Lathes sold to
Middle East
energy firms
Broadbent Stanley,
a specialist in heavy
duty, oil country manual lathes, is
reporting a reversal in the ratio of
CNC and manual machines sold.
While the former have dominated
in recent years, conventional
machines are exhibiting something
of a renaissance, particularly in the
Middle East. The recent machine
orders, mainly for hollow spindle PA
models, include: a PA 40 x 3000
mm for Perfect Tools of Dubai; a PA
45 x 2000 mm destined for Saudi
Arabia; and two BS430 x 760 mm
models for KNPC of Kuwait.
“A decade ago we were selling
two or three CNC lathes for every
10 of our hollow spindle, manual
machines, but in recent times that
figure has almost reversed with
the bulk of our turning business
now being a mix of flat and slant
bed CNC lathes,” says managing
director Graham Thomas. “Oddly,
over the past few weeks the vast
percentage of our lathe order
intake has been for conventional
machines, even though orders
for CNC models are holding up
well. To say we’re overwhelmed is
something of an understatement.”

Fastest optimism rise since 70s
Business optimism among manufacturers
saw its sharpest improvement since 1973
on the back of strong growth in orders at home
and abroad. That’s according to the latest CBI
quarterly Industrial Trends Survey. The survey of
405 manufacturers found that in the three months to
April 2014, growth in total order books and domestic
orders was the fastest since 1995. Export orders
grew strongly, while investment intentions for the year
ahead remained particularly robust. Output growth
was solid for the second consecutive quarter, while
numbers employed rose at the strongest rate since
October 2011. Firms are also upbeat about the next
quarter, with growth expectations for domestic orders
and output the highest since the 1970s.

Dugard sell 17 machines
Dugard is reporting that it
sold a total of 17 machines
at the MACH 2014 exhibition held
at the Birmingham NEC last month.
Sales included three of the new
Dugard 500A cost-competitive
VMCs, three Dugard 1000E VMCs,
and two Dugard 760E models.
Dugard also had success with the
largest machine on the stand, the
Dugard HD1886B, selling two to
the same customer, as well as two
of the bigger HD2210 models. The
company also reports sales of two
Dugard 52 TTSY CNC lathes and
two Samsung PL45MC CNC lathes.
“We couldn’t be more pleased
with the results from the show
as orders this year have been
exceptional,” says managing
director, Eric Dugard. “MACH is
always a great show for us, not
just with the orders we receive, but
the excellent contacts and leads
it generates for months, and even
years after the event.”

bender at SL
Aerospace tubular
parts manufacturer
SL Engineering of Sleaford has
acquired a second all-electric
CNC tube bending machine
from Unison. The new machine,
a Unison Breeze 80, enhances
SL Engineering's manufacturing
prowess, especially its ability to
produce more complex tubular
shapes. It also extends the size
range of tubing that can be bent
using all-electric servomotorcontrolled movement – to tube
and pipe diameters up to 80
mm.

MACH bonanza
for XYZ
MACH 2014 is
proving to be the
best exhibition in the 30 year
history of XYZ Machine Tools,
with orders taken during the
five day exhibition exceeding all
expectations. And, with orders
continuing to arrive on a daily
basis, the company is looking
forward to a record breaking
year as well. Total sales for XYZ
immediately after the Easter break
stood at 44 machines, valued at
more than £1.54m.
“The response to our
attendance at MACH has been
fantastic; if they had shut the doors
at the end of Tuesday we would
have been more than happy with
the business we had done,” says
Nigel Atherton, managing director.
“By the end of the week we had
taken almost 600 enquiries, 200 of
which I would describe as hot, with
the staff back at the office working
non-stop to fulfil the requests for
information. Securing firm orders
for 26 machines, delivering a
value in excess of £1.1m, this is
our best result ever from a MACH
exhibition.”

