Pinto Basto tours
Portugal &
Spain
The excitement begins here.
Visit Portugal and Spain your way.
You have several choices when considering how to
visit our countries. Traditionally, the easiest way to
see the country has been with an escorted motorcoach tour. In these programs, you are escorted
from place to place along an itinerary in a deluxe
motorcoach accompanied by a local, Englishspeaking guide. The hotel accommodations and many
of the meals are provided. You receive expert
commentary from the guide and many of the chores
of travel are taken care of for you. Pinto Basto offers
a selection of escorted one-day and multi-day tours.
The Fly - Drive Program is an alternative that
allows you to make all of the decisions regarding the
itinerary, accommodations and how much time you
will spend in each place. Travelling independently
provides the freedom many of our guests want with
the added advantage of being able to explore those
“off the beaten path” spots and enjoy some of the
smaller, more historic accommodations. These
programs are our specialty and we will assist you
with your itinerary every step of the way. Why take
the chance of doing it on your own?
Our Philosophy at
Pinto Basto
We believe that travel to Portugal and Spain should
highlight the amazing differences between life in North
America and the history, culture and charm of the Old
World. Our aim is to assist you in creating a trip that
captures the spirit of the country.
To that end, we recommend hotels and other
accommodations that will give you a feel for the country.
We encourage you to explore the natural as well as the
cultural treasures. Visit the national parks, enjoy the wild
life in the parks and along the shores. Get out and take a
walk in the country or on the beach, rent a bike or a horse
or climb a mountain!
Our role is one of advisor and we want this to be your
best travel experience ever. Therefore, we will offer
advice on the best routes and places to stay. We try to
keep you from making any mistakes that could detract
from your enjoyment.
The Private Car and Driver is a variation of the
Fly Drive Program where we arrange the accommodations and provide an English speaking driver to
take you from place to place. This is a luxurious way
to travel, especially for those who enjoy the finer
things in life. Pinto Basto can arrange any length
program throughout Portugal and Spain.
The Stay-Put Program is another way to visit.
Select a city or choose a villa, house or apartment
in the country. From your base you can make day
trips around the city or region. Local transportation
and day tours are at your disposal.

Lisbon & the Costa Lisboa
L
isbon, Portugal’s capital city, was first settled by the
Phoenicians over 2,000 years ago and has yet to give way
to the modernization that has diluted the character of other
European capitals. This ancient city boasts the Alfama, a unique
area, centuries old with the narrow lanes of an Arab souk. The
Belem section celebrates the “Age of the Discoveries” with the
monuments to Portugal’s world explorers. Here you can visit
the Belem Tower, Jeronimos Monastery and the Coach & Maritime Museums. Be sure to stop for a cup of coffee and a Pasteis
de Belem (a delicious pastry with custard filling served warm).
Lisbon’s nightlife is varied with Fado Houses, (fado is Portugal’s
soul music.) For night life, the city’s new focus is the old dock
area by Alacantara, which now offers numerous clubs, discos
and restaurants that are opened until the wee hours.
Much of the Expo ‘98 site has been converted into a park that
offers an excellent new aquarium, scores of cafes and restaurants and a large performance arena.

rolling hills, umbrella pines, olive groves and grazing

traveler fortress towns with hilltop castles, prehistoric sites
and wonderful towns settled in Roman times. The food here is
excellent and Alentejan wine rivals the north for top honors.
Evora, the capital of the region is not to be missed. It is a
wonderfully preserved medieval walled town but it is alive
with activity. Vila Viçosa was the ancient regional capital

Pousadas & Paradores
Pousadas of Portugal
Pousadas of Portugal &
Paradores of Spain
Classifications:
Pousadas fall into one of two categories, regional or historic, and all rooms are comfortable with private bathrooms.
Historic pousadas are in converted palaces, castles and monasteries. Prices include service, tax and a breakfast.
Paradores are classified by their style of architecture in the
following categories: Castels (Cas), Convents (Con), Palaces (Pal), Regional Style (Reg), Historic (His) and Modern
(Mod). All prices include service tax and a buffet breakfast.
Booking Tips:
1. Plan your journey. Try to keep your driving time to 3-4 hours
per day. You can figure on an average of 100 km per hour.
2. Review the suggested itinerary. Use the Pousada, Parador
and hotel ratings to ensure that the trip is right for your lifestyle
and budget. Make any changes to the routing that you like,
change direction, add or subtract nights, but try to follow the
sequence presented.
3. Don’t make your air or rental car arrangements until you
discuss your itinerary with us.
4. Choose the Pousadas, Paradores and hotels that you would
like, but also try and include an alternate. Part of the charm of
Pousadas/Paradores is that they are small. Consequently, your
first choice may not be available.
5. When planning your itinerary, do not neglect the north of the
country. This is a fabulous area and seldom visited by people
from North America. They are fun regions with the fewest visitors.
P
ousadas of Portugal and Paradores of Spain offer
the romance of old Europe in lodgings like castles,
palaces, monasteries, manor houses and country
houses! Portugal’s system of exotic lodging called Pousadas
and Spain’s beautiful Paradores, along with small, privatelyowned properties provide a unique and enjoyable way to
visit the Iberian Peninsula. You can soak up its culture as
you meet its people. Some of the accommodations are in
historical buildings, many of which are hundreds of years
old and all of them are located in areas that will give you a
taste of the real Europe. So read the following tips and
come join us for an unforgettable holiday!
12
http://pousada.com
6. Keep in mind that although the distances between the towns
are not great, the driving, especially in the mountains and river
vallies, can be slow. Plan accordingly. It will add to your enjoyment.
7. Call Pinto Basto to make the booking. Because Pousadas and
Paradores are small, you can not expect to have rooms available
for you if arrive without reservations.
When refueling, BE CAREFUL!
Gasoleo is not gasoline! It is diesel fuel. Most rental cars
take unleaded gasoline, which is “sem chumbo” in Portugal
and “sin plombo” in Spain. The type of fuel that a vehicle
uses is usually on a placard inside the cover of the fuel port.
Gas stations are usually self service, help yourself, then pay,
virtually all accept most major credit cards.
An international drivers license is suggested for Spain or any
trip exceeding 90 days.
