Dear Craft Fair Friends,
This will be our 15th Canberra
Craft & Quilt Fair – thank
you Canberra craft lovers for
welcoming us back each year.
This year the fair has inspiration-plus
in the form of talented guest artists and
spectacular displays. As we travel around
Australia, Teresa Dair has captured the media’s
attention with her arm knitting – it’s
actually a simple technique which
needs no tools at all – your arms are
used as needles! The great-looking
result will amaze you.
Rachel Greig, creator of beautiful
stamps, will demonstrate how
to use them to make cards, gift
tags, scrapbook pages and even Rachel Gre
ig, sta
mping
stamp out your own fabric patterns.
And of course there will be magnificent quilts on show. As well
as the Annual Exhibition by Canberra Quilters, we are bringing
the AP&Q AQC Challenge quilts which have the theme of the
Seven Deadly Sins – don’t miss these thought-provoking pieces.
We also welcome the return of our original sponsor – The
Australian Women’s Weekly. Inside this preview you will find a
very special offer from them.
See you there,
Be Early – You Could Win!
Each morning of the fair at 9.50am, we hold a little warmup dance with our exhibitors. We invite you to join in – it’s
fun and you could win some great
prize packs from the team at
Blue Willow Cottage, who
design lovely patterns
and kits for all skill levels.
They also stock fantastic
products that make your
craft and patchwork
easier and more efficient.
Meet Blue Willow Cottage
at Stand C07.

About the FAIR
Tips to help
plan your day
• Pass-out stamps are
available at the door for
re-entry on the same day.
• Cloakroom charge is
$1 per item. Leave your
coats, bags, umbrellas
and heavy shopping!
We recommend leaving
trolley bags here, too,
as people can trip over
them in a crowd.
• Food and drinks
will be available at the
venue cafes.
• The venue is
accessible by
wheelchairs and prams.
• Respect copyright:
craft designers make
their living from the
sale of their ideas and

Add your craft tip to the
Tree of Knowledge
at the Craft & Quilt Fair!
Do you have a tip
– or two – about
any craft you’d like
to share?
If so, you can add them
to the Tree of Knowledge
at the Craft & Quilt Fair.
Simply go to the website at
www.craftfair.com.au and
print one of these shapes – a
flower, a leaf or a bird. Then cut
it out and write your tip on it.
After that you just colour it in
and decorate it or embellish it
any way you like, and bring it
along to the Craft & Quilt Fair.
Finally, attach your tip to the
Tree of Knowledge on display
at the Craft & Quilt Fair and
share your idea with thousands
of other visitors.
But that’s not all – if your tip is
judged to be among the top
101 of those received, it could
be published in a book in 2012,
called 101 Tips for Craft!*
Craft!*
*By adding this tip to the Tree of Knowledge at a Craft & Quilt Fair, you warrant
the material is the author’s original work and if reproduced or published by
Expertise Events Pty Ltd, there are no payments or royalties due to the author
at any time.

2011 MEMBERS’ EXHIBITION
With a wide range of categories to
cover styles and skill levels, this
year’s Members’ Challenge offers
visitors plenty of variety.
Out of the Canberra Quilters’ membership of over 350, around
200 entries are expected and the Challenge theme is ‘Home’,
relating to the fact that the guild recently moved into permanent
premises – affectionately dubbed a ‘Home of Our Own’ (aka
‘Hooo’!). The 2011 Canberra Quilters Inc Exhibition will be opened
officially by Pam Tawton, a well-known member, at 11am on
Thursday, August 11.
The displays presented for visitors’ enjoyment this year are:
• Challenge Quilts – this year’s theme, ‘Home’, is very
appealing and bound to inspire some impressive and attractive
creations from the talented members of Canberra Quilters Inc.
• Best of Australia Quilts – once again, the eight state finalists
in the Bernina National Quilt Award will be on display together.
• Plus, another regular treat
– the Canberra Quilters’
Salesroom will be well
stocked with beautiful
homewares and decorator
items handmade by guild
members for visitors to buy.
Yet again this year,
volunteers from the charity
group, Quilts for Others,
will demonstrate how a quilt is
cut, pieced and put together,
then quilted and bound.
Last year Canberra Quilters’
members were
justly proud of their efforts
to donate more than 200
beautiful examples of their
art to local charities.
‘The Sun and the Rain’ by
Caylin Thompson, aged 8.
Canberra Quilters are also keen to encourage younger stitchers,
and there are two categories for junior members to show their
work. ‘Quilts by Children’ is for quilters up to 12 years old and
‘Quilts by Youth’, for 13-to-17-year-olds. The best quilt from these
categories wins the ‘Bernina Excellence Award for a Junior Quilt
Maker’, which is a sewing machine, and there is also the Allan
Armistead Award for the best junior first-time exhibitor.
Why not come and talk to guild members about the activities
available? They can also tell you how to join them!

