Event Dates
Sunday Walking Tours & Talks:
Sunday, February 1, 2015
1pm – 1:45
Within our three hybrid stations, East meets West through a cross-cultural fusion of
Zodiac signs and Astrological symbols. We will tour visitors around the park and to our
sites with the intent of adding more anecdotes and stories about the symbolism that is
included in our works, and additional cultural references. Everyone is welcome.
ʻEast meets Westʼ Closing Performance in the Park
Sunday, March 8 from 2 pm – 4 pm
Mask wearing participants and community members integrate into a journey around and
through the park. Each person experiences a unique perspective based on encounters
with groups of inter-disciplinary performers hybridizing their activities along with their
ʻEast meets Westʼ interpretations. Musicians playing traditional instruments while
incorporating contemporary genres (for example: Chinese Ehru player and the Sidewalk
Cellist) improvise with movement actors through reciprocity of rhythm and motion.
Accessible forms of expression and exercise, movement and music facilitate the narration
of simple stories and themes in concert with participants. Our objective focuses on the
belief that connections between individuals and communities forge through guided
interactive opportunities, both to diminish assumptions and to lift the barrier of
spectatorship.
Sponsored by BC Arts Council and City of Vancouver Cultural Services. Thanks to our
partners: Vancouver Park Board, Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre
and the Community Arts Council of Vancouver

DESTROY VANCOUVER is a series of experimental music nights that bring together
some of the worldʼs most influential improvisers with local sound artists and musicians.
DV is curated by drummer and sound artist John Brennan and presented by VIVO Media
Arts Centre.
BOTBORG is an international audio-visual performance group that fuses and rewires
raw electronic signals to create intensely visceral experiences of sound-colour
synaesthesia. Using a complex array of custom electronics, Botborg create totally live
multi-sensory assaults of interdependent colour and rhythm, pushing the limits of
technology to invoke the maximum possible stimulation of their audienceʼs mind and
body. Botborg work with a level of experimentation and improvisation that places them in
a territory outside traditional musical or cinematic formats, where the boundaries
between art, science, and philosophy mutate until they are rendered meaningless.

KEVIN ROMAINʼS FREE TIME TRIO | Circa 1964 inspired “third stream” jazz. Fast
cymbal beats and gratuitous shred. Kevin Romain: Drumkit (kevinromain.com), Nikko
Whitworth: Double Bass, Dominic Conway: Tenor Saxophone
RRKKTTTSS | Equal parts sonic exploration and performance art, rrkktttss is the electroacoustic project of Bill John Batt (eschatons, fake jazz, softess, aerosol constellations).
Utilizing a selection of semi-working yet mostly dying amplifiers rrkktttss demonstrates
the aural interconnectedness of a room through placement, pushing and pulling of
attached microphones and sound sculptures in search of satisfying tone. Through a
culmination of nervous energy, dedicated listening and body positioning rrkktttss
physically displays the sonic capabilities of a given space.

WATERS is a solo project encompassing minimal guitar and vocal based pieces. The
instruments act as a base for signal and texture, becoming, with process, only remnants
and figures of their former selves. Melodies and arrangements fall into a veiled response
from tactile measures. A set can be an examination of the guitar as a machine as much
as a melodic instrument. Waters is the solo endeavour of Lindsey Hampton. Begun in
2011 it has taken on a number of different forms, including collaborative pieces,
recordings and long format installations. Hampton is a multidisciplinary artist and
designer who lives and works in Vancouver, Canada.

9 EXHBITION: Far Away So Close Part II
Kathleen Ritter, Guillermo Trejo
24 January – 7 March, 2015
Far Away So Close is a series of exhibitions, publications, and events that explores the
idea of distance, considers the bridging of distance as an ultimately quixotic gesture, and
investigates the particular relationship of this gesture to art making. Presented over the
course of 2014–15 at Access, each installment features emergent artists who draw upon
a variety of modes, materials, and methodologies, and whose practices are scattered
across the globe.
art II is focused on the political utterance or gesture.

