March was an exceptionally quiet month witltin the
Executive Commitlcc of NTCA. 11tis is not a
complaint but merely an observation on my part. l am
hoping that this is a sign tltat tltings are begimung to
nonnalize as far as official club matters arc
concerned.
Our Committee did get an opportunity to discuss an
item that I brought up in my column last month
concerning an offer tltat several members ltad
expressed an interest in. It was suggested by more
than one member that we should t:ry offering l~<'llf
price rates to members wislting to nm fixed price
token sales within tltc pages of Talkin' Tokens. The
idea behind tlUs was that it would be a financially
solvent means for members to sell off or buy up some
of tltose lesser value or more common tokens tltat we
all inevitably end up witlt when we're searching out
pieces for our respective collections. The general
consensus among the Executive Committee seems to
be that tltis is indeed a good idea and that it would be
well wonh giving the idea a try. However, we also
decided tltat it would be prudent if we waited until
our current BOGO offer ran its course and expired
before implementing any new offers such as
described above. We are still not quite certain as to
what kind of financial impact tlte BOGO offer will
have on the club. The BOGO offer begins in this
issue and will apply to all mail bid auctions that arc
nm between now and tl1e July issue. The BOGO
offers a considerable savings to our members and
many among tlte Executive Comminee feel th.nt
NTCA may take a fmancial hit on this one. 11te ntain
idea behind the BOGO offer is to generate more
interest in our publicmion and hopefully draw in new
members to our club. lf we could accomplish this, the
BOGO offer will have proved worthwhile even if at a
moderate fi nancial loss. So for now we will keep tbc
idea of reduced rates for fi'l:ed price token sales alive

but we may have to wait a few montlts before pursuing the
idea further.
Thus far I am unaware of any nominations iliat may have
been submitted for our upcoming elections other tltan !lte
nomination t11at l submitted last month. 11tis montJt I
determined to nominate Jim Vrba to nm for a position on
tltc Board of Directors for NTCA. Jim stepped up to serve
our club at crucial point in time when we really needed
him and he is doing an outstanding job. His willingness to
serve nnd participate is very commendable. I was very
pleased to have Jim ncccptthc nomination. I would also be
very ple.'lscd to see him elected to serve a fu ll tenn on the
Board. I urge all of you to think it over <:.:'lrefully and to
nominate someone that you think could be an asset serving
NTCA. 11tis democratic process allows you all to have a
say in who will govern NTCA in the future. Please take
advantage of your opportunity in tl1is process.
I want to remind everyone that Duane Feiscl continues to
accept consignments for tl1e auction that will be held at our
annual show in Omaha. It 's a great opportunity to get top
dollar for some of the bener tokens you ' vc been holding
on to. Plc.'lsc cons ider consig1ting n token or two and help
us to insure a successful auction for all parties involved.

I don' t tltink it ltas been said yet so I'll be first to tell Clnrk
Roluner how appreciative l nm for nllthe work he has been
doing on the NTCA member e-mail database. It was a

It was a job that sorely needed to be done and I thank
Clark for doing it. As NTCA members we can all help
keep the database updated by remembering to infonn
Clark when we make changes in our contact inforntation.
I really enjoy getting e-n1.1il from the members of NTCA. I
thank all of you 1l1at have been taking the time to write and
convey your feelings. opinions and advice. It keeps me
feeling connected to lhe membership when I hear from

BOGO
BOGO is a common retail abbreviation for a Buy One Get
One Free sale. The Executive Committee ofNTCA has
decided to have such a sale for mail bid sale
advertisements run in Talkin' Tokens. The goal is to
increase the number ofNTCA members who regularly
submit ads to our monthly publication. Hopefully, those
who take advantage of this sale will be encouraged to
write regular ads once the sale is complete.
During the months of April, May, June and July of this
year each full page mail bid sale ad submitted at full price
will receive credit for a second ad of the same size free.
Run a full page ad, get a full page ad free. Run a two
page ad, get two pages free, etc.
The only restrictions are: (1) Applies to full page mail bid
sale ads only. (2) Only one ad per month qualifies. (3)
Free ads cannot be run in the same month as the paid ad.
(4) Free ads must be used no later than the November
2007 (October 15 deadline) issue of Talkin' Tokens.
So, get busy now and write an ad. This effort is designed
to stimulate renewed interest in Talkin' Tokens and since
it will likely cause Talkin' Tokens to run at a loss, it may
not be offered again.

