Listed as the 8-5 morning-line choice, Racing Hill starts from post 1 in the first of two eliminations (Race 8), each of which are filled to the gill with three horses from the locallybased Ron Burke barn. American Passport is down as a 7-2 outsider from post 5 in the second elim (Race 9). If 11 or fewer pacers had been entered, then the Adios would have been raced on July 30 as a single dash. Twelve splits the race into two eliminations. The top four finishers from both eliminations plus the fifth-place finisher with the highest lifetime purse earnings will advance to the $400,000 Adios final on “I’d be disappointed if July 30. he didn’t perform, but Racing Hill has been imI’ve been disappointed pressive thus far in 2016, five times this year.” capturing the $500,000 –Myron Bell about Max Hempt Memorial and American Passport finishing second in both the $1 million Pepsi North America Cup and the $732,050 Crawford Farms Meadowlands Pace. On the flip side, American Passport comes into the Adios elims winless in five starts, a record that both surprises and disappoints his connections. “He does have talent, and if he didn’t it would be a different story,” said Brittany Farms racing manager Myron Bell, who also shares ownership (with his wife, Stephanie) as Riverview Racing. “But this horse has tremendous ability. Hopefully he will bring his ‘A game.’ I’d be disappointed if he didn’t perform, but I’ve been disappointed five times this year.” Bred by Brittany Farms, American Passport was purchased as a yearling by trainer Tony Alagna for $29,000. Ownership in the American Ideal colt now includes Brittany Farms, Alagna Racing, Riverview Racing and Jodi Siamis. As a freshman American Passport won three times in 11 starts, with those victories coming back-to-back-to-back in early fall. After finishing second by a nose in his Metro elimination, American Passport drew post 10 in the $513,750 final and finished ninth after never being able to get into contention. American Passport has a pair of 1:51.3 qualifying victories this year, but he’s done no better than second in a Somebeachsomewhere division in his five pari-mutuel attempts. The colt comes into the Adios with just $15,188 in earnings, which comes into play for major stakes that are limited to the richest entrants. “Not only has he not performed, he doesn’t have enough earnings to be in some of the other events like the Cane or the Battle of the Brandywine. Unless he does something big in the Adios,” said Bell. Scott Zeron has been named to drive American Passport in the Adios elim, with the Meadowlands’ leading driver back in the bike after a driver switch had been made. Brian Sears directed American Passport to a sixth-place finish in a Hempt elim and then Tim Tetrick drove in a fifth-place outing in a July 1 overnight at the Big M. “We tried things,” Bell explained of the change in drivers. “We (he and Zeron) have a good relationship and he’ll be driving the horse for the rest of the year.” One of American Passport’s qualifying victories came last Saturday at the Meadowlands. With Zeron driving, American Passport paced a final quarter of :25.4 to rally from third for the victory. Bell said Alagna made an equipment change prior to the qualifier. “Tony’s made some bridle changes on him and he qualified super,” said Bell. “Scott never touched him and he was well in hand, but that was a qualifier.” Also on the elimination card are two divisions of the Pennsylvania Sires Stakes for 3-year-old filly pacers, with Pure Country and Darlinonthebeach squaring off in Race 4. But after attending a memorial service for Ryan, whose career in harness racing as an owner of The Meadows and amateur driver resulted in enshrinement in the sport’s Hall of Fame, Gillespie decided to get involved. Gillespie and trainer Mike Palone will send Rip This Joint to Saturday’s Adios eliminations. The gelding drew into the second of two $25,000 eliminations and will start from post six in a six-horse field. Dave Palone will be in the sulky. “This is the first time we’ve ever had a horse in the Adios,” said Gillespie, a 43-year-old resident of the Pittsburgh suburb of Upper St. Clair who races “I used to go to under the name Lone Wolf Stathe Adios as a ble. “It’s pretty big. I used to go kid.... It’s a fun to the Adios as a kid and sit over event and to have on the hillside for years and a horse in the years. I remember some great race just adds to races back in the day. It’s a fun the excitement.” event and to have a horse in the –Brian Gillespie race just adds to the excitement.” Gillespie is in the residential home construction business, as was his grandfather Ed—the founder of Ryan Homes. Gillespie had no expectations when he decided to buy racehorses, other than to have