11 EXHIBITION: Undertow by Cheryl Fortier & Beyond Real:
Overexposed, Underexposed by Jeannette Sirois
Jan 13 to Feb 14, 2015
What lies hidden beneath the surfaces of oceans, rivers and streams? How might we find
ourselves in the mysteries of water? By exploring the nuanced world of light and color, of
abstraction and representation, Cheryl Fortier's paintings unravel our emotive
relationship to water and the natural world.
In Beyond Real, Jeannette Sirois pushes the boundaries beyond what we initially see and
seeks to capture intimate moments; those magic moments in which people are relaxed,
vulnerable, messy and exposed to the world. Using her technique of hyperrealism, her
work is meant to explore and not always to flatter.

18 EXHIBITION: Visualizing a Culture for Strangers: Chinese Export
Paintings of the Nineteenth Century
About the Exhibit: Chinese export watercolour painting is a special genre that
flourished in the city of Guangzhou (Canton), China. These works were created and
exported in large quantities by Chinese artists in western media and western techniques
to meet the demand for a taste of China: its life, its customs and its landscape and
architecture. To cater to the western market, Chinese export painters took references
from western artworks such as oil paintings, prints, watercolours and sketches. The
exhibition presents a cross section of Chinese export paintings and the influential role of
western art traditions on Chinese export paintings. This exhibition is on tour from the Art
Gallery of Greater Victoria, and is curated by Barry Till.

Reports to:
CEEP National Coordinator
Payment scale:
Negotiable
Our Campus Election Engagement Project has just wrapped up its first midterm election
programming and is gearing up for 2016. As you may know, weʼre a national nonpartisan project that helps colleges and universities use their institutional resources to
get students involved in elections, helping faculty, administrators, and student leaders
help students register, volunteer, learn about the issues, and turn out at the polls. We
pull together the most effective approaches to help schools do this, and our outreach
staffers coach the schools, with the support of our national team, on how best to
implement them. We worked in 20 states in 2014 and a similar number in 2012.
Weʼll use 2015 to continue working with key schools, laying the groundwork for
programs that require long-lead time planning, and maintaining institutional momentum
and relationships with key campus staff so can we pick up in 2016 where weʼve left off.
Because we donʼt have enough resources for an outreach staffer in every state, weʼre
looking to hire a smaller continuing team who will each take 3 to 6 of our targeted 2016
states, and continue engaging their schools with sustained but scaled-back support. As
before, these staffers will work through our state Campus Compact partners, building on
contacts developed in 2014 to keep momentum going at their major participating
schools. Our national staffers will again provide ongoing coaching and updated
engagement resources. Weʼre recruiting for a 2015 position, but with the goal of keeping
the person on through 2016
Responsibilities will include:.
•
Coordinating with staff of participating state Compacts to continue our 2014 work,
focusing on long-lead approaches that will have the maximum impact.
•
Sharing a workload of multiple states with other regional and national staff (CO, FL,
IL, IA, KY, MI, NM, NV, NC, PA, VA, WI)
•
Assisting with revision and creation of national resources, including how-to guides for
replicable programs and social media templates
Skills and attributes
v Ability to work with key campus stakeholders: administrators, faculty, and student
leaders, including senior administrators
v Experience in campus organizing preferred, particularly working with both
administrators and students. Community or electoral organizing experience may be
an alternative
v Strong and organized self-starter. Excellent phone and people skills. Ability to
coach our contacts at the schools and keep them motivated
v Ability to work remotely, with both outreach and supervision conducted by phone
v Ability to work in a strictly non-partisan fashion, whatever your personal beliefs.
Major long-lead program areas would include:
v Working with university registrars and IT depts. to integrate voter registration and
course registration, using the Rock The Vote or Turbovote tools
v Securing on-campus voting stations
v Institutionalizing approaches to meet state ID and registration rules.
v Working to integrate election related approaches into courses, including the James
Madison University model of academic credit for nonpartisan engagement and the
Virginia Commonwealth University approach of journalism classes covering elections
through social media.
v Fostering community outreach efforts like Virginia Commonwealth
Universityʼs
voter registration partnership with the nearby Mosby Court public housing community,
or the registration drives that Ohio State students and Mott Community College
students conducted in nearby low-income neighborhoods.
v Working with student life and student affairs advisors to encourage student
governments to allocate resources for campus election engagement, following our
Wisconsin model where two student governments allocated $5,000 apiece for election
engagement interns.
v Creating ongoing administrator and student government funded engagement
entities like Ohio Stateʼs OSU Votes.
v Helping schools sign up for CIRCLEʼs
NSLVE study of student electoral
participation. (NSLVE is willing to look at the voter turnout rates of all our participating
2014 schools that sign up for their study)
v Working with campus newspaper advisors and editors to develop coverage
templates
v Work with high enrollment schools that werenʼt engaged in 2014, like some of the
major community colleges
v Expanding partnerships with local registrars and city clerks, following a model that
our Pennsylvania staffer developed with the Philadelphia city clerk.
Expected outcomes:
Continued relationships with campus contacts, and new contacts identified
v Increase number of Tier 1 schools enrolled in NSLVE
v Each of CEEP's four keystone models in progress at least 1 school per state
O
Mosby Court model of engagement with community partners
O
James Madison model of classes running nonpartisan efforts
O
Wisconsin 2014 model of student government support
O
OSU Votes model of ongoing school-funded coalitions
v Classroom/voter registration integration in progress at least 3 schools per state
If youʼre interested pass your resume on to Campus Election Engagement Project
National Director Theresa Bruskin and sheʼll pass it on to the team.

