THE VEXIN FRANÇAIS, A NATURAL
AND HERITAGE ENTITY OF CHARACTER
A strongly marked natural historical entity, the Vexin
Français has kept the authentic charm of a region with
a strong agricultural vocation where the harmonious
uniformity of the buildings is strengthened by the use
of local construction materials. From the hillsides of
the Seine to the lush green Viosne or Sausseron valChaussée Jules César
leys, this vast limestone plateau is well-known for the richness of its biodiversity and its landscapes.
An astonishing wildlife has even developed in its surprising environments
(limestone hillsides, marshes, alluvial
terraces, etc.). A witness to traditions and
customs, the small rural heritage, with its
peculiar crosses pattées, is dotted around
the landscape of the Vexin which was so
attractive to the Impressionists.

Created in 1995, the Vexin Français Regional Natural Park covers 99 communes which work with the departments of Val d’Oise and Yvelines and the
Île-de-France region for the harmonious and balanced development of their
territory. They share a project based on the preservation and valorisation
of its natural, pastoral, cultural
and built heritage. Registered
in a Charter set up for 12 years,
their commitments contribute to
planning, economic and social

Auvers-sur-Oise
Hiking on the limestone hillsides in La Roche-Guyon, going down the
Epte in a canoe from Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, discovering the wildlife of
remarkable natural areas... the Vexin Français offers a multitude of
outdoor and leisure activities (riding, fishing, golf, etc.) to do alone,
with the family or with friends.
The Vexin Français, a land of history and tradition, is revealed to
visitors through the cultural and
heritage sites which have made it
well-known: the Domaine de Villarceaux, La Roche-Guyon, one of the
most beautiful villages in
France, the Gardens of
Ambleville, Auvers-surOise, town of the Impressionists, the Gallo-Roman site of Genainville or
Epte Valley
the Chaussée Jules César.
It was also the first Regional Natural Park to receive land
of art and history certification from the Ministry of Culture.

The Maison du Parc and its ecomuseums
RECEIVING, INFORMING, TRANSMITTING
The Maison du Parc has been installed in the château
de Théméricourt, a fortified house and a XVth century
place of residence which is typical of the Vexin Français. In the middle of a 6-hectare park with a pond fed
by the Aubette de Meulan, this is an agreeable place
to walk and is an unavoidable starting point for setting
out to discover the Vexin Français. The outbuildings
of the castle host the museum of the Vexin Français
which offer the visitor a trip through history and natural surroundings, with a thousand and one ways to
discover it through events, guided tours, investigation
trails, an educational garden, etc. And if you want to
bring back a souvenir of the Vexin Français, the Park
shop has a wide choice of books, regional products
and local crafts.
With themes linked to the history and traditions of the Vexin Français, the Park ecomuseums bridge the
gap between the preserving of exceptional testimonials and their transmission to future generations.
An introduction to this journey, the musée du Vexin Français in Théméricourt shows the history, the
geography, landscapes, architecture and man’s activities.
The agricultural vocation of the territory is illustrated in the musée de la Moisson in Sagy around
a remarkable collection of agricultural machines and tools presented in a rehabilitated former farm
building.

The moulin de la Naze mill (maison de la Meunerie) in Valmondois traces the day to day life of the
millers of the valley of Sausseron.
The maison du Pain in Commeny (the House of Bread) presents the know-how of the baker and breadmaking through the centuries in the former flour granary of the village bakery.
The maison de la Vigne in Marines (the House of the Vineyard) makes relive the wine-making past of
the region, emphasizing tools, know-how, traditions and jobs in connection with the work of the wine
grower.

The Vexin Français has over 1000 km of marked hiking itineraries. To prepare
your hike, hiking circuit pouches and the Topoguide® Le Parc naturel régional
du Vexin français à pied are available at the Maison du Parc. More informations

• Les sentiers du patrimoine®
Heritage trails allow you to discover the local history of 27 villages of the Vexin Fran-çais. Routes are available on our website www.pnr-vexin-francais.fr.
• By bike
Several cycling routes pass through the Vexin Français, either along roads or on off-road tracks. You might
meet cyclists riding from Paris to London (www.avenuevertelondonparis.co.uk) or following the Santiago de
Compostela route. The first Boucle du Vexin circuit covers 33 km through the Oise and Sauserron valleys.
• The Vexin Français with the Baladobus
From May to September, the Baladobus serves on Sundays the main
places of interest of the Park from Cergy-Pontoise. Information, price
