Bruges, accessible for everyone
Bruges ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERYONE 2 BRUGES ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERYONE Bruges is a city that goes straight to your heart. Medieval mystery, unembarrassed Burgundian and has been a world city for ages. Go and explore the mysterious ‘reien’ (canals), the veins of the city, and immerse yourself in the Golden Age of Bruges. Since centuries, the Bruges canals connect the city to the sea, a guarantee for wealth and prosperity. International tradespeople built Bruges to become one of the largest Hanseatic cities. In the 15th century, the city flourished like never before. Large parts of the medieval patrimony remained almost intact. It is only logical that the entire city centre was recognised as world heritage by the UNESCO. Older tourists, holidaymakers with a temporary or permanent disability or people who need extra comfort or care can visit Bruges without a care in the world. This brochure was written in cooperation with Inter and Visit Bruges. It offers all the necessary information to prepare a trip to Bruges. We created an attractive route with a minimum of obstacles. There are a lot of cobblestones in the centre of Bruges, that is a fact. This walk is largely on cobblestones, but usually they are flat and evenly laid. Rounded cobblestones were avoided to the greatest extent. The handy removable map with descriptions tells you exactly which route you should take to avoid obstacles. Every aspect of an accessible tourist visit to Bruges was mapped out. This brochure provides information about museums and attractions, pubs, restaurants, public toilets and tourist information offices. The numbers on the map refer to more detailed information in the brochure itself. You can also read all about accessible accommodation, care, tools, transport and parking. BRUGES ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERYONE Our information is based on objective expert inspections on the spot. For more detailed information about each building or site, you can view the detailed report on www.toevla.be (available in Dutch only). Some of the locations were added based on tips and good experiences of people with disabilities. We do not claim that all listed initiatives are autonomously wheelchair accessible. We made a selection of the more accessible businesses and facilities in Bruges. On the basis of the descriptions, you can decide for yourself which locations are more or less suitable or which preparations you can make to make it work. 5 VISIT & EXPERIENCE The detailed descriptions show to what degree a certain attraction or parts of the attraction are accessible to visitors with limited mobility. They also indicate which obstacles you can encounter or where you might possibly need a helping hand. If an attraction or museum has amenities for visitors with a visual or learning disability, this is also stated and indicated by means of the following headings: Facilities for visitors with limited mobility Restaurants, cafés and public toilets Using the thumb system for the most important measurement data and the detailed pictures of the adapted toilets you can decide if a cafe, restaurant or toilet is suitable for you. Because of continuous changes in restaurants, cafes and toilets, it is possible that some information may be out of date. We therefore recommend you contact the business before your visit. If you note that a location has been moved, renovated or closed, you can notify this fact to Inter at [email protected] or +32 50 40 73 73. accessible Facilities for visitors with a learning disability accessible with assistance this is an access problem Facilities for people with visual impairments n.a. not applicable Facilities for deaf or hearing impaired persons 6 BRUGES ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERYONE Accommodation and information offices For accommodation and information offices VISITFLANDERS has developed accessibility labelling: The label A+ means that the building is accessible in a comfortable and independent way. The label A means that we consider the building to be basically accessible; that it can be used by most people with limited mobility, but that it is possible that extra effort or a helper is required. The treasury of the cathedral houses paintings by Flemish Primitives like Dirk Bouts and Hugo van der Goes. The nave of the church is easily accessible via a 2 threshold-free entrance along SintSalvatorskerkhof. Sint-Salvatorskathedraal Steenstraat, 8000 Bruges +32 50 33 61 88 www.sintsalvator.be [email protected] Oud Sint-Jan Whoever enters the Old St. John site will certainly admire the tangible presence of the rich history of Bruges. Here was one of Europe’s earliest hospitals. Later, the nineteenth-century St. John’s Hospital was also built here with its large, communal wards. These spaces were restored after the closure of the hospital and are now part of the conference and events centre Old St. John Site. They are particularly suitable for the organisation of meetings and conferences, fairs, events and all kinds of celebrations. The site has several entrances which are not all equally accessible. The access from the Mariastraat is the most accessible. No special parking spaces BRUGES ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERYONE are available. You may need some help to open the door at the main entrance of the event centre and at the slope of the entrance via the Mariastraat. The side entrance to the