Morgan Mr. and Mrs. Michael M. Strueber Mr. and Mrs. James Titelman Mr. and Mrs. John Wandrisco Director’s Welcome The teaming of the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art and the American Cancer Society at the Altoona Museum’s annual Think Pink Fashion Show is an awesome combination. This is our second round with the American Cancer Society and we are delighted to be working with them to raise community awareness to “knock out” cancer, while supporting SAMA operations and programs. Our Think Pink event represents a partnership between two of this region’s most recognized and respected not-for-profit organizations and I am sure you will agree that in community fund-raising, “recognized” and “respected” are a terrific one-two punch. This main event program was the brainchild of SAMA-Altoona Coordinator Barbara Hollander and I commend her for entering the ring with a strong message and unbounded potential. Barbara and Think Pink Chair Chantel Ventura-Garofalo have been strong promoters of the event and I thank them for all that they have done to make this a winning program. Their corner has seen good support from an active Think Pink committee and a community engaged in this initiative. Volunteers and SAMA staff have worked hard to make this event a very special evening for everyone in attendance. We are pleased to once again have the Allegro in our corner for this year’s program. Patrons and sponsors have stepped up to help make this endeavor a success. Finally, I thank the Director’s Circle, Museum Associates, Exhibition Patrons and other donors who give generously to make our work at SAMA possible and to help us go the distance. This initiative remains one of SAMA’s signature fund-raising programs. Funds raised through tonight’s event are critical to maintaining museum operations and sustaining SAMA programs and to helping the American Cancer Society. The support SAMA receives from this event helps to keep our doors open to the public free of charge and to fund our community art exhibitions and education programs. Also, our contribution to the American Cancer Society will help knock out cancer. The annual fashion show fundraiser at SAMA-Altoona is noted for its food, festivities and fun. This is SAMA’s twelfth year of staging this fund-raising event and the Think Pink theme reflects our commitment to community involvement, sophisticated style and the attention to detail for which the program is noted. SAMA welcomes this opportunity to take you ringside for this year’s main event at the Altoona Museum. G. Gary Moyer Executive Director Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art Welcome to Think Pink 2014! This has been a big year for me in my “museum life.” I have long been an avid lover of art and fashion. Earlier this year, I was asked to join the Board of Trustees of SAMA, and I am very honored that Barbara Hollander asked me to be the chairperson of this year’s Think Pink event. For the past ten years, I have been a frequent attendee and patron at the various opening receptions and exhibitions at all of the SAMA sites and a regular attendee and supporter of the annual Gala and fashion show fundraiser. I continue to be impressed with the thoughts and ideas of our museum members, committees and leadership circles. I have the great luxury of having many talented individuals who I have been able to call upon to make this event a success. This year’s leadership circle is comprised of veteran committee members with areas of expertise such as co-chairing, decorating, fashion, and knowledge of fine spirits (i.e. scotch). We are very pleased to showcase the fashions of Diamond Bridal Collections and Special Occasions as well as Color Me Beautiful by Dede Kazmaier. We hope that you will continue to patronize their establishments for your fashion needs. These ladies are a joy to work with! Also, we welcome for the second year the Allegro Restaurant, which consistently provides excellent dining fare. Danny Taddei and his staff provide authentic Italian dishes that are second to none in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Jim, Grace and I thank the community at large for their support, as well as our friends and family. Fondly, Chantel Ventura-Garofalo Think Pink Chair Think Pink has become one of this region’s signature fundraising events. With twelve years of this SAMA-Altoona fundraiser now under our belt, it amazes me how much we have learned and how we continue to grow. The enthusiasm of our sponsors, our committee, and the Museum staff is invaluable to the success of this event. The pride that these supporters take in our Museum specifically, and in our city as a whole, cannot be matched anywhere. My sincere appreciation is extended to all of the individuals who worked to make Think Pink a successful program for everyone in attendance. This is the second year of our partnership with the American Cancer Society, and I am honored to recognize Cindy Karcher as the brainchild behind this initiative. I see wonderful things for our future as we forge new paths in the non-profit world together. As President of the American Cancer Society’s Blair Volunteer Leadership Council, Jan Andrews has been instrumental in sustaining our relationship and enthusiasm as partners toward finding a cure. I offer a special thank you to Chantel Ventura-Garofalo, who served as chair of this year’s event. Her dedication to task and attention to detail contributed immeasurably to our success. Chantel has served the Museum in multiple capacities over the years, this year becoming one of our newest trustees. She is selfless in her sense of duty and has inspired all of us to do a better job. Her sense of style and beauty also does not go unnoticed when the eye is on fashion. I thank Gary Moyer for his guidance in this event and throughout the year. I extend special thanks to Diamond Bridal Collections and Color Me Beautiful by Dede Kazmaier for the wonderful fashions that adorn our models and to the Allegro for their culinary expertise. I thank Jeff Greenberg for his photographic skills. SAMA-Altoona welcomes this opportunity to bring you ringside for the Think Pink event of 2014. The funds raised tonight are critical to Museum operations and programming. This funding keeps our doors open free to the public and funds our art exhibitions and educational programming. Barbara Hollander SAMA-Altoona Coordinator The American Cancer Society is once again thrilled to partner with the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art for Think Pink: Knock Out Cancer. October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, highlighted locally by the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) 5K Walk. Following so closely, this event is a natural extension of the theme SAMA has chosen. I thank Barbara Hollander, SAMA-Altoona Site Coordinator, for her leadership and inspiration for this event. Thanks also to SAMA Executive Director Gary Moyer, event chair Chantel Ventura-Garofalo, and all of the committee for their hard work and generosity in making this event happen. Like the fight against breast cancer, this is a team effort with a great team. Special thanks to Diamond Bridal Collections and Dede Kazmaier for organizing the fashion show. Diamond Bridal generously donated a Maggie Sottero bridal gown valued at more than $1,600 to raffle to benefit MSABC. Two additional beautiful bridal gowns and other elegant dresses are all being modeled tonight as well as chic, casual elegance by Color Me Beautiful. Please continue to support these community-minded businesses. In 2014, an estimated 232,670 women and 2,340 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Thanks to research you support through fundraising events like this one, death rates have dropped in the last ten years by more than 34%. That means more than 203,000 more birthdays are being celebrated! In addition to research, money donated to MSABC also supports local community programs that help your family and friends in their fight against breast cancer. You should be proud that by supporting this SAMA event, you are also supporting the American Cancer Society. So here’s to a future cure, great organizations like SAMA, and a fabulous evening here in Altoona!
