THE ALABAMA BEEMER - BMW Motorcycle Owners of Alabama
THE ALABAMA BEEMER Newsletter of the BMW Motorcycle Owners of Alabama BMWMOA Chapter #5/ BMWRA Chapter #107 Volume XXXVII Issue 8 THINGS AND STUFF Connie Reaves Next month at Blue Ridge is going to be awesome ! Make your plans to attend this meeting now ! Phillip wants everyone to remember that this will be Labor Day weekend so plan to stay over Sunday night and go home on Monday. If you have a cabin booked he would love for you to call and extend your stay through Sunday night. There are several events in Waynesville that weekend. If you want to find out what’s going on to go do, look for a list in an E-news nearer to meeting time. I’m compiling ideas from Dan Thompson and Phillip and Leslie. August 2008 We’ll be looking into getting a discount on some “draggin” gear if webmaster Steve Schuckman continues to show off at meetings by doing “stunt” work. Ya’ shoulda been there. Haha (sorry Steve………not really) It was good to have new members Steve and Laneace Whitley attend. They had gone on the cruise with us in February and was so impressed by the group that they sold their motorcycle and bought a BMW and joined the club. New member Eddie Lindsey also attended and told us a short history of his riding experience. All of them promptly stepped up and took raffle tickets to sell. THANKS !! Now we need to hear from the rest of you on how many books you’d like to try to sell. Don Little is starting off big by getting 10 books ! I’m gonna have to step up my game so as to not let him make me look bad. Phillip will also lead a ride on Sunday since Saturday will be too busy for him to leave the campground for an extended amount John Harper delighted everyone with his sidecar rides. It was nice to have our of time. Leslie is planfounder, John Harper, ning some great meals for us ! attend. He brought his sidecar rig and thrilled Darlene with a ride. His new “Easy Pack Duffel”, available in three sizes, is very well thought out and constructed. What sold me is the easy accessibility to my gear because of its top loading feature and ability to strap it down without having to place tie down straps over the top of the bag. Simply run your tie down straps under the bag and through the lower row of side webbing (there are two rows) to secure it to your bike or stacked on another bag. Now, I have easy access to my rain gear and cooler without having to un-strap a bag or open a pannier. Kermit’s email address is [email protected]. Here also is some info and a link to Helmet Head Cycle Gear. You can order directly from Kermit or from Helmet Head. www.helmetheadcyclegear.com/cgi-bin/eShop/index.cgi?pid=3243&virt_prd_pid=3246 “This bag features a large, zippered opening and provides the necessary, water-resistant storage for your traveling needs. The adjustable strap w/ buckle can be tightened to prevent drooping of the duffel ends when partially full, and loosened to allow full expansion of the duffel when required. You no longer have to fight with getting your tent, Kermit Chairs and the rest of your gear packed. It all fits in nice and neat! Developed and manufactured by Kermit...you know it has to be good!” Features • Large, zippered opening for Easy Load & Unload. • Highly water resistant & breathable 1000 denier Cordura sealed seams. • Splash-proof zipper. • Adjustable top strap. • Side webbing. Yes, these bags are stack able.” 4 HE RIDES A PALE HORSE Red Cloud Nobody wants it to happen but the burden of age creeps upon us as vaguely as nightfall. There is no distinct time that one can say “I have lost the edge” but little by little the motorcycle becomes a stranger, as if it takes on a cruel and pitiless personality with a will to intimidate and embarrass. The once powerful legs of the rider slowly become shaky, with knees that ache from a lifetime of abuse; hawk-like eyes of youth begin to cover over with the milky quality of cataracts; balance gives way to uncertainty; surefootedness is foiled by a single smooth pebble underfoot. The motorcycle seems to sense these slight changes and exploit them at every opportunity. The rider may have a lifetime of experience in motorcycle touring, wearing badges from many rallies. Longtime companions admire the mileage accumulated and the many places visited. Younger riders sit in awe and dream of such accomplishments. But the edge may no longer be quite as sharp as once was. It becomes apparent as the curves are now taken just a little slower, mileage for the day becomes less important, and trips begin to be planned as daylight affairs with night riding excluded. Some riders deny any such waning of spirit and ability but they know…they know it is happening. When do the campfire conversations about smaller, lighter bikes begin to make sense despite our pride and egos? When do we decide that maybe it is okay to trailer the bike to the National Rally that is clear across the country? When do we trade our camping gear for the comforts of motels? When do give in to the ugliness of aging? I, for one, don’t know but I am sure it all is coming; however, I am also absolutely certain that for a while we will continue to ride like there is no tomorrow, and when we meet up with our brethren at the campgrounds and exchange conversation around the campfire, a subtle smile and nod will be all that is needed to say “I’m still alive and well”! C ontact Jim for info BMWMOAL RIDE/EVENT INFORMATION Lenn Rainwater, Travel Director I thought it would be helpful to set up a classification of the types of rides we do so each rider will know in advance the type of ride to expect. The ride leader will determine the type of ride and everyone will know in advance what to expect. Even though each group will have a different pace, they will all follow the usual group riding guidelines. The 3 classes are Sport-touring, Touring, and Dual-sport. The description of each is: Sport-touring – Mostly riding at a spirited pace with limited stops. Touring – A slower pace well-suited for two-up riding with possibly frequent and longer stops. Dual-sport – Involves off-road riding in addition to street riding with specific bike and tire requirements. Also, some group leaders may elect to limit the number of riders of their group ride. If you are interested in going on a ride that is posted and it is a limited ride, then you will need to contact the ride leader either using the website or by phone or email and reserve your spot. If you commit to a ride and then do not show up, the consequences will be severe! So don’t even think about reserving a spot on a limited ride and then not showing up. Please check the Happenings Forum on the website frequently. This will be the only source for information about rides. I will try to keep things updated but feel free to post up a ride any time, stating the time and place for the ride meeting, type of ride (sport-touring, touring, dual-sport), destination, and approximate length. BEER, BRATS AND BEEMERS Lenn Rainwater Jim and Sheila Kalahan and Steve and Suzanne Hebert are hosting this event October 10-12 at the Kalahan homeplace in Enterprise, AL. On Friday, we will leave from Jim’s house at 1 pm and ride to Ft. Rucker to watch the helicopters exhibit their aerial gunnery. Afterwards, Jim will lead us on a tour around the range and back to the house for some relaxation around the pool and spa. Dinner is a Shrimp Boil around 6:30 with swimming and partying. On Saturday, Jim will have either a ride or tech day and then we will leave from Jim’s house at 1 pm for a private tour of the Army Aviation Museum at Ft. Rucker. Then back to Jim’s house for some more good German beer and brats. Then to top it off, Jim and Sheila will provide breakfast on Sunday morning before we depart. If you are planning to go, you will need to make a reservation with Jim by either calling or emailing him no later than Sept 29. There is no fee for any of the food or beverage but donations will be accepted so be prepared to donate sufficiently. If you are planning to ride your bike on Ft. Rucker, the requirements include wearing something reflective in addition to the usual license, insurance, helmet, long sleeves and boots. As for accommodations, there is one bedroom left at the Kalahan’s and 3 bedrooms at the Heberts (who are about 1 mile away). There is plenty of camping on the lawn at both homes and there is floor space if you just want to bring your sleeping bag. If you want a motel room, let Jim know and he can get a block of rooms at a local motel. 7 PICS FROM TOWN CREEK BEAT THE HEAT Jamie Jackson Tired of the heat and humidity of Dog Days? Escape it all by joining in on the August campout and club meeting at Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground at Cruso, NC. You will find cool temperatures, green grass, burbling river, and good food, all at the campground. If you want even cooler temps, ride south for six miles to the Blue Ridge Parkway and enjoy the most scenic road in the South East. Or if you want to experience a different menu and check out some unique shops, ride north for thirteen miles to Waynesville. Or just sit around and relax by the river at the campground. Because of its location and amenities, Blue Ridge M/C Campground easily becomes a favorite location for camping when visiting the Appalachians. The bath houses have clean, hot showers and coin laundry. Ice, with ice chest rental, and sundry items are available at the Camp Store, but be sure to bring your own beverages. The Snack Shop is open 24 hours a day with vending machines, television, and magazines. The owners are Phillip and Leslie Johnson, long time members of BMWMOAL. In fact, Phillip is a past President of the club. You may contact them at (828)2358350 or email at [email protected] for questions. All cabins were already rented the last time that I talked to Phillip. Hope see you there Aug 30 - 31! 8 BMW MOTORCYCLE OWNERS OF ALABAMA MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION / RENEWAL FORM Date: ________/_________/2008 NEW_____RENEW_____UPDATE_____ Sponsored by _________________________________________ Primary Member:___________________________________________________________________________ DOB:_____________________________ Secondary Member:_________________________________________________________________________ DOB:____________________________ Address:_____________________________________________________________________________________ Apt#____________________________ City:________________________________________________________ State:__________________________ Zip:_____________________________ Home Phone:_____________________________ Work Phone:______________________________ Cell Phone:______________________________ E-Mail: _______________________________________________________________ FAX: __________________________________________________ Year / Model BMW(s) : ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Circle those that apply: MOA Member RA Member Airheads Member Oilheads Member AMA Member Dues are $20.00 per year for primary and $3.00 per year for secondary members. So, its time to get off the couch and go for a day ride, or even better, plan a mini vacation riding tour to some of the excellent motorcycling roads and sites that are right here in our own back yard. You’re Alabama Beemers’ Exploring and Epicurean Society (ABEES) Touring Guide with its addendum (WWW.BMWMOAL.org > ABEES Touring Guide > Addendum) can be a big help with your planning. The Guide lists more than 450 good eateries and interesting places to see within Alabama. The Restaurants & Points of Interest section is organized alphabetically by city. There are also 29 favorite rides and roads listed that are recommended by our fellow club members. The favorite roads and rides are organized by regions of the state and are numbered. Obviously, there are more favorite roads and rides listed in the NE region of Alabama because that is where most of the good motorcycling roads are. This is an excellent destination for a little getaway. There are three great State Parks there: Guntersville, Desoto and Mt. Cheaha. Each of the parks has excellent camping and lodging facilities with good restaurants. Each park is an excellent place for setting up a base to string together many of the wonderful roads in the area and to see some really interesting sites there. With that said, take a look at Rickie Bonner’s favorite run: “Southwest Alabama Eat to Ride or Ride to Eat Run Stockton to Gulf Shores (SW 1). Rickie’s ride would make for an excellent long week-end mini vacation headquarting in the Gulf Coast region. I am thinking Dauphin Island or Gulf Shores with their beautiful beaches and excellent seafood would be a great hub. Everyone is encouraged to participate in our Bogart’s Olympia Riding Jacket Challenge to win the Olympia Riding Jacket that Bryson is donating to the club. Thank you Bryson! All that is required to get a ticket to win is to ride your motorcycle or scooter to 20 or more POIs, favorite roads and rides and club get-togethers, then send your information to Bob Steber at [email protected]. All of the details are explained in the first few pages of your ABEES Touring Guide. Remember, it only takes one ticket to win. If you do not have a Touring Guide, one is always available at our club get-togethers or let Connie, Lenn or I know, and one will be sent to you for $2.00 to cover the cost of postage and envelopes. The Touring Guide is also available on line at WWW.BMWMOAL.org > ABEES Touring Guide. ATTENTION LADY ALABEEMER RIDERS! Terese Stevens At the latest club meeting, club co-founder, John Harper, made mention that 21 years ago there were only 5 Lady Riders: Connie Reaves, Terese Stevens, Susan Galpin, Margaret Hoffman and a lady friend of Harold Crow's. We've come a long way, Baby!! Nowadays, seeing a woman riding her own bike is nothing new, but still inspiring. Ladies, if you are a Rider, please submit your name, number of years riding and definitely a picture of you with your 'steed' to Terese Stevens ([email protected]). We'd like to acknowledge our Lady Riders in an upcoming newsletter and create a collage photo of our Lady AlaBeemers. Deadline would be 8/31 and will be possibly featured in the October newsletter and then on the website. Your participation would be very much appreciated! 10 ABEES POINTS SUBMITTED TO DATE Total Tickets Earned Restaurants and Points of Interest Favorite Roads & Rides Total ABEES Check Offs Total ABEES Tickets Earned Total Bonus Tickets Martin Benson 32.45 269 13 289 14.5 18 Gary Dubois 41.85 206 19 237 11.9 30 Bob Steber 36.95 173 13 199 10.0 27 Angie Dubois 12.80 86 4 96 4.8 8 9.70 66 2 74 3.7 6 10.55 56 8 71 3.6 7 Lenn Rainwater 8.30 53 8 66 3.3 5 Paul McBrayer 7.15 58 2 63 3.2 4 Tom Gilbert 19.90 48 4 58 2.9 17 Steve Schuckman 23.85 43 7 57 2.9 21 David Smith 19.75 24 3 35 1.8 18 Jim Dubick 4.40 23 2 28 1.4 3 Joan Ware 6.25 15 5 25 1.3 5 Paul Orr 2.05 19 1 21 1.1 1 Terry Ware 6.05 11 5 21 1.1 5 Name Vance Harrelson Gary Williams New Entries - 2008 ABEES TOURING GUIDE ADDENDUM Please go to our website (www.BMWMOAL.org) > ABEES TOURING GUIDE > 2008 ADDENDUM for the complete addendum listing and more details.
