Dear friends,
2015 was a big year for CVT, commemorating 30 years of healing. From our founding in 1985
as the first torture survivor rehabilitation center in the United States, we are now one of the
largest in the world.
Our story has always been one of hope, and because of you, hope is spreading worldwide.
CVT has expanded since our inception with healing centers in the U.S, Ethiopia, Jordan, Kenya
and Uganda. Last year alone, your support made it possible for us to work with 20,963 survivors
and family members on their healing journey.
Additionally, through our policy work in Washington, D.C., tens of thousands of additional torture

survivors benefitted from your generosity. In one example from 2015, CVT conducted a metaanalysis of studies done on torture treatment for refugees in an effort to understand the prevalence
of torture survivors in the U.S. The results were shocking: the torture prevalence rate is nearly three
times previous estimates. CVT believes as many as 1.3 million refugee torture survivors live in the United States. 44%
of refugees in the U.S. are estimated to be survivors of torture. In part as a result of our research, the administration
requested a more than 100% increase in funding for domestic torture survivor rehabilitation.
These findings also underscored the importance of the opening of CVT’s new healing center in Atlanta, Georgia, which
we announced in 2015 for implementation in 2016. We are dedicated to continuing to provide expert care right in the
places where people need us. And with your help, our success with real change can bring us ever-closer to a world
without torture.
It starts with hope. And for every survivor of torture and war atrocities whose hope was restored last year, I am deeply

HOPE FOR SURVIVORS IN THE UNITED STATES
At our St. Paul Healing Center in Minnesota, 1,265 survivors and family members received care from a team of
specialists in torture rehabilitation. The team provides medical treatment and nursing care with referrals to specialists
as needed, and psychotherapy, physical therapy and social services.
Through our Healing Hearts project, designed to address the unmet needs of Karen refugees from Burma,
242 survivors and family members received specialized rehabilitative care at local primary care clinics in Minnesota.
In late 2015, with a grant awarded by the U.S. Office of Refugee Resettlement, the International Rescue Committee
(IRC) and CVT formed a partnership to open a new healing center in Atlanta, Georgia. A hub for refugee resettlement,
Atlanta welcomes large numbers of survivors of torture and war atrocities from Burma, the Congo, Bhutan and Iraq.
This new CVT healing center will enable us to reach survivors almost as soon as they arrive.
In addition to direct healing care, CVT trained 1,478 people in 2015 through our National Capacity Building project
and healthcare provider trainings. CVT is committed to sharing knowledge and experience with others and bringing
together experts in the field so even more torture survivors can receive the care they need.

HOPE FOR SURVIVORS IN ETHIOPIA
Last year, 3,470 Eritrean refugee survivors and family
members received rehabilitative care from CVT
Ethiopia. Most basic needs are provided for in the
refugee camps, but there are virtually no mental
health services. CVT is providing in-depth healing
care for survivors in the Mai-Aini and Adi Harush
camps and training psychiatric professionals in three
refugee camps so that survivors have the access to
care they deserve.
HOPE FOR SURVIVORS IN UGANDA
Working closely with counseling staff at five
organizations in the northern districts of Lira and
Gulu, an experienced CVT psychotherapist rotates
among them to provide intensive, hands-on training
in torture rehabilitation. Last year, 648 survivors and
family members received healing care and more
psychologists and counseling professionals are
gaining practical, clinical experience in the treatment
of survivors suffering from torture or war trauma.

At the world’s largest refugee camp in Dadaab,
home to survivors of torture, targeted violence and
war, CVT’s healing team provided rehabilitative care
for 3,055 survivors and family members in individual
and small group therapy sessions.

HOPE FOR SURVIVORS
IN KENYA
In Nairobi, many refugees living there do not
have refugee status from the UN refugee
agency, which makes it difficult for them to
access needed services and leaves them
extremely vulnerable. CVT provided counseling
and physical therapy to 3,365 survivors and
family members in several neighborhoods
in the city.

HOPE = PREVENTION, PROTECTION,
REHABILITATION AND ACCOUNTABILITY
CVT advocates for policies that prevent torture, protect survivors who are forced to flee their countries,
provide survivors with greater access to rehabilitation, and promote accountability for torture. In 2015,
key accomplishments included:
•Advancing bi-partisan anti-torture legislation that strengthened the U.S. ban on torture.
The McCain-Feinstein Amendment, which places all U.S. government interrogations under
the U.S. Army Field Manual on Interrogations and requires that the International Committee of
the Red Cross have access to all prisoners in U.S. custody, passed Congress with huge
bi-partisan majorities and was signed into law in November 2015.
•Persuading policymakers, government funders and NGO partners that torture survivor
rehabilitative care is a wise investment. Using the torture prevalence estimate derived from
CVT’s meta-analysis of studies of torture survivors, we demonstrated that the number of torture
survivors in the United States is far greater than previously thought and advocated for increasing
U.S. funding for torture survivor rehabilitation.
•Calling on the United States to increase its resettlement of refugees and pushing back on legislation
that would have effectively shut down the resettlement of Syrians and Iraqis to the United States.
Our advocacy efforts included sharing stories of CVT’s Syrian and Iraqi clients in Jordan to remind
policymakers of the human side of the global refugee crisis and the need for durable solutions.

HOPE = NEW PARTNERS AND NEW TACTICS
CVT is committed to actively sharing our knowledge and
30 years of experience with others.
Our international training initiatives develop the ability of
local professionals to provide healing services now and
in the future. Through our Partners in Trauma Healing
project, we work with torture rehabilitation centers
throughout the world to expand their ability to provide
high quality care to survivors and build stable and
sustainable organizations.
Here in the U.S., CVT’s National Capacity Building
project works to advance the science of torture
survivor rehabilitation by promoting integrated care
for survivors and their families across the country. Our
HealTorture.org website is a unique repository for stateof-the-science research, tools, resources and trainings on
evidence-based and promising practices in the field.
CVT’s New Tactics in Human Rights program addresses
human rights problems that require a strategic approach
and a broad range of tactics and collaborations. In
helping human rights defenders work more effectively so
they can achieve their goals, we better address human
rights violations, including torture, around the world.