catering business is perfectly usable. Most areas inside are easily accessible. There are two toilets fitted with grab rails, but the space in the toilet is narrow and the free space next to the toilet bowl is 70 and 73 cm respectively. Oud Sint Jan Mariastraat 38, 8000 Bruges +32 50 47 61 00 www.oudsintjan.be [email protected] 9 3 Sint-Janshospitaal In St. John’s Hospital, worth more than eight centuries of history, pilgrims, travellers and the sick were cared for by sisters and brothers. The medieval wards and the accompanying church and chapel house an impressive collection of archives, art works, medical instruments and six works by Hans Memling. To visit: the Diksmuide attic, the old dormitory and adjacent guardian room and pharmacy. The corridor in which the pharmacy is located can be entered through the herb garden. You can get up to the entrance of the pharmacy and watch from the corridor into the pharmacy, but the pharmacy cannot be entered by wheelchair user due to the two steps. The museum is quite easily accessible for wheelchair users. You may need some help here and there on the somewhat steep slopes or when opening 10 a heavy door. Not all, but most rooms are accessible. 1 hall through a small platform lift, the other rooms by a sufficiently large lift. The buttons on the elevator have relief indications for people with visual impairments. The exhibited material is good to visit for a wheelchair user. In the adapted toilet you may need help because of the narrow space and incorrect placement of the grab rail. The museum has two ‘Plus Cases’ which were developed specifically for children with hearing and visual impairments. That way, they can explore the museum at their own pace. The church displays a valuable art collection: the world-famous ‘Madonna and Child’ by Michelangelo, countless paintings, 13th-century painted sepulchres and the tombs of Mary of Burgundy and Charles the Bold. Good to know: the church is currently still undergoing large-scale restoration works which means the church is only partially accessible and 5 many works of art are protected. The choir was restored in 2015 and the valuable church interior can be admired again in all its splendour. The nave of the church is easily accessible, you could need some help for a slope of 10% in the church. Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk Mariastraat, 8000 Bruges +32 50 44 87 43 www.museabrugge.be [email protected] Stadshallen and Belfort Bruges Belfry and Halls are a protected monument and recognized as world heritage. Bruges’ most important tower stands 83 meters tall and houses a carillon with 47 silver-toned bells. In the reception area, visitors get the chance to learn a lot on the history and function of the Bruges belfry, which is protected as world heritage. Within the Stadshallen you can admire a fantastic collection of world-famous graphic art and sculptures of the famous artist Dalí. Exhibitions and other events also take place here. The access path and yard are made of flat cobblestones. The Garemijnzaal is the easiest to reach and access. The rooms on the first floor are accessible by lift, but help may be needed on some steeper slopes on the route and at the narrower stretch upon exiting the elevator on the first floor. The adapted toilet in the courtyard is easily accessible. The other adapted toilets are too small. In front of the building on the market square you will find a tactile model with information in Braille. Seven historic themed rooms take you back in time to a day in 1435, including through film and special effects. Hear the romantic story of Jacob, an apprentice of Jan van Eyck, and discover the interactive exhibition space with touchscreens, the panoramic view of the Market and the Duvelorium Grand Beer Cafe, the only themed Duvel pub in the world. You get in through an alternative entrance with lift. The story follows a specific route. A wheelchair user has to leave this route at various times in order to take the lift. Historium provides guidance to find your way on the alternative route. With an iPad Mini as a guide you can discover the most fascinating aspects of beer (and that includes trying some). You study the Belgian – and Bruges – beer history, you will get to known various beers and flavours, you will discover the subtleties of the brewing process, ... The kids tour lets children discover the story of the ‘Bear of Bruges’. The museum is 12 flat. The bar, Duvelorium, is accessible, but there are only high tables (96 cm). There is an accessible toilet with the necessary free space and grab rails. Just next to the door handle inside there is little space. The texts in the experience attraction are rather small and not legible for everyone. The audio guide allows you to experience everything in your own language. A loop is provided for the hearing impaired. not wheelchair accessible, but the blind and visually impaired can listen to all the texts on the iPad. In that case, 1 iPad will be provided with 2 headphones for the blind or visually impaired person and his/her companion. The relic of the Holy Blood is stored in the upper church. The completely refurbished treasury with numerous valuable works of art is also worth a visit. The lower church can be reached without crossing any thresholds, but the circulation space at the entrance is limited and the door is quite heavy. Some small areas can be accessed via a steep ramp. There is an elevator to take you to the upper church and treasury (use the 9 speaker to call for someone