The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. 2011 AbilityOne Product Catalog
The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. 2011 AbilityOne Product Catalog The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. 2011 Ability One Product Catalog | 1 Thank You! It is my honor to thank you for supporting The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. through the continued purchase of our various SKILCRAFT® products represented in the pages of the 2011 Product Calendar. It is because of your purchases that we are able to abide by our mission, which is to create and enhance opportunities for independence and self-sufficiency of people who are blind, Deaf-Blind, and blind with other disabilities. Additions to the catalog this year include many new models in our Quartet®/SKILCRAFT® line of wallboards, as well as a page highlighting the different types of boards we carry and their ideal applications. Another new page this year describes the features and benefits to our HydraMax® blow-molded bladder. Perhaps the most exciting addition to the catalog showcases our new E-Tool, a collapsible entrenching shovel made by people who are blind that we are currently selling to GSA and will soon be rolling out to Base Supply Stores. We’re very proud to add this item to our offerings, because it demonstrates the type of work blind people are capable of when given the right tools. Our catalog wouldn’t be complete without also letting you get to know a few of our employees who work so diligently to make our products. From light assembly to machining complex airplane parts, they are the face of the Lighthouse and I am honored to introduce them to you. Kirk Adams President and CEO The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. He was born Deaf-Blind as the result of German Measles. Growing up in San Patricio, TX, Alberto started elementary school at four years old, and it wasn’t until then that he started learning sign language. Alberto attended a mainstream middle and high school for hearing students in San Antonio, and he passed all his classes and earned his diploma. Following high school, he moved to Austin and went to the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center for nine months of intensive training in deaf-blindness skills, including cooking and orientation and mobility. In 1999, Alberto learned of and attended the Lighthouse’s DeafBlind Retreat in Seabeck, WA for the first time. During the retreat Alberto had the opportunity to take a tour at Seattle Lighthouse. “My jaw dropped open at all the jobs and different opportunities here,” recalls Alberto. “My fiancé and I thought about it for a long time, but we decided we would definitely come to Seattle for me to work here.” Since coming to the Lighthouse, Alberto says he has learned the importance of communications, and he enjoys teaching his hearing blind co-workers ASL so they can communicate with one another. Ursula McCully Contact Center Representative Seattle Lighthouse In July 1988, Ursula McCully was a mother and working for a bank when she was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa. Only six years later, in 1994, she was legally blind. Despite being provided with adaptive technology by the Washington State Department of Services for the Blind (DSB) that allowed her to do her job looking up documents on microfiche, Ursula’s employer was focused on increased productivity and profitability. She was let go that same year. By April 1995, Ursula completed DSB’s Orientation Training Center program, and she was ready to re-enter the work force as a blind customer service professional. Despite getting multiple interviews, she never got called for follow-up meetings. In late 1996, her job coach called to let her know that the Lighthouse was opening a customer service department. After a phone screening, she finally got that call for another interview. “Pretty soon, I got a call asking when I could start. I said, ‘Anytime!’,” she says. “On my first day, I met Dana Marmion, who was also hired as a Customer Service Representative — we still work together today.” When asked what she likes most about working for the Lighthouse, Ursula states, “The sense of belonging. The sense of ‘we’re all the same’ regardless of if you’re blind, Deaf-Blind, or sighted. We’re here for the betterment of the Lighthouse and to be in business. I contribute to that belonging.” 4 | 2010 2011 Ability One Product Catalog The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. Lauren Schlaeppi, Jr. CNC Set-Up and Operator Seattle Lighthouse “Up until the age of six, I thought seeing two of everything was normal,” Lauren Schlaeppi, Jr. states. “It turned out that it wasn’t, and the doctors had to disconnect my right eye.” Lauren was diagnosed with cortical blindness. The best vision he ever had in his left eye was 20/200, and the optic nerve in his left eye is now deteriorating. As an adult, Lauren went to work for The Boeing Company as a tool operator. While working one day using a wheel cutter, Lauren leaned to one side and didn’t realize there was a problem with the tool due to his vision loss. As he was leaning, the wheel cutter blade flew passed his head. “That was in 1994 or 1995, and it was at that point I couldn’t do that job anymore. I was on disability, unemployed, and I was mad against the world,” says Lauren. “I was scared and didn’t know what do to, I tried other jobs, but they didn’t work out.” Eventually, Lauren received training on Job Access With Speech (JAWS), a screen-reading application that would allow him to return to working in a machine shop. The companies Lauren applied to at first were evasive about whether they’d hire him. In 2006, the Lighthouse came up on Lauren’s radar screen as somewhere he might be able to work and receive some training. He was hired and is now working in the machine shop as one of dozens of blind employees making parts for The Boeing Company and other aerospace companies. Lark Braun Production Worker Inland Northwest Lighthouse Born sighted, Lark Braun became visually impaired when she was five years old as the result of brain cancer; her optic nerve detached from her retinas. Lark attended the Washington State School for the Blind beginning when she was seven years old. Her education there included vocational studies, and she graduated with her high school diploma when she was 21 years old. From there, it was her goal to work at the Inland Northwest Lighthouse (INL). “I pretty much knew I wanted to work at INL right out of school,” she states. She applied in July 2009, and she began work at the Spokane facility in March 2010. Lark knew President and CEO Kirk Adams from chapter meetings of the National Federation of the Blind in Spokane. Two of her childhood friends also worked in production at INL, and Director of Recruiting Don Helsel visited her school to talk about job opportunities. At INL, Lark works on both the wallboard and easel production lines. “I like it all. It’s busy work, and I like to be busy. I like the socializing, and I love to build stuff.” When asked about how the Lighthouse has benefitted her, Lark says, “It’s helped to improve my self-confidence and gave me more encouragement and hope in finding work being a blind individual.” 2011 Ability One Product Catalog | 5 The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. 2010 WALLBOARDS CORK · MAGNETIC · IN/OUT · PLANNERS · DRY ERASE · FABRIC Available in a variety of sizes and styles!
