at the fair.
The Waikato Creative Fibre Guild stand is located in the
main hall and here, you can learn to spin, see weaving
in progress and have a go at felting, as well as get
information about the organisation and chat with current
members about workshops, classes, clubs
and fibre suppliers.

New AP&Q AQC Challenge
quilts on display
‘Seeing is believing’ when the 30
finalists in the third annual AP&Q AQC
Challenge were revealed this year.
The intriguing theme of the Seven Deadly Sins was guaranteed to
provide participants with ample inspiration and consequently, the
results were eagerly anticipated.
‘Deadly’ or ‘sinful’ are hardly adjectives normally associated with
quilts, but such an evocative theme is what makes the display of
challenge entries all the more compelling.

Presented by ANZEG
The vibrant colours and music evoked by the theme ‘Ode to
the Blues’ have formed the inspiration for an exciting array of
embroideries featured in this year’s display by members of the
Association of NZ Embroiderers’ Guilds. These embroideries
were created as part of the inaugural Bernina Postbag Colour
Challenge where each piece produced had to fit into an A3
or A4 postbag.
The display will also feature a range of beautiful work created
by embroiderers from 60 guilds around New Zealand.
The results of a new colour challenge will also be exhibited at the
Fair and you can vote for your favourite piece of embroidery
on display. Keen young stitchers can join in free children’s
workshops on Saturday and Sunday. They will have
the opportunity to complete a fun, simple project
to take home. Seasoned stitchers will also be
demonstrating a range of techniques as well as
providing advice to visitors.
Come along and meet guild members at
the fair to find out more.
