A Note From the
Executive Director
Thank you for another great year!
Over the last year, COI has added new resources to help
those we serve overcome the challenges in their lives.
We are forging new partnerships within our region, and
focused on addressing the underlying issues that lead to
homelessness. As we complete our 44th year of service
to our community, our mission of helping people help
themselves lead healthy and productive lives continues
to be the focus of our agency.
Kari Whitacre
We continue to help children and families who are facing
homelessness find a safe place to stay while they work
towards stability.
Young adults who have nowhere else to go, regularly
walk through our doors and are provided with shelter,
food, and hope for the future.
Veterans who have served our country live here and use our
resources to forge a new path and change their lives.
In this annual report, you will read about some of the
people that help us do this important work. We are
excited to share their stories with you, and show you
how together we are helping people in Corvallis have a
brighter future.

Supporting Children in Need
At COI a majority of our agency’s resources are dedicated to helping
families with children who are experiencing homelessness. We offer
safe emergency and transitional shelter, food and kitchen facilities, case
management, counseling services, parenting classes, state certified child
care at Mari’s Place, medical and dental clinics, and other assistance
designed to help families in crisis.
Our families are successful (roughly 70% transitioned to permanent
housing last year) because we coordinate with partners throughout our
community. In the last year alone, we served more than 170 children, age
six weeks to 17. The majority of which were enrolled in the Covallis school
district (509J). By working together with the 509J staff and other nonprofits, we provided the best comprehensive and wrap around services
our community has to offer. After all, aren’t children the most vulnerable
homeless population in our community, and aren’t they worth it?

Volunteers Help COI Find
Everyday Successes
Whether you are an intern at our front desk, a volunteer in our medical
clinic, or a board member, you are a key part to COI’s operations. Much
of our volunteer support originates from the dormitories, hallways, and
buildings at Oregon State University.
Fraternities such as Lambda Chi Alpha and Sigma Phi Epsilon work with
their members to fund vital agency programming, volunteer for agency
projects, and raise awareness for our programs. OSU faculty volunteer at
events, serve on our Board of Directors, and provide us with opportunities
to engage their students and educate them about the challenges facing
our clients.
Without volunteer support COI would not be able to do the amazing work
we do for our clients. Our efforts are changing people’s lives, and without
your help, we couldn’t serve the more than 7,000 individuals who seek out
our services every year.
Thank you to our amazing volunteers!

Creating a
Brighter Future
for Children The children served by COI are prone to
emotional, social, and scholastic struggles,
are twice as likely to experience hunger,
and four times as likely to have delayed
development compared to their peers
who have not experienced early childhood
trauma. By providing onsite medical
services and behavioral health counseling,
we support clients with a wide variety of
services that strengthen the entire family.
The work is challenging but with support
from our staff, Corvallis School District staff,
and other community organizations, we
know the CSS will help at risk kids have the
resources they need for a brighter future.

“
Over the past few years we have seen a
dramatic increase in the numbers families
we serve at COI. To meet the need of our
community we have reorganized our
shelter to serve more families, expanded
the emergency family shelter, and added
more services to help families succeed. In
2015, approximately one out of two people
COI sheltered were children under the
age of 18. To further support these efforts
we recently added a new role, the Child
Support Specialist (CSS), to provide case
management for children at COI.

In 2012, COI joined nationwide efforts to end
homelessness amongst veterans by 2015. We
created a veteran support group called Good to Go,
and asked local partners for help.
The Corvallis Elks Club provided funding and
supplies, Good Samaritan Hospital gave free gym
memberships (65 to date) to vets at COI, OSU
brought volunteers, Blue Sun brought employment
opportunities, our local Veteran’s Administration
provided financial resources, and so many more have
chipped in that we can’t fit them all in this article!
Three years later our accomplishments speak for
themselves. The veteran alumni of COI’s programs
are finding gainful employment and are being
housed at some of the highest rates in our region.
In the last six months of 2015 we were able to place
eight out of nine veterans in permanent housing.
Thanks to the help of our partners, we are making
a difference in the lives of veterans throughout our
community!

A Message From the
Development Director
Chris Quaka
Hello and thank you for a great year!
Because of you, COI staff provided the vital services
necessary to help families with children, young adults,
men, women, and veterans achieve stability in their lives.
Your financial support is a key part of our funding and
provides more than half of our agency’s annual revenue
(less gift in kind services). Thanks to the strong support of
donors like you, we had a solid fundraising year – raising
$692,625 from 889 donors last year. continued…
AGENCY SUPPORTIVE SERVICES
9,490 calls to our 24 hour Crisis and
Referral Hotline
1,680 Hours of Case Management
$7,449 dollars raised through HandUp for
direct client assistance
…continued
These charitable dollars provided the resources for COI to:
Impact the lives of more than 350 people who were experiencing
homelessness,
Create more than 13,000 meals for children who were living in our
shelter last year,
Serve 2,052 through our medical and dental clinics who still face
barriers to receiving health care.
All told, Community Outreach served more than 7,000 people
through our 14 supportive programs last year, and we couldn’t have
done it without the support of our community!
Today, our clients still need your help. So far this
year (July 1- December 31st 2015), we have raised
approximately $594,000 leaving $98,000 to raise to make
our goal before June 30th. This represents gifts from
660 donors, for which we are very grateful. If you have
not yet made a contribution, we hope that you will take
a moment to make your gift or pledge in the enclosed
envelope. Your gift WILL make a difference.
Thank you again for your support!
We look forward to seeing you in the community, and
hearing from you in the future!
Sincerely,