New AP&Q AQC Challenge
quilts on display
‘Seeing is believing’ when the 30
finalists in the third annual AP&Q AQC
Challenge were revealed this year.
The intriguing theme of the Seven Deadly Sins was guaranteed to
provide participants with ample inspiration and consequently, the
results were eagerly anticipated.
‘Deadly’ or ‘sinful’ are hardly adjectives normally associated with
quilts, but such an evocative theme is what makes the display of
challenge entries all the more compelling.

See KNITTING with a difference
Knitter extraordinaire
Teresa Dair gives fabrics
some ‘shock-treatment’
– to bring out their
unique style – and she
will be demonstrating her
innovative techniques as
guest artist at the 2011
Craft & Quilt Fair.
The masterpieces Teresa creates are right
at the frontier of fashion. First, she knits
up some wool without needles in what’s
known as ‘arm-knitting’. “You’re using your
arms as the needles – it just makes really
big gaps!” she laughs. To this she adds a
mix of materials such as a tad more wool
plus a bit of acrylic, quite a lot of cotton
and maybe some linen too, and sets about
‘felting’ it.
“Next, I treat it ‘rough’,” she states. “I put it
in really hot water; then I ‘shock’ it with cold
– and then throw it in the washing machine. And, after that I put
it in the dryer, so that what happens then is – it has a major panic
attack! You never get the same effect twice,” she adds, “which is,
of course, what makes it unique.”
Check out arm-knitting for yourself at the Craft & Quilt Fair.

Stamping her
ART OUT
Renowned photographer and papercrafter
Rachel Greig shows just what’s possible
when these skills are combined, as she
demonstrates stamping, card-making and
printing on fabric – as guest artist at the Craft
& Quilt Fair.
Rachel decided very early photography was
for her – and went for it big time. “My first
camera cost me $36 – it was just a little
Kodak 35mm. I was 10 and earned the money helping Mum cook
breakfast for the shearers on the property,” she smiles. “I’ve done
card-making since I was that young too,” she adds. Then, with
photography as the core subject in her Visual Arts degree, she also
got into fibre arts and other areas, like book-making, sculpture and
printmaking – which she loved.
While working as a photographer for an array of magazines, she
began making her stunning work into gift and greeting cards.
She also designed a selection of papercraft products including
‘filmstrips’ and patterned paper – and even rubber stamps – for
card-making and scrapbooking, all of which opened the door to a
whole new creative aspect of her art.
As guest artist at the Craft & Quilt Fair, she will be demonstrating
techniques with rubber stamps and inkpads, and showing different
ways to use them. “I design the stamps and they’re manufactured
here, in Australia,” she explains, “so I’m mainly focusing on those
and card-making. But as it’s a Craft AND Quilt Fair, I want to include
printing on fabric too, which I think would go down really well.”
Rachel’s company, Darkroom Door, manufactures a huge range of
papercraft products which are selling extremely well overseas. As
a result, in 2010, she was chosen to receive The Premier’s Young
Exporter Award by the NSW Government, which is sponsored by
the University of NSW.
