This Month: Staff’s Perspective—1-2 Spotlight On: Consistory—3 Consistory News & Notes—3 FRC in Ministry—3-4 FRC in Mission—5 FRC in Fellowship—6 FRC News—7 Appreciation—7 In Memory—8-9 Opportunities to Serve—10-12 Birthdays & Anniversaries—13 FRC Calendar—14 Prayer Calendar—15 Introducing JOSIE MOSS... We are over-the-moon excited to welcome Josie Moss to the staff of FRC as our part-time Coordinator in Children’s Ministries! As we always do with new team members, we introduce her to you through a little informal interview… Pastor Tim 1. Let's get the Dutch Bingo out of the way first: Tell us a little bit about your personal history, career journey to this point, and how you may or may not be related to Seine Bolks, the first pastor of FRC. I grew up not too far from here in Hull. My love for the outdoors led me to get a degree in Landscape Design and then after a few years of designing, we decided as poor newly weds I needed a more steady income and started at Siouxland Travel. We lived here a year, took a year hiatus from NW Iowa all the way in Eastern First Reformed Church 420 Central Avenue NW Orange City, Iowa 51041 712-737-4909 www.frcoc.org [email protected] Iowa, and then came back to Orange City after Derrick accepted the position of Head Athletic Trainer at Northwestern College (go Raiders!) and I got my old job back at Siouxland Travel. My parents are Ted and Lois Salazar of Hull. Most of the Dutch bingo comes from my mom's side as she is daughter of Jim and Betty Sikma, cousin to Bev Vande Griend, and an aunt to Ryan Dokter through her first marriage. Unless Bev and Ryan know something I don't, I think the closest relation to a Bolks is very distantly through the Moss side, but I believe that is the Henry Bolks family. My favorite thing about moving to Orange City has been discovering how many "new" relatives I've acquired over the last few years! 2. You've been involved in all kinds of ministries at FRC over the past months and years. Share with us a little bit about how you and Derrick have been plugged in. Derrick and I both fell in love with FRC through the incredible opportunities of worship God provides in this church. I obviously love to be involved in praise and worship and Children's Ministries, but more recently, we've been really plugged in through our small group. We love the more intimate environment, and the chance that we Glorify God Know Christ Make Him Known 11 Page Page get to connect with members of the church in all different stages of life. We've developed great friendships through small group, and have grown so much in our relationship with Christ over the last year because of it. (continued) Staff’s Perspective (continued) 3. What will your new responsibilities at FRC include? I will be serving as leader of Preschool - Grade 5 Sunday School, Children's Worship, and the 3-5 Kids Connection and I am SO excited to start working with the children of FRC and developing their relationship in Christ! 4. Speak about your sense of call to work with kids. How has God laid that vision on your heart? I.Love.Kids. I always have! Throughout my entire adulthood, God has been working in my heart and developing my passion for Children's Ministry through many years of working Vacation Bible Schools, volunteering in Sunday School programs, and most recently, getting to know the youth of FRC through Cherub Choir- and boy do I love those kids! It wasn't until the the start of the new year that God hit me over the head with His will for my life. Life is short and I want to spend my time on this earth making an impact and planting seeds in the hearts of our children so they can have the all consuming amounts of joy that I feel when I learn about God's promise of salvation to His children. 5. What does the opportunity to lead in an entirely new ministry facility mean for you? The support of Project 78 has made it evident to me that our church places high value on Children's Ministry and community outreach. I am both excited and incredibly honored to be able to be part of the great things God is doing in our church! I am so thankful for the amount of trust that our congregation has in me to be able to work with the leaders in our church to shape the new ministry facility into something amazing. 6. Do you have an opinion on pickles wrapped in dried beef? People who know me know that my love for pickles goes beyond the occasional appetizer or veggie platter. I've won many bets by drinking a jar of pickle juice, and if given the decision I would choose to eat pickles over just about any other food. The fact that someone so cleverly put the combination of dill pickles, cream cheese, and dried beef together is the greatest idea ever introduced to the food industry. P.S. I have a really good pickle dip recipe if anyone wants to take it a step further. A concert of Favorite Anthems Sunday, May 1st 5:30 PM The Sanctuary Choir will be presenting a Concert of Favorite Anthems. The over-arching theme for the concert is found in the text of the first anthem the choir presents, “Jesus is the Living Stone”. All the anthems used in the service come from the images and Biblical truths in the text. This will be the final appearance of the Sanctuary Choir for this school year. 2 Page Spotlight On: Consistory / Consistory News & Notes / FRC in Ministry In an attempt to acquaint the congregation with our church leaders, we will give a brief profile of one elder and one deacon each month. This month we feature…. Elder Craig Pennings—”Craig is in his 2nd year as Elder and serves on the Gathering Team. He works at Diamond Vogel Paints and is the Purchasing Manager there; he is married to Leah (Transitional Kindergarten teacher @ MOC-FV) and they have been blessed with 3 children – Juliana, Colin, and Carter. “ Deacon Grant Hegstad—”My name is Grant Hegstad, and soon I will begin my third year as a deacon. I also serve on the Spiritual Vitality Ministry Team. My wife Jen and I both teach in the MOC-Floyd Valley School District. She teaches 3rd grade at Hospers Elementary, and I teach Special Education and coach football at the high school. We have one daughter, Megan, who will turn one this summer.” Consistory News & Notes—March Membership Requests: Request for Transfer: Dorothy Karssen, to American Reformed Church Thursday, May 5th 12 Noon-1 PM City Hall Community Room (lower level) A nation that prays is a nation that is blessed. On Wednesday, August 3rd, the church bus will be taking us to the Women’s Luncheon at Arrowwood Resort at Okoboji! This 1 PM luncheon is part of the Okoboji Bible & Missionary Conference. The Speaker is Tammy Trent. Tammy Trent was a familiar voice on Christian radio in the ‘90s, but on September 11, 2001, her songs ceased for a time. Tammy stepped away from the spotlight to heal after the tragic death of her husband while on a mission trip. One year later she returned as a featured speaker at the Extraordinary Women’s Conference and was also asked to share the Women of Faith platform for 4 years. During that time, Tammy also became a featured speaker, singer and author for The Revolve Tour for teen girls for 2 years. Her personal story of tragedy, restoration, healing and hope crosses over generational lines and her music inspires all ages, bringing strength and renewed joy. The cost is $25, which includes the luncheon ticket and bus ride. We will leave church at 10:45 AM and should be back in Orange City by 5:30 PM. Please reserve your spot by June 1st, by contacting the church office, so tickets can be ordered. (This event sells out quickly.)
