Giddings also offers many attractions for visitors and its residents alike,
such as antiques and specialty shops, restaurants for all tastes, museums and parks. Giddings also boasts one of the area’s finest libraries.
The Giddings Library and Cultural Center is home to many volumes of books, periodicals and special collections
including ancient Native American artifacts in the Arnold Smith Arrowhead Collection; and
baseball memorabilia in the Hilton Lee Smith National Baseball Hall of Fame Display.
Giddings also has a number of annual events to keep you entertained. From Country Music
Mondays to the Santa on the Square Christmas Celebration in November, Giddings has it covered. In May, Giddings hosts the Lee County Fair and Rodeo. The rodeo features some of the top
talent in professional rodeo. And fun for the whole family can be had at the fair with games, rides
and more. And for those who enjoy the best barbeque around, the fair hosts the annual Charcoal
Challenge barbeque cook-off featuring some of the best barbeque teams from across the state.
If you like history, you’ll find that too. Giddings
features a number of historical sites including the
historic Schubert-Fletcher Home and the historic
Lee County Courthouse. There is also a museum
celebrating the area’s Wendish-German heritage
located in nearby Serbin.

G reetings from the Giddings Area Chamber of Commerce.
We proudly present the new edition
of the Giddings Membership Directory and Visitor Guide. The Chamber has been in operation
since September of 1946 and continues to grow and provide outstanding service. We pride
ourselves with Hometown Hospitality.
It is our endeavor to continue to improve our service to our member businesses and community
as we strive to be a point of pride in this community. Many new businesses have moved into the
area and many businesses have expanded.
Giddings can also boast of one of Texas’ best school systems with the construction of a new state
of the art High School and expansion of the Elementary, Intermediate and Middle School
campuses.
All of this while maintaining a quiet and peaceful way of life. Giddings is truly unique and a
wonderful place to call “home”.
Whether you are relocating or just here for a visit, the Chamber is just a phone call or a click

Working to Grow Your Business
All members receive monthly newsletters as well as invitations to all Chamber functions such
as Business After Hours, Networking Lunches, Annual Banquet, New Member Receptions,
Membership Meetings and many other special activities.
Newsletter Advertising
The Chamber publishes a monthly newsletter. Chamber members may advertise in
the newsletter with a business card size ad for $50.00 per month. Businesses can
reserve their ad space for three months, six months or one year.
Newsletter Listing of New and Renewing Members
When a new member joins, the member’s business name, address, and phone will appear in
the Chamber newsletter under the “Welcome New Members” section. Renewing members will
be listed in a special “Renewing Members” section.
Digital Sign
Chamber members have access to an economical advertising tool with a Digital Sign. The
Digital Sign is located at the intersection of highway 290 and 77. It can be seen by thousands
of people each day. New members receive 1 week free advertising. Special pricing is available
for monthly, quarterly and yearly advertising packages.
Website
Chamber members are listed on the website alphabetically. The website has a Google Calendar
where community events are listed free of charge to all groups and organizations. Members
may also advertise their companies on the website.

Small Business Resources
The Chamber also has materials available to assist those interested in starting a
new business or furthering the business growth. The Chamber along with the SBA
and the Giddings Economic Development Corporation hold Business Development
Seminars that focus on such items as employee training, learning materials and more.

LOCATION
Giddings, the county seat of Lee County,
is located in south central Texas between
the metropolitan areas of Houston and
Austin. U.S. Highway 77, connecting the
Dallas area to the Gulf Coast area, and U.S.
Highway 290, the main connection between
Houston and Austin, intersect at Giddings.
The central location and excellent highways
connecting
Giddings
with
the
major
population
centers
are
conducive
to
convenient, quality, and cost-efficient transportation. Whether your needs include
travel or the exportation and importation of
goods, Lee County’s location provides a great
advantage when evaluating time and expense.
Giddings has bus services provided by
Kerrville Bus Company, and railroad services
by Southern Pacific. The local airport, located 3
miles west of Giddings, is equipped with a 4,000foot, lighted runway, and has a full-service
FBO and flight school. The nearest commercial
airline services are 56 miles from Giddings
at Austin Bergstrom International Airport.

