YES & ASIA PLAY TO A SOLD OUT TOWER THEATRE
By Rob Nagy
On July 28th rock legends “Yes”
and eighties progressive pop band
“Asia” graced the stage of Upper
Darby’s Tower Theatre. “Yes” last hit
the area in the fall of 2008. For Asia
this was their first tour in several
years. Playing to a packed theatre
of forty something’s, Asia, which
included original members Steve
Howe (guitar), John Wetton (bass and
vocals), Geoff Downes (keyboards)
and Carl Palmer, of Emerson, Lake
and Palmer fame, (drums) opened the
show playing an hour long set of all
their classics, which included “Heat
of the Moment”, “Sole Survivor” and
“Don’t Cry”. They also did a moving
rendition of King Crimson’s “Court
of the Crimson King”, Wetton played
with King Crimson for a brief period
of time, as well as the “Buggles” pop
classic “Video Killed the Radio Star”.
Downes wrote and recorded this cult
classic with Yes alumnus Trevor Horn.
It was the first music video to air on
the newly formed MTV back in 1981.
Anchored by the powerful drumming
of Palmer and the impeccable skill
of Howe and Downes, the band was
incredibly tight with Wetton’s voice
sounding stronger than ever. Following a lengthy stage changeover,Yes,
which included Steve Howe (guitar),
Chris Squire (bass), Alan White
(drums), Oliver Wakeman (keyboards)
and Benoit David (vocals), hit the
stage at 9:30 P.M. performing a high
energy set lasting nearly two hours
featuring a number of Yes classics and
a few more obscure songs. Guitarist Steve Howe, a long time member
of Yes and Asia, pulled double duty
playing with both bands. Both Howe
and Squire drew the most attention
from the crowd as there were visibly
many fans that came to not only see
both Yes and Asia but to hear one of
the greatest rock guitarists and bass
players of all time.Vocalist Benoit
David, who has been filling in for the
ailing Jon Anderson,
did an outstanding
job singing with the
passion and precision that very few
performers could
equal. At times,
if you shut your
eyes, you would
think it was Jon
Anderson singing.
Standout songs
included “Yours
Is No Disgrace”,
“Roundabout”,
“Tempus Fugit”,
“I’ve Seen All Good
People”, “And You
and I”, “Owner of a
Lonely Heart” and
for an encore an incredible version of
“Starship Trooper”.
One of the highlights was Howe
taking the stage to
play a ten minute
acoustic solo set
of several of his
infamous guitar instrumentals. While
both bands have
aged there is no
denying they still
have the talent to
captivate an audience, sounding
as great decades
later as they did
when they first
emerged onto
the music scene.

Pike’s Pub, Bar & Family Dining Spot
By Helene
Pike’s Pub is located at 457 Second St. Pike, in Southampton Pa. Don Mc Geary, Owner, and Sue Randall,
Manager, took over this place about 6 years ago and
through diligence and hard work they were able to turn
this place around to what it is today. A family dining spot
and neighborhood hang-out. The bar and restaurant area
are separated so that diners can assure a smoke-free
environment while dining. The simple but comfortable
dining area has booths and tables to accommodate any
size family or just for one. The employees were very
welcoming and friendly.
Pike’s Pub
offers a variety
of food items
from sandwiches
to pizzas, to
pasta dishes to
Filet Mignon and
Home-made
Crab Cakes and
Coconut Shrimp
too all reasonably priced. And
their wings are
awesome. You
can get them
Hot, Mild, Sweet
and Spicy, Garlic,
or BBQ and
they sell a ton
of them! They
have daily lunch
specials, Monday
thru Friday, from
11am to 3pm,
serving items like
Stuffed Tomato
& Tuna Salad
for just $7.25,
Chicken Salad
Melt for just
$6.95 and their
popular French
Dip for $6.95.
They also have
weekly dinner
specials, from
4pm until closing,
which includes
soup or salad
and vegetables.
For example
every Monday
night you get
Prime Rib for
just $10.95 and
every Wednesday
it’s All-U-Can-Eat
Crabs for just
$19.95 and that’s
a great deal!
During my
visit my guest
and I tried this week’s specials. I had the Pan Seared
Filet Mignon, stuffed with Crab Meat. My guest had the
Chicken Breast stuffed with fresh Mozzarella, Roasted
Peppers and Spinach. The sauce was very good and was
made with garlic, white wine and basil infused oil. Both
dishes were beautifully served along with fresh Asparagus,
Baked Potato re-stuffed mashed with sour cream, butter
and chives and grilled Zucchini and Squash sautéed in
garlic, oregano and butter. And our little guy ate up the
Chicken Fingers and French Fries, along with two servings of chocolate milk. Kids meals are only $3.95 and up!
Our Chef tonight was Aaron Randall, who has been in
the business for 22 years. He was filling in for this special
visit- you can meet Pike’s regular Chef Al Smith any other
time for a satisfying meal. Pike’s Pub is open 7 days a
week and has some fun events and daily drink specials in
the bar area too. For more information check out their
ad in this issue of OOT!

