Activities Report Carlos Slim Foundation
Principles
•Our approach to solve the social backlog is like the one we have for
entrepreneurial activity. First, identify and find the right solutions. Second,
contribute all the resources required to solve the problem. This approach is
different from the first one; that is, to provide resources and then see how
they are used.
•Modern society is supported in the wellbeing of others and thus the best
investment is to fight poverty.
•Many of the social problems are more effectively taken care of when the
foundations have the support of the companies’ infrastructure.
•Businessmen are temporary managers of wealth. Their function is to manage
it efficiently, create jobs and pay taxes; all of them have an impact on the
economy of its society.
•Use the expertise and entrepreneurial talent to solve society’s problems. We
are used to make important decisions, generate new ideas, solve problems
and take risks.
•Charity helps and attenuates poverty, but does not solve it.
“Poverty is fought with health, education and, above all, employment and more employment”.
- Carlos Slim Helú

Social Responsibility is a fundamental part of Grupo Carso’s strategy and

SOCIAL JUSTICE
The poverty, ignorance and inequality conditions that affect some of the segments
of the population foster that persons accused of committing a misdemeanor, may
not have access to the benefit of being free on bail although they have the right
to it, because they lack the necessary economic resources. In order for people to
obtain a bail, they have to meet the following requirements: they must not have a
criminal record and they have only committed misdemeanors. In addition, with the
support given by Carlos Slim Foundation to the Re-education Therapeutic
Community, there is a special attention program for young offenders between 15
and 18 years old.
The Social Justice program supports its beneficiaries in their reintegration to their
families, to productive activities and to society with new tools for life, through
human development courses and professional psychological help. In this manner,
the objective is to try to avoid that, because they committed misdemeanors,
there would be a big social cost that would impact the person, his or her family
and also society at large, due to the effects caused by family disintegration. A significant number of the beneficiaries of this program are indigenous persons
living in poverty conditions.

Soumaya Museum
The essence of the this Carlos Slim Foundation program is to conserve,
investigate, disseminate, collect and give historic and artistic testimony in order

formation of human beings because it enriches their vision of the world and
their environment.
Carlos Slim Foundation promotes these artistic and cultural activities at
the Soumaya Museum, the Carso History of Mexico Studies Center, as well as
the cultural program held in the Historic Center of Mexico City. In this section
we include the most important data of the Soumaya Museum and of the

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
For Carlos Slim Foundation, Human Development is an essential part
of the growth of individuals and therefore encourages it and facilitates actions
focused on achieving personal wellbeing, with a family and social impact. This
program contributes to constant self-improvement developing values that
forge individuals satisfied with their lives and committed to their work. The
work carried out is based on the altruism of men and women responsible for
their own and others human development, since their philosophy fosters the
personal growth of the persons giving and also of the persons receiving.
“Learn to want to do”, “get persons to feel that they have a place in this life”
and “be able to consider that voluntary work is an exercise of harmony with
oneself”, these are some of the constant expressions of the testimonials of
those that participate in ASUME, TELMEX Social Wellbeing and the TELMEX
Volunteers network, forming with all of them a human team of excellence that,
throughout the entire country, gives its warm aid with experience, efficiency
and on a timely manner.
ASUME, A.C.
The Growth and Development for Mexico Association was created in 1980
and its objective is to contribute to the integral development of persons
through a human development program that motivates them to be in
contact with themselves and thus start a path headed towards constant
improvement, in order to become better persons, enrich the environment in which they lives – their family, the institution where they work, study, etc.–,
and is committed to work for the progress of the country.
All human beings may be perfected, are apt to improve and develop all their natural capacities and skills through a continuous and permanent
process of Personal Growth and Development. ASUME conceives this
growth and development as the full realization of man in eight areas of

