A Note From the Chairman
Without the cooperation and support of all those
involved this event would not be possible..and
especially without the support of you, the racers
and the poker runners!
In return, the Stumpjumpers donate a significant
portion of the proceeds to many different charitable
organizations both locally and statewide, as well as
to organizations that are fighting to protect our right
to ride in this state.

elcome to the 43rd edition of the annual Spring Desert 100 weekend. This event is being staged on the Wes King Ranch
near Odessa, Washington. This is a working cattle ranch and as such, we must do our best to have as little impact as
possible on this property. This is private property leased for the weekend from Wes King, owner of the ranch, to be
used only for the weekend of April 6th and 7th. Only those signed up for an event may travel the grounds outside of the camping
area. This property is not open for general play riding at any time.
We all know how hard it is to find an area suitable for an event like the Desert 100. Please respect the wishes of the Stumpjumpers
and Mr. King in regards to the property, so in future years we may have the possibility of continued use. Please stay on the marked
course at all times. We would like to have as little impact on the land as possible.
On behalf of the Stumpjumpers Motorcycle Club
I would like to offer a hearty THANK YOU! to
everybody for making the trip to Odessa to
participate in the 43rd Annual Desert 100. For the
Stumpjumpers this is the event that defines us as
a club and because of that we pour our collective
heart and soul into it to make sure that it goes off
smoothly and everyone has a great time.
This event takes many months of preparation
and planning, coordination with landowners,
local law enforcement, county officials, and the
generous business owners and citizens of Odessa.
With this in mind I urge everyone attending this
event to become involved with the Northwest
Motorcycle Association. It is easy and inexpensive
to become a member and the more members that
are involved the more influence the NMA has. If
you own a dirtbike there is no excuse to not be a
member...it is an organization that fights for what
YOU want! You can find them on the web and
become a member online at www.nmaoffroad.org

You may have questioned the Event Flyer in regards to bringing a clean motorcycle to the event. The reason is to mitigate the
possibility of introducing unwanted weeds onto the property. I might point out that in Nevada a clean vehicle, whether bike or truck,
is required because the BLM does not want plant seeds brought up from Arizona, California or Mexico introduced into their desert.
As always, campfires are not allowed. Please clean up your camp and PIT area before leaving.
The Stumpjumpers want you to have an enjoyable weekend, but please remember that we are guests here. Treat this property like
it was your own front yard. You do not have to mow it, but leave it as you found it. Thank you and have a great time.

WHO ARE THE
STUMPJUMPERS?
W
e are a family oriented, off-road trail riding motorcycle club that loves to have fun.
Promoting motorcycling and the safe use of motorcycles is one of our main goals.
We were founded in 1967 and have one of the biggest driving forces in off road motorcycle
events, in the Puget Sound area. We promote many of the most well known off road motorcycle events that enthusiasts look forward to each year. With the main purpose of the club
to have fun, we also have club play days on a monthly basis. Each month one or more of
our members put together an event exclusively for club members and friends. With fun in
mind, these events range from trail rides, poker runs, camp outs, and occasionally a nice
relaxing barbecue.
Club Sponsored Events
The World Famous Desert 100 - Since 1970 when this annual race began, the Desert
100, once known as Mattawa, has been the most prestigious off road race of the year. In
additon to the race, the Desert 100 weekend features the following events:
Family Poker Run - This is a fun event for the whole family and each year it gathers
hundreds of riders just looking to have a fun ride and great time.
Iron Man Poker Run - This is not for the faint at heart. Designed for the more advanced
rider, this event is much longer and harder than our family poker run.
Dual Sport Ride - We also put on a very fun ride for those who have dual sport bikes.
People always look forward to these events knowing they are in for a fun day.
Frost Bite Cross-Country Grand Prix - The White Knuckle of 2004 had such good feedback
that the Frost Bite was created to please the appetite of those who loved the White Knuckle.
Golden Spike Hare Scrambles - This is one of the most well known Hare Scrambles in the
state. This event attracts some serious racers but most just come to have a very fun time.
White Knuckle Cross-Country Grand Prix - Another well known race that features some
“character”.
Our Three Main Points are: HAVE FUN! HAVE FUN! HAVE FUN!
Monthly Club Meetings
Even though our monthly meetings are restricted to adults only, it is a great way to get
together and enjoy what every one of our members has to offer. This is where we plan
and organize our club events, but we also have a lot of fun in doing so.
When do we meet?
We meet on the first Wednesday of every month at 8:00 PM.
Where do we meet?
At the American Legion Hall in Mountlake Terrace. 22909 - 59th Avenue West.