IKCO set 2014 target
Iran-based car manufacturer, IKCO,
is targeting the production of 600,000
passenger cars and pick-ups by the end of the
current Iranian year (through to 21 March 2015),
says the company's CEO and president Hashem
Yeke Zare. What’s more, some 30% of this total is
expected to come from export markets.
In other news from IKCO, the company has
announced the establishment of a production plant
in neighbouring Iraq. According to Ali Elmi, the
company’s deputy CEO, the site is situated to the
south of Baghdad in the city of Eskandariye. It is
estimated that the facility will produce around 20,000
Samand, Soren and Runna sedans every year,
which equates to approximately 60 cars a day.

Amada celebrate UKTC
with open houses
Sheet metal machinery

Toyoda
introduce HMC
A new generation of
horizontal machining
centres from Toyoda Machinery
is launched in the UK having
800 and 630 mm pallet sizes.
The Japanese machine tool
manufacturer is claiming
best-in-class for workpiece
swing, axis strokes and cutting
performance. The Toyoda
FH800SX-I, for example, has
a workpiece swing of 1500
mm for parts up to 1500 mm in
height and weighing up to 2.5
tonnes. X-axis travel is 1450
mm by 1250 mm in Y, while the
Z-axis is 1550 mm. Each axis
is able to travel at up to 54 m/
min with an acceleration of 4.9
m/sec². Available in the UK
through 2D CNC, the Toyoda
machines are produced from
large graphite ductile cast beds
to reduce any influence from
thermal displacement with
matching, thermally symmetrical
structures that reduce any heat
related thermal twist. There is
also a choice of linear scale
positioning or the latest Toyoda
development of a displacement
sensor at the end of each
ballscrew drive to monitor and
measure elongation of the entire
screw with feedback correction.

Robodrill Alpha
Fanuc UK has
announced the launch
of the Robodrill Alpha (D21iA5),
a high speed, high precision
CNC machining centre. The
machine is said to offer a
range of benefits including:
directly driven axes for quick
acceleration of 1.5 G in all
three axes (54 m/min); dynamic
spindle with 10,000 or 24,000
rpm speed; optimal acceleration
and deceleration control for
efficient machining and shorter
cycle times; large travel stroke
up to 700 x 400 x 330 mm; and

Ward CNC to
install world’s
largest mill
The world’s largest
machining centre of its
kind available for collaborative
research is being installed at
the Nuclear AMRC by TW Ward
CNC Machinery (Ward CNC),
the exclusive UK and Ireland
distributor for Soraluce of Spain.
With a Soraluce FX12000 floortype travelling-column milling
and boring centre at its heart,
a machine with X, Y and Z
traverses of 12,000 by 5300 by
1900 mm, the system will process
workpieces weighing up to 65
tonnes and measuring up to 12 m
long by 5 m diameter.
Equipped with an automatic
head changing system that will
utilise a range of machining heads
– orthogonal indexing, universal
indexing, fixed horizontal and
boring, and boring and facing
(plus a rotary/travelling table
of 3,500 by 3,500 mm) – the
machine will be used to develop
and demonstrate advanced
manufacturing processes for large
pressure vessels, high value
reactor internals and offshore wind
turbine hubs.
“The machining capability
offered by the Soraluce will enable
full-size parts for small modular
nuclear reactors to be machined,
ideally in one-hit, therefore
for the first time providing UK
manufacturers with a potentially
lucrative foothold in this global
business,” says the Nuclear
AMRC’s head of machining, Stuart

Hampshire-based
precision subcontractor,
Innova Design & Build, has
invested in a Mikron five-axis
machining centre with integrated
automation. The machine, a preowned Mikron UCP 600 Vario with
seven-station automatic pallet is
designed for 3+2 positional and
simultaneous five-axis machining,
and has been installed at the
company’s Emsworth facility.
The machine provides Innova
with much-needed additional
manufacturing capacity and
flexibility, and its integrated
automation enables the company
to run the Vario overnight and at
weekends. Since January 2014,
it has been running around the
clock. The machine is being used
to machine a range of complex,
high precision components for the
aerospace, marine, rail, space and
electronics industries.
“Demand for high quality, low
volume complex components has
been steadily increasing across
a variety of sectors. Customers
are now requiring us to do their
larger production runs with shorter
lead-times; so investment in new
machinery, software and people
is crucial,” says Hugh Watson,

