Isaac Merrit Singer By : Joe Tran Mrs. Wellins World History, P. 1 April 6, 2016 Birth and Death Birth - October 27, 1811, in Pittstown, New York. Death - July 23, 1875, in Torquay, England. Childhood - Raised in Oswego, New York. - When he was 12, left home to work As an unskilled laborer - As a teen, took on an apprenticeship As a mechanic - Later on, he abandoned his job to Form a traveling theater troupe -While on tour, he showed promiscuous Behavior, which resulted in the birth of a Dozen and a half kids Education -Singer ran away at 12, with minimal education -He serviced as an apprentice for a mechanic, Where he learned everything. Contribution to Society -In 1839, patented a rock drilling machine for government -Partnered with Edward Clark, to create I.M. Singer & Company. - Were able to make parts for their sewing machine, and cut production costs, making the sewing machines affordable. - Over the years, Singer continued to expand, and was incorporated in 1863, under Singer Manufacturing Company Life Events - When Singer was teen, he abandoned his job to join a traveling theater troupe. While on tour, he frequently engaged in promiscuous behavior, resulting in the birth of 18 children. -In 1850, while singer was working as a sewing machine repairman, his boss asked him to fix a Lerow & Blodgett sewing machine.When Singer was presented with this task, he took matters into his own hands, and designed and built a far more superior model. Since his sewing machine used some of the basic principles of Elias howe’s sewing machine, when Singer went to patent it, Howe sued him and won. This didn’t stop Singer from producing his machine, and partnered with Edward Clark to create I.M. Singer & Company. Failures - After nine years of going on tour with his traveling theater troupe, Singer went broke and the group had to disband - When Singer invented a woodand-metal-carving machine, he opened a factory to manufacture his product, but sadly the factory was destroyed in an explosion. Achievements - Since Singer was able to mass produce parts, cutting down production costs, he could sell his sewing machines for only $10. - Over the years, Singer improved his sewing machines and opened new facilities. - By 1860, his company was the largest sewing machine manufacturer in the world. - By the time Singer was one year in retirement, Singer and Clark incorporated under the name Singer Manufacturing Company, and had secured 22 patents - Soon after, the company launched its first overseas factory in Glasgow, Scotland. Mentors -As a teen, Singer was apprenticed to a mechanic. -Later on, he found inspiration from a Lerow & Blodgett machine and Elias Howe’s principles. - He also worked with Edward Clark to create his business Relevance Today -Singer Changed how fast sewing machines worked, and his ideas are still influenced today. - Today, Singer still produces sewing machines, and they’re better and more high tech than ever. - Singer Sewing machines has been around for 164 years!
