By J OY S E W I N G THE GALLERIA I learned how to shop — and ice skate — at the Galleria. Since then, I’ve seen the retail complex grow into a mecca for Houstonians and tourists alike. With nearly 400 stores and its signature ice rink, the Galleria is the largest mall in Texas and the fourth largest in the country, with more than 24 million visitors each year. The flagship of the Simon Mall chain is anchored by Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom and two Macy’s stores. If you feel like splurging, shop the luxury lane near Neimans — Ralph Lauren, Burberry, Prada and Louis Vuitton boutiques beckon. The dining options in the Galleria alone are mind-boggling. Shoppers can enjoy everything from a chicken-salad sandwich in the jungle that is RAINFOREST CAFE to a veal chop at the TONY DEL FRISCO’S DOUBLE EAGLE STEAKHOUSE. Bistro N A fresh Our favorite stop is BISTRO N, which is located berry and fig salad just past the lingerie department on the third floor with goat cheese of NORDSTROM, 5192 Hidalgo, in the Galleria. The inviting bistro recently got a makeover, and its dining room shimmers in coppers, reds and golds. It is both dramatic and dynamic, but still soothing. We wish every restaurant offered such flattering lighting. The lunch menu is what you might expect from a restaurant catering to women: rustic sandwiches, big salads and entrees that offer big flavors but are scaled to lighter appetites. On a recent visit, we tried the Fresh Berry & Fig Salad, which was dotted with spiced almonds and goat cheese, and topped with a fragrant vanilla bean vinaigrette. We were seated at the counter, which wraps around the open kitchen. It was a great spot for regrouping, watching a chef build a pizza from scratch and enjoying a glass of peachy sangria. Syd Kearney SYD KEARNEY / HOUSTON CHRONICLE MIU MIU »Galleria Continued from page G2 assortment of jewelry, candles, handbags, totes, wallets and clutches. The retailer, founded by the late milliner and New Orleans native Henri Bendel, has incorporated its signature brown and white stripes throughout the store. An ornate chandelier adds a romantic ambiance. Miu Miu Level 1, Neiman Marcus Wing, 713-623-7850 Houston-native Solange Knowles (sister to Beyoncé) kicked off the opening of Texas’ first Miu Miu store earlier this year as the celebrity DJ. It was the perfect way for Miu Miu, the sister brand to the Italian fashion house Prada, to open its doors. Miu Miu appeals to the young, cool and affluent shopper, and the store showcases the brand’s fun and flirty clothing, shoes and accessories. Fashion and art come together at BB1 Classic. The two-story boutique features clothes from around the world as well as designs created in conjunction with artist John Ross Palmer. UPTOWN PARK The best way to start off a shopping trip at Uptown Park is with a cupcake from Crave Cupcakes. No sooner had I bought my red-velvet variety, I dropped it on the floor by accident. An employee gave me another without blinking. Here at Uptown Park, customer service is a priority at every turn. This charming retail area, near Loop 610 and Woodway, has nearly 40 places to shop, dine and sip. Store after store, I found friendly sales staffs and a variety of clothing and accessories for every budget, from Mint Baby, Basiques, High Gloss and Lady Elle to M Penner and Lucho. BB1 Classic 1101 Uptown Park Blvd., 713-395-0830 When Calli Saitowitz moved her BB1 Classic boutique from West Gray to Uptown Park, she more than doubled the size of the store and also created a beautiful two-story boutique with room for art displays and fashion shows. The South African-native owns BB1 with her husband, Julian, and operates the store with her sister, Moira Morris. The two scour the world searching for musthave lines, such as Louisa Cerano and Isabel De Pedro. They’ve also launched a line of scarves, Moi Moi, made of tissue-thin silk and cashmere, and have collaborated with Houston artist John Ross Palmer to feature his work on the scarves ($149 each). Carrie Ann 1151 Uptown Park Blvd., 713-492-2666 Carrie Ann Sanders loves clothes and dogs, and her boutique delightfully combines her two loves. The store, which is located just few steps from Crave Cupcakes, offers playful casualwear and pieces great for date night, with Galleria+Uptown Park+ Post Oak Elegant eveningwear, day suits and dresses are at the heart of Elizabeth