October 2014 C is for Changes at JHS By Monica Carl Jeannette Senior High School is starting the 20142015 school year off with some new and exciting changes. The most popular change is the JHS Coffee Shoppe. Students and faculty are permitted to visit the JHS Coffee Shoppe during breakfast and Enrichment Period. Drinks that can be bought in the Shoppe include coffee, hot chocolate, French vanilla cappuccinos, and hot tea. Other food and items for sale include candy, honey buns, muffins, cookies, and chocolate covered pretzels. The cookies and delicious baked goods are made by students in Mrs. Gongaware’s Baking class. All food and drinks at the Shoppe are sold for a $1.00 or less. When asked what his favor- ite thing about the Coffee Shoppe is, Sophomore Gio Vonne Sanders replied, “Getting hot chocolate.” Due to the fact this is a new addition to the high school, there are still things that are a work in progress. On possible improvements, Sophomore Olivia Sirnic cited, “Their coffee because sometimes they do not make it right. Everything else (on the menu) is flame.” Although the Coffee Shoppe is new, they have a strong following. When asked how many drinks are sold per day, Mr. Onderick, the Learning Support teacher and co-sponsor for the JHS Coffee Shoppe, estimated, “On average, if I had to guess, thirty cups a day.” Mrs. Gongaware, the Family and Consumer Science teacher and co-sponsor with Students working during 8th period to prepare for Shoppe hours during EP. Mr. Onderick, explains how the funds raised from the JHS Coffee Shoppe will provide educational grants for teachers to fund new projects and materials for their classes. Continued on Page 3... Jayhawks Reaching Out This fall, the Jayhawks (students, faculty, and administration alike) have taken an active role in helping the community and fighting for important causes. While we began the school year with a surprising ice bucket challenge (pictured right), student athletes continued Jayhawk outreach through volunteer work at The Miracle League Baseball Field. Superintendent Dr. Hutcheson accepts his invitation to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to spread awareness and fight Lou Gehrig’s Disease at the high school’s first pep assembly of the year. Page 2 The Bird Call Homecoming: Looking Back and Looking Ahead By Olivia Vandyke The Jayhawks began their Homecoming weekend with their traditional Friday pep assembly. During the pep assembly, each couple performed a dance while walking across the stage to a song of their choice, played by the band. The shy freshmen couple, Chole Stein and Hunter Yates, walked out and waved timidly to their song choice, “Tequila” by The Champs. Sophomore couple, Jada Morgan and Brendt Billeck, did the Carlton to “Land of 1000 Dances” by Wilson Pickett. Seniors, Ariana Seanor and Dominic Naples, hand-jived to “Let’s Go Band,” by Andrew Balent. Carlee Shifko showed her gymnastics skills and Chad Painter pageant-waved to “Seven Nation Army,” by The White Stripes. Kiana Tran and Shawn Poth slid out in Risky Business fashion to “Old Time Rock & Roll” by Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band. This years’ Homecoming game took place on October 10th, 2014. The homecoming court was announced and presented on the field at half-time of the game. The elected Senior Homecoming Queen was crowned by last year’s returning Homecoming Queen, Monique Redman, escorted by Jeroen Wolfe. ning the title of Homecoming Queen also prompted Redman to consider friends and loved ones. “The first thing that I thought of was about my dad not being there and how he would be so proud of me. I look forward to crowning this years queen be- which we chose ourselves.” The Homecoming Queen announced during Friday night’s half-time was Senior, Carlee Shifko escorted by fellow Senior, Chad Painter. Painter stated, “It was an honor to escort the queen. It was a fun experience, and i’m glad that we get to come back next year.” Homecoming Queen Shifko described the friendly relationship amongst this year’s court members, “It was an honor and a lot of fun. Everyone on the court and I would have been happy for whoever would have won.” The dance was organized by Nicole Evangelist, Marissa Lewis, and Mr.Lawson. The theme of this years dance was a carnival theme. There were 74 couples that attended the dance this year. The food for the dance was catered by Parkwood. The DJ hired for the dance was Austin Taterek also known as “Dj Growl.” The students enjoyed their time sitting with their dates and enjoying salad, chicken, pasta, and mini corndogs while talking with friends. They also were able to have a fun time on the dance floor dancing to all the enjoyable song selections of their choice. “I made history—it was a big deal back in the day.” Jewel Burns, JHS 1990 Homecoming Queen cause its my last contribution that I can give to JHS. It will be nice to be able to crown one of my friends like how mine crowned me.” The Bird Call reached out to another Homecoming Queen from Jeannette’s past, Jewel Burns, who was crowned in 