I
would like to dedicate the 2016-2017 Directory to
North Carolina District West.
We will be celebrating 100 years of Civitan in 2017. As we
enter into our Centennial year, Duane Capps, International
President 2016-2017 would like to see 100 clubs built. That
is one club per year of Civitan.
It is my wish that North Carolina District West can do its
part in helping Duane reach this goal. I am not going to
specify a number of clubs to be built. “The Sky Is The Limit”.
There are many Areas in our District that are without clubs.
I hope we can work together in adding more clubs to North
Carolina District West. In order to accomplish this goal we
need to Recognize, Recruit and Retain!

THE FOUR CHAPLAINS
The Four Chaplains, also sometimes referred to as the
"Immortal Chaplains" or the "Dorchester Chaplains" were four
United States Army chaplains who gave their lives to save other
civilian and military personnel as the troop ship S.S. Dorchester
sank on February 3, 1943, during World War II. They helped
other soldiers board lifeboats and gave up their own life jackets
when the supply ran out. The chaplains joined arms, said
prayers and sang hymns as they went down with the ship.
The four Chaplains were Father John Washington (Catholic),
Reverend Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed), Rabbi Alexander
Goode (Jewish) and Rev. George Fox (Methodist). These four
Chaplains were later honored by the Congress and Presidents.
They were recognized for their selfless acts of courage, compassion and faith. According to the First Sergeant on the ship, "They
were always together, they carried their faith together."
Civitan Clubs now honor them with Clergy Apprecation Day.

INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH CENTER
The UAB Civitan International Research Center is the
culmination of over 50 years of Civitans helping those
challenged by developmental disabilities. The Civitan International Foundation awarded a grant of up to one million dollars a year for 20 years to The University of
Alabama at Birmingham for the creation of the UAB
Civitan International Research Center, the first institution of its kind in the
United States to be solely dedicated to research of developmental disabilities.
This generous act by Civitans all over the world created a tremendous source of
human, financial, and technical work to focus on the research and treatment of
developmental disabilities.
Through interdisciplinary research, clinical services, and community
programs, the UAB Civitan International Research Center improves the lives of
people at risk for or affected by developmental disabilities. The Center conducts
research on the development of the central nervous system, with special
emphasis on developmental disabilities. The Civitan-Sparks Clinics retain the
same focus, but serves the developmentally disabled through various therapies
and special needs programs. Because the Civitan International Research Center
is a Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Research, Education and
Service, it also provides training for professionals to become leaders in the field of
developmental disability studies.
