CLINT’S
CHATTER
Welcome to another, if somewhat late
edition of The Toybox. My apologies for
not sending this edition out sooner — a
healthy
dose
of
silly
season,
computeritis, new computeritis and my
own general busy (read—slack) lifestyle
is to blame, to the point I’ve made the
decision to combine the January and
April magazines into one publication.
It has been a steady few months for
TECCWA since the last publication — I
was fortunate to attend the Toymods
Car Club’s Toyota Fest Car Show in
Sydney in October along with a few
other TECCWA members, we had a
couple of well attended workshop tours,
an impromptu coffee run and the annual
Christmas BBQ at South Perth was also
run and done. The start to the New
Year has seen another coffee meet and
greet, a navigation run and a night at the
drag races as we increase the focus on
club development. We have also had
another coffee run in April to socialize
and collect some much needed
membership renewals before our first
official Annual General Meeting in May.
Club wise, membership has grown

steadily, and we’ve taken steps towards
solidifying our position with our
incorporation
occurring
in
late
December. This will enable the club to
do many things not previously able as
we are now an official body. It will also
mean a better defined committee
ensuring there is always something for
the club members to attend or do.
We’re hoping to have the committee
positions all but finalized by the time the
AGM comes round, partially to show
everyone how we want to operate as a
club and also to enable people to attend
the AGM without the fear of coming
away with a position of duty they didn’t
expect!
Personally, I have a few projects
underway that are taking way too long!
I’ve completed, registered and sold a
garage queen GT Four Celica project,
making room for another car I’m
determined to go through the same
process with. Hopefully the upcoming
events will motivate me to finish them –
but more on that in the following pages
and in future issues of The Toybox.

PAST EVENTS
Powercruise—October 2010
Club member Mark Andrews organized
a group of friends to attend Powercruise
– a show billed as “Australia’s Wildest
Cruising Car Show”.
The group
displayed a range of cars with a slant
towards late model Toyotas.
Of
particular note was a certain 2JZGTE
powered Hiace van that surprised many
an errant Commodore driver on the drag
strip, while Mark himself had a
revolutionary experience during this part
of the event by spinning out onto the
infield. While this event is predominantly
a V8 and late model style affair, it is also
fast becoming the biggest car show in
Perth, so something to consider
attending when it next returns to
Barbagallo Raceway in 2011.

Toyota Fest 2010
The NSW based Toymods Car Club
again held their annual Toyota Fest Car
Show in Sydney, with several TECCWA
members attending.
Club members
Nathan Jones and John Wuttrich were
among several interstate participants,
who presented cars at the show after
making the long haul over. The weather
was again unwilling to comply, so for the
third year running the show took place in
an undercover car park – hopefully this
year’s show in October will see some
sunshine to really bring out the best in
the cars?! A good mix of old and new
style cars were on display with the show
bringing out some rare models – Rod
Try’s MS51 Crown Coupe was a
personal highlight along with a Race
replica of Peter Williamson’s RA40
Celica as seen on this month’s cover
along with John’s AW11 MR2.

sets of points – talk about a nightmare to
point gap and set up?! Darren also
showed off his collection of cars on the
day, with his leaning towards Rally
coming through in some of his
selections. The chance to ask questions
directly was well utilized so much so, we
ran over time for our next appointment.
Workshop Tour – Schultz Auto and
C-Red Tuning
Fortunately, Josh, Jeff and Marc at CRed Tuning were still lurking around
their workshop to show off their Toyota
orientated projects. Jeff’s own personal
JZA80 Supra was on display and
showed the value of effective exhaust

Our first workshop tour as a club kicked
off at Schultz Automotive Electrical
Service with Darren Schultz discussing
several of the services provided by the
business, and showing off a few industry
specific tools not commonly seen. Of
particular interest was the Magneto
display he had set up which was able to
produce a spark so strong it was
jumping a gap of approximately 15mm,
the company’s magnetizer, and a
Lamborghini distributor that housed four

system modifications, Josh’s street/strip
Hilux with a 2JZGTE driveline was also
available to view, and Marc’s daily driver
Mercedes with yet another 2JZGTE
driveline conversion was also present.
A few customer cars were also
available to view along with what I
believe to be the world’s first automatic
GT Four Celica – modified to suit the
owner’s desire to keep the car after a
motorbike crash. We rounded out the
day with a sausage sizzle and one or
two tall stories.

