Merrill Gardens offers exclusive
Anytime Dining program
There is nothing more satisfying than a lovely
meal with great friends. At Merrill Gardens, our
exclusive Anytime Dining program gives residents
the freedom to enjoy dining on their own schedule
in our restaurant style dining room. Our executive
chefs prepare the meals fresh to order all day and
there are no set meal hours.
“Our goal is to delight residents with the quality
and variety of the food our chefs are preparing every
day,” says Nick Olla, Directory of Culinary Services at
Merrill Gardens. “We also want to make sure that
they are able to dine on a schedule that suits their
particular lifestyle. For us, it’s all about choice and
making sure that we are meeting the needs of everyone who lives at our community. We want people
to be able to dine at our communities just like they
did in their own homes”
The Merrill Gardens Anytime Dining program
means the dining room is open from 7am to 7pm
and residents choose when they want to dine each
day. There is no need to worry about missing a meal
or scheduling activities around set meal times. Residents just leave their apartments and head to our
dining room for a fresh meal from the kitchen that is
cooked to their specifications whenever it fits their
schedule.
“Our chefs also work closely with residents to
find out what kind of items they want to see on our
menus and they have a lot of flexibility to incorporate regional favorites. We also love to include
dishes made from our resident’s favorite recipes. It’s
like having your favorite chef and restaurant right in
your home,” says Olla.
The exclusive Anytime Dining program is offered
at all Merrill Gardens communities in the Puget
Sound region.

year-round gardening
Residents at Harbor Pointe Senior Living enjoy
gardening, they enjoy it a lot actually – so much in
fact that this year they have partnered with Mukilteo
Community Gardens to support gardening and harvesting for the food bank, in addition to planting
their own favourite herbs for the kitchen and the
Chef’s new menu.
“We’re doing our own ‘farm-to-table’ experience
right here in our community — growing local, organic
herbs and even some vegetables which our Chef has
planned to add to salads and garnishes,” said a Harbour Pointe resident.
Earlier this spring residents and staff planned a
special afternoon to raise monies to help with the
volunteer efforts of the gardening. They raised close
to $400.00 in a short time with a ‘shredding event’.
Volunteers were out in the parking lot alongside
staff and volunteers from Harbour Pointe
Senior Living and the shredding truck.
People gave generously to the gardens
this year.

Assisted Living or Memory Care?
We Are Here For You.
Tips for buying the right lift chair
A motorized lift-up chair can make life convenient
and more comfortable for both those who have
limited movement and their caretakers. There are
many different types of these chairs on the market,
so here are some tips on what you should look for
when shopping for just the right one for you or a
loved one.
First you need to determine what kind of lift chair
is more suitable for your needs. Some come in 2-positions — sitting up straight and a partial recline
while elevating the feet, along with the lift-up position. You can also opt for a 3-positions chair which
includes a napping position that reduces lower back
pain, relieves swelling in legs, ankles and feet, as
well as reducing muscle tension. Finally there is the
3-position chair with an “Infinity Position,” and dual
motors. This chair gives the widest choice of reclining positions including a sleep recline. The double
motors allow for controlling the footrest and the
back of the chair independently. (With one motor, a
person must be reclined in order for the footrest to
be elevated.)
Once you have determined whether or not the person using the chair might nap or sleep in it, you must
consider the size of the chair. Sitting in the chair, the
person must be able to have their feet on the floor
when sitting upright. The width of the chair must
also be a good match. And much like a mattress the
cushioning should be comfortable.
Some lift chair offer memory foam. Others supply
extra support of the neck, back or lumbar. This extra
support can help to keep the user from slouching
over time when in the chair.
Other items you will want to consider when choosing a lift chair:
1. Does it have a battery back-up in case the power
goes out?
2. If it has a heating option are you able to adjust the
temperature?
3. Is there enough room between where you are going to place the chair in your home and the wall

when it is fully reclined?
4. Is your door wide enough to get the chair through?
Some styles have removable arms that the delivery
person can replace once the chair is in place.
5. Be sure to ask what type of delivery is included.
Golden Technologies was founded in 1985 on one
principle that still holds true today: build it right the
first time.
The staff at Greenbaum Home Furnishings say their
best sellers are from Golden, a company that has the
largest factory in the world dedicated solely to the
manufacture of lift chairs.
“These chairs are made in America and are extremely high quality,” said Steve Greenbaum, one of the
store’s owners. “Golden lift chairs are known for their
comfort and durability.”
Golden is the only manufacturer that offers four different chair styles in their “ULTRA COMFORT,” fine
furniture line-up which includes The Stellar Comfort, Montage, Tranquility and Leisure Collections.
Their patented recline technology provides consumers with the smoothest, quietest motion experience
from a full recline into the Trendelenburg position,
to the zero-gravity position. Some chairs go all the
way to the fully lifted position. No other company
offers motion systems as quiet and reliable.
“As a family-owned, second generation furniture and
design store, we pride ourselves on offering only the
very best comfort solutions for our customers,” said
Greenbaum. “If you are looking for a lift chair, come
by and try them out. Our staff can help you make the
best choice for your individual needs.”

Older Americans,
by the numbers
President Kennedy first celebrated older Americans by designating May 1963 as Senior Citizens
Month. After a meeting with the National Council of
Senior Citizens, Kennedy encouraged all Americans
to pay tribute to older people across the country. Every President since has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May in support
of older Americans. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter’s
proclamation changed the name to Older Americans
