History Lessons
Prior to writing this foreword, I was reading a letter dated
October 12th 1926 sent by Reuben Heaton’s son Ralph to a
customer in New Zealand. In it Ralph is apologising for the
late delivery of some heavy Devon minnow lures and the
corresponding trouble this has caused. It seems that in a bid
to maintain the good name of Reuben Heaton (as per the
quote from our founder opposite) an urgent order for Devons
had been hastily assembled and shipped out, but despite best
endeavours the ship sank en route to the customer. Perhaps
those heavy Devons were a little too heavy.
Compounded by delays in shipping reports, letters of
communication and so on, the above situation dragged on for
months. This scenario is in stark contrast to the pace of modern
communications today. Not only can we see how dramatically
things have changed, but also how much we take the current
pace of life for granted.

The last two or three years have seen significant changes
in the angling industry, in terms of how we sell and the
communication tools that we use. Continuous development
of both communications and infrastructure to maintain that
all important good name means that Reuben Heaton now has
the power to tweet, like and Skype with customers wherever
they may be. As a company, we have diversified our core
product range, created new brands, taken on distribution of
other brands and more recently appointed dedicated agents
for all Reuben Heaton brands in the UK. In doing so we have
repositioned ourselves in the marketplace and established new
customers around the globe.
As ever, we have new products to unveil during the coming
year and no doubt new challenges ahead as well. Hopefully
we will continue to dodge the sinking ships along the way and
provide you with an ever-improving service. Thank you for your

Specimen Hunter Scale
The “original” specialist anglers scale that has
continued to set the benchmark for all specimen style
scales since its arrival in 1988. The Specimen Hunter is
a high performance scale specifically designed with the
modern specialist angler in mind. With an accuracy of
over one part in 500, the Specimen Hunter is a top class
scale used by competition and specimen anglers alike.
All models in the Specimen Hunter range come with
a lens mounted scale light that provides a waterproof
maintenance free light source, which illuminates the
whole dial area during night operation. The scale light
also has a hands-free auto-off function, ensuring that the
dial remains illuminated during the weighing process.

Reuben Heaton has been involved in angling
competitions since the 1930s, when the first
all-aluminium match scales were developed
by the company. Since then, Heatons have
supplied competition scales to angling events
worldwide.
The 4000 Series Fishery Match Scale has been
engineered specifically for angling competitions,
and has the accuracy of the original large
diameter match scales within the more compact
4000 Series body.
Dual revolution dial indicators ensure accurate
readings are easily taken, and the weights can
be viewed by on-looking competitors. With a
wide range of division sizes, there are models to
cater for big match weights on modern managed
fisheries as well as small weights found on
canals and in winter leagues. Available in

A bespoke product designed for the angler who desires
something that little bit different. A direct descendant
of the tubular balances first made by Reuben Heaton
before the turn of the century, the latest Sportsman’s
Balance brings together the traditional qualities of a
hand made product, with high tech production features
such as laser cut graduations through the scale body
that will never wear out. A high quality British made
product and size for size the most compact tubular
balance available.
Manufactured throughout from corrosion resistant
material, the Sportsman’s Balance features a high quality
stainless steel body and plated main spring. The laser
cut, easy to read graduations, good tare/zero range and
integral weigh bar make the Sportsman’s Balance a joy
to use.
The Sportsman’s Balance comes complete with a
protective leather pouch, manufactured in the traditional
“leather quarter” district of Walsall, Birmingham. All
other components used to make a Sportsman’s Balance
are either made in-house at our factory or sourced locally
in the Midlands, including the presentation box which
includes some history about the origins of the product
and the company.

British Made Fly Reels
Heatons has a long and distinguished history of reel making reaching
back over 150 years, to the founding of the company by keen angler
Reuben George Heaton in 1857.
Along with reels, Heatons produced most items of fishing tackle
at one time or another for most of the well known angling names.
Reels, rods and other tackle items were exported around the world
in great numbers, with Heatons claiming an annual production
exceeding 30,000 reels a year around the turn of the century.
Reels continued to be the mainstay of the company’s production
until the late 1970s, eventually giving way to other tackle products
and more specifically match scales production, which began
in the late 1930s. Now after an absence of more than 40 years,
commercial reel production at the UK factory has recommenced
with the introduction of the Model 38 fly reel.

