Greetings from the
NIC Foundation and Alumni Association
Our region is constantly changing. North Idaho College changes
to match. In the 1970s, there were no personal computers, cell
phones, or the Internet. Cars had no computers and machine
tools were controlled by hand cranks. Today’s students require
education and training that prepares them for work in a new
world from the last generation... a computerized world.
The NIC Foundation, and the donors who partner with us,
provide the extra margin of excellence needed to ensure NIC
students have the opportunity to improve their skills for an everchanging job market. As a volunteer, business owner, and longtime resident, I invite
you to make the best investment for our community—invest in NIC.
Steve Meyer, NIC Foundation President
I’ve been involved with NIC for more than 36 years, from
attending as a student to having the privilege of retiring as a
longtime employee. When I was asked to volunteer with the NIC
Alumni Association, it was natural to say, “Yes!” The NIC Alumni
Association provides former students a chance to stay involved
with the NIC family.
When you look back and remember the experiences and
connections you had while attending North Idaho College, the
NIC Alumni Association can provide a chance to continue those
along with remaining active with the college. I invite everyone to join in and remain a
part of your college.
Dean Bennett, NIC Alumni Association President
A Valuable Community Partner
Higher education as well as career and technical training are essential components
to ensure economic vitality. Since 1933, North Idaho College has served as
this region’s higher education and training partner. NIC provides 42 accredited
professional-technical education programs and 44 college transfer programs.

The spirit of entrepreneurship
Jerry and Katie Brown came to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho after his service as a pilot in
World War II to open the Ben Franklin 5 & 10 Department Store in 1945.
As part of the “Greatest Generation,” the couple brought their Midwest sensibilities
and high energy from Kansas and Nebraska to begin their new life in Coeur d’Alene.

FLEXIBLE
Part time, full time, anytime
Housed at the corner of Third and Sherman Avenue (the current site of Wells Fargo
Bank), their Ben Franklin Store embodied the entrepreneurial spirit and determination
of other post-war families spread out across the nation to begin life anew.
AFFORDABLE
Save money, gas, and time
It is with this entrepreneurial spirit in mind that their five sons, Jim, Dick, Bill, Tom,
and Jerry endowed a scholarship through the NIC Foundation in memory of their
parents.
The Ben Franklin Young Entrepreneurs Scholarship provides scholarships for students
enrolled in the NIC Business Entrepreneurship Program who are seeking business
knowledge and skills to start a business.
To learn more about establishing an endowment, contact the NIC Foundation Office at
(208) 769-5978 or email [email protected].
One of my future goals is to open a
coffee shop. My living situation requires
me to work while attending school so
this scholarship allows me to work less
and have more time with my children.