Ritchie DeCarlo Teaching
More Than Drum Lessons At Wyld
By John J. Ruppert 8-7-2009 Ask any musician
or anyone in the Philly music scene to mention
great drummers and Ritchie DeCarlo will be
one of the first names mentioned. The same
Ritchie DeCarlo who has dazzled thousands
and thousands of fans over the past 30 years
playing in such talented bands as LeCompt,
Don’t Call Me Francis, Big City as well as
Singer/Songwriters like the great Lauren Hart
The way he takes complete control behind
his drums are what legends are made of. The
sounds and the rhythms that come out of his
kit are enough to make any drummer ask how
is he doing that and can I do that too? The
answer is yes because Ritchie DeCarlo is now
teaching at Wyld Studios. I met him at Mobile
Headquarters, his 24 Track Recording Studio
that caters to bands, Singer/Songwriters as
well as any audio or voice work. to get all the
information on his teachings and philosophies
behind the drums.
“I’ve been teaching for the past 10 years out
of my house. I was at Howard Herbert’s until
that closed. Jay Bruno was the drum teacher
there. I took over the students he had left and
I opened up RDC Music which unfortunately
didn’t make it through this economy. I was able
to hold onto a dozen students and now I’m
renting a room at Wyld Studios which isn’t far
from the old store. I’m there 2 nights a week
Tuesdays and Thursdays. We’re going to expand as more students come there in the fall. I
teach just about everything from Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced, Jazz, Rock. I do however
just teach drum set and snare drum. I don’t
get into Latin or Classical Percussion because
it’s not a field I feel qualified to teach in. My
students range from 8 year olds that want to
start to play drums to somebody who’s been
playing in a band and they just wants to learn
new things. I’ve got Rock drummers that want
to learn Jazz and vice versa. I’ve had students
in High School that needed to learn what they
were doing in High School. I’ve also prepared
students for their College or All City auditions. I mean anything that helps my student
get one step further is what I’m about. I was
able to maintain stability in the music industry
for 30 years so if they wanted to learn things
like how to get into a band, how to keep a
band together, what’s important on stage and
off stage, I can teach that as well. I’ve even
taught students how
to teach
drums
which
some
people
don’t realize there’s
actually a
different
way to go
about playing drums
opposed
to teaching
drums. I’ve
had students that
wanted
to learn
how to
record and
because
I’ve had
years of
experience at my studio or others I can teach
them that too. I remember my first gig I was 12.
We played a block party on Labor Day from
4:30 to 5:30 and I remember I threw up before
we started that’s how nervous I was. The first
paying gig I had was at a retirement home. They
booked us there by mistake. I’ve also played
with Lauren Hart at a bunch of shows. We did
the Today Show and a bunch of Flyers games.
She’s great and I’m glad to hear she’s doing so
well. In addition to teaching I’m currently working on projects at my studio with Chris Gordon
a guitarist who runs The School Of Rock in
Delaware and musicians from a well known local band Purple Reign. I’ve had experience in all
these fields so it’s easy for me to teach them to
anyone who wants to learn.”
If you want your name to be the next one
mentioned or need a great mentor for your
musical career then You Gotta contact Ritchie
DeCarlo today at (856)-261-3303, www.myspace.com/ritchiedecarlo or visit him at Wyld
Studios 8348 State Road Philadelphia, PA

Donny’s Joke Corner
Rumbles
The “loud rumbles” in the
sky that you have been
hearing for the last few
weeks were NOT thunder.
It was Elvis beating he
CRAP out of Michael
Jackson for marrying his
daughter ....
Did you know ??
That the words “race
car” spelled backward says “race car”. That “eat”
is the only word that if you take the 1st letter and
move it to the last, it spells it’s past tense “ate”.
And..................... Have you noticed that if you rearrange the letters in “illegal immigrants,” and add
just a few more letters, it spells out: “Fuck off and
go home you free-loading, benefit grabbing, kid
producing,violent, non-English speaking cocksuckers
and take those hairy faced, sandal wearing, bomb
making, goat fucking, smelly rag head bastards with
you.” How weird is that?
Bradley’s Test Drive
With this whole Cash of Clunkers thing, luxury cars
are soon to be a thing of the past. Bored out of his
mind one day, Bradley decided to take a luxury car
for a test drive, just for the heluva it. The salesman
Scott sat in the back seat describing the car and it’s
options. The seats were of particular interest. Scott
explained that the seats directed warm air up your
butt during the winter, and cool air up your butt
during the summer. “ This must be a Republican car
then.” Bradley said. “Why’s that” the salesman asked.
Bradley explained “Well ... if this was a Democratic
car, the seats would just blow smoke up your ass all
year long ! “
12 Year Old Scotch
A guy walks into the Whiskey Tango, and asks Tony
the bartender for some 12 year old scotch. Tony
thinking this guy is just some tool who wouldn’t know
the difference either way, pours the guy some six year
old stuff and hands it to him. The guy grabs it, takes
a sip and freaks out saying “This isn’t 12 year old
scotch ... this is six year old stuff” Tony is shocked !!