a good time. Among his other successful horses is Half Past Seven, who was the Meadows Standardbred Owners Association’s 2-year-old filly pacer of the year in 2014. “When my grandfather passed away, they did an event at The Meadows for him, a little memorial in the winner’s circle, and being down there brought back a lot of good memories,” Gillespie said. “I decided to buy a couple horses and have some fun with it. And we’ve had a lot of fun over the last couple years. We’ve had some pretty good horses. “(Rip This Joint) is not going to be the favorite, but you never know how things will shake out during a race,” Gillespie said. “It’s going to be fun. We live 20 minutes from the track and we’ll have a bunch of people there.” A son of Western Terror out of the stakes-winning mare Cheryl Hanover, Rip This Joint was purchased for $13,000 under the name Rose Run Reily at the 2014 Lexington Selected Sale. He was renamed by Gillespie, a Rolling Stones aficionado, after the group’s second song on the “Exile on Main Street” album. Gillespie often renames horses after songs by the band. “I’m a huge Rolling Stones fan,” Gillespie said. “They’ve got so many songs that could be great horse names; I figured we’d start naming some of the ones we buy. I just thought it would be fun. Some of my favorites were already used, but Rip This Joint was available and I thought it sounded pretty cool. And it’s a fantastic song.” Gillespie was happy to come away with Rip This Joint, especially since it seemed the hand of fate intervened. “It was kind of a fluke that we got him,” Gillespie said. “It was pouring down rain and a lot of people had already cleared out. Mike Palone was leaving the sale and as he was walking out he saw this horse walking into the ring. He decided to stick around; the horse looked so good he needed to bid on him. We got him for less than we ever expected, because he looked so good. We got him just by chance. I credit it to luck and to Mike.” Last year, Rip This Joint won two of 11 starts and earned $33,080. He had two wins and a second-place finish in his first three outings — all conditioned races — before heading on to the Pennsylvania Sires Stakes circuit. “We liked the horse early on, and we probably liked him too much,” Gillespie said. “In his third start he paced in (1):53.4 and we thought we had a sire stakes horse. He just got too tired last year chasing those horses. Our gut feeling was that we probably over-classified him and he wore down as the year went on.” This year, Rip This Joint has won five of 11 races and earned $53,112. He has competed mostly in the Pennsylvania Stallion Series and in conditioned races. He won in a career-best 1:51.2 on June 4 at The Meadows and heads to the Adios eliminations off a 1:52.1 victory on July 9 at The Meadows.—By Ken Weingartner/Harness Racing Communications Featuring Yearlings by Top US Stallions at: THE 2016 WINBAK F FARM A ARM YEARLINGS Goshen 9/18 Lexington 10/4-10/8 Harrisburg Select 11/7-11/9 Goshen Pacer Highlights #31, ROLLINLIKETHUNDER Lexington Pacer Highlights COURTLY CHOICE+ Harrisburg Pacer Highlights AMERICAN ASSASSIN+ CLASSY CHRIS+ #35, ROCK N ON SUNSHINE* DREAMER’S DELIGHT #51, FAST DATE KARA JOE DRINKA BEER #77, TRIPTIK TWO MR WIGGLESWORTH DUNE SPEED #99, MARVALOUS SONG NEWTON SAID SPEED TO MARKET #134, I GOT THE BOY THE BAY FRONT+ PARKAVENUEJULIEANN #135, ROLLING SEA+ WHEELS OF JUSTICE Harrisburg Trotter Highlights CREDIT LIST Goshen Trotter Highlights #47, NASHVILLE FLASH Lexington Trotter Highlights GALAHAD’S QUEST+ DAD’S RED BOW TIE #50, FAITHFUL FRAN+ ROLL SEVENS+ #146, JET FRAME HANDSOME DEVIL SUPREME SEVEN+ WANNA HALL #153, LUCKY TRAVEL WARRIOR’S REWARD + Stem cell collections available *Agent Horse Call C all 410.885.3059 to set an appointment to view yearlings. ® Garrett Bell, General Manager / James Ladwig, Yearling Manager 155 Yearling e Row, Chesapeake City, Maryland 21915 www.winbakfarm.com / / HarnessRacing Weekend Preview, 6 of 15 July 22, 2016 Wiggle It Jiggleit Favored In Gerrity www.harnessracing.com $260,000 JOE GERRITY JR. Zweig Memorial for the colts and two divisions for fillies. The races were split based on earnings, with the highestearning horses of 2016 going for the top purses and others competing in consolations. All of the races are certainly previews for the upcoming Hambletonian and Oaks, although Southwind Frank and Marion Marauder, who won the two divisions of the Stanley Dancer Memorial Trot at the Meadowlands last Saturday, were not eligible to the Zweig. The $300,000 event for the colts, Race 9, features Bar Hopping, the runner-up to Marion Marauder in the Dancer. Jimmy Takter trains Bar Hopping and considers him his top horse for this year’s Hambletonian. “He’s getting stronger every