Run/Impromptu
January to June 2011
Coffee
November was slated for the Navigation
Run, however numbers were insufficient
to provide a worthy event and as a result
of the time taken to organize, we choose
to hold it over for revised date in January
and simply had a coffee/brunch with
those people that did show up on the
day.
Group discussion on circlework after the Nav Run!
December BBQ
The event was re run with a good mix of
members and non-members turning up,
despite the threat of a Cyclone hitting
Perth on the same day.
Despite
numerous comments for people to do
the “distance check” prior to the start,
only one car actually did it – and won the
event – congratulations to Gene and
Jenelle. An unchecked nav run would
not be an unchecked nav run without
one error creeping in, fortunately the
participants were already driving around
in circles (as per the instructions!) when
it occurred and was easily spotted! A
few comments of “Why did I voluntarily
choose to do this event” early in the day
dissipated as they toured through metro
mazes and into the hills with a final
destination of Whiteman Park – where
everyone arrived, …, eventually
Issue 2
The annual BBQ was again held at
South Perth with a more low key
approach for 2010.
Numbers were
down compared to previous years
however we again managed to sign up a
few more members on the day. The
fight to secure a parking spot was eased
when rangers opened the grassed areas
for parking, we even managed a small
impromptu car show for the day too!

UPCOMING EVENTS
Clint’s Coffee Convergence—April
Robin Mullet’s GA61 Supra with Lexus V8
conversion under the bonnet
We spent a night at the Kwinana
Motorplex with a good mixture of cars
attending.
Robin Mullet’s newly
repowered GA61 Supra made a debut
with a Lexus V8 under the bonnet,
however a warm night and higher than
desired
track
temperatures
saw
everyone not revelling in desired “fast
times”. An obnoxiously loud MR2 was
the exception to the rule reeling off
consistent eleven second passes thanks
to the twin turbo V6 motor under the
bonnet amongst other magic not yet
known to mortal man.
As this edition of The Toybox is late –
this event has already been run and
done. Once again we had a good mix of
both members and non-members
coming down for a coffee and chat,
Chub the dog even arrived somewhat
late and nursing injuries from his
exuberant lifestyle and despite malicious
rumours that Clint was also late for the
meet – he prefers to think, those that
attended were early?! We have given
some thought to varying the coffee meet
location – if you know of a good café
with a convenient car park, please let
Clint know?
Annual General Meeting—May
Robin and Rudi, both with Lexus V8 powered
Supras, go head to head
We have slated this event for May in the
hope you will have all paid your
membership renewals in April, and so be
eligible to vote in the sacrificial calves,
…, err, office bearers for the following
twelve months. For this year’s AGM,
we’re easing everyone into the routine
and hope to have at least one
nomination for every position – so you
can happily attend without the fear of

being voted into a position you had not
previously considered. The meeting will
take place at Doug and Emily Edwards
home, 28 Gertrude Way, CHAMPION
LAKES on Sunday May 29, 2011 at
11:30am. We aim to run through our
obligations succinctly, and will round the
day out with a light BBQ at $3pp for
those interested in socializing while
viewing Doug’s collection of Toyotas –
he has a few, so allow a few hours after
the meeting! More info on the AGM and
voting papers are enclosed in this
edition of the Toybox.
Motorkhana—June
Our first foray into this style of event, to
be held on Sunday June 5 at the
Midvale Speed Dome with Scrutineering
from 8:00am. Both members and non
members are welcome with members
paying $65ea and non members paying
$75ea for the morning’s entertainment.
You’ll need a registered car and basic
safety gear, contact Rudi for more
information on securing a spot or simply
coming to watch the red mist descend
upon normal people! The TECCWA Stig
trophy will also be dusted off for the best
time of the morning.