Absolutely. If you are thinking of getting involved, please come to any of our meetings.

If you are thinking of looking into a fun and friendly off road motorcycle club then you owe
it to yourself to come and check us out. Every member of the Stumpjumpers Motorcycle
Club are members for one reason, and that is to have fun. Monthly meetings are for adult
only, however the monthly play days are for our families and friends of all ages. At the
meetings, we plan activities for the whole family. Trail riding, having fun, our families and
motorcycles are what we love the most, and not necessarily in that order.

RACE RULES
These are general rules relating to on course activities. This event is covered by the
Stumpjumpers Competition Rule book (Based on AMA rules)
1
All riders must attend the riders meeting prior to the start of the race.
2
All riders must be at the designated start line in order to get a start check. All riders
must take a direct route to the “smoke bomb” from the start line. Once past the “smoke
bomb” all riders must funnel onto the marked course. Any rider obviously off of the
marked course in order to gain an advantage will be disqualified.

All riders must remain within 12 feet of the marked course. Any rider deemed intentionally off of the marked course to gain an advantage will be disqualified.

All riders must stop and be checked at each check-point. It is the rider’s responsibility to
ensure that they have a proper check.

All riders must approach the check-point from the proper direction.

All riders must finish the race on the machine they started with.

Team Riders must change numbered bibs at each rider change (Number on both front
and rear of rider).

All riders must refuel an the designated PIT. All teams must make rider changes at the
designated PIT. Pit crews are not to go out on the race-course to assist their rider.
10 This is a multiple loop race. It is the rider’s responsibility to know when he/she has completed the required number of loops to be classified as a finisher.
11 At the finish of the race an official will count the check-point markings received by the
rider. The rider must have all required check-point markings to be declared a finisher.
12 NO TEAR-OFFS
Note: The Stumpjumpers M/C Race Chairman, and Course Referee will
have the absolute authority to interpret the Rules and make decisions regarding controversies as a result of race activities.

In 2011 my son Ryder and I went to our first Desert
100 to hang out with friends and watch the races. I
brought along my son’s Yamaha PW50, conveniently
leaving the training wheels at home. I purchased
the bike when Ryder was 4 and he was VERY
attached to the training wheels. Every time I tried
to remove them, he would throw a fit! At six years
old, Ryder was more than ready to drop the training
wheels, he just didn’t know it yet.
hat year, we took off on the road trip to the
Desert 100 (I “accidentally” left the training
wheels at home). When we got there, my son
was in awe of all the dirt bikes and riders. He
wanted to be just like them but was afraid to
ride without the stability of training wheels.
He was terrified, but knew he wouldn’t be
riding around that weekend unless he rode like
a big boy. Our friend Rudy took Ryder aside
in a camping area and explained to him how to ride a dirt bike without
training wheels. To my surprise, Ryder agreed to try it. I turned my head
as Rudy started it up and gently let go of the bike. When I turned around,
Ryder was riding that bike as if he had been doing it forever and it was
at that moment a motocross racer was born! He never looked back and
everything has revolved around dirt bikes since that one special day at
the Desert 100.
The next morning he asked to enter the PeeWee desert race. I nervously
watched him get ready for his first start. As the race progressed I watched
many other kids circle around back to me multiple times without ever
seeing Ryder and I thought for sure he had crashed. After all, he was
brand new to dirt bikes let alone racing. After one particular racer passed
in front of me three times, I got worried. Just then Ryder came around
the corner putting along at his own speed and having the time of his
life! He finished that first race in 37th place. It was great...after all, he
finished!
Today, Ryder is a crazy, happy 8 year old who races a KTM 50 and a KTM
65 flying over jumps and participating in all kinds of races. In 2012, Ryder
finished the Desert 100 kids race in 12th, the Desert Thunder & Black
Widow series at Horn Rapids in 2nd, the Top Gun team race in Washougal
in 2nd, and just finished racing in two different arenacross series. He
took 1st place in the WHR Northwest Nationals Arenacross series in two
classes! In Spring 2013, Ryder’s big goal is to qualify locally for Loretta
Lynn’s even though he knows he is not quite at that level yet. It is a great
goal nonetheless and motivates him to work hard. He recently got a new
KTM 65 and slept with it in his bedroom for the first three nights....and it
all started at the Desert 100! Thanks Stumpjumpers! :)
Ryder now has many sponsors and many people to thank. Without these
supporters, Ryder would not be able to pursue racing: Grandma and