President’s Message
North Idaho
College aspires to
provide exceptional
educational
experiences for
our students
and engage our
community in
meaningful and
diverse ways.
Building the Future
Today’s students... tomorrow’s workforce
As such, NIC has created a number
of new programs that meet the
needs of business and industry
within the region and promote
retention and transferability
opportunities for our students to
four-year institutions.
North Idaho College is in the
business of changing lives and
building futures. The college is
committed to this mission through
student-centered programs, active
community partnerships, and fiscally
responsible operations.
As the economy of our region
has changed, we must be laserfocused on the goal of preparing
our students for today’s jobs… and
tomorrow’s workforce needs. A
highly skilled, adaptive workforce is
a key ingredient in supporting our
regional employers and in retaining
a vibrant generation of employees.
The Career and Technical Education
(CTE) project will help meet this
goal. Strategically located on the
Rathdrum Prairie, the CTE Facility
will house several NIC career and
technical programs. To learn more
about the project, please see the
adjacent article.
We invite you to partner with us as
we chart a brighter and achievable
future for our students and their
families. Thank you for investing
in North Idaho College and the NIC
Foundation.
Joe Dunlap, Ed.D.
NIC President
A groundbreaking ceremony for the NIC Career and Technical Education (CTE) Facility was held on
June 17, 2015.
NIC is committed to training highly skilled employees to meet regional workforce
demands of current and emerging industries. The new North Idaho College Career
and Technical Education (CTE) Facility will ensure that NIC is able to deliver the
advanced technical and skill training needed by students and regional employers.
Scheduled for completion by July 2016, construction is already underway on
40 acres of land owned by NIC on the Rathdrum Prairie next to the Kootenai
Technical Education Campus. The CTE Facility will house several NIC career and
technical programs that are currently in temporary and/or tight quarters. The
following programs are intended to move into the facility: Automotive Technology,
Collision Repair Technology, Computer-Aided Design Technology (architectural and
mechanical), Diesel Technology, Industrial Mechanic/Millwright, Machining and CNC
Technology, and Welding Technology.
As more technology is introduced in the workplace to improve productivity,
the skillset needed of the workforce is rapidly changing. North Idaho College is
responding to the changing demands of today’s students and regional employers. At
the same time, the state of Idaho is reducing its support to higher education. NIC’s
current state funding allocation is the same as it was in 2002. When you factor for
inflation from 2002 to 2015, the state funding for NIC has declined by 32 percent.
Despite reduced state funding, NIC has found grant and private funding to meet
regional industry demand and has created new opportunities such as the Business
Entrepreneurship Program to foster small business development, the NIC at
Sandpoint Science Lab to enable NIC to deliver the entire associate’s degree in the
northernmost counties, and Centers of Excellence for Aerospace, Wood Products
and Health Care. NIC is deeply committed to partnering with business and industry to
train the next generation of regional employees while maintaining exceptional quality
programs that best meet student and community needs.
If you would like to be involved with the Career and Technical Education Facility,
contact the NIC Foundation Office at (208) 769-5978 or email [email protected].

NIC Alumni Association announces the
2015 outstanding alumni award recipients
Ron Jacobson has been honored with the 2015 Alumni
of the Year Award. Jacobson graduated from NIC in 1976
before going on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the
University of Idaho. He is a graduate of the Pacific Coast
Banking School and has been in banking since 1978.
Jacobson currently serves as the Mayor for the City of Post
Falls and took office in January 2014. He previously served
as a Post Falls City Council member for five years as well
as serving in multiple public service positions including the
North Idaho College Foundation Board. Mayor Jacobson is
a third generation resident of Kootenai County; he and his
wife Susan reside in Post Falls and have four children. As
mayor, Jacobson said he values the beauty of our region
and wants to preserve our recreational amenities while
working to strengthen the economic vitality of Post Falls.
Jon Totten earned the 2015 Honorary Alumnus of the
Year Award. Totten may be best known for his pivotal
contributions to North Idaho College’s Outdoor Pursuits
program for nearly 10 years; however, to those he
worked with, he is also known as an innovative leader
who takes teamwork to a different level. Totten’s ability
to motivate people and bring them together has allowed
him to accomplish untold milestones for NIC and the
community. Totten has a big heart with a service mindset,
serving on multiple college committees and mentoring
students.

Student Scholarships
Your dollars at work
The NIC Foundation Scholarship Program provides access to education for hundreds
of students while decreasing the students’ need for taking on debt.
Through the NIC Foundation Scholarship Program, we were able to assist 1,104
students during the 2014-2015 academic year. Support for scholarships continues to
be a high priority as we are only able to assist approximately 10 percent of students
enrolled in credit, dual credit, and non-credit programs with scholarship support.
DIRECT IMPACT OF SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT FOR NIC STUDENTS
“I’m determined to earn both an
associate’s and bachelor’s degree
in nursing and hope to eventually
manage an assisted living facility.
I’m extremely grateful for this
scholarship.”