J.E. Barrow: Post Trader
Fort Union, New Mexico

The business endeavors of John E. Barrow at Fort Union are complex to say the least, and
somewhat hard to follow. Barrow certainly became acquainted with some of the harsh realities of corruption
in business, and at a tremendous expense to himself. I've attempted to explain his story as clearly as
possible, but I admit it is still a little confusing.
Having previously operated his business in Missouri, Barrow began trading in New Mexico around
1861 , although he had no permanent business establishment there at that time. In 1867, he brought a
shipment of goods with him to New Mexico, the value of which was in excess of $37,000, and which he kept
in storage at Las Vegas. An Army regulation of August 22, 1867 allowed for multiple post traders at frontier
military posts; upon teaming of this, Barrow began his attempt to obtain his trading license for Fort Union,
New Mexico. Located on the Santa Fe Trail, Fort Union was one of the largest and most important military
posts and supply depots in the entire western United States.
Barrow then traveled to St. Louis in order to try to receive an appointment as Post Trader. Barrow, in
explaining his difficulty in obtaining the license , rema rked, "Mr. Moore, who was then trader out there, had
been there for twenty years. He had a great deal of influence with the military, and I knew that there were a
great many persons who had tried to get the appointment and who had not succeeded."
Upon arrival in St. Louis, Barrow visited with a Mr. Thomas, who was at that time employed as a
Quartermaster, and spoke with Thomas in regards to him enacting his influence to aide Barrow in receiving
the appointment at Fort Union. After failing to convince Mr. Thomas to help him, Barrow turned to William
D.W . Bernard, who was a close friend of Ulysses S. Grant. Upon meeting Bernard, Barrow was asked to
submit to him a written application for an appointment as Post Trader, after which Bernard agreed to forward
the letter to Grant, along with his own personal letter of recommendation. This was done under the
agreement between Barrow and Bernard that, in exchange for Bernard exercising his influence over General
Grant, one-third of Barrow's profits would go to Bernard, thus making him a partner in the company.
Having put in his application through Bernard, Barrow left St. Louis and headed back to New Mexico,
not waiting to hear if he had been officially appointed. On December 5, 1867, the authorization was issued
for Barrow's appointment as Post Trader at Fort Union , which officially took effect on January 1, 1868.
Immediately upon his return from St. Louis, Barrow began building his new store, which was finished by
February 1868 at a cost of $7000. The $37,000 worth of goods he had in storage at Las Vegas were used to
stock the newly constructed store.
William H. Moore had been Post Trader at Ft. Union for many years prior to the arrival of Barrow, but
he did not shut down when Barrow's store was built. Instead, the two Post Traders provided competition for
each other, and the financial effects were felt by both. Because Moore had been there for so long , Barrow
was forced to sell his goods for a substantially lesser profit than his competitor in order to stay in business.
Barrow ordered several shipments of goods from back east, which totaled nearly $60,000 in value, doubling
his initial stock of merchandise. He was slow to earn any profit, however, because of the low prices at which
he was forced to sell.
Inside the store, which was located adjacent to that of William Moore, Barrow established the
"Billiard Saloon." On September 25, 1868, Colonel Wm. N. G rier, commanding officer at Fort Union , issued
an order to Barrow directing him to cease the sale of liquor to enlisted men at his saloon (of course, the sale
to officers was still permitted). Grier noted that the effects of the alcohol obtained at Barrow's saloon "kept
men in the guard house away from duty." This order was only temporary, however, as the liquor distribution
at the Billiard Saloon started up again soon thereafter. One army officer, making a general comment on the
practices of nearly all post traders, said, ·Their chief business is to sell intoxicating liquors to the
troops ... they get rich in a short time ... and their occupation is dignified by the guarantee and protection of the
Government!"
In May 1868, William Bernard (still acting as a silent partner in the business) moved from St. Louis to
Fort Union, and in the process collected his share of the profits and even resided there for a period of time.