n early February 2012, Toes and Derek Mclntyre, a riding
buddy and friend, discovered a 19-year old local racer, Alex
Harvill from Ephrata, Washington. Alex is a college student
studying at Perry Technical Institute working on obtaining
his electricians degree. One day, Alex was out practicing on
Toes’ outdoor track. He ventured over to hit the dirt kicker,
which was on the back of the dirt landing. After hitting
the dirt kicker a few times Toes’ nephew, Kody, told him “Just hit the
ramp”, Alex simply answered with “OK”, With zero speed runs, Alex
hit the ramp three times flying 266 feet with the new ramp, which
was at the time about 190 feet away from the landing. Toes and
Derek were sitting in the truck and just looked at each other. Toes
said, “Did little Alex just hit the distance ramp?” Derek said, “Damn!
I think so”. For a few weeks after that, Toes was a little bummed out
that Alex hit his
ramp without asking permission. Eventually Toes got over it and
decided to give Alex a chance to prove himself to see how far he was
capable of jumping. The next time Alex went back to hit the ramp he
jumped his stock KX250F, two consecutive days resulting in a final
distance of 240 feet. Alex wasn’t quite satisfied, so Derek was kind
enough to let Alex borrow his stock 2011 CRF450 to help maximize
his potential. By the end of the second day, Alex hit the ramp on
Derek’s CRF450 with new gearing at 14-48 at 78.83mph with a 226-
foot ramp gap and flew over 312 feet. On the third day, the
crew pushed the ramp back to a 246.6-foot gap. With the same
gearing, Alex hit the ramp at 90.72mph and jumped 350 feet and
2 inches. At this point, Derek and Toes felt it was necessary to
get a local filmer to document what was happening at Toes. They
called Jason Bodner, who came out with two EX1 cameras and a
bunch of GoPros. On day four, in front of Jason’s cameras, Alex
jumped a total distance of 350 feet with a ramp gap of 266 feet.
Jason decided to stay one more day in hopes of capturing the
first 400-foot jump, but on day five Alex had maxed out the stock
CRF450 at 97.94mph, fifth-gear pinned! He went 378 feet with a
ramp gap of 301 feet.
The following week Toes purchased all the parts from I-90
Motorsports to make a complete head for the CRF450. Toes
then gave the parts to Dan Moore from EVO Suspension to ship
out to KB5 industries on the east coast, USA. A few weeks later
they got back the completed built head and out a brand-new
stick piston in. Derek, Toes and Alex spent some time testing the
bike and breaking in the new head. Dan Moore softened up the
suspension to give it more rebound off the ramp. Once Derek,
Toes and Alex figured out the gearing they liked they were finally
ready to test out the new bike.

The initial speed runs proved the bike was now capable of
reaching a top speed of 107mph. Alex was now ready to attempt
a 400-plus foot unofficial world record jump.
By Alex’s seventh day of distance jumping and on the
rebuilt bike a 322-foot ramp gap, Alex had unofficially jumped
over 408 feet. Unfortunately nobody was there to capture it on
film, which raises the question “If a tree falls in the middle of
the forest and nobody is there to see it, does is actually make a
sound and did it happen?” Well, that’s basically what happened
here except Toes and Derek were there to see it.
It was at this point that Toes and Derek contacted Jay
Schweitzer and Mike McEntire to come up and film Alex jump
over 400 feet. Jay and Mike have documented all of Capes’,
Maddison’s and Bird’s jumps and are considered to be the best
long-distance jump cinematographers in the business. Mike and
Jay have been working on their documentary on the history
of long-distance jumping for over six years and have captured
the biggest jumps in history. Toes knew that he wanted to
have this 400-foot jump captured by them in order to properly
show the true magnitude of this jump. Prior to their arrival,
Toes hired a survey crew to accurately give the proper distance
measurements through the use of the Leica GPS digital device.
The surveyors laid out a 500 feet in five-foot increments.
On May 10th, 2012 Jay and Mike flew into Seattle,
Washington with all their camera gear and then drove out to
Toes MX Park. They accurately documented the surveyors laying
down the flags in five-foot increments.
On May 11th, 2012 the weather was decent, but not
ideal jumping conditions. There was an 12-15mph consistent
headwind all day. They brought out the helicopter to track Alex
off the insane jump, and after Toes made Alex do two speed runs
to check the radar. Alex went for it on the third run. However,
it was the fourth jump of the day that was a
whopping 409 feet! Alex was so comfortable
in the air that he actually looked over at Jay
for almost the entire fourth jump. After that
jump, the crew moved the ramp back to a 354foot ramp gap, which was the largest ramp gap
in history… Ironically, 354 happens to be Alex
Harvill’s racing number. Alex jumped several
times throughout the day, but the temperature
began to heat up, which didn’t give the bike as
much compression, resulting in lower jumping
numbers throughout the day. So the entire team
agreed to come back the following morning at
8am, and Alex would give it another try.

