Cromby Generating Station is proud to support the Schuylkill Canal Association’s 27th Canal Day Our roots in the community run deep. Over the years our branch network and services have grown, but we still serve as a hometown bank. At Susquehanna, you’re not just a customer; you’re a neighbor. Call or stop in to talk about what we can do for you. Doing what counts. susquehanna.net | 800.311.3182 © 2009 Exelon www.exeloncorp.com Member FDIC 16 1 Welcome to Canal Day — the 27th annual! 'DOH\ 6WRQHDQG &RQFUHWH Thirty years ago, the Schuylkill Canal Park did not exist. It was an overgrown area that was often used as a dump. The government wanted to fill in the canal while area residents wanted it to become a park. Thankfully the Schuylkill Canal Association was created to preserve this section of the canal and prevented its destruction. &XVWRP0DVRQU\ &RQWUDFWRUV Canal Day is SCA’s biggest fundraiser each year and the money generated at this event helps fund the good work of the Association. 6SHFLDOL]LQJLQVWRQHDQGFRQFUHWH FRQVWUXFWLRQ a1DWXUDODQG&XOWXUHG7KLQ 6WRQH9HQHHU a6WRQH3RLQWLQJ a3RXUHG)LQLVKHG&RQFUHWH a6WXFFR Today is a celebration of people and what they can accomplish when they work together. It’s not an individual, giant corporation or government agency running Canal Day. It is the work of a group of volunteers that make this day and place special. a)XOO6WRQH&RQVWUXFWLRQ a&KLPQH\5HSDLU a%ULFN%ORFN a)ODJVWRQHDQG3DYHU3DWLRV :DONZD\V :HRIIHUDIXOOVHUYLFHPDVRQU\FRQVWUXFWLRQDQGJHQHUDOEXLOGLQJ DSSURDFK7KHUHLVQRMREWRRELJRUWRRVPDOODQGZHDOZD\VSXWWKH KDSSLQHVVRIRXUFXVWRPHUDVRXUWRSSULRULW\ )UHH(VWLPDWHDQG 'HVLJQ )XOO\/LFHQVHGDQG,QVXUHG 0HQWLRQWKLVDGIURP&DQDO'D\DQGWDNHDGYDQWDJHRID GLVFRXQW The Schuylkill Canal Association thanks our sponsors, Exelon Power, Cromby Generating Station and Phoenixville Federal Bank & Trust, as well as all those listed on page 5, who have given generously to make this day happen. Their support enables SCA to provide a day full of fun while highlighting the park and all it has to offer. SCA depends on your support too. If you use the park to fish, boat, walk, run or hike, walk your dog, or to enjoy the natural environment, you benefit from the hard work SCA volunteers; including Upper Providence Township and Montgomery County’s Park & Heritage Services, put into maintaining this park. Become a member, support the SCA and get involved by being a part of its preservation and its recreation with all there is to do along the Schuylkill Canal. My thanks and appreciation to all the volunteers and our guests; enjoy Canal Day 2009! Strickland Kneass, Chair, Canal Day 2009 2 15 DEVLIN-ROSMOS-KEPP FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC. It is one of only two remaining watered sections of the Schuylkill Navigation constructed along the river in the early 19th century. And it is the only one that has a fully operational lock within the entire Schuylkill River Valley. SCA depends on the support and generosity of its local community to maintain the area. We welcome new members and are always looking for a helping hand to maintain and operate this beautiful park. I wish to become a member of the Schuylkill Canal Association to support the ongoing operation and maintenance of the canal area as a historic and recreational community asset.