1990. Burns shared the historical significance of the 1990 win, “It felt amazing to win because I was the first African American women to achieve that. I made history--it was a big deal back in the day.” When reflecting on JHS Homecoming of 1990, Burns describes traditions past: “The Senior Court were driven onto the track in a convertible, Seniors Tony Mash and Nicole Evangelist exchange disgusted looks at the Homecoming Dance. Volume 11, Issue 1 Page 3 School Board Scoop By Tony Mash Approved or disapproved? The Jeannette School Board had a lot on the table for the up-and-coming school year. The September school board meeting took place on September 15 at the high school cafeteria. First on the agenda, the Jeannette Senior School Board was introduced to the student athletes of Jeannette High School that maintained a 3.5 GPA or higher. These students stood before the school board members, administration, and attendees and all applauded the success of our high school’s student athletes. Also, the school board approved the new addition of the Jeannette Senior High School Coffee Shoppe, located in the cafeteria. Students can buy coffee, hot chocolate, or baked goods during breakfast and Enrichment Period. School Board members and attendees were able to purchase coffee prior to the start of the meeting from students who volunteered to run the Shoppe that evening. Another exciting announcement at the September school board meeting was the official approval of the Drama Club’s production of Hairspray. Jeannette will be the only school in the area to perform Hairspray. The produc- tions will be held on Friday, March 20 and Saturday, March 21 at 7:30 pm. Also, the Sunday production on March 22 will be at 2:00 pm. Students are now able to stay in shape through after school work-outs. The School Board approved the use of the weight room on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays under the direction of Ms. Caravaggio from 2:42-4:15pm. The September board meeting also brought the approval of several field trips. The new gifted program, taught by Mr. Cameron, World History teacher, and Mr. Onderick, PAES Lab instructor, will participate in the Model UN at Gannon University and The Chain Reaction Contraption engineering competition at the Carnegie Science Center. Many field trips were approved during the October school board meeting as well. A field trip to Carmike Cinemas to see the premier of Mockingjay will be held Friday, November 21. Any student who has read the book, passed the Reading Counts test, and is not on the restricted list is eligible to attend. Forty-four spots are available on a first come, first serve basis. Also, any Junior or Senior student who has completed and passed, his/her required Keystone tests will have the opportunity to attend a field trip to the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC. Students will leave the school for D.C. at 6:00 am and return at midnight. More information on this trip is TBA. The October meeting also brought the announcement of new after school programs supported through grants from The Pennsylvania Department of Education. $400,000 will be provided to the after school programs every year for 3 years. The grant will focus on lessons in testable areas including a robotics club sponsored by the STEM class. The next school board meeting available to the public will be held on Monday, November 17. C is for Changes at JHS (Continued) By Monica Carl Through this process, the money put into the Shoppe “comes back for the kids,” she states. This means new updates for the classrooms and for the students. Although the Coffee Shoppe has already proven successful, Mrs. Gongaware shared that there will be new, upand-coming drinks including green tea and a new cappuccino machine with seasonal flavors. Hurry to school and start your day off with a coffee or treat made by the students of JHS! Tell us what YOU think! What flavors would you like to see at the JHS Coffee Shoppe? Senior Captain, Zack Altieri, states that he likes what Coach Reitz brings to the team. “He is a hard working coach who is very smart and is dedicated to helping us be as successful as possible.” Returning Head Coach Roy Hall has the team ready to take on all the challenges that single A has to throw at them, stating, “New attitude, New Conference, New classification, But SAME GOALS.” The Jayhawks finished the regular season with a record of 8-1. The team headed into the WPIAL playoffs on Friday October 31 against the Brentwood Spartans at 7:30 at Mckee Stadium. Tennis By Tony Mash The Jeannette Senior High School girls’ tennis team has had a rough season, but have also kept their spirits high. Sophomore, Jada Morgan, said, “The season is better than I expected and I enjoy playing with my friends.” Members of the team are already looking forward to the 2015 season. Sophomore, Hannah Poth, said, “I want to be more consistent with returning the ball and improving my serve next year.” “Mr. Lawson doesn’t give up on us and he’s an enjoyable coach.” The girls did not record a win this