73 PROPOSALS: TransX Transmission Art Symposium
Call for Papers, Performances and Workshops/Tutorials
Deadline February 1, 2015
http://naisa.ca/opportunities/calls-for-submissions/trans-x-call-for-submissions/
New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) is pleased to announce the 2015 edition of
the TransX Transmission Art Symposium
with Keynote speakers Knut Aufermann and Sarah Washington
May 22 - 24, 2015
NAISA is now inviting submissions for papers, performances and workshops/tutorials:
Rooted in the earliest experiments with radio, Transmission Art has continued to flourish
into the 21st Century with experiments using wireless communications technology
over the past 100 years, including the exploration of a variety of mobile-based
platforms and lesser-known forms of transmission, such as VLF. The terrain of
transmission art is dynamic and fluid, always open to redefinition.
The TransX Transmission Art Symposium, part of the Deep Wireless Festival of Radio &
Transmission Art, will focus on Transmission Art, with particular interest in contributions
that summarize, examine or reframe traditions and histories of transmission art
practices, technology, education and pedagogy. Additionally, we are very interested in
presentations that go beyond the local contingent to give a sense of how new
technologies of international transmission activity might be experienced. Proposed
presentations, performances and Workshops/Tutorials that combine the themes of
Transmission Art and our 2015 theme “HEAR n o w HERE” are also especially welcome.