up to hit the ramp. Derek was on the landing getting ready to
mark the exact tire touchdown mark wherever Alex landed. Alex
approached the ramp at 105.77mph with a 354-foot ramp gap,
which was the biggest clear gap in history. Alex sailed through
the air perfectly landing at an incredible 425 feet! He stomped
the landing clean, threw up his left arm up in the air and claimed
it. Alex knew as soon as he landed that he landed well over
400 feet. Alex rode up on top of the landing and was instantly
surrounded by his dad, Toes, Derek and all of his friends.
Everyone there had just witnessed something very special, the
longest motorcycle jump on flat-level ground in history. Hard to
believe that just six-years ago Ryan Capes set the world record
for over 300 feet. Now Alex Harvill pulled off in nine days total
of distance jumping what many others have been trying to
accomplish for most of their jumping careers.
Alex has these words to say after his magnificent jump. “I
would just like to thank Evel Knievel and all of the other jumpers
who have helped to push this sport to where it is today, without
them I wouldn’t even be here. I feel privileged to be jumping in
the same era as them and furthering the progression of longdistance motorcycle jumping. Also thanks to my Family, Friends,
Toes, Derek, and Kody for believing in me and helping to make
my dream a reality. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for
me and look forward to doing more insane jumps”.
Nobody knows what the future of distance jumping holds
and how far a man and his machine are capable of flying.
One thing is certain though, Alex Harvill is not only the future
of distance jumping, he is also part of the next generation
daredevils, and he has no plans to stop jumping anytime soon.
Alex believes 500 feet is within his grasp. With Alex’s team
behind him, now all he needs is some sponsors.
The following morning all the cameras were
in place by 7:30am. There was a slight 7 mph
headwind, and Alex geared up ready to hit the
ramp. Alex didn’t take one speed run. He raced
through the berm with his foot out in classic racer
style as he pinned it towards the ramp. Toes was

At about mile 30 of
the first 50 mile loop
I was passed by a
rider on a KTM and
battled it out for a
short while, getting
blinded by dust. I was
on the gas, top speed
and coming out of
the dust at an angle
off the main line and
unknowingly right to
a large ravine just off
the course...by the
time I saw what I was
about to hit it was too
late to stop.
As I dropped into
the hole, I knew I
wouldn’t be able to
jump the gap and
decided to part
ways with my bike.
I attempted to jump
off over the bars, and
ended up clipping

my boot and going down in a heap
with the bike. I have already had a
knee surgery due to a crash on my
right knee, and the second I hit the
ground I knew I had done some real
damage. My bike was half way down
and I was close to the lip of the ditch.
I laid there screaming like a banshee
in the worst pain I have experienced,
holding my right leg and not knowing
what was next. Fortunately some of
the amazing Stumpjumpers crew was
close by and on the scene quickly.
I hear the standard “Are you ok”,
“What happened” etc, but don’t think
I responded with much more than
a shout of, “My knee!”. I then heard
something I wasn’t ok with, “I will radio
in for the chopper”. Now I did purchase
insurance to race but I wasn’t ready
to take a ride, and being the stubborn
racer I am I also wasn’t okay with a
DNF beside my name in the results.
I got the guys to get my bike up and
checked out. The front end was
beyond straight, but rideable. I asked
them to start the bike and proceeded
to get lifted onto the seat of my 300.

Driving down from Canada, getting
across the border and heading down to
Odessa has become a highlight of each
racing year, and for 2010 I was hoping
to get my best finish yet. My sister
Victoria & I arrived late Friday night and
found camping in the temporary city
that forms in the desert every spring.
Saturday we watched a few pee-wee
racers riding around before gearing
up ourselves and getting some bike
testing in. Everything was great, bike
was working well, suspension was spot
on and confidence was high for Sunday
morning’s race. When the morning
came we lined up on the starting line,
not able to see one end to the other,
with hundreds of guys all wanting a
good start ready to go. Unfortunately
this year had a false start and once
the wave of racers started there was
no stopping it. Seeing a large group
running to their bikes I followed. I had a
great line and gained several positions
before the bomb, getting up to the top
20 or so. Eventually I was able to get
up to around a top 5 position and was
riding smooth and fast.