Water and sewer facilities are publicly
owned within the City of Giddings and have
capacity for growth. Electricity is furnished
by the City of Giddings within the city limits
and by Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative in the
rest of the county. Natural Gas is supplied by
Center Point Energy - Entex. A rural water
system is also available throughout the county.
Communications
Economic Resources
Giddings has one local weekly newspaper,
The Giddings Times & News, and has delivery
available for newspapers from Houston and
Austin. Local news website LeeCountyLive.
com, also provides timely community information. The area has cable television services.
Verizon provides telephone services, and
local internet services are provided by several
companies.
The Lee County area is blessed with varying
resources in agriculture, industry, minerals,
and tourism. The major agriculture products
include grain, and livestock. Products
produced by industries in our area consist of
feed products, fiberglass, furniture, Teflon,
and textiles. Oil and gas mineral resources
also play a vital role in the economy.

Population
The city of Giddings has an estimated
population of 5,600 while Lee County has an
estimated population of 17,500. The population has shown a positive growth pattern
throughout the decade.
Work Force
The area has a current work force of
approximately 7,352 individuals from the age
of 16, Lee County draws in adequate labor from
a 60-mile radius. The attitudes and customs of
the people stimulate them with characteristic
loyalty and pride in their work.
Education
Lee County’s educational systems help to
develop a high-quality work force. Lee County
has three public school districts. Each has a low
pupil-to-teacher ratio and a lower-than-state
average dropout rate. In addition, there are
two parochial schools in Lee County providing
education from kindergarten through eighth
grade. The public schools in the area provide a
comprehensive Special Education Curriculum,
and a Community Education Program with
activities for pre-school through senior citizen
ages. Blinn College courses are also offered in
evening classes. Quality pre-school/day-care
centers are also accessible for working parents
throughout the area.

Another asset to the Lee County area is the
quality higher education institutes within
commuting distance (60 miles of less): Blinn
College (Brenham); Texas A&M University
(College Station); Prairie View A&M (Prairie
View); University of Texas ( Austin ); Concordia
Lutheran College (Austin); Austin Community
College (Austin); St. Edward’s University (Austin);
Huston-Tillotson College (Austin); Southwestern
University (Georgetown); Texas State University
(San Marcos); and Sam Houston State
(Huntsville).

About Giddings
Residential
Residential development is a major industry
in Lee County. The cost of living in
Giddings, and Lee County in particular,
remains very low. Lee County is well serviced
by quality police, fire protection, and other
services.
Industrial Supports
As with the devoted work force in our
community, the suppliers of industrial
support also care about the community and its
success. Therefore, they provide the area with
quality, economical services and equipment.
Tax Structure
The State of Texas and the City of Giddings
impose no state or city income taxes. There
is an 8.25 percent sales tax. Ad Valorem
property taxes are levied by the state,
county, city and school district, and hospital
district.
The area tax rate is low in
comparison to other tax areas in central
Recreation
The City of Giddings operates two city
parks.
City Park is located one block
off Hwy 290 at the intersection of North
Montgomery Street. City Park is home to
the Lee County Little League Fields and City
Swimming Pool. It includes a playground,
lighted ball-fields, tennis courts, basketball
courts,
a
public
pool,
and
picnic
facilities. Simmang Park is located at 800 W.
Independence. It is the home of Hilton Lee
Smith Field, Lee County Soccer Fields,
covered basketball courts and a picnic
pavilion. The area also offers a bowling
alley, public golf course,
mountain-bike
trail system, driving range, and a large
public library. Various leagues offer a
variety of organized sports for the area youth
including soccer, basketball, softball, flag
football, swim team, and summer track.
Outdoor Activities
The area boasts a variety of outdoor
activities and wildlife, making it a favorite for
hunters and fisherman alike. Hunting includes
deer, quail, doves, and other game. Most hunts
are by arrangement with private landowners.
Exotic Game Hunts can be arranged through
Delta P Ranch. Within a 15-minute drive from
Lee County, three state parks provide beautiful
camping and recreational vehicle facilities.
Camping, fishing, hiking, boating is available
at such facilities as Nails Creek Park on Lake
Somerville, Lake Bastrop, Bastrop State Bank
and Buescher State Park.
There is also a
mountain bike trail system for bicyclist as
well as miles of beautiful country roads with
gentle hills and turns making Lee County a
favorite day trip for bicyclists.