FUNDACIÓN DEL CENTRO HISTÓRICO
DE LA CIUDAD DE MÉXICO, A.C.
(Historic Center of Mexico City Foundation)
Was incorporated in 2002 to join the
Revitalization Plan of the Historical Downtown
area, initiative headed by Mr. Carlos Slim Helú.
Since its creation, the Foundation has implemented programs to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of the Historical Downtown
area, that have been translated to the creation of jobs, safety in public spaces, quality health services and a wide cultural offer.
Since it started activities, the Fundación
del Centro Histórico has benefited more than
7’000,000 persons.
CASA VECINA (Neighbor’s house)
Is the cultural space of the Fundación del Centro
Histórico de la Ciudad de México, A.C. It conceives itself as a specialized laboratory in production, mounting and research of contemporary art, not as a traditional exhibition
space. It works based on the “studio” format,
understanding that the mounting of exhibitions is
a continuous experimentation process. Thus, its
objective is not to present finished artistic
products, but rather provide the necessary infrastructure and financing to collaborate with
the investigation of invited artists. The projects
they support become part of the Documentation
Center archive, which also offers bibliography and
specialized magazines. Casa Vecina (Neighbor’s
house) attempts to become an encounter and
dialogue space with several communities based
on its research and link programs, and it is also a
kind entrance to find contemporary art.
At present, the Foundation is working in two strategic zones: the Historical Downtown of the
Cuauhtémoc Borough and “Las Pensiles” in the Miguel Hidalgo Borough. It works with the following
programs: Economic Development, through which crafts workshops are offered to improve
the labor opportunities of youth; Local Communitarian Development, that carries out
interventions in communitarian spaces in order to promote a healthy and free of violence life; Social
Development, that offers psychological and education services; the Cultural Program has two
axes: a) Traditions, Exhibitions and Contests, through which exhibitions are made in public
spaces and events to preserve Mexican traditions, and b) Casa Vecina, space that contributes to
the revitalization of the historic center to promote links between contemporary art and the various
audiences who visit the heart of the city.
In 2011:
The programs of the Historic Center of Mexico City Foundation have benefited more than 11,930 PERSONS
who have improved their quality of life through counseling, outreach or community interventions in
neighborhoods, schools and public places.
A total of 60,384 support services are provided to consolidate the stability of the people served.
806,410 persons took part in various activities that the cultural programs of the Foundation
conducted.

SUPPORT TO SPORTS
Carlos Slim Foundation permanently encourages the on-going practice
of sports at different levels, because asides from the benefits sports activities
have on the health of persons of all ages, they provide the opportunity to young
boys and girls to stay away from addictions such as drugs and alcohol, gangs,
and it also favors family integration.
Carlos Slim Foundation is convinced that sports are a change factor
for society. Sports promote significant life values from early childhood, such
as: team work, fellowship and competitiveness, amongst other. In addition,
through sports, Carlos Slim Foundation encourages the development
and growth of the least favored sectors of our society. With sports tournaments
such as the TELMEX Cup or the “From the Street to the Field with TELMEX”
tournament in which street children participate, children and youth may have a
better perspective for their growth that allows them to foresee more promising
conditions to achieve their objectives in life and grow as persons integrated to
their families and to their environment.
Likewise, with the support of high performance sports programs, Carlos Slim
Foundation fosters an international competitiveness mentality in Mexicans.

Drivers for Road Safety
Every year road accidents claim the lives of 1.3 million people and
leave 50 million people injured around the world; thus, it is one of
the primary concerns in public health.
In Mexico, road accidents are the leading cause of death among
children and young people between the ages of 5 and 29.
Considering that 90% can be prevented, the Drivers for
Road Safety project was created. Developed by the Carlos
Slim Foundation, FIA Mexico and Escudería TELMEX, in
coordination with federal and local authorities, social organizations,
schools and businesses, the project unites the committed efforts
of all sectors of society, striving to create and implement solutions.
The goal of the project is to dramatically reduce these figures,
foster a culture of road safety focused on awareness, evaluation,
implementation of effective measures and monitoring activities.
The professional drivers who are selected, prepared and certified
by FIA Mexico bring this message to youth through schools and
mass media campaigns.