Thank You! NIC Employee
support matters!
Faculty Assembly Chair Erin Davis (left) and Staff Assembly Chair Carol
Jones challenged each other to a friendly competition.
The employees of North Idaho College continue to
demonstrate their commitment to education through our
Employee Giving Campaign. Overall participation in the
Campaign reached an impressive 71 percent in 2015. The
NIC family understands the value of education and has
generously increased its investment in our students each
year. Additionally, NIC employees dedicate countless hours
volunteering within the greater community.
MAKING AN IMPACT
North Idaho College makes an important contribution
to the social, cultural, and economic quality of life in the
community. Like public institutions everywhere, NIC must
look beyond its traditional sources of support. Property
taxes, state appropriations, and student tuition must be
supplemented with private donations if the college is to
maintain the level of educational excellence the people of
North Idaho deserve.
I chose to attend NIC because
of its reputable professionaltechnical programs. Receiving this
scholarship meant everything to me.

NIC Foundation and Alumni Year in Review
Anne Lebsack creates a lasting legacy
It’s a gift that will keep on giving.
Annette “Anne” Lebsack was an instructor in
the NIC Nursing Department from 1981 to
1989. Though she passed away in 2013, she
will continue to support the education of future
nurses for years to come through the Anne and
Ray Lebsack Memorial Endowment, funded
through her estate.
Anne earned a master’s degree in nursing from
the University of California in San Francisco. She
dedicated her life to teaching nursing at colleges
across Idaho, including NIC. Her real interest was
in mental health nursing, which eventually led her
to Eastern State Hospital, where she worked as a
clinical nurse specialist.
She married Raymond “Ray” Lebsack in 1994. Ray
was a retired Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force.
He received his doctorate in law from Gonzaga
University and worked as a lawyer in the Spokane
area. Both Anne and Ray loved the outdoors, and
they enjoyed nothing so much as fishing together.
Loren Ferguson, Anne’s cousin, established the
scholarship in the couple’s memory. Though he
and Anne lived half a country away from each
other while they were growing up, the two had
a close bond. Anne was Loren’s only cousin. He
still remembers visiting her in California—a long
way from his home in North Dakota—and the
summers spent exploring San Francisco when
they were young.

VIPs enjoy private
reception
They remained close as adults, especially after the
death of Anne’s husband, Ray, in 2012. As heir to her estate, Loren wanted to honor
one of Anne’s last wishes: to contribute to a scholarship for nurses.
“She enjoyed nursing and she enjoyed teaching others correct nursing procedures,”
Loren said.
He contacted the North Idaho College Foundation about using a portion of Anne’s
estate to set up a scholarship, and from there, he said, the process was “seamless.”
The Anne and Ray Lebsack Memorial Scholarship will support NIC students pursuing a
degree in nursing and health-related careers in perpetuity.
Create your lasting legacy
Your support of North Idaho College doesn’t have to come all at once. There are
many ways to combine your generosity to support educational excellence today
and provide support that will continue in the future, also known as a blended gift.

To create a blended gift, select a way to give today, such as contributing to
our annual fund; then, choose to create a deferred gift by naming the NIC
Foundation as a beneficiary of your will, trust, insurance policy, or retirement
plan.

Grand Prize $300,000 home
2016 raffle home
The 2016 Really BIG Raffle will feature a grand prize home that
fronts Syringa Park in Post Falls. This park side location was
a crowd pleaser in the past, and we expect tickets to sell fast
again this year.
Syringa Park is a seven-acre park that includes a playground,
picnic area, and basketball and volleyball courts. The home will
be a three-bedroom, two-bath rancher with a large great room
that overlooks the park. EnergyStar-certified and loaded with
upgrades, this will be a great home to win on July 13, 2016.
Visit www.nic.edu/rbr or call (208) 769-3271 for more
information on the 23rd annual Really BIG Raffle.
The NIC Foundation’s annual Really BIG Raffle sold out in record
time this year on May 31, beating the previous sell-out record
by two weeks! The secondary waterfront location of the grand
prize home proved too good of an opportunity for supporters
to pass up.
The home winners drawn on July 8, 2015 were Judy and John
Felice. Judy was born and raised in the Wallace area and learned
about the fundraiser just a couple of years ago. She credits her
brother Ray, who is an NIC alumnus, for being her good luck
charm on the night of the drawing.