Only five months later, in October 1868, Barrow received notice that his trading permit at Fort Union had
been revoked and that William Bernard had been appointed to take over the business. Bernard made
arrangements to purchase the remaining merchandise from Barrow, who at that time was in St. Louis for
buying goods for the trading establishment. Bernard had apparently used his influence with General Grant in
order to obtain the Post Trader appointment for himself, rather than continue in the partnership with Barrow.
Barrow, after receiving news of all of this, immediately departed St. Louis and returned to Fort Union
and brought with him John C. Dent, a relative of William Bernard . On December 91h Barrow and Dent entered
into a written agreement in which the store and the goods contained within were all sold to Dent rather than
Bernard. Within one month, Bernard made a public announcement in a Santa Fe newspaper that he had
terminated his partnership with Barrow (in truth, it had happened exactly the opposite). However, Bernard
continued to operate the Post Trader store using the name of "J.E. Barrow & Company," despite the fact that
Barrow was no longer associated with the business and Bernard himself was not the legal owner of the store
(although he did possess the legal appointment as Post Trader at Ft. Union). Legally, the store and its'
merchandise now belonged to John C. Dent, who had returned with Barrow to St. Louis during this time,
leaving Bernard to run the store.
The written agreement between Barrow and Dent apparently was never signed by both parties, and
sometime early in 1869, Dent decided to opt out of the agreement, which was not legally binding. Realizing
that Dent was no longer planning to purchase the store from him under the previously negotiated terms, and
having no other choice but to sell for whatever price he could obtain, Barrow was forced to sell everything at
a great loss, which amounted to nearty $50,000 and effectively brought about his financial ruin. Eventually,
Dent did in fact return to Fort Union, where, in September 1869, he was issued his own appointment as Post
Trader there. He and Bernard began a partnership in the business, although Dent at this time was sole
owner of the store and everything contained within. A short time later, Bernard left to St. Louis permanently,
leaving Dent as the sole proprietor and operator of the Post Trader store at Fort Union.
It is interesting to note that the store continued to operate under the name "J.E. Barrow & Company·
late into 1869, a lengthy period after Barrow's involvement with the business had been terminated. Bernard
and Dent evidently utilized the name to their own benefit during this period.
John E. Barrow's stead as Post Trader at Fort Union was a very short one, lasting for only about one
year, and leading only to his own financial demise. He apparently began anew in Utah following his failure as
Post Trader at Fort Union, one that was brought about not so much by his own doing, but primarily by a
scheming business partner seeking his own success at the expense of Barrow. Post Traders came and went
quite often at Fort Union; Barrow's stay probably being the shortest among all of them.
The J.E. Barrow shell-card from Fort Union is among the most desirable and valuable New Mexico tokens.
There are, to date, three of these known to exist, two of which are non-dug, and the third was found some
twenty-five years ago by a metal detectorist at a Jicarilla Apache camp near Taos, New Mexico.

SOUTH DAKOTA SALOON - KEEPER TOKENS

The word Saloon appears on only 24 currently-known, pre-prohibition tokens from 22
establishments in South Dakota; other types of memorabilia (mirror, pin back, encased cent and
match safe) are known from four additional saloons.' The proprietor's name appears on 15
tokens (8 have both town and state, 2 have only a town name, and I has only the saloon name).
Saloon tokens with neither town, state, nor proprietor's name are difficult to attribute. For
example, NARROW I GAGE I SALOON II GF I 50 I IT (and also 2 Yl¢) have been attributed to
Terraville, S. D? However, one could make a strong case that these tokens were used at Victor,
Colorado, based on occurrence of another token: NARROW GAGE I GOOD I FOR ONE I
DRINK I VICTOR, COLO. II uniface 3 In the absence of additional information, the attribution
to Victor, Colorado, is more substantial in my opinion, and these two tokens are not included in
the numbers above.
Business directori es printed by Bradstreet and R. G. Dun list the proprietor's name but
not the saloon name. For example, M. C. Bradshaw is listed as a saloon keeper at Ft. Pierre,4 but
the name of the establishment (The Elk Horn Saloon), as named on an advertising mirror,1 does
not appear in the directory. Thus, tokens bearing the word Saloon, but no proprietor name, can
generally be attributed to South Dakota only when the town name also appears (e.g. GOLDEN
LINK SALOON I PIERRE IS. D.). 1
The number of South Dakota saloon keepers who used tokens was much greater than the
22 currently listed. Several tokens with only a saloon name (no town, state, or proprietor name)
no doubt exist but are di fficult to attribute. A much larger number of tokens used by saloon
keepers have a proprietor's name but the word Saloon does not appear on them. I compiled a list
of South Dakota saloon keepers for 1904 4 and 1914. s By cross referencing proprietors' names on
tokens (in my personal collection and those listed by Erickson 1 and Miedema 2) with names of
saloon keepers in these two directories, I found 11 2 tokens from 69 saloons in 52 towns.
However, the word Saloon appears on only five.