season; however, Kara Johnston recorded her first singles victory. When asked what she can improve on, Kara said, “I can improve on returning the opponents serve and not over-hitting the ball.” The girls record may not be what they wanted it to be but the team had an increase in players from the previous season. Mr. Lawson contributes to that increase. Mr. Lawson, considerably the top tennis recruiter in the area, enjoys coaching the tennis team. Senior Nicole Evangelist said, “I like how Mr. Lawson doesn’t give up on us and he’s an enjoyable coach.” Along with showing support for the team, Mr. Lawson likes to joke around with his team. Senior Captain Shaila Cecchetti said, “I will miss Mr. Lawson driving us to the away games and playing his favorite songs on the radio.” The girls’ tennis team may not have brought home a championship trophy, but they enjoyed every second they spent on the court. Senior tennis players Shaila Cecchetti and Nicole Evangelist pose with Coach Lawson. Volume 11, Issue 1 Page 5 Boys’ Soccer By Dylan Corob While the Jeannette Senior High School boys’ soccer team has faced many challenges this season, Head Coach Mitchell Steele has faith in his team, “There is a lot of young, raw talent for the boys soccer team.” Coach describes his team as his second family. The JHS boys’ soccer team has six freshmen, some of which are new to the sport. When asked what it’s like to play soccer for the first time for JHS, Freshman, Hunter Yates, said, “I was nervous at first, but now I am confident and excited to play with the team.” While there were not many seniors this year on the boys’ soccer team, seniors Mark Giaquinto, Tyler Rugh, and Shawn Poth showed strong leadership skills on the team. Senior captains Shawn Poth, Tyler Rugh, and Junior, Phoenix Brown modeled for underclassmen how the game is played. Coach Steele described how captains are not chosen based on seniority alone. “These leaders had to earn their spot as captain, as well as Phoenix.” The feelings of respect between Coach Steele and the team’s captains are mutual. Senior Tyler says “I love Coach Steele, Coach inspires me everyday to be myself and to be great.” Junior, Phoenix Brown also expressed feelings of camaraderie with Coach Steele. Brown commented, “He is easily my favorite soccer coach I have ever had, I am very proud to have him as a coach.” Coach Steele opens his home to the team during big games on TV. During big games at Coach’s house the team goes over plays and predicts who will win the big game. While the boys prepare for the big game they interact over pizza. Goalie, Shawn Poth, is also fond of Coach Steele. Poth describes Coach Steele as very motivated. The main goal for the boys soccer team is to make it to the playoffs. Coach Steele feels really good about this team. For the JHS boys soccer team this years record was 0-18. This year was just a test as coach describes it; a test to see how well the boys worked together. During the off season, Coach Steele plans, “I will be working a lot on different plays and communication drills with the team.” The goalie/ senior (Shawn Poth) states “The team has potential, but we are young, we need to step up and play our game.” Girls’ Soccer By Monica Carl many, Lisa Sajons. Coach Reott had previously coached with the Jeannette Midget Association, and had also cheered in her high school years and was made Captain. Captains of this year’s squad are Seniors, Olivia VanDyke and Monica Carl. Co-Captains for this year are Juniors, Maggie Manolis and Alex Pohl. Sophomore Jessica Dopkowski comments on work ahead for the squad, “We as a squad are off to a good start but there are certain things we need to improve.” Fellow Sophomore and cheerleader, Abbi Kunkle, agrees, “To be able to get better than previous squads and still work to improve for the rest of the season.” When asked what specific skills need improved upon, Sophomore Han- nah Morrison sights, “We need to improve on our stunts to prove we are capable of doing harder skills.” The squad has many new stunts this year to wow Jayhawk fans, including the new “Fallen Angels” stunt. Squad members Maggie Manolis, Olivia Vandyke, Monica Carl, and Alex Pohl pose with their pom poms. Golf By Joey Soles The legendary Mr. Shifko, Middle School English teacher, is the head coach of the JHS golf team. Considered beloved by many Mr. Shifko is a wonderful coach. Sophmore, Brendt Billick, credits Coach Shifko’s fun attitude and way of keeping players comfortable as what makes him an exceptional coach. In addition to Coach Shifko, comradery between the players really set the stage for such a fun and enjoyable season. With only one senior on the team, one could have of predicted JHS would struggle as an immature team. However, players should not be underestimated based on age alone. Younger teammates stepped up, and the team carried themselves well throughout the season. Players even assisted Mr. Davis on his annual field trip to Kistler’s Golf Course, mentoring younger students as they played on the course. JHS golfers model themselves