start,” Takter said of Bar Hopping, who took a mark of 1:52.1 at Pocono in winning an elimination for the Earl Beal Jr. Memorial. Bar Hopping will have the benefit of an inside post (3) for the Zweig. Bar Hopping started from post 9 in the Beal final and finished third and also had to start from post 9 in the Dancer Memorial. In the Dancer he was 5 ¼ lengths behind race leader Marion at the half and was beaten 2 ¼ lengths in the 1 1/8-mile race. While Takter has decided Bar Hopping could be a serious contender in the Hambletonian, other colts in the Zweig are still trying to prove themselves. One of those horses is Hititoutofthepark, who has won four of eight races this season, including three stakes. “I just don’t know if he’s fast enough to go with the top horses yet,” said John Butenschoen, who trains Hititoutofthepark and co-owns the horse with his partners in Give It A Shot Stable, VIP Internet Stable LLC and Kurt Welling. “He’s not a very big horse,” Butenshoen added, “and he’s still a ridgling.” Hititoutofthepark is a son of Yankee Glide and a full brother to Boots And Chains, a good trotter for Butenschoen in 2015. He will be driven in the Zweig by Corey Callahan, who drove him to wins in a Pennsylvania Sires Stakes and PA All Stars. They will start from post 3. In Hititoutofthepark’s last start before the Zweig, a July 8 overnight at the Meadowlands, John Campbell was his driver and they finished 6p5. That race was won by Marion Marauder but perhaps best remembered when the leading Jack Vernon broke stride in the homestretch and was taken into the safety lane before then veering back into competition and actually crossed the wire first. (Jack Vernon was entered in the Zweig and will start in a Zweig consolation (Race 3). “That was a tough 3-year-old open. That could have been a division of the Zweig,” noted Butenschoen. “Campbell was real happy with how he raced. We did race him a little conservatively (fourth-over in the third quarter). He said he had trot finishing, and it was good to see that.” The second of the Zweig consolations for the colts (Race 6) includes Brooklyn Hill, who has finished second to Southwind Frank twice this season and was purposely not entered in the Dancer. Also in the race is the fast Sutton 3, Q1:51.2, who finished second to Southwind Frank in their Dancer division. There are three Zweig events for the fillies with the topmoney-winners competing for a purse of $140,000 in Race 7. The field includes Womans Will, who won a division of the Delvin Miller Memorial last Saturday, finishing in a dead heat with Unica Steed (who is not competing in the Zweig), and Flowers N Songs, who took a lifetime mark of 1:53 at Mohawk on May 28 when she defeated Caprice Hill in the $134,233 Ontario SBOA stakes.—By Kathy Parker $300,000 Dr. Harry M. Then it will be a ship back home for the Dan Patch six days later at his home track. “He came out of the race really good,” said Rheinheimer. “He’ll race in that race on Hambletonian day at the Meadowlands and then we’ll come back here for the Dan Patch.” In addition to the fourth in the Haughton, Freaky Feet finished second to Always B Miki in the Franklin. Rheinheimer believes the tables will turn. “We’ll be there—eventually,” he simply stated. Shamballa was a surprising second at odds of 39-1 in the Haughton final. That is, a surprise to everybody except the 6-year-old gelding’s connections, including driver Scott Zeron and his father, trainer and co-owner Rick Zeron. “He raced great and Scott gave him a great drive,” said Rick Zeron. “It took Scott a few tries to get to know the horse. The second time he drove him in the final at Pocono he caught on to the horse, but unfortunately we got dragged out of the race because the horse in front of us stopped in the last turn. Scott said to bring him to the Haughton and he’ll be better on a big track. And he didn’t let us down. He certainly paced where he is supposed to pace.” So where does the road go for Shamballa, who was parked virtually the entire 1 1/8 miles in the Haughton and still finished second, beaten just three-quarters of a length by Always B Miki? “I skipped this week’s Gerrity and will give him a week off, and then I hope to get him a prep race at Mohawk on July 30, and then to the U.S. Pacing Championship. Then to Indiana for the Dan Patch. Then some time off and I’ll prep him for the Canadian Pacing Derby,” shared Zenon. Zeron said he’s anxiously looking forward to the U.S. Pacing Championship and a re-match against Miki and the rest of the Big Three. “I’ll let everybody flap their gums,” said Zeron. “I still think Always B Miki is the best horse in North America, period. And they all talk about Wiggle It Jiggleit and Freaky Feet Pete, and I just let everybody talk. I’ll