After assuring the guys I knew what I
wanted to do I took off, racing on only
my left leg, while letting my right one
“relax”. After a few miles of adrenaline
the pain had lessened, but was still
there and I was unable to bend my leg
whatsoever. I got into the 50 mile gas
check, knowing I should pull off and
go straight to the medics, but again I
thought that if my leg and knee are this
bad I may not be able to race for quite
a while, I’m going. I got filled up, told
my crew to have medics ready when I
came back and took off. As frustrating
as it was getting passed by racers I
knew I could run with, I wasn’t left with
many options and just completing the
next 50 miles was my mission. Painfully
and determined I made the lap, and by
the end was feeling light headed and
was having trouble staying on one foot.
Pulling in I decided to head to my truck
first for some odd reason. I didn’t know
I was bleeding, but as soon as I looked
at my pants above my boots I knew
it wasn’t going to be pretty as blood
had soaked its way through. Slowly
my boot was removed, and with it
came blood running out like water. My
sock was white before the event, now
drenched and dripping in blood. That’s
where I stopped and was brought to
the ambulance. They removed my
pants, knee brace and cut the sock
off, revealing a gash across my knee,
deeper than you could imagine and
with much more blood still flowing
out. I had shattered my knee cap into
more pieces than could be counted,
and cut into my artery causing me to
bleed out, and causing my light-headed
and unclear thinking. I don’t know if
my compression sock and knee brace
were keeping enough pressure while
I was racing to keep me going, but
with those off it was not a pretty sight.
I went down to the Odessa Hospital
immediately. Best medical service I
have ever experienced, but wasn’t very
fun. I was told I lost too much blood
and needed to be worked on right away
and couldn’t be given anything for pain.
So into the OR I go, with my sister
right with us the whole way to keep
an eye on me. They did some work
on my knee which Victoria said was
horrible to watch. After that I was put
in an immobilizer and sent on my way.
We returned to the race sight where
I stayed in the back seat of the truck
while the bikes and gear were loaded
and it was at this time that I found I was
still able to finish 9th in the open class
and 14th overall.
The drive home was as much fun as
you imagine, and the first few nights
were sleepless. After more doctor
visits and work to my leg I was told I
would have my knee immobilized for
3-4 months, and during this time not
to flex or move my leg as it would tear
my new knee cap apart. Well after a
long time of my parents letting me stay
with them and taking care of me, I took
my first steps on a leg no bigger than
my forearm. It took me 12 months of
non-stop physical training to get feeling
back to semi-normal, whatever that is.
And now a few years later, I still live
with this injury, in pain every day, as a
constant reminder of what happened.
I have had success getting back to
racing, and have been getting faster
than ever.

I’ve been involved in just about every sport, and unfortunately, motocross ranks high as an injury-ridden sport. On
any given day, you can see someone sprawled out on the track like a cheap yard sale. Stopping trackside and providing medical assistance
to a downed rider is what any responsible rider would do. When I’ve taken a dirt sample, it’s nice to know that some guy cares enough to
stop and check on me, even if it is just to tell me to get up and stop blocking the track.
It would be great to be able to teach you advanced trauma life support or CPR protocol from trackside medicine, but with my
writing skills and your limited reading time, it isn’t going to
happen in this article. The real truth is we all should know
CPR. Nothing can compare with the feeling of helping to
save someone’s life. CPR online courses such as, www.
firstaidweb.com can certify you for free and in less time than
it takes to put on a new set of tires, with far less sweat and
profanity.
For the purpose of this article, we will assume that
the downed rider is conscious, possibly alert, oriented and
breathing. So what should we do when stopping to help a
downed rider?
First, always remember that you should never move the
rider until his condition has been sufficiently assessed and
always send for medical backup. We can all attest that
after hitting the ground we are not always aware of our
surroundings or all our injuries. Pain from one injury (broken
wrist or ankle) can mask the severity of other more important
injuries (spinal cord compromise). We must always assess
other potentially serious injuries before focusing on the
obvious or less serious injuries. Head, neck, back and chest
injuries (breathing difficulty) are the first to evaluate once you have determined that CPR is not required.
If the rider isn’t alert, determine whether he is having difficulty breathing.
If he is, implement CPR training. If the rider is alert, ask him if he is having any
problems breathing. If not, obtain the rider’s full name and whom he’s with; make
sure to remember this information in case he passes out. Determine if he is