after the pros when in the game. Sophmore player, Brendt Billeck, who was chosen as the team’s MVP for The Bird Call, looks up to the laid back style of pro golfer Bubba Watson. In addition to perfecting their craft, the squad has also been working to help the Jeannette community. The girls made an appearance at the Greensburg Home Depot on Saturday, October 4, for Kid’s Craft Day. The squad, along with other members of the Jeannette Senior High School Athletic Department, have also volunteered to assist at The Miracle League Baseball Field. How? What is ISIS? ISIS has been birthed from the views of Al-Qaida and an AlQaida affiliate. Being an Al-Qaida affiliate, ISIS is a terrorist organization. Who is leading ISIS? Leading the ISIS group is believed to be Abu Bakr alBagdadi. Abu Bakr al-Bagdadi is around 43 years of age. He is said to be from a religious Sunni Salafi family, and he has reportedly been kicked out of Al-Qaida for being too extreme (Sunni Salafi is what one could call a branch of Islam). Where is ISIS? ISIS is compiled of civilians from all over the world. They bring diverse ethnicities into the group through recruiting. The ultimate goal, as of now for ISIS seems to be establishing a new Islamic caliphate throughout the middle eastern countries. “Our last message is to the Americans. Soon we will be in direct confrontation, and the sons of Islam have prepared for such a day. So watch, for we are with you, watching.” - Abu Bakr al-Bagdadi How are they recruiting? ISIS is rising in numbers. Often, they gain manpower through advanced persuasive tactics on today’s easy accessible social media. Those sources of social media include Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and many other popular sites. When will you see ISIS in the news? With extremist methods, ISIS is constantly terrorizing civilians in the Middle East and threatening western life as we know it. CNN, as well as other world news outlets, seem to frequent the topic of ISIS and the state of the Middle East. This is important coverage not only for television ratings, but also to keep innocent civilians safe and informed. In addition to major news outlets, Jayhawks may hear updates on ISIS through current events pieces in Mr. Cameron’s World History course. Why? Many would consider ISIS’s tactics to be heartless and ruthless. Without just reason, ISIS continues to slaughter Jews, Westerners, Muslims, and anyone not agreeing with their extreme views and stances. Making direct threats to Westerners is Al-Bagdadi saying, “Our last message is to the Americans. Soon we will be in direct confrontation, and the sons of Islam have prepared for such a day. So watch, for we are with you, watching.” Volume 11, Issue 1 Page 9 Monthly Mckee Building Reportage: Field Trip to Kistler’s Writing By Joey Soles, Photography By Tony Mash This was the nineteenth year that Mr. Davis, McKee Middle School boys’ physical education teacher, has taken the eighth grade boys to Kistler’s Golf in Jeannette, PA. Every year, Mr. Davis takes the eighth grade boys to Kistler’s Golf to hit balls on the driving range and play par 3. Mr. Davis teaches golfing skills in his class, and his instruction leads up to this field trip which one could call the final assessment. Excellent golfing conditions on Kistler’s Golf Course. For reasons unknown, the number of students attending the field trip have dwindled in recent years. This was the first year that Mr. Davis let some of the seventh grade boys attend the trip in hopes of a better turn out. What The Bird Call found was that the energy, excitement, and general good times were all still present on this repeated trip. This was also the first year that Mr. Shifko, McKee Middle English teacher and JHS golf coach, brought the golf team to stay the entire day and help out the youngsters. High school players provided the middle school students with some great tips to improve their game. The day started out with the boys pairing up and hitting the driving range, while the JHS golf team provided excellent examples and insight. Then, it was off to the main pavilion to grab some lunch. Everybody (The “There could Bird Call staff not have been a included) had a blast, laughing better day to and carrying on be outdoors.” in the pavilion. Once lunch was complete, it was time for what all of the boys were wait- ing for: par 3. The boys broke back up into their groups as a JHS golf member was assigned to each group. The stakes were high as the middle school students were playing best ball on a couple holes for the chance to win Subway gift cards. Mr. Davis and Mr. Shifko oversaw everything as the boys took the course. Mr. Davis coaches the boys on their golf skills. Unfortunately, The Bird Call Staff had to leave about fifteen minutes before everybody was done with par 3. On the bright side, there could not have been a better day to be outdoors. With sunny skies and mild temperatures, all of the smiles and laughter only made the day brighter. #JHSPIX Challenge This month’s #JHSPIX Challenge was for the best Spirit Week photo.