let my horse do the talking for me on the track with Scott driving. “Not disrespecting anybody, but maybe we have a shot at taking the big horse down off his throne.” As for Always B Miki, the 5-year-old pacer is resting on the laurels of his four-race win streak until the U.S. Pacing Championship. Trainer Jimmy Takter said he hasn’t mapped out any future schedule beyond that race. “He came out of the Haughton very good and I’m very pleased,” said Takter. “It’s tough to go those tough miles every week. He has these couple weeks off until the U.S. Hambletonian All Over NY The day after winning a division of the Stanley Dancer Memorial Trot with Southwind Frank, driver Yannick Gingras attended a baseball game at Yankee Stadium and was greeted with this message during the game. A billboard promoting the Hambletonian has also been on display in Times Square in New York City. Pacing Championship but after that I don’t know. I only go one step at a time.” Meanwhile, at this time last year State Treasurer was one of the kingpins in the older pacing division after finishing third in the Ben Franklin final and second in the Haughton Memorial final. This year the Franklin final did not turn out well for State Treasurer and his connections. “He was fourth-over. It wasn’t a winning drive. We expected better that night,” said Dr. Ian Moore of State Treasurer’s seventh-place finish in the Ben Franklin. Dr. Moore shipped State Treasurer back to his base in Ontario to regroup and plans for the horse to be at the Meadowlands on Hambletonian Day to defend the U.S. Pacing Championship. Last year State Treasurer won the race in 1:47. “We ended up giving him a week off (after the Franklin),” said Dr. Moore, “and we would have liked to be in the Gerrity this weekend, but he doesn’t have enough money on his card.” Instead, State Treasurer will compete at Mohawk on Saturday in the $34,000 Preferred. HarnessRacing Weekend Preview, 10 of 15 July 22, 2016 Hall of Famer Harry Harvey Dies Ellen Harvey Photo Harry Harvey, the Vermont-born son of a dairy farmer who trained and drove Albatross, one of harness racing’s most important sires, died on Sunday (July 17) at the age of 92 after a long battle with old age. One of 12 children, he was born October 22, 1923 in Duxbury, Vt. to Mabel and Harry F. Harvey. He drove his siblings to school in a pony cart, worked the fields with heavy horses, made maple syrup and cut ice from the Winooski River to help sustain the big family in a harsh, hilly climate. During World War II, he helped his father select green draft horses in Montreal, to be shipped by rail to the family farm. He walked them home from the rail yard with his siblings, leading two in each hand. Harvey helped train and sell the horses, in demand due to war-time restrictions on gas and oil. He saw harness racing at Vermont fairs and when Little Pat and driver Earl West won a race in 2:01 in 1938 at the Essex Junction Fair, his father confidently told him, “You’ll never see a horse go faster.” One of the young horseman’s duties was to walk the work horses to the farrier over the bridge to Waterbury, where he read every word of Harness Horse magazine. Discerning that Tom Berry was the leading trainer and driver of the 1940s, he launched a job seeking, letter-writing campaign aimed at him that spanned years. He finally got a telegram in 1947 telling him to report to winter training headquarters in Florida. Berry admitted years later that he offered him a job just to stop the letters. Harvey joined the Delvin Miller Stable in 1951 and was a second trainer in 1953 when Miller entered Elgin and Charles Armstrong’s filly, Helicopter, in the Hambletonian. Miller and his other second trainers, the late Jimmy Jordan and Jimmy Arthur, drove horses with better prospects, but in the 23-horse field, going three heats, Harvey and Helicopter prevailed. The next year, he left the racetrack to manage Miller’s Meadow Lands (PA) Farm, where Adios was beginning his career as the sport’s dominant sire. It was Harvey who suggested the mare Countess Vivian be bred to Dale Frost when Adios was battling the effects of laminitis. The mating produced Meadow Skipper. After Adios died in 1965, Harvey bought the Meadow Lands Farm annex where he lived and started his own Arden Hills Farm and racing stable at nearby Arden Downs, the Washington County fairgrounds. For 54 of their 61 years of marriage, Cornelia Harvey managed finances for the farm and stable, taught the children to ride and rode stallions at both Meadow Lands and Arden Hills Farms. www.harnessracing.com It was at Arden Downs that Albatross, a son of Meadow Skipper, arrived in November of 1969, and where he was trained until sold in May of 1971 and moved to trainer Stanley Dancer a