GATEWAY HARMONICA CLUB NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 The Reeder Please visit us on the Internet at www.gatewayharmonicaclub.org NNEWS ews AND and VIEWS Views – Mary by JayAnn Hotze - by Love One of the great traditional portions of the GHC meetings is the “Open Mic” following the practice. This is an opportunity for the members (and guests) to show off their practice efforts or to learn from the more experienced members. You may not be aware of the fact that the club has a “Code of Ethics” established many years ago, one that was adopted from SPAH’s Code of Ethics. Following is our Code and all members and visitors are reminded of the courtesies expressed in the Code: CODE OF ETHICS Be courteous to your fellow members and guests. Unless otherwise directed, No playing or talking while others are performing. Your undivided attention toward the speaker or player is a necessity so the greatest benefit can be derived by each member, In keeping with one of the purposes of Gateway Harmonica Club, those who are advanced players should bear in mind that they should assist beginners or intermediate players. Except when performing for demonstration purposes, formed groups should not congregate by themselves and use the club meeting for a practice session. New members, guests and all members in all stages of development must be made welcome and aware of the club’s sincerity in goals that have been established by the club. How I Joined the Gateway Harmonica Club It has been expressed to your editor that it would be interesting to hear from the members as to how or why you joined the Gateway Harmonica Club. We would like to make this feature a regular part of the newsletters. You can send your thoughts to me either in the form of an email or attach a document to an email or you can write up something on a scrap piece of paper. My email addresses are [email protected] or [email protected]. Our first “How I Joined the Gateway Harmonica Club” is from longtime member Jim Melchers: “My parents were attending a festival in Vichy, MO back in 1988 and heard some harmonica players playing. They went up and spoke to them afterwards and got their information and passed it along to me. I attended a meeting at the Clayton library and joined the club but I was traveling a lot for work and was in a band at church so I didn’t really have a lot of time to devote to it and I didn’t keep my membership up. By 1995 I was not traveling as much and wasn’t playing anywhere else when I remembered Dan Perez’s name and tracked down the club again. I rejoined and started attending regularly and learning the music. I’ve been enjoying it ever since. Jim Melchers *********************************** A Bit of Humor A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking around with a fly swatter. “What are you doing?” she asked. “Hunting flies,” he responded. “Oh! Are you killing any?” she asked. “Yep, three males, two females,” he replied. Intrigued, she asked, “How can you tell them apart?” He responded, “Three were on a beer can, two were on the phone.” 1 1 Bill Dulin, left and Winslow Yerxa GATEWAY HARMONICA CLUB REEDER is a bimonthly publication of the THETHE GHCGHC REEDER is a bimonthly publication of the Gateway Harmonica Club, Inc. of St. Louis, Missouri, Gateway Harmonica Club, Inc. of St. Louis, Missouri, a a nonprofit organization dedicated the preservation nonprofit organization dedicated to thetopreservation and and advancement of the harmonica. Please visit us on the Internet at www.gatewayharmonicaclub.org NEWS AND VIEWS - by Mary Ann Love 1 3 GATEWAY HARMONICA CLUB NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 TIME TO CHANGE OUR ATTIRE Julie Andrews sang the following (perhaps on her 80th birthday) Those who play in the gigs are to change to our Fall/Winter attire. Until further notice we will wear our red vests, white shirt and black slacks. Sung to the tune of “My Favorite Things” Botox and nose drops and needles for knitting, Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings. Bundles of magazines tied up in string, These are a few of my favorite things. We are currently practicing our Christmas music and new program, which we will play after Thanksgiving. If you have not gotten a copy of the new program, please talk to Frank. Cadillacs and cataracts, hearing aids and glasses, Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses, Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings, These are a few of my favorite things. ********************************* When the pipe leaks, When the bones creek, When the knees go bad, I simply remember my favorite things. And then I don’t feel so bad. GHC CHRISTMAS PARTY SET FOR DECEMBER 1, 2015 Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions, No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions, Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring, These are a few of my favorite things. Our first meeting in December is traditionally the date for our Club Christmas party and this year it falls on Tuesday, December 1. All family members are invited. Please bring a dish to share and be prepared for a great evening of fellowship and food. Back pain, confused brains and no need for sinnin’, Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin’, And we won’t mention our short shrunken frames, When we remember our favorite things. When the joints ache, When the hips break, When the eyes go dim, Then I remember the great life I’ve had, And then I don’t feel so bad. The above lyrics were supplied to me by one of our members (unfortunately I didn’t make a note as to who handed me the sheet of paper, Frank, perhaps? I apologize for not providing attribution.) A quick internet search resulted in a few references and it wasn’t her 80th birthday, it was, according to legend, her 69th birthday in 2004. But, it is all fiction! See the next page from “Truth or Fiction” with different words and more of the story. 4 4 GATEWAY HARMONICA CLUB Julie Andrews singing about aging-Fiction!