He apologized, got the guy some 12 year old stuff, and
then gets into a pretty deep conversation with the
guy all about scotch and his knowledge of it. Bowie
sitting at the end of the bar and catching what had
just happened proceeded to hand the guy another
Page 29
glass. The guy grabs it, takes a swig, and spits it all over
the bar. “This is PISS” the guy exclaimed !! “I know”
said Bowie, “but how old am I?”
BEER BY SEVEN YEAR OLDS
A handful of 7 year old children were asked ‘What
they thought of beer’. Some interesting responses, but
the last one is especially touching.
‘I think beer must be good. My dad says the more
beer he drinks the prettier my mom gets.’ --Tim, 7
years old
‘Beer makes my dad sleepy and we get to watch what
we want on television when he is asleep, so beer is
nice.’ --Mellanie, 7 years old
‘My Mom and Dad both like beer. My Mom gets
funny when she drinks it and takes her top off at parties, but Dad doesn’t think this is very funny.’ --Grady,
7 years old
‘My Dad gets funny on beer. He is funny. He also wets
his pants sometimes, so he shouldn’t have too much.’
--Sarah, 7 years old
‘My Dad loves beer. The more he drinks, the better
he dances. One time he danced right into the pool.’
--Lilly, 7 years old
‘I don’t like beer very much. Every time Dad drinks it,
he burns the sausages on the barbecue and they taste
disgusting.’ --Ethan, 7 years old
‘I give Dad’s beer to the dog and he goes to sleep.’
--Shirley, 7 years old
‘My Mom drinks beer and she says silly things and
picks on my father. Whenever she drinks beer she
yells at Dad and tells him to go bury his bone down
the street again, but that doesn’t make any sense.’
--Jack, 7 years
Little Joseph
A teacher rewarded her class with Lifesavers. The
children began to identify the flavors by their color:
Red - Cherry - Yellow - Lemon - Green - Lime Orange
Finally the teacher gave them all HONEY Lifesavers.
None of the children could identify the taste. The
teacher said, ‘I will give you all a clue. It’s what your
mother may sometimes call your father.’ Little Joseph
looked up in horror, spit his Lifesaver out and yelled,
“Oh my God! ... They’re ass-holes!”
What’s up gang ?!? Be sure to stop on out for OOT’s
next TV show taping going on this time at the Stadium bars - ALL of them !! Get yourself on TV, and also
online !! I believe we start shooting on the 20th of
August. Check out OOTWEB.com for details. Always

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN
AND THE LEGENDARY
E STREET BAND
TO ALSO HELP CLOSE THE SPECTRUM
WITH DDED SHOWS ON OCTOBER 13-14
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, one of the most
popular acts to ever perform at the Spectrum, will return to
perform two more shows before the building closes on Tuesday,
October 13 and Wednesday, October 14, as part of the final farewell series of concerts to
say “goodbye” to America’s
Showplace, the Spectrum.
Springsteen tickets will go
on sale exclusively through
ComcastTIX on Monday, July
27 at 10am at ComcastTIX.
com, by calling 1-800-2984200, in person at the
Wachovia Complex box office or select Acme Markets.
Tickets are also on sale at
LiveNation.com.
“This is the house of rock.
This is the first arena we
ever played,” said Bruce
when he and the E Street
Band performed at the
Spectrum on April 28th.
“They don’t make arenas
like this anymore. There
is a democratic-ness to
these old buildings. It’s a treat to really be here again and playing
this lovely lady of a building.” Springsteen first performed at the
Spectrum as an opening act for Chicago on June 6, 1973. He performed a very emotional show on Dec 9, 1980, a night after John
Lennon was shot. He opened his performance that evening with
a speech to the crowd: “It’s a hard world that asks you live with a
lot of things that are unlivable. And it’s hard to come out here and
play tonight, but there’s nothing else to do.”
Springsteen also graced the Spectrum stage on Sep 24, 1999,
the night after his 50th birthday. It was a rare return to the Spectrum during a six-night stand in which he performed five of the
other shows at the neighboring Wachovia Center. The following
night (Sep 25, 1999), Springsteen performed across the parking
lot at the Wachovia Center. Comcast-Spectacor, owners of the
Wachovia Center and Spectrum, submitted to Guinness Book of
World Records “The Shortest Distance Ever Traveled by a Rock
Show” – 758 feet, nine and a half inches. Guinness turned down
the attempt.
Springsteen’s latest album Working on a Dream (Columbia
Records) debuted
at #1 World Wide,
and received
exemplary reviews
everywhere. Bruce
Springsteen and
the E Street Band
have recently
added 25 new U.S.
concert dates to
their 2009 “Workin’ On a Dream”
tour and have now
sold over 1.5 million concert tickets in 2009 alone,
with the new dates
expected to push
that number over
the two million
mark.
The Spectrum,
known as “America’s Showplace,”
will close at the
end of this upcoming final concert
series, which began
July 21, 2009 at a
sold-old Green
Day concert. Once
closed, the site of
the Spectrum will
become Philly Live,
a retail, restaurant,
and entertainment
complex.
