S P I K E Newsletter of the Ottawa Orchid Society www.ottawaorchidsociety.com May 2016 [email protected] May Program [email protected] Past President [email protected] Secretary 613-722-6738 [email protected] Cana Balay 613-523-6767 [email protected] André Couture 613-233-7335 [email protected] [email protected] This May, the Society will host Calvin Wong of Tropical Garden Orchids from Vancouver http:// www.tgorchids.com/. He will present Cymbidium sub-genus Jensoa (Asian cymbidiums)-- species, cultivation and hybrids. Calvin is currently the President of the Canadian Orchid Congress, an AOS accredited judge with the Pacific Northwest Judging Centre, and Director of the Vancouver Orchid Society. Prior to relocating to Vancouver in 2011, Calvin was an active member of SOOS and the Toronto Judging Center of the AOS. Calvin travels around North America for various speaking engagements and shows. He also travels extensively around the world to participate in orchid shows as well as observing orchids in-situ. Calvin specializes in Neofinetia falcata, a charming Japanese species with a long history of cultivation. (more about our speaker on page 3) [email protected] There will be no ORCHIDS 101 this month. Publicity Karina Isert 613-729-0175 [email protected] May is our last meeting for this current season. Next year’s program is being finalized and will be published later this summer. [email protected] Joyce Medcalf 613-659-2760 [email protected] 1 President’s Message Hi Everyone, I am pleased to report that we had a very successful show this year, with a total of 2,253 visitors over the two days. Our vendors were extremely happy and several of them were very nearly sold out by the end of Sunday. Our vendor from Taiwan (Ching Hua) was so pleased that he has already reserved a table for the 2017 show, something that has never happened before! A big Thank-You to the Show Committee for all your hard work, and to all the volunteers who made the Show such a big success. Our society is very lucky to have so many people willing to pitch in, and it really makes the difference. During the show I heard from several other societies that are not so fortunate and are struggling to find enough people to keep their shows going. And of course it is the profit from the Show that allows the society to bring in world class speakers during the rest of the season. Our new location at the RA Centre worked out really well and we received excellent support from the staff for the setup, catering, etc. Thanks to Shelley Carbonetto, our contact there, for all the arrangements and I am happy to say that we have already been able to reserve the RA for our 2017 and 2018 shows. Of course there are a few details we will try to improve for next year, but these are in the nature of fine tuning rather than major changes. Our speaker in May will be Calvin Wong of Tropical Gardens Orchids, who will give us a talk entitled “Cymbidium subgenus Jensoa (Asian cymbidiums) -- species, cultivation and hybrids”. Calvin is also the president of the COC, and this should be a very interesting meeting. I hope to see you there. Having killed his first orchid (a white phalaenopsis) in lightning speed, Calvin did not accept defeat and started to research how to successfully grow orchids. Little did he know what he got himself into. Professionally, Calvin held various leadership positions with the Federal Government of Canada throughout his career. He currently holds the position as Director in a Federal department under the Public Safety Portfolio and was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2014 for his contribution. Vice President Wanted for 2016-2017 Dave Cooper needs a second-in-command, someone who would like to take on the role of Vice President. Duties are not onerous: a willingness to run the occasional meeting when Dave has to be away on business and to set a schedule for the out-of-town shows the OOS attends each year (guidance will be provided). This could be an exciting opportunity to get involved in the Society and to donate your time and energy to a good cause and have a lot of fun at the same time. Interested? Please call Dave Cooper at 613-256-2653 or e-mail Dave at [email protected]. The term is one year. Jean Hollebone Montreal Judging Centre The Judging Centre will meet on May 21st at the Montreal Botanical Garden. Members are invited to attend. Judging usually starts around 12:30 p.m. Diane Aubrey & Masa Matsuo receive plants from Maria Martins for the OOS Exhibit (photo by Arlene Lang) Mélodie Courchesne, Angèle Biljan and Roy John help out at the OOS Show Table (photo by Janet Lang) 3 Toronto Artistic Orchid Association (TAOA) On April 9-10, the Society participated at the TAOA annual orchid show. We take this opportunity to thank members who supplied plants for this show, namely: Angèle Biljan (3), Marcel Carrière (2), Janet Johns (2) and Maria Martins (3). Our participation was a success and the following plants were awarded. This success is also a reflection of our participating members’ dedication and support to our Society. The exhibit placed 2nd in the 6-15 Plant Display Class and 3rd for the Visiting Society Class. Thank you to those dedicated Ottawa orchid growers who shared their orchids for this display. This year’s show was very successful and we would like to say a big thank-you to all the Show Committee members and volunteers who worked so hard to make everything flow smoothly. Being the first year, of course there are a few things that we could have done better, and I have been collecting ideas and comments from the Show Committee which we will try to include next year. But overall, we were very pleased and we heard a lot of positive comments from the vendors and the exhibitors alike. One vendor (Ching Hua, from Taiwan) was so pleased that he has already booked his table for next year! This is a new record for us!! We had a total of about 2,250 visitors over the two days and this was an impressive number especially considering the warm sunny weather we had that weekend. It was about 400 more than last year and most people brought in a coupon, so the publicity was extremely effective. Thanks again to all involved in spreading the word, posting on Facebook and other internet sites, putting up signs, etc. From the rough numbers, we estimate we made close to $8,000 profit, though of course we will need to wait until we have the final numbers from Doug to be sure. This is a record for any show since I (Dave) have been involved (longer than I like to admit!), and I am very happy that the RA Centre seems to be a good home for us in the coming years. Thanks again to Janet, our Co-Chair, and to all committee members and volunteers, and I hope you enjoyed the show as much as I did. We would be lost without you! Dave Cooper and Janet Johns Co-Chairs REMINDER If you posted street signs please remember to bring them in to the May meeting so they can be saved till next year. If it is more convenient for you, they can be dropped off into the carport at 1176 Castle Hill Crescent just off Maitland. Many thanks to those who have already returned signs. They seem to have stood up well and can be reused next year. Jean Hollebone VENDORS’ AREA… WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES! The date of their peak blooming is announced on the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority web site http://mvc.on.ca/places-to-see/purdon/ where there are also explicit driving directions from Ottawa. If you go, and it is quite a show, park in the second or lower parking lot. There are picnic tables so you can enjoy a brought-along lunch but the nearest store is in nearby MacDonalds Corners about 8 km away. Alternately you can also visit Wheelers Maple Sugar Farm which is close to MacDonalds Corners and well sign-posted. It features the Maple Heritage Museum which is very interesting and has a restaurant serving pancakes and farm-made sausages from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., seven days a week. Also, gas up before you go, as there are no gas stations after Lanark. (Look for the memorial plaque to my mother Dr. Elizabeth Arnason, a Carleton University professor who loved Purdon and was a life-long supporter of the fen.) Jean Hollebone Annual Native Plant Sale at Fletcher Wildlife Garden http://www.ofnc.ca/fletcher/index.php#.Vy5_DY-cHIU Philip Fry plans to be at the Fletcher Wildlife Gardens sale as usual this year - and will have some Lady's Slippers, mostly the Cypripedium parviflorum and Cyp. pubescens, and perhaps a couple of Reginae as well. He wrote the following to me in his email: The plants have "shown" growth quite a bit later this year than normal, but they look very good. I hope that they will be at least in bud for the sale - who knows what the weather will do? My prices run from $25 for single stems to $35 for double stem Yellows (even though the prices on the internet for the Parviflorum are usually higher than the Pubescens, maybe because it is rarer); the Reginae start at about $45. If you should hear of people planning to come to the sale, you might mention that stock is always limited, so come as early as possible.