few weeks before the start of his 3-year-old racing season. Harvey drove the colt through a 14 for 17 season and top juvenile pacing colt honors for 1970 and prepared him that winter and the following spring. Harvey was elected to the Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 2001 and continued to operate a public stable until 2009, driving in distinctive solid maroon colors. His long time patrons included Art and his son Tim Rooney, Saul and his sons Richard and Steven Finkelstein. He trained the Rooney-bred Hall of Fame broodmare Lismore and many of her $4.1 million winning progeny. In 1994, Rooney homebreds Lisheen (1:52.3, $518,405) and Newbridge (1:53.4, $237,528), out of Lismore and Powerscourt, respectively, also Harvey trainees, were first and second in the Mistletoe Shalee. Harvey referred to the pair, who spent nearly every day of their lives together, as the “Ballerina” (Lisheen, refined and quick) and the “Working Girl” (Newbridge, stout but relentless). Lislea Phia ($542,450 1:50.2), winner of the 2007 Matron Stake, and bred by Tim Rooney, was his last good horse. In his last years, Harvey delighted in watching YouTube replays of her improbable, incredible charge to the wire to win that race, driven by Tim Tetrick. A skilled woodworker, he made Mission and Shaker style furniture as fundraising items for the Harness Racing Museum and the Standardbred Retirement Foundation. The podium from which inductees to the Harness Racing Hall of Fame accept their honor was made by him from a black walnut tree on his New Jersey farm. Less complex creations included doll beds and fishing pole racks for grandchildren, for whom he also converted wheelbarrows and diaper boxes to makeshift carriages. He leaves behind his wife, Cornelia Etzel Harvey, who he met when she was a college student riding Saddlebreds at a farm in Goshen, N.Y., daughters Ellen Harvey, Anne Harvey Watson (Admiral James), Kathryn Harvey (Mark Teasdale) and son, Leo Harvey (Kathy Dunn Harvey), as well as grandchildren Elizabeth, Michael, Daniel and Emily Watson, Shawn and Ryan Harvey. His surviving siblings are Jim Harvey, Helene Harvey and Sister Mary Harvey. He was predeceased by infant daughters Elizabeth and Mary and siblings Irene, Steven, Ruth, Grayce, David, Wayne, Leo, and Mary Ellen. Funeral services will be private, with a graveside service for friends and family to be held at a later date at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in McMurray, Pa. Expressions of sympathy can be sent to Cornelia Harvey at Tower # 506, St. Dominic Village, 2401 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, Texas, 77021. Memorial donations to the Harness Racing Museum, 240 Main Street, Goshen, N.Y., 10924 or the Standardbred Retirement Foundation, 353 Sweetmans Lane, Suite 101, Millstone, N.J., 08535 would be appreciated.—By Ellen Harvey/Harness Racing Communications HarnessRacing Weekend Preview, 11 of 15 July 22, 2016 Ohio Owner Robert B. Reid Dies Standardbred owner Robert B. Reid, 75, of Mansfield, Ohio, died July 18, in Parry Sound, Ont. In recent years Mr. Reid shared ownership of numerous stakes winners, among them 2010 Kentucky Sires Stakes champion Beach Boy Tiger, Caviart Key, and this year’s Ohio Sires Stakes winner Canadia’s Bakin. He owned horses in partnership with trainer Steve Carter, Peggy Carter and Chuck Grubb. Mr. Reid was born Aug. 2, 1940, in Buffalo, N.Y., to the late Gerald and Phyllis (Wood) Reid. He then was employed as the National Sales Manager for Magnum Products. He didn’t just have customers but lifelong friends and business associates throughout the United States. He was a competitive athlete, who continued to play softball, basketball and golf his entire life. He immensely enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas, Florida, going on cruises, and being around his Standardbred racehorses. The family cabin in Canada was his favorite place to visit. Mr. Reid had friends in every aspect of his life; fraternity brothers, softball friends, and business friends. He was a very generous and giving person, he valued the time he spent with his family. His favorite past-time of all was creating wonderful memories over the years with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by four children, Robert S., Jane (Joe) Eagleston, Susan Shafer and Gerald (Susan); stepchildren, Tim Dennison and Margie Dennison; grandchildren, Bobby, Brian, Morgan, Kristi Walter, Abby Shafer, Tucker (Brandey) Peterson, Wade Peterson, Jared, McKenna, Brooke Dennison, Erica (Cody) Hawkins, Dalton Dennison, Dillon Dennison, and Zachariah Vance; great-grandchildren, Drew Walter, Kylie Walter, Rebecca Peterson and Amelia Peterson; and special friend, Kate Welch and her grandson, Caiden.