to help you with the elevator). Some manoeuvring may be required to drive in and out of the elevator. The double doors to the upper church is quite heavy to open. On the first floor there are narrower, but useful passages. In the halls there is sufficient space to circulate. The material exhibited in the treasury is more difficult to see for a wheelchair user. This is the place where the city has been governed for more than 600 years. An absolute must is the Gothic Hall, which is a magnificent work of art with its murals from around 1900 and its vault. The adjacent historic hall with original documents and works of art tells the history of the city council. On the ground floor, a free multimedia exhibition illustrates the evolution of the Burg. BRUGES ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERYONE There are two special parking places on the Burg. The access path consists of flat cobblestones. The entrance, counter and halls of City Hall are easily accessible. A wheelchair user will probably need help at the lift to keep the doors open and operate the buttons (please ask for help at the reception). There is no adapted toilet. Audio guides are available. Stadhuis Burg 12, 8000 Bruges +32 50 44 87 43 www.museabrugge.be [email protected] 13 10 Brugse Vrije From this manor, whose façade dates from 1722-1727, the Bruges countryside was controlled. From 1795 to 1984, this building served as court building. Today it houses, among others, the City Archives and it is the repository of the written memory of the city. The house has an old assize court and a renaissance hall with a 16th century monumental mantelpiece in wood, marble and alabaster made by Lanceloot Blondeel. There are two special parking places on the Burg. The access path consists of flat cobblestones. The entrance is difficult to access. A steep ramp can be placed on the 3 steps. You may need a strong 14 push here. At the reception and counter enough circulation space is provided, but there is no lowered and drive-under part. There is a 15 cm-threshold at the entrance to the reading room. The Renaissance Hall can be reached and is accessible without thresholds. You may need some help to open the double doors. Large print explanations are available in the Renaissance Room. In addition, you also admire neoclassical top notch paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries, master pieces from Flemish expressionism and post-war modern art. At the Guido Gezelleplein, less than 200 meters from the museum, there are two adapted parking spaces. You can avoid the rounded cobblestones of the path through the courtyard and a steep slope by taking side alley Groeninge. It has flat cobblestones. The entrance through the double doors is without thresholds. 12 All rooms are sufficiently large and easily accessible. The slope to the shop is somewhat steeper. All paintings are visible to everyone. All texts in the works are legible for everyone. The space on the route to and inside the adapted toilet is narrow, but usable with assistance or some manoeuvring. A grab rail is provided. The sink is difficult to use. Special guided tours can be requested for persons with visual impairments. It will bring you an irresistible combination of impressive history and warm romance. The Hof Arents, situated along the picturesque canals, creates a unique atmosphere with its tall trees, hidden benches, mysterious artwork and stunning views of the Church of Our Lady and the House of the Lords of Gruuthuse. You can literally see the world pass by here: tourist boats sail by and people walking marvelled on the square while the clop of horse-drawn carriages resounds throughout the day. The Hof Arents can be reached via wide paths in flat cobblestones without having to overcome thresholds. The museum is not accessible. At the entrance there are stairs and the upstairs is only accessible by stairs. This brewery is a family business with a tradition of six generations of brewers since 1856. This is where Bruges’ city beer ‘Brugse Zot’ is brewed, as well as the triple beer Straffe Hendrik. There is little parking in the area, but you can drive right up to the front. Access to courtyard and terrace is wide enough and built in flat cobblestones. This piece of world heritage used to house beguines, emancipated women who were admittedly layman, but still conducted a devout and celibate life. Nowadays, the Beguinage is inhabited by the nuns of the Order of St. Benedict. The Beguine’s House gives a good idea of what daily life was like in the 17th century. Please note that the gates are irrevocably closing at 6.30 pm. Make sure to choose 16 reach the courtyard and reception with the shop of the brewery. The tragic love story of Minna and her beloved Stromberg resulted in a popular legend which tells us that eternal love will befall couples who cross the Minnewater Bridge. It makes Minnewater a very romantic place. Enjoy the surroundings seen from the Minnewater Bridge, one of the benches along the lake or explore the peaceful Minnewater park. The austere Neo-Renaissance façade of this Royal Theatre conceals a palatial foyer and a majestic auditorium. Contemporary dance and theatre performances and concerts are organised here. The building is accessible via a somewhat steep slope through the alternative entrance at the side of the building (Adriaan Willaertstraat). There are special parking spaces in the area. The theatre has designated places on the ground floor equipped for wheelchair access and for the hearing impaired. 