ca/CalltoArtists or call Marsha Newby at (905) 521-2100, x. 77540.
Objective and Background:
The MCHC building itself will be a powerful communication tool and aspires to be a
space that is welcoming to children and adolescents, is family friendly but is not childish;
it inspires and is inclusive. The theme for the new MCHC facility is rooted in the
statement, ʻMy MCHC is a place where I can be my Best Self”. The conceptual
framework for the MCHC design is “journey, discovery, and connections”. Connections
to family, caregivers, teachers, community, nature and the self are representative of
optimism, hope, relief, and client self-efficacy. As we continue planning for this new
facility, theming has continued to evolve and includes a proposal for a cyclical and
biophilic theme. The solar and lunar cycles represent an opportunity to allow each day to
be a new beginning, a sense of freedom, a new source of hope. Solar imagery
represents warmth, energy, brightness and associated colours like yellows, oranges, and
fresh greens while lunar imagery represents coolness, contemplation and soft light and
associated with colours like pale, calming blues, purples and muted greens.
Further informing the theme of the MCHC are key phrases:
•
Family and Child/Adolescent Friendly. But not overly childish
•
Lighten and Elevate-the mood, expectations and day of the clients, families and
staff.
•
Hopeful-instill optimism, relief, hope in clients, families and staff.
•
Not scary-ensure the facility does not nurture fear, fright and anxiety and
alleviates through an environment of calm and comfort.
•
My Best Self-promote the opportunity for clients, families and staff to become
the best they can be, grow to their best self and provide the best possible care.
•
Joyful-instill joy, brightness, levity through colour, light, spatial qualities.
•
Spiritual-reinforce a sense of greater good, of support through faith and by
raising the spirits of everyone who uses the facility.
•
Mindfulness-promote a sense of being present in the building and in the
experience.
•
Inclusive-let the facility welcome everyone on their own terms, through ease of
access, clear way-finding, respect for diversity, and support for those with different
abilities and economic needs, support for families.
•
Integration-embrace the greater whole and the breadth of the facilityʼs role in
how users interact and move through the facility.
•
Neighborhood-embrace where the facility is and celebrate its heritage, its sense
of place, pride of place and its belongingness.
The multi-storey art installation is to be located in the light well that transverses the
vertical space through the first floor lobby upward to the 4th floor. Note the renderings
are for illustrative purposes.
The multi storey art element is a dominant feature of the first floor Main Lobby space and
is immediately visible as you enter through the main entrance (see illustrations in the
attached MCHC web link). The installation will be suspended from the 5th floor
penthouse level through the 3.5 m x 9.0 m ʻlight wellʼ core of the building as illustrated
above. The multi storey art element is open to the double-height space in the 1st floor
Main Lobby that reaches upward alongside an open stairway to the east leading to the
2nd level with a balcony that overlooks the Main Lobby space below and directly onto
the art element (see Level Two illustration on the MCHC web link). On the 3rd and 4th
levels, the multi storey art element is surrounded on all sides by floor to ceiling windows.
Within the first floor Main Lobby, space, the multi storey art element will be suspended
directly above the Family Resource Centre area and seating and bounded to the north
by a double height window overlooking the Therapeutic Playground and Wheeling Track.
Along the east wall in the Main Lobby space adjacent to the multi storey art element is a
3-D Art Wall that is in development. To the west of the multi storey art element in the
Main Lobby is, a Donor Wall that is also in development. South of the multi storey art
element is the Main Lobby circulation space, the Information Desk, Elevator Lobby, Café
Area and the main entrance to the building. The multi storey art element will be visible
from the north exterior Playground and Wheeling Track.
Please contact Marsha Newby with questions at: (905) 521-2100, x.77540 or

Enter text
Special residency program for poets, writers & text-based artists at Arteles Creative
Center in Hämeenkyrö, Finland.
Fiction writing, visual/sound/trad. poetry, graphic novels, code art, calligraphy,
typography… All to be equally greeted with joy & creativity in Finland with other
enthusiastic, international text artists & writers.
Silent nature & solitude
Surrounded by beautiful forests, fields and lakes, Arteles Residency provides the perfect
setting for intense writing and mindplay close to the nature. The same award-winning
landscapes (European Union Landscape Award 2009) have also been an inspiration for
F. E. Sillanpää, the Nobel Prize winning author born and raised in the region.
The predefined structure of the program is very flexible, allowing you all the time &
space you need in order to take your work where it wants to go. Weekly group meetings
are a good chance for feedback and discussions, but if you feel more like barricading in
your writerʼs chamber, you are completely free to do so, as all participation is 100 %
voluntary.
Experiment freely
To accompany the intensive solo practice, the program is an excellent opportunity to join
forces with other text-based creatives from around the world. Share, examine, go crossgenre – play around and see what comes out. Brainstorms to be finished in the heat of
the traditional Finnish sauna.

