She has a wide repertoire including Old Highland Style, Scandinavian tunes and plenty of lively dance music. 10 - 11.30am lan Lowthian lan's first instrument is piano-accordion, and this workshop is for Mixed Instruments. lan has played in many ensembles with players including Mark Knopfter and Catriona Macdonald, and is a composer in his own right, so this should prove to be a memorable experience. 12noon - 1.30pm Kathryn Tickell One of Britain's leading players, multi-instrumentalist Kathryn Tickell will be teaching fiddle on this occasion. This is a great opportunity to learn from someone who has appeared with Sting, Jools Holland, and Andy Sheppard (to name but a few), and whose fame extends well beyond the traditional music world. 12noon - 1.30pm lain Fraser lain Fraser's particular interests include exploring the great rhythmic and emotional capabilities of the fiddle as well as the relationship of the fiddle with dance and the older styles of fiddle music. His teaching experience is built upon a combination of one-off workshops with adults and children and regular small group teaching. He sees his role as enabling players to develop an individual style and to help them look for new ways of being creative within the Scottish idiom. 12noon - 1.30pm Gregor Borland Gregor will concentrate on the music of his great teacher, the late Hector MacAndrew. A legend in traditional Scottish music, MacAndrew brought North East riddle music to a worldwide audience, famously instructing Yehudi Menuhin on one occasion. This is an excellent opportunity to learn some of the secrets of the trade, including 'the driven bow'. 6 Alison Cowie 10.30am - 12 noon ~ Alison Cowie has been playing fiddle music for over 20 years - 10 years each in Ontario and the UK. She has played in bluegrass and dance-bands, including Dorset Triumph. This workshop will focus on looking at how to bring that 'swingy' contradance feel to a tune. Jack Evans 1O.30am - 12 noon ~ This is a Guitar Workshop from a folk musician who can play with more than a bit of swing, as evidenced by his involvement with bands such as Keltik Elektrik and The Easy Club, also Jock Tamson's Bairns. If you want to do a bit more than just play simple chords and basic rhythms, this is for you. Jamie Laval10.30am - 12 noon m As the current U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion, we know that Jamie's technique will be impeccable. Add to that his knowledge of a wide range of styles beyond traditional music and we have the ingredients for something quite special. Paul Anderson 12.30- 2pm ~ Paul's own tutorial lineage goes back to Niel Gow via Hector MacAndrew. Paul teaches Scots fiddle in the North East style, where the character and the accents and the drive come from the bowing technique. Duncan Chisholm 12.30- 2pm iml 'There's a whole world in Duncan Chisholm's music, and it's truly magical". Duncan's musical range stretches from haunting slow airs to intricate driving rhythm. A rare opportunity to learn with a master player. Manus McGuire 12.30- 2pm ~ Manus McGuire first made his mark playing fiddle with the Irish groups Moving Cloud and Buttons & Bows and went on to record solo. With Irish roots, he also has a strong appreciation of Scottish inftuences and French-Canadian/Quebecois fiddle playing. 7 A great opponunity to team in depth with three great fiddle teachers.
