Welcome!
Hi there! What a welter of fine music we are
bringing you this year!
A cracking line-up starts on Friday with the
Katlhryn Tickell Band and Wolfstone
for Heat the Hoose. Foot-stirring stuff! And
for the ceilidh - the ever popular Lismore
Ceilidh Band. An equally fine line-up for
the Saturday concert, with Jerry Holland
from Cape Breton and Duncan Chisholm
- the master of slow airs (and good stories).
The Scots Fiddle
Festival Ltd
The company grew from Edinburgh'
Adult Learning Project Scots _Iusic
Group, graduating from a steerin
committee to an independent
registered charity in 2001.
Anyone can become a member of The
Scots Fiddle Festival Limited; in fact
we would like to encourage as many
folk as possible to join! Watch out for
our stand at the festival, where you can
sign up for the most reasonable sum of
£3 per year. Members can join any of
the organising groups - this festival is
run entirely by its members - and can
influence the decisions that we make at
every level. You will also be supporting
one of the most successful communityled festivals anywhere!
The aims of the Company. are to
advance the education of the pu rc,
primarily in Scotland, in traditional
fiddle music and the cull11re of
Scotland by the holding of festivals,
performances, workshops, talks and
exhibitions including commissions and
the creation of workshop programmes
in the community
andin schools.
A superb range of workshops, talks and
recitals. Paul Anderson will play music
from the Hector MacAndrew collection,
a theme followed through on Sunday
when Gregor Borland, Hector's pupil
will give a talk and recital. The grand
Finale will feature West Highlanders lain
MacFarlane and lain MacDonald.

who also composes and teaches. Vaila, a former Shetland Young
Traditional Musician of the Year, is now a student on the mainland.

his Scottish and Irish roots. From his many travels, he is immersed in a wide
variety of styles, including classical, jazz, and folk.
~
2pm Sarah·Jane Fifield
"The Strathspey Queen", Sarah-Jane is an outstanding performer and
teacher of Scots fiddle. A native of Inverness, she learnt from the late
Donald Riddell, one of several of his ex-pupils appearing at the Festival.
She breathes life into old Highland melodies. Now based in the Lothians,
her current activities include Bella McNab's Dance Band.
~
3pm Shetland New Tradition
We're delighted to welcome these enthusiastic young players back to the
festival. Last year's rough weather left the group stranded on Shetland
when they should have been with us, but nothing will hold them back this
time'
111 12noon Marie Fielding
4
A chance to hear a great collaborator who is now concentrating more on a
solo career. Marie, from Edinburgh, has played, taught and composed for
many years. She has travelled the world, and has been involved in over
25 recordings, playing with many distinguished folk musicians, and has
performed at the Mod and Celtic Connections.
Lori Watson and Shona Mooney 1pm !l
Two young stars in the making get their first chance to play for a fiddle
festival audience. Afinalist of BBC Scotland's Young Traditional Musician
2002, and currently a student at the RSAMD in Glasgow, Lori has travelled
widely and has a particular interest in the Borders Traditions. Shona is a
student of the first Folk and Traditional Music degree course at Newcastle
University. With the band Slant she has piayed at festivals such as
Glastonbury, Sidmouth, Border Gatherin', and
Mission Folk Festival in Canada.
Chris Stout 2pm !l
From Fair Isle, Chris has been making a big impression in the avant-garde,
jazz and traditional music scene in recent years. Here we get to hear his
beautiful solo fiddle, although you'll be more familiar with his great
playing in Fiddlers' Bid or Satsa Celtica.
Gregor Borland & Sandy Edmonstone 3pm !l
This recital honours one of the finest fiddle players in living memory,
Hector MacAndrew. Best known as a member of Caledon, Burach
and the Kathryn Tickell Band, Gregor Borland was a prize-winning
student of the great man. Gregor will play his teacher's own fiddle in
this recital. Sandy Edmonstone will accompany Gregor on piano as he
did for his famous uncle Hector.
Grand Finale 4pm !l

their native Moidart since childhood. Both have distinguished careers
behind them - Ossian, Fir Chlis and The Battlefietd Band for MacDonald;