MU Tech by Huron is a
new entry-level threeaxis milling machine that has
the distinctive feature of being
equipped as standard with an
electro-spindle. Versatile and
multi-application, the Francebuilt MU Tech can also operate
in 3+2 axis mode. It offers high
power at low speed for rough
cutting of large parts since it
can be used at service class
S1 starting at 3000 rpm and
at service class S6 for 40% of
the time at 2200 rpm. Finishing
operations can subsequently
be performed in five-axis mode
at high speed. MU Tech 6, the
first version available, features
a 600 mm diameter table. The
high speed electro-spindle
provides 23 kW of power
with 75 Nm of torque and a
maximum speed of 12,000
rpm. The electro-spindle is also
equipped with a rotary head
(B-axis), where +30°/-120°
rotation allows components
to be machined vertically and
horizontally. The 600 mm
diameter rotary table (C-axis)

UK debut
for Matsuura
MX-850
At the MACH
2014 exhibition
in Birmingham last month,
Matsuura gave a UK debut to
the Japan-built MX-850, the
company’s latest single table
five-axis machining centre.
The Matsuura was seen
cutting a helicopter component
measuring 700 mm in diameter
and weighing 200 kg. Three
table types are available in
the MX-850 range: 500 mm
diameter (standard); 700 mm
diameter (option); or 500 mm
diameter plus flat table. In
addition to a standard spindle of
12,000 rpm, there is an optional
20,000 rpm version available
for high speed machining or
15,000 rpm for heavy duty
machining. Matsuura’s IPS
collision avoidance system
is incorporated to facilitate
complex five-axis machining.

Haas a class
apart at Leiden
The engineering
department at the Leiden
instrument-makers School (LiS)
in the Netherlands has installed
three new Haas CNC milling
machines: two Super Mini Mills
and a VF1.
As a result of its investment in
Haas machines, LiS is now one
of the few schools where students
can pursue machining courses at
a high level, both conventionally
and using CNC, as principal
Dick Harms confirms: “We are
distinguishing ourselves from
other training facilities because
students learn by actually doing.
Our conviction is that students
first have to learn the subject
manually and then on CNC. As a
result, they can put their practical
knowledge to use immediately
when they start work in industry.”
The choice of Haas, in
part, was made based on the
machines’ favourable cost/quality
ratio and the good experience LiS
gained from a previously installed
Haas machine. “Once you have
invested in tools and software, it
does not make sense to purchase
machines on which they no longer
fit,” says Mr. Harms.
LiS also undertakes precision
contract work for nearby
aerospace organisations such
as ESTEC, the European Space
Research and Technology Centre,
which is located just 5 km away
at Noordwijk, and Leiden-based
Dutch Space (an EADS Astrium
company), a supplier of subsystems for the European space
industry.

In mid-2014, Starrag
UK says it will install an
LX051 five-axis machining centre
at the Advanced Manufacturing
Research Centre (AMRC) near
Rotherham. The machine has been
developed specifically with twindrive technology for manufacturing
turbine blades at extremely high
cutting speeds. The LX051 can
also process impellers and small
blisks, as well as conventional
prismatic components.
The AMRC’s LX051 will
feature Starrag’s cryogenic
cooling system (pictured), which
is said to improve productivity by
70% and double tool life if cutting
parameters remain unchanged.
Developed in conjunction with
tooling manufacturer Walter AG,
this cooling system sees liquid
CO2 applied to the centre of
the cutting tool via the machine
spindle (at room temperature
and without loss of pressure) to
dissipate cutting temperatures and
therefore minimise tool friction and
swarf adhesion.
By utilising air, coolant, mist
and cryogenics, the LX051 will
also enable the AMRC to research
the effects of different coolant
systems.

of the machine bed, column
and feed drives has led to 30%
improvements in accuracy,
while larger linear guides and
ballscrew drives have resulted
in 30% better rigidity and cutting
performance, says DMG Mori.
In addition, the new wheel
magazines can hold up to 363
tools and achieve 0.5 second
tool change times. The newly
developed B-axis milling head
offers a swivel range of 250°/70° and the bigger axis bearing
ensures 20% increased rigidity
of the machine’s milling head
housing.