Anthony Esther Wolf. Owner Julie Phillips Roberts has a discerning eye for style and what women want in occasional dressing. Her store showcases luxurious suits by Roberto Quaglia and separates by Lafayette 148, among others. Roberts, who has served as an image consultant to Miss America and Miss USA contestants, also has a collection of red-carpet gowns from designers such as Carment Marc Valvo and Liancarlo. I wore one of Carmen Marc Valvo’s beautiful black strapless gowns for a charity fashion show and felt like a beauty queen. And that’s the point. Based in Brazil, Lenny e Cia opened its first U.S. store here in 2007. Shoppers will love the pristine, modern space. Company president Ana Silva operates the Houston store, which features some top designers: Jason Wu, Gareth Pugh, Zaha Hadid, among others. I was mesmerized by a pair of Vivienne Westwood/ MELISSA comfy plastic pumps with cherry accents that I had seen on Katy Perry in a photo spread. Lenny e Cia also has oneof-kind luxury handbags and totes. POST OAK AREA The entire Galleria area has become a mecca for shopping. There are many stores and boutiques on streets neighboring Houston’s favorite mall. Take your pick from Dillard’s, Last Call Studio by Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom Rack, Festari for Men, Pickles and Ice Cream Maternity Apparel and Pinto Ranch, to name a few. The boutiques include the massive Retroplis, with two floors of vintage apparel, and Thread, a consignment shop for stylish children’s clothing. Makeup artist Yubi Escalona has a studio offering glam sessions and lessons. The annual White Linen Night in the Heights on 19th Street will be 6-10 p.m. Aug. 4. Shop, sip and browse while celebrating the Heights’ coolness. Go early; it gets crazy crowded. Jubilee 321 W. 19th, 713-869-5885 I don’t remember when I fell in love with Jubilee, which has been around for 17 years, but it’s one of my favorites. Owner Kristal HOME • GLAMOUR • FASHION OPE DAIL N Y Located in the Historic Houston Heights 321 A West 19th Street, Houston, TX 77008 713-869-5885 www.jubileeintheheights.com Kirksey has created a store every grown-up girl can love. It has greeting cards, chandeliers, bath and body gifts, and an upstairs area with artsy-chic refurbished furniture and home décor. The vintage-inspired jewelry is a top seller, with earrings and bracelets from $14 to $30. Yellowbox flip-flops with crystals and beadwork, $48-$54, also are popular. Shop the mix of affordable bohemian clothing in the back. Bold tops and geometric-print dresses in sunny oranges, teals, purples and pinks range from $30 to $80. Replay on 19th Street 373 W. 19th, 713-863-9344 Browsing Replay on 19th Street is a treasure hunt; you’re sure to find something great. I did when I visited the 2,500-squarefoot store in search of an outfit for a disco party. It also has more ’40s and ’50s dresses, coats, blouses and vintage jewelry than I had time to peruse, plus pieces from the ’80s and an assortment of used cowboy boots, vintage shoes and handbags. Don’t be in a hurry: Fabulous finds take time. Customer service can make all the difference. Keris greeted me at the door, cheerful and engaging without being bothersome. The store brimmed with cute things for summer. The shop is part of the Houston-based American Apparel Concepts (not that other American Apparel), which includes Method, Wish and Duo boutiques. It has a young attitude with sundresses for less than $100, tops under $60 and plenty of costume jewelry. Erica Delgardo Jewelry 365 W. 19th, 713-802-1977 Metalsmith and designer Erica Delgardo takes care in creating pieces that customers love forever. She uses copper, brass, sterling silver and gold, as well as beautiful stones. The native Argentinian sells work by other local designers, but her custom pieces win praise. Give her an idea; she’ll create it for you. LUNCH STOP DOWN HOUSE: Burgers and salads dominate the lunch menu at this laid-back coffee house. The kitchen uses locally sourced products for dishes such as the bacon and Texas Peach salad, housemade kim chi burger and shrimp tacos. Breakfast is served daily until 3 p.m., so there’s also chicken and waffles, if that’s your thing. Service can be clunky, but still we love it. 1801 Yale St., 713-864-3696 SALE SUCRE: OK, it hasn’t been open long enough to be an old favorite, but this new French bistro is showing promise.
