Man Ray
Man Ray (1890 – 1976) was an American modernist artist spent most of his career in Paris. He
was a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements. He produced major works in
a variety of media but considered himself a painter above all. He was best known in the art world
for his avant-garde photography, and he was a renowned fashion and portrait photographer. Ray is
also noted for his works with photograms, which he called “rayographs” in reference to himself.
With totally 156 works by Man Ray on display, this exhibiton is a comprehensive presentation of
his artistic creation in different stages.

Pop Art Factory─ 50 Years of Art and Consumer Culture
With the rise of pop culture and consumerism, Pop Art as a movement explored the public life and took
prominence in the western art scene in the 60s. It later on also became the inspiration for contemporary Asian
artists. This current exhibition, curated by British curator Stephen McCoubrey, presents important works from the
private collection of UBS. Spanning across the past half century, these works begin with the classic American
Pop Art of the 60s, move on to the most influential European artists during the 80s and 90s, and conclude with
the most exciting artists of the contemporary Asian art scene. Works of artists including Andy Warhol, Roy
Lichtenstein, and Claes Oldenburg demonstrate many different interpretations on the contemporary consumer
culture with their diverse and accessible presentation methods. From past to present, from the classic to the
avant garde, from the west to the east, these works invite us to reflect on our society and the everyday life.

Pop Art Factory─ Heating‧Cooling‧Contemporary Art in Taiwan
The exhibition intends to comb through the transformation and influence of the “Pop Art” spirit on Taiwan’s art development
from two dimensions. The first one is to look at how this Western art movement has converged and merged with local objects
and symbols in Taiwan from the historical perspective. This dimension also reflects the diversified facets
of Taiwan’s history as a world factory. The second dimension is to look at how Taiwanese artists have
“processed” and “reproduced” the forms and spirit of Pop Art, adding different kinds of brand-new and fun
interpretations to its themes, materials and spirit. From this exhibition, viewers can appreciate how artists
incorporate their careful observation of local living environments and contexts in their processing of fine
art into something more appealing to the general public’s taste, and how artists play with symbols from
folk culture, cartoons, politics, or business in creating many interesting and inspiring works that discuss the
relationships among artistic creation, popular culture, social issues and consumerism.

Marvelous Encounters in the Collection:
On Wings of Music and Poetry
This exhibition, in which the works collected by Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts are given a new life through
their integration with poetry and music, is essentially a deep dialogue and exchange among the participating
poets, musicians and artists. Also on display are photographic portraits of the artists that reflect their unique
personalities through the photographers’ interpretations. In this exhibition, the energy of cross-disciplinary
integration of art and culture converges, bringing viewers a feast for their eyes, ears and hearts as well as
helping to fulfill the purpose of museum collection for art education and promotion.

The Era of “Lion Art”
Lion Art Monthly is Taiwan’s very first professional art magazine. Over its 26 years of publication from 1971
to 1996, there have been totally 307 monthly issues of this magazine. It contains thorough and confident
records of a vibrant chapter in Taiwan’s art development. The perseverance and ideological concepts behind
the magazine are more valuable than its commercial values. The members of its editorial team for each
issue are now heavyweight scholars and critics with continuous influence on Taiwan’s art and culture. From
this exhibition, viewers can travel back in time to those years of vigorous and pure artistic creation in Taiwan

A Symphony of Printmaking and Painting: The Art of Liao Shiou-Ping
Because of his print masterpieces and outstanding achievements in the education and promotion of the art of printmaking, Liao
is reputed as “Father of Modern Printmaking in Taiwan”, who has won a lot of major international awards and whose works have
been collected by major art museums at home and abroad. Undoubtedly, Liao’s print works are
already well-known and well-discussed in Taiwan. However, it is only by looking at the full picture of
Liao’s life as an artist that we can better understand this master and his art and then have deeper
appreciation of its soul-touching beauty. This exhibition displays over 100 works created by Liao using
different kinds of media such as print, oil painting and sketching. It is the first exhibition in Taiwan
that takes an unprecedentedly comprehensive retrospective of Liao’s art, presenting a symphony of
artistic creativity and life wisdom in front of viewers.