FUTURE PLANS
Dyno Day—July
The guys at C-Red will host our first
Dyno Day as a club. A chance to find
out how much power your car really has
with a power run. We’ll be having some
fun with the day, running a pool of
predicted and actual figures and a few
light hearted awards also available on
the day. Any vehicle with any power
plant will be welcome with TECCWA
members receiving a discounted price to
non-members. Mark it in your diaries for
July 3rd.
Workshop Tour—August
We’re in the midst of organizing another
workshop tour, this time turbocharger
related. Steve at United Fuel Injection
and Grant at Per4manz Turbochargers
will host us for our August get together
to discuss everything from standard
rebuilds to performance applications.
Grant’s new full chassis drag car build
will also be on display.

THE TECCWA REASONABLY
PRICED CAR
The club will be replicating the Top Gear
“Reasonably Priced Car” and Test Track
on a motorkhana skid pan to attract new
members to the club, encourage some
light hearted competition amongst
existing members and provide a
baseline from which we can truly find our
TECCWA Stig?! The venture will be a
“pay for drive” opportunity to race the
clock on a representation of the test
track. With this in mind the steering
committee set about finding a suitable
car that was both economical to buy and
run, but also on the cheaper side to
maintain – because let’s face it, we’re
expecting to break it!
We looked at a lot of older four cylinder
Toyotas thinking about repair cost
predominantly
before
someone
mentioned a Starlet. The idea of racing
Toyota’s budget entry level car of the
late nineties was all too amusing for us,
so we bought one! The club now owns
a blue 1997 Toyota Starlet 3 door, …,
and a bloody big dent! The damaged
car was bought complete and running
but unlicensed and requiring some work
before we can relicense it for ease of
transporting it to and from events.
As Purchased from an Irish lady with
astounding driving abilities!
busy bees on the car to prepare it for
registration inspection, with the first
focusing on panel beating the afore
mentioned dent!
This is a perfect
opportunity for those who know—to
teach, and those who don’t—to learn! If
you’re interested in either showing your
skills, or simply coming along to learn,
please contact Clint. We will be holding
our first busy bee on the car Sunday
afternoon June 19, 2011.
We are also looking for further financiers
for the project to offset purchase, repair
and maintenance costs, if you’d like to
be involved, please contact Clint Godde.
Now before you get excited at the
thought of turning our little “Life” into a
hot hatch, we will disappoint you now—
the car will remain standard as possible,
even down to the original steel wheels!
With that in mind, we will be holding