The Model 38 Fly Reel
The new Model 38 Fly Reel takes its name from its
predecessor, a highly successful alloy fly reel design
which Heatons produced in different versions from
the early 1900s right through to the late 1940s.
One of the earliest aluminium production fly reels, the
Model 38 proved a very successful design for Heatons.
Light and yet robust, the Model 38 had a central spool
tensioning drag system as well as a spring pawl allowing
anglers to vary the amount of drag that could be applied
to the spool over a very large range.
The success of the Model 38 was based on its no
nonsense design, which proved to be ultimately reliable,
simple to operate and easy to maintain. Such was the
appeal of the Model 38 design that it sold all over the
world in great quantities and was adopted as the reel
of choice by many of the large angling brands.
The ethos of the original Model 38 has been continued
in the new Model 38 design with the same ultimate goal
- a reliable reel that performs consistently and is easy to
maintain and use. In addition, the new Model 38
design carries forward many of the classic lines that made
the original 38 a joy to look at, as well as to fish with.

Fly Reel
For stopping power, the Model 38 features a multi layer
stainless clutch drag system developed to give a smooth
and faultlessly simple and efficient operation, over a
wide range of settings.
Every component of the Model 38 Fly Reel is
engineered to be robust and reliable, giving longevity
and performance under pressure. Machined from
solid aluminium bar stock, the Model 38 frame and
spool are anodised to saltwater specification, and are
engineered for strength as well as having classical looks.
All reels are fitted as standard with medium arbour
spool and nickel silver fittings. Conversion from left
to right hand retrieve is achieved by simply releasing
and turning over the drive hub. Each reel comes
complete with a protective neoprene pouch.

The RH Range
Heatons previously made fishing lures, principally Devon
Minnows and spoon baits, throughout much of their
long history of tackle manufacture. These lures were
made and sold to the trade for a long period from the
mid 1800s through to the late 1930s, and now that lure
manufacturing tradition is being re-born with the latest
RH range of baits, lures and accessories, which continue
to be manufactured in the UK at the Market Bosworth
factory. All aspects of manufacture, including moulding,
painting, wire forming and assembly operations, are
carried out in-house and lures can be supplied in bulk
or retail format. Each lure is balanced and colours are
matched and checked for consistency, ensuring the
finished baits remain faithful to traditional patterns
where required.

Standard Devon Minnow
The classic minnow design and one of the
earliest forms. Tried and tested for generations,
a very effective salmon bait in most conditions.
Griffiths minnows are cast in one piece, and
will not split or crack even in very low water
temperatures. Balanced to ensure correct
presentation is achieved, both Standard and
Oval minnows are available in floating and
sinking varieties, complete with mounts.

Griffiths Oval Sprat
A fast spinning bait with an excellent flash
midway between the faster standard round
bodied Devon’s and slower flat sided sprat style
baits. Designed to spin in the opposite direction
to the Standard Devon bait. An outstanding
salmon lure. Comes complete with mount.

A hybrid based on two very old styles of
minnow bait which used to be made of
leather. These baits have a heavy brass head
and soft silicone vibrating tail. This bait swims

Flying C’s
One of the most prolific of salmon and sea trout
baits, as well as an all round bait for other
predator fishing. Available in a wide range of
weights and colours, with combinations suitable
for most water conditions. In addition to the
range of silicone colours, different blade colour
combinations are also available.

Killer Plug
A deadly salmon bait that has been around
for years. Traditionally used for “Harling” on
Scottish salmon rivers, where the lure is fished
from a boat rather than the bank. Also ideal for
casting, especially in windy conditions where the
compact heavier body casts well. A good plug
with diving and wiggle action. Comes complete
with mount.