Commemorative Exhibition of Hsu Su-chen
Hsu found the inspirational nutrition and energy for her artistic creation from her cross-disciplinary experiences in medical science,
theatrical performance, artistic creation and community building. Within just a few years, she curated many diversified exhibitions
and created an abundance of works in different varieties. She received several awards both at
home and abroad for her exhibition curation and artistic creation. In 2010, she was recognized with
the 8th Taishin Arts Award for Visual Art. Born in Kaohsiung in 1966, Hsu died of illness in January
2013. Before she passed away, she donated the majority of her works to Kaohsiung Museum of
Fine Arts. This exhibition is held to commemorate this outstanding female artist who suffered a
premature death, showcasing her works from 2001 to 2013. This exhibition is the first and also
maybe the last of its kind to fully present Hsu’s works for viewers to appreciate her legacy in whole.

Kaohsiung Awards 2014
The annual Kaohsiung Awards attract many outstanding artists in Taiwan to contend for one of the highest honors in Taiwan’s

recognition locally and internationally. Therefore, the Kaohsiung Awards have been widely regarded by all the enthusiastic artists
as an important milestone in their artistic careers. The Kaohsiung Awards in 2014 attracted about
six hundred artists from every corner of Taiwan who submitted works. After rounds of careful

winners of “Excellent Work“ Award, three winners of Observer’s Award, and several winners
of Honorable Mention. The winning works demonstrate different levels of artistic strength and

Gallery for Citizens: Between Slow and Fast, Temporary and Eternal
Ming-Chueh Hung Exhibition
From his practice of abstract painting, Ming-Chueh Hung found a latent “stream of time” in which the sub-consciousness and
consciousness are intertwined to represent ever-changing phenomena in his works. Viewers
are compelled to find pauses in the fast-changing time and space depicted in his works and
slowly gaze at the seemingly familiar but strange images. In this process, there is a subtle tugof-war between fast (the works) and slow (the viewers), between speed and pause. This kind
of “slow vs. fast” contrast also echoes with the discussion of “tangible existence vs. intangible

The “soul” of a city is not defined by its glamorous, dazzling look, but by how its people live
their lives. By reviewing the historic images housed in the museum’s collection, visitors will
be able to see the evolution of Kaohsiung by examining the photographs of the labor workers
during each stage of Kaohsiung’s industrial development. They will be able to witness how the
ancestors of Kaohsiung battled through the challenges of life in their journey of survival.

After being forcefully inducted as a soldier into war in 14th century Japan, his wife and mother remain living in a swamp. They eke out their living
by ambushing worn-out warriors, killing them and selling their belongings to a greedy merchant. The woman comes to mistrust her daughter-inlaw who has coupled up with a deserter, and begins to wear a facial mask she has taken from a slain samurai. Soon the mask will not come off
again. In this disguise she is at first taken for a demon by her daughter.

After 3 years with his brand new work, Lars von Trier brings the audience a stunning and lustful work – Nymphomaniac. By confronting
the deepest lust inside human directly, the explosive story brings the critics and audience to this sexual feast. The film is full of taboos that
will blow away the entire righteous moral disguise. It is also a milestone of Taiwan’s film censor history that allows the very first uncensored
version to be screened in the whole Asia.

If we have wings, why don’t we fly?
Nymphomaniac is the wild and poetic story of a woman’s journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the main character, the self-diagnosed
nymphomaniac, Joe. On a cold winter’s evening the old, charming bachelor, Seligman, finds Joe beaten up in the alley. He brings her home to his flat
where he cares for her wounds while asking her about her life. He listens intently as Joe over the next 8 chapters recounts the lushy branched-out
and multifaceted story of her life, rich in association and interjecting incidents.
※Due to the length of the film, it will be screened in two volumes and the ticket has to be purchased separately. (Vol. I is 118 mins, Vol. II is 123 mins.)

"Crystal Boys" makes its Chinese stage debut. With virtual
and real scenes intertwining, they personify sinful sons'
drifting and yearning. In addition to its dramatic tension, the
director also adopts symbolic body movements and dance to
insightfully portray the characters and project poetic, pensive
sentiments.

2013 was the year of Taiwanese films. Taiwanese audiences no longer go to the cinema to merely support Taiwanese films but for the good
quality of the films. However, besides many great Taiwanese films, there are other Taiwanese films that can be either screened shortly in the
cinema or not be screened due to lack of resource. Therefore, the KFA has started to screen Taiwanese films regularly since 2011, with hope
to provide a platform for Taiwanese films to the local audiences.