17 Stadsschouwburg Vlamingstraat 29, 8000 Bruges +32 50 44 30 60 www.ccbrugge.be [email protected] Choco-Story The chocolate museum submerges its visitors in the history of cacao and chocolate. From the Mayas and the Spanish conquistadores to contemporary connoisseurs. But you can also try something yourself during a workshop or demonstration. Choco-Story offers activities tailored to visitors with specific disabilities. And of course a little tasting is also involved! There is a program for visually impaired and blind people, for deaf and hearing-impaired visitors and for people with a learning or a physical disability. More information and an application form can be found on choco-story-brugge.be/ENG/ workshops.htm. 18 Both groups should mention in advance that they want to use these places. The elevator call buttons are in a corner and on the ground floor the space for the elevator is quite narrow, but usable. Throughout the building you may need help to open the double swinging doors. There is an adapted toilet with grab rails, although the space in the toilet and next to the door is quite narrow. The 15th century building is difficult to access for wheelchair users. At the entrance you have to cover four steps. There is not always enough room to turn and the lift is rather small. There is an adapted toilet with a private section, the people at the desk will be able to inform you. The spaces are narrow, but it can be done. As a tourist in Flanders you can call upon a regional service or independent nurses who operate near your holiday address. Contact a nursing service as quickly as possible so that you can discuss the possibilities and conditions on time. A few big organisations that can help you include: > The Wit-Gele Kruis Kruis (White-Yellow Cross) is a home nursing organization with branches all over Flanders. You can find the contact addresses per province on www.wgk.be (in Dutch). > The Flemish Association for Independent Nurses (VBZV) lists where you can go for home nursing on the website www.verplegingthuis.be (in Dutch). You can contact a nurse directly to discuss your concrete requests. > Home nursing and other forms of care can also be arranged via a local or regional social service or joint venture. Het Vlaams Agentschap Zorg en Gezondheid (Flemish Agency Care and Health) familiarises you with the offerings via this website: www.zorg-en-gezondheid.be (in Dutch). You need mobility aids while on holiday? You need a hospital bed, hoist, scoot mobile, etc. at your holiday address? Then you can obtain your requirements from a local lending service. Some devices, usually lighter items, must be collected; other items can be delivered to and/or installed at your holiday address. In Bruges, you can turn to one of the lending services below. Not all mobility aids are available in every lending service. We advice you to contact them in advance. 56 Thuiszorgwinkel CM (non-members pay an additional fee) Legeweg 154, 8200 Sint-Andries (Bruges) +32 50 32 80 20 www.thuiszorgwinkel.be Medishop (Bond Moyson) (non-members pay an additional fee) Torhoutse Steenweg 221, 8200 Sint-Andries (Bruges) +32 56 23 02 30 [email protected] www.bondmoyson.be BRUGES ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERYONE TRAVELLING TOWARDS FLANDERS By train Eurostar, TGV & Thalys ICE In 1st class on Eurostar, TGV and Thalys, there are one or more locations for wheelchairs. This means you can travel in comfort without having to move out of your wheelchair. These positions are alongside spacious toilets laid out especially for wheelchair passengers. Ask to have one of these locations allocated to you when you make your booking. The sales staff will reserve one for you, subject to availability. So that these facilities can be accessible to everyone, Eurostar, Thalys and TGV provide special rates so that wheelchair passengers and their attendants can travel in first class for a second class fare. ICE trains (Brussels-Cologne-Frankfurt connection) also provide facilities for wheelchair travellers. However, in ICE trains, these are in second class, near special toilet facilities. Facilities and assistance at stations The main international stations comply to high standards of accessibility (elevators, escalators etc...), and offer assistance service on request to facilitate your arrival or departure. TRANSPORT AND PARKING IN FLANDERS Parking 58 Navigate and park Free or paying? Finding somewhere to park is a lot easier using the website (in Dutch) www.navigeerenparkeer.be. This gives you a handy list of the parking spaces reserved for people with a disability. You can search and filter on a map. You can even see the dimensions and a photo of each place so that you know whether it meets all your requirements. If you want to take a regular bus, you must make a reservation one day (24 hours) in advance by phoning the dial-a-bus switchboard. That way you can be sure that your ride is wheelchair accessible. The dial-a-bus service operates on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., on weekends and holidays from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. There is room for one wheelchair user on each dial-a-bus. If you want to reserve a ride on the dial-a-bus in Flanders then you must phone the switchboard at least 2 hours in advance. The bus also includes places reserved for people with reduced mobility. These places are located at the front of the bus near the driver and at the wheelchairaccessible door. They are marked with pictograms.