MacFarlane. They produced a beautiful album recently, The First Harvest.
We're very sure there are many more harvests to come from these two
great friends and fantastic musicians. So sit back and relish the very finest

on the day
10 - 11.30am Jerry Holland
If you'd like to find out more about how Cape Breton fiddlers approach their
craft, this is a great opportunity Jerry encourages his students to play their best
every time, never to rehearse lazily or haphazardly, and play expressively.
10 - 11.30am Sarah-Jane Fifield
Sarah-Jane is well known as a Scots fiddle-player and teacher. She has a wide
repertoire including Old Highland Style, Scandinavian tunes and plenty of lively
dance music.
10 - 11.30am lan Lowthian
lan's first instrument is piano-accordion, and this workshop is for Mixed
Instruments. lan has played in many ensembles with players
including Mark Knopfter and Catriona Macdonald, and is a composer in his own
right, so this should prove to be a memorable experience.
12noon - 1.30pm Kathryn Tickell
One of Britain's leading players, multi-instrumentalist Kathryn Tickell will be
teaching fiddle on this occasion. This is a great opportunity to learn from someone
who has appeared with Sting, Jools Holland, and Andy Sheppard (to name but a
few), and whose fame extends well beyond the traditional music world.
12noon - 1.30pm lain Fraser
lain Fraser's particular interests include exploring the great rhythmic and
emotional capabilities of the fiddle as well as the relationship of the fiddle with
dance and the older styles of fiddle music. His teaching experience is built upon
a combination of one-off workshops with adults and children and regular small
group teaching. He sees his role as enabling players to develop an individual
style and to help them look for new ways of being creative within
the Scottish idiom.
12noon - 1.30pm Gregor Borland
Gregor will concentrate on the music of his great teacher, the late Hector
MacAndrew. A legend in traditional Scottish music, MacAndrew brought North
East riddle music to a worldwide audience, famously instructing Yehudi Menuhin
on one occasion. This is an excellent opportunity to learn some of the secrets of
the trade, including 'the driven bow'.
6
Alison Cowie 10.30am - 12 noon ~
Alison Cowie has been playing fiddle music for over 20 years - 10 years each in
Ontario and the UK. She has played in bluegrass and dance-bands, including
Dorset Triumph. Her passion is to play for dancing, especially New England
Contradancing, and her compositions have brought an American ftavour to
Edinburgh's famous Belle Star Band. This workshop will focus on looking at how
to bring that 'swingy' contradance feel to a tune.
Jack Evans 1O.30am - 12 noon ~
This is a Guitar Workshop from a folk musician who can play with more than a
bit of swing, as evidenced by his involvement with bands such as Keltik Elektrik
and The Easy Club, also Jock Tamson's Bairns. If you want to do a bit more
than just play simple chords and basic rhythms, this is for you.
Jamie Laval10.30am - 12 noon
m
As the current U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion, we know that Jamie's
technique will be impeccable. Add to that his knowledge of a wide range of styles
beyond traditional music and we have the ingredients for something quite special.
Paul Anderson 12.30- 2pm ~
Paul's own tutorial lineage goes back to Niel Gow via Hector MacAndrew. Paul
teaches Scots fiddle in the North East style, where the character and the
accents and the drive come from the bowing technique.
Duncan Chisholm 12.30- 2pm
iml
'There's a whole world in Duncan Chisholm's music, and it's truly magical".
Duncan's musical range stretches from haunting slow airs to intricate driving
rhythm. A rare opportunity to learn with a master player.
Manus McGuire 12.30- 2pm ~
Manus McGuire first made his mark playing fiddle with the Irish groups
Moving Cloud and Buttons & Bows and went on to record solo. With Irish
roots, he also has a strong appreciation of Scottish inftuences and
French-Canadian/Quebecois fiddle playing.
7
A great opponunity to team in depth with three great fiddle teachers.
Masterclasses are open to a public audience, with eight students
panicipating in each class. Panicipants should have been playing for three
years or more and be competent fiddlers. In order to ensure your place
please book no later than 7th November. Enrol using the booking form.
Audience entrance with a Day or Weekender Ticket
C2 - 3.30pm Chris Stout
Whether he is syncopating Shetland-style or in a more folk-jazz
improvisational idiom, Chris Stout is refreshingly original and open to a
wide variety of influences. This masterclass will benefit experienced players
who would like to add an extra dimension to their playing style.
t
4 - 5.30pm David Greenberg
We are delighted to welcome David Greenberg to the Festival for the first
time. David is an internationally-renowned teacher who moves effortlessly
between early classical and Scottish traditional music. In this masterclass
he will concentrate on the Golden Age of 18th century Scottish fiddle music.
Steve Burnett
t
2 - 3.30pm Jerry Holland
Jerry Holland is steeped in Cape Breton
music. As well as having a worldwide
reputation as a performer, he is an accomplished tutor, so this masterclass provides
an opportunity to learn about Cape Breton
fiddling from one who expects great things
of his students. Only those who are ready to
play with passion and energy need register!