MOTORSPORT LICENSING
THE TOYBOX
MEMBERS DISCOUNTS
TECCWA is once again working our way
through the minefield of Public Liability
Insurance when considering among the
many events we want to hold as a club,
some include motorsport. At this stage,
we are evaluating the pros and cons of
both CAMS and AASA coverage and will
report more in the next edition of this
magazine.
HISTORIC REGISTRATION
We have started the process of applying
for Historic Registration for applicable
vehicles, through the Department of
Transport. If you have a standard older
Toyota or any other eligible make and
model of car, this is a good way to
obtain a cheaper registration premium
for the reduced road time enforced by
this style of licensing. More in the next
issue of The Toybox.
CALENDAR ENTRIES
The constant struggle to avoid date
clashes has brought about the need for
a truly concise automotive event
calendar. We will develop and publish
this on the TECCWA website with links
to event homepages included where
applicable, as a continuation of the
partial calendar feature at the back of
every magazine.
This will hopefully
become a ready resource for anyone
wishing to find an automotive event in
the following twelve months of listings.
Please forward any automotive event
you wish to have included to
[email protected]
We will be issuing membership cards
with all memberships this year. Present
this card to access discounts at several
supporting businesses in Perth, such as:
C-Red Tuning—receive a 10% discount
on all labour charges billed to you upon
membership card presentation . Thanks
to Josh, Jeff and Marc for this offer.
Veales Auto Parts—receive trade pricing
for parts supplied by any Veales store.
Simply ask for the TECCWA account,
present your card and your goods will
be charged out as a trade price COD
item. Thanks to Rob Russell at the
Welshpool store (ph: 9458 9299) for
setting up the account for us.
TECCWA is looking for more sponsors
to help continue its development and to
form a business compendium for its
members. If you have a business,
automotive or otherwise, or have
connections to any companies willing to
offer support, we will appreciate hearing
from
you.
We
offer
“corporate
membership” to businesses wishing to
utilize our club as a business avenue,
and welcome their participation. Contact
Clint Godde for more information.
TECCWA AGM
As mentioned previously, May will be
our first Annual General Meeting. We’re
working to make this event painless as
possible, by securing nominations prior
Page 11
Issue 2
THE TOYBOX
The Official TECCWA Magazine
to the meeting to ensure the briefest of
formalities. As such, the people listed
have nominated for the following
positions:
President: Clint Godde
Secretary: Dave Parody
Treasurer: Rudi Poulose
Motorsport Coordinator: Gene Schneider
Social Coordinator: no nomination… yet!
Website Development: Aaron Francis
Merchandise: Christian Ball
As you can see at the time of issue, we
have no one nominated for a Social
Coordinator role. This is not an issue as
our constitution only specifies the role of
President, Secretary and Treasurer must
be filled at the AGM. In accordance with
our constitution, We have given
ourselves the option to have up to four
other committee members as required
by the club at the time. With this in mind
we’d hope everyone will attend the AGM
without fear of being voted into a role
they hadn’t envisaged—so please
attend!
Equally, you may also like to consider
helping those office bearers in a
supporting role. If you have an interest
in seeing the club hold a particular
function or event, we welcome you to
become more involved in the decision
making process to achieve this. A small
amount of time once a month goes a
long way to ensuring the club is always
progressive with events that are
appreciated by all members and we
welcome your input into applicable
working groups.
The agenda for the meeting has been
set as follows:
Issue 2
January to June 2011
As TECCWA is coming from a steering
committee origin, Clint will chair the
meeting, discuss the previous twelve
months briefly, our current position,
financially, socially, and development
wise, and discuss the future 12 months
for the club. Voting will be by a show of
hands as we elect in the nominated
people to their positions. The newly
elected President will then call for any
other comments of general business, be
fore the meeting will be closed. A light
barbeque will follow at $3pp for a snag
in a bun and a drink from the esky, and
a stickybeak around Doug Edward’s
Toyota collection.
This may be a little different from other
AGMs you may have attended, our aim
is to make the process enjoyable for
everyone. Proxy voting forms will be
forwarded by email only to every
member possible, or through mail by
request only—please contact Clint if you
require any further information.
LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!
Teccwa is looking for a few motivated
people to form a working group to
promote the club through several static
car shows coming up over the next few
months.
The Targa West Rally will again hold
their Langley Park Stage and have a
static car display on Sunday August 28,
2011, which TECCWA will attend. We
had a great time last year watching the
action and wandering through the other
cars displayed so we attending again!
We are also holding our own “Toyota
Car Show” in September on the Swan
River Foreshore.
We will develop
advertising, signage, general show
requirements and positioning for both
events and need your help in doing so, if
you have the time to spare. Experience
is not necessary, enthusiasm is!

No Fuel, No Pistons, …, No Worries—Toyota Sera Electric Vehicle Conversion
By
Aaron Woodward.
part one of two
With petrol prices rising over the $1.50/L
mark, electric vehicles are becoming
more appealing and coupled with the
recent advances in battery technology,
they are also becoming more viable for
a daily mode of transport. After meeting
a few Electric Vehicle (EV) conversion
owners & doing some research on the
internet I decided to try converting a
vehicle to