Welcome to all of you Buick enthusiasts and hope all of you did something
fun this month, in your Buick.
The 2016 BCA National in Allentown, PA has come and gone. If you can make
it to the August General Meeting on Tuesday the 23rd, we should have a firsthand
report on the event. If not, stories will be in the Shop Rag to read.
Looking forward to the 2017 National that will be held in Brookfield, Wisconsin
on July 5-8th. See your August Buick Bugle for the details and registration form.
September's 1st Saturday Brunch is one week later, on Sept. 10th. We will be
meeting at 8:30 AM at the Arlington Rest Stop (Exit 206) to caravan north to Hwy
20 and have breakfast at The Farmhouse at 9:00 AM. We will then caravan to
Whidbey
Island to the O'Neil's annual ROA picnic. See full details in this issue.
North Cascade Chapter's 7th Annual September tour plans are finalizing and we
hope you can join in the fun. Registration form for the tour is in this issue of the
Shop Rag. There is still time to sign up for the "Rally in the Valley". If you don't
go you won't know how much fun it was. (Deadline to register: Sept. 7th)
We still have many events planned before the summer comes to an end. Check
the schedule and join in the fun.
Happy Trails to you . . .

contribute. Salads, desserts or even snacks to get it all started, are welcome. Drinks (pop
and water) will be provided. It all begins about 11:00 and lunch about noon. The weather
usually is on our side and bring along your chairs for a good time.

Driving north or south on Hwy. 20 (Oak Harbor's main hwy.) turn west onto Zylstra

SEPTEMBER'S 1ST SATURDAY BREAKFAST has changed the date to Sept. 10th to coordinate
with the O'Neil's Annual ROA Picnic. Those wanting to share breakfast on the way to a day
of great food, friends, fun and Buick touring, should meet at the Arlington Rest Area (Exit 206)
on I-5 at 8:30 AM to caravan north and west onto Hwy. 20 to La Conner/Whitney Rd. where
we will have breakfast at The Farmhouse at 9:00 AM. We have reservations for the NCC Buick

potluck meal so bring along something to add to the table. Hope to see you there.

Road to Allentown
Before I get started, this is not a lost script from a Bing Crosby, Dorothy Lamour, Bob Hope movie.
This is about our trip to the BCA 50th Anniversary celebration in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
We left home at 6 AM on the morning of July 20. Because of the hour and wishing to avoid as much
Everett and Seattle traffic as possible, we chose to leave I-5 at Everett and head to Monroe. From
there, we cut over through Duvall and Carnation to North Bend. From there it was clear sailing to
Ellensburg, Yakima and the Tri-Cities. At Pasco, we turned east on SR 124 which took us to Dayton
where we spent the night.
A wrong turn at Lewiston took us through some beautiful countryside to the south through the Idaho Mountains. Thanks to Nancy and her constant attention to her smart phone navigation app, we
eventually arrived back on US12 and back on the road to Missoula. Our tendency was to stay outside of large metropolitan areas.
A long day of driving on Friday July 22 finally got us through
Montana and we bunked in Dickinson, ND. The next morning, 20
miles east of Dickinson, we spotted a large metal sculpture at a
freeway exit. At that same exit, was a sign directing us to the
“Enchanted Highway”. The ”highway” is basically a two lane county
road between Gladstone and Regent. Along this 32 mile stretch
of road is beautiful farm country. But the highlight is a series of
metal sculptures built by local resident Gary Greff. Imagine a 40’
long grasshopper, or outsized deer jumping over an outsized fence.
From there we followed I-94 east and arrived that evening in Alexadria, Minnesota. Somewhere
north of Madison, Wisconsin, I-94 morphs into I-90 which we followed south to Rockford, Illinois,
which was as close to Chicago as we wanted to go. Monday morning found us skillfully (with Nancy’s
help) avoiding Chicago and leading us toward Indiana along I-80.
Once into Ohio, we were introduced to turnpikes. I didn’t much
care for prying my wallet open every time I got off the turnpike. What I did like was the “travel plazas” at regular intervals
along the route. Everything the traveler might need on their
journey – fuel, restroom, snack, coffee, etc. We spent Monday
night just east of Cleveland. By this stage of the journey, I was
just anxious to get to Allentown. On my “bucket list” are the
Studebaker and Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg museums in Indiana
next time we’re back that way. Note to self: don’t go in the
summer. Too hot and humid through the Midwest. (cont. pg.7)

So after a relatively short driving day, we pulled into Allentown and checked into our hotel about
3:30 Tuesday afternoon. It was early enough to motor over to the
show venue, register and grab our goody bag. The next morning,
we took a leisurely self-guided tour of covered bridges near Allentown. In 2-1/2 hours we saw 7 covered bridges and were privileged
to drive across 5 of them. That evening, Jack & Barb Gerstkemper
hosted a BBQ at our hotel. There, we met up with other West
coast BCA members and several members from Australia and New
Zealand.
Thursday, after a quick walk-around at the show field, Nancy &
I headed out toward Lancaster and Amish country. Between
Bird-In-Hand and Intercourse, the area was very commercialized. We finally took a side road which led out to the “real”
Amish community. Real
families in real buggies
on their way to or from
real Amish farms.
On Friday, we spent the bulk of the day at Bulgari’s compound wandering the show field, swap meet and buildings.
One building devoted to Buicks only. Two others with other makes of cars and two restoration shops on site. By
the afternoon, the show field was rapidly filling with cars from all over the country.
We had signed up for a “Farmer’s Market/Candy Factory/Wine Tasting” tour which took us away
from the judging of the cars. No point in us being in the way. Sometime in the afternoon, the
skies opened and dumped a tremendous amount of rain on the venue. So much so that by the time
we got back from our tour at 2:30, the show field was practically deserted.
In all it was a great trip (adventure). On our way west, we did stop in Dearborn, Michigan and visited Greenfield Village (part of the Henry Ford Museum). Next trip through, we’ll see the museum. We also had the pleasure of visiting friends in Williston, North Dakota. It was by far the
longest road trip we have ever taken covering over 7,000 miles. Our ’04 Jeep Grand Cherokee
performed exceptionally well delivering an average 19.2 miles per gallon. Not too shabby for the
old 4.0 liter inline 6…. Bill Schwer

cars—Bill Schwer
One picture is Mr. “B’ driving Harley Earls Buick y-job with the head car designer at Buick , followed by the 1910 Buick Bug. At the time it was declared the fastest car ever made in an American Shop by American workers. The Bug was very loud 4 cylinder 622 CI engine with one foot
long exhaust straight pipes out of the hood. It was a sight to see it go around Mr Bulgari’s track.
It was nice the see Buick’s concept cars, and they run and drive. I think if they built them people
would be excited, just like when Buick took the chance with the 63 Riviera. The blue 34/5 Buick
won an award from Mr. Bulgari, it was one of his favorite cars. The main event / show on Saturday was a great showing of many Buicks we don’t get to see, although the day was cut short by a
severe thunderstorm that rolled in just afternoon and everyone was encouraged to leave and
take cover. - Steve & Kristi