Each year the City of Giddings and its surrounding
communities hold special events. There is usually
something happening on any given weekend. The

Each year in May, Giddings hosts the Lee County Fair.
The Lee County Fair has been voted one of the best small
fairs in Texas.
From carnival rides. craft shows and bar-b-que cook-offs to big
name country music acts, the fair is fun for the whole family.

Surrounding Communities
DIME BOX
The original community of Brown’s Mill was established in the mid-1840’s. Mail was picked up weekly
and delivered to Giddings. The carrier would bring back mail and other necessities. A dime was customarily left in a box for such services. The U.S. Postal Service then accepted the Dime Box name since the
Brown’s Mill sounded too much like “Brownsville”. When the railroad bypassed Dime Box to the south,
the town was relocated to its present day location.
LEXINGTON
Lexington is located on US Highway 77, eighteen miles north of Giddings. The town is noted for its Town
Square complete with Gazebo and handsome landscaping. Nearby is the Pioneer Village Museum; consisting of two Lee County log cabins and a log barn, circa 1850. The Lexington Chamber of Commerce

LINCOLN / EVERGREEN
Lincoln, located on Highway 21, is named after a preacher who came to Lee County in the 1880’s “trying to
convert some of the old cowboys that roamed around here.” The town was originally known as Evergreen
and was located about 1 mile from its current location. Famous outlaw Bill Longley attended school there.
Visitors will find two historical markers, a store, a post office, and Elm Creek Cafe. Elm Creek Cafe is located about four miles west of Lincoln and specializes in homemade onion rings and chicken fried steak.
Loebau
Loebau is a farming community located about 4 miles northeast of Giddings on County Road 114, about
3 miles east of US highway 77. The center of the community is Christ Lutheran Church. Each year on
Mother’s Day, Loebau is host to the Christ Lutheran Church Picnic; with plenty of good food, music and
drinks. Loebau also has an annual festival called “Loebau Fest” with music and fun for the whole family
and features music from local musicians.
WARDA
Warda is a small community located south of Giddings on US Highway 77. Nearby is the Bluff Creek
Ranch with 8 miles of well-shaded trails attract mountain bikers from all across the US and the world.
SERBIN
Serbin is located about seven miles south of Giddings, on FM 2239 just off FM 448. The community is
home to St. Paul Lutheran Church which was founded in 1854 by Reverend John Killian and 570 Wendish
Lutherans seeking religious freedom from Serbia in Eastern Prussia. The church is one of the “painted
churches” of the area and has remained unchanged through its long history. Visitors may tour The Texas
Wendish Heritage Museum while in Serbin. The museum preserves the history of the Texas Wends and
includes a historic display, gift shop, library and archives. The annual Wendish Fest is held there each
September and includes the State of Texas Noodle Cook-Off.
LEDBETTER
Ledbetter is east of Giddings on US Highway 290. Since 1891, the Stuermer Store has been a prominent
fixture. A number of other small businesses including antique shops call Ledbetter home.
NAILS CREEK - LAKE SOMERVILLE
Just northeast of Giddings off FM 180, you will find an outdoor-person’s paradise - The Nails Creek Unit
of Lake Somerville. The park offers camping, fishing, boating and hiking with 40 multi-use campsites,
picnic sites, restrooms (some with showers), boat ramps, fish cleaning shelters and over seven miles of
nature trails.

ilton Lee Smith is a true Hometown Hero. Born in Giddings, Texas,
he went on to become one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history. He
began playing baseball on his father’s local team. After stays with the
Austin Black Senators and the Monroe Monarchs, and the 1935 Semi-Pro
Championship team in Bismarck, N.D., Smith went on to play in Kansas
City for the Kansas City Monarchs.
It was in Kansas City that Smith’s fame and prowess
as a true big-league pitcher grew. There, he teamed up
with the great Satchel Paige to become a formidable
pitching tandem. Hilton Lee Smith was inducted into
the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001. To recognize the
accomplishments of one of its most famous citizens, the City
of Giddings has named its newest baseball field “Hilton Lee
Smith Field”.