Effects ofthe prohibition movement were evident between 1904 and 1914. The
population of South Dakota increased by 182,000 between the 1900 and 191 0 censuses and by
another 52,000 by 1920, yet t he number of saloons decreased by 42% over the 10-year period
1904-19 14. Only 6% of saloon keepers who were operating in 1904 were still operati ng saloons
in 1914 and another 3% were engaged in some other type of business.
Fifteen tokens with both a proprietor's name and the word Saloon were known in 2006, 1
but only four names appeared in directories from 1904 and 19 14. lfthe ratio between tokens
bearing the word Saloon and tokens used by saloon keepers that have only the proprietor's name
was about the same in all years, as many as 300 additional tokens used by saloon keepers might
be identified by examining directories from other years.

2. Material not considered especially suitable for my
auctions includes paper items, badges., medals, fair
and exposition material, so-called dollars, Civil
War cents, elongated coins, table medals, material
from foreign countries other than Canada and Latin
America, and love tokens or engraved coins. Other
auction specialists probably can do better justice to
this t c of material.
Material should be of a quality that it can he
expected to sell for S l 0 or more p er lot.
4. TI1e c utoiT date for submission of consignments will
be announced for each planned auction to a llow
sufficient time to prepare a heavily illustrated and
fully detailed auction listing. The auction sale
listings ordinarily will be published in Talkin·
Tokem, the officio! publication of the Nationnl
Token Collectors Association (NTCA). Rather than
waiting for Lhe cutoiT date, earlier consi1:,>nmcnt is
urged to allow time for organi7..ation or the material
and preparation of a detailed and informative
auction list. A consignor will be provided with nn
advanced copy listing his/her material to allow for
amendment before the final listing is completed.
Early consignm ent will a lso allow more time to
better advertise and promote the auction.
5. TI1e consignor is expected to provide an Estimntcd
Value (using the NT CA EV scale) or a Minimum
Bid to each lot as an aid to potential bidders.

7. When an auction involves a fl oor bidd ing process,

As a consequence, for future sales I p lan on
instituting a revised policy. Right now I am thinking
of closing new b ids as of noon on Saturday. and
then allowing chec king of bid status for previously
submilted bids up un til SPM on Su nday. or until
there are no con tacts for 15 m inutes. with an
absolute cut-off time o f 11PM. 1 m ay a lso need to
limlt the number of lots on which inquiry can be
made - some of the inquiries. because of l he great

prospective bidders. Also, the availability of the
sale list on my web space was wall received.

In last montlt's commentary, I mentioned some Civil
War tokens I had seen seU in a major coin auction that
crossed the $10,000.00 level. Well, one of them
appeared on eBay tltis month and did not sell. I am
reasonably certain it is tl1e same piece as tlle images
looked identical to what J bad seen in tlte prior month
sale. Titerc can't be too many of tltese around. In tlte
Superior sale, I believe the final price was
approximately $14,000.00 or so. The example offered
on eBay had a starting price of $ 16,000.00. Not a big
markup, but you really have to wonder what someone
has in mind to pay that kind of price for an item and
then immediately re-offer it in another venue and hope
to make any kind of profit. I really have to wonder if
something else was going on here and if anyone has any
information about tJtis, would be pleased to be
enlightened.

reserve) found a good home in a negotiated sale. It
went to a man who makes tlte Ingle tokens a specialty
and is trying to collect one of each Ingle token issued.

why not get in touch witlt him. I mention tltis because
another example of this machine was offered iliis month
on eBay. Titis one also did not meet the seller's reserve
price. I guess there is a limit to the number of folks who
want the ultinlate collectible to go with their token
collection.

token that 1 have ever seen. Jr was followed by a Durfee

same condition that sold for $609.99 and a $ 1.00
specimen with the charging Indian for $534.99. A lso. a
W. A. Carter, Post Trader token from Fort Bridger sold

caraloged as being from San Francisco, Califo rnia, bur
has also been Latin American token. No evidence for
either nflribution has been produced as Jar as 1 know. A
French-Swiss company that may be a descendent ofthe
one on the token (and that dates to the 1500's) still
exists. There were French 'Cere/as' or clubs in San
Francisco during the proper period. The U. S. s~yle
denomination on this token is n ot normally found on
Latin American tokens other than for some ofthe
English speaking countries or rhe Mexican border
towns. Needs someone to provide more research and I
sure would like to hear ofany info rmation rhat any
reader might hm1e or find.

the town ofCameron ceased existence in 1913. The
Cameron Dairy is registered in the nearby location of

medical staffs of VA Medical Centers
nationwide in the rehabilitation and
treatment of disables, handicapped,
homebound, shut-in and outpatient