90 FAIR: Open call for the KÖLNER LISTE Fair for Contemporary Art
Parallel to ART COLOGNE and within walking distance, the KÖLNER LISTE will be held
at The New Yorker | DOCK.ONE from April 16th to 19th, 2015. After a successful start in
2014, the BERLINER LISTEʼs little sister will again be promoted as a modestly-sized
forum for fresh, contemporary art with high collector potential. The spotlight will be on
emerging, promising artists whose work is still in a reasonable price bracket. Therefore
the fair offers ready to use white cube boothes at reasonable prices. The fair for
exploratory art targets young collectors, curators and artlovers who want to head home
with new, original artworks. Prices range between 500 and 9,500 euro at the lower end
of the art market.
The architecturally impressive The New Yorker | DOCK.ONE will provide the KÖLNER
LISTEʼs location again in 2015. With its raw, industrial charm, this is the ideal space to
present modern art in a communicative atmosphere for collectors and galleries, art
lovers and artists to exchange.
Once again the fair will be curated by Dr Peter Funken, who has made a name for
himself as an art journalist, author and curator of renowned art exhibitions. Himself born
in the Rhineland, he sees Cologne as an internationally recognised art market providing
exciting challenges and chances for the satellite fair focused on emerging art.
“With extended space, the fair in April 2015 will present more participating artists and
some real surprises. Cologne and contemporary art are synonyms for a city in the centre
of Europe whose galleries and fairs are of outstanding quality.
The KÖLNER LISTE will be the spring highlight for all who want to trust their own eyes
and instincts to guide them to discover new art at very reasonable prices”, Peter Funken
says.
International galleries and project groups are invited to apply to exhibit. Particularly
welcomed are projects and galleries who want to display sculptural work and
installations in the outside unique sculpture area.
Applications are open online: www.koelner-liste.org.
The KÖLNER LISTE will be held April 16th to 19th, 2015.
Opening: Wednesday, April 15th from 6pm at The New Yorker | DOCK.ONE
Location: The New Yorker | DOCK.ONE, Hafenstraße 1, 51063 Köln-Mülheim
A shuttle service will be offered between the KÖLNER LISTE and ART COLOGNE.

103 SYMPOSIUM: THE SCHOOL OF SOUND INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM
2015
A unique series of masterclasses exploring the art of sound in film, the arts and media
Wednesday – Saturday 8-11 April 2015
Purcell Room, Queen Elizabeth Hall
Southbank Centre, London SE1
Registration is now open
What is the School of Sound?
The School of Sound is a biennial symposium created to encourage a cross-disciplinary
approach to using sound in the arts and media. We explore what sound does, how
audiences listen. It is a place where you can raise your awareness of how audio
production works, how it conveys information and emotion, how you can work with it.
For four days you'll be immersed in a world of imagination, invention and innovation.
Listening to presentations from a diversity of incredible talents, you will be able to
disconnect from your day-to-day work, taken out of your comfort zone, to reflect on
sound as something that is profoundly complex, entertaining and important.
Why attend the School of Sound?
The SOS is not an academic conference and it is not about how to get a job. It is a rare
opportunity to hear and meet 20 creatives working at the highest levels of the arts and
media speaking in detail about how they think and work.
And the SOS is not about just one area of sound production. The programme covers
film, theatre, dance, opera, games, installation, music and radio - expanding your
thinking and increasing your ability to work across diverse genres and forms of
production.
At the SOS you will mix with hundreds of like-minded people - professional practitioners,
educators, artists and students - with whom you can network, exchange ideas and
create collaborations.
The SOS is delighted to announce the first details of the 2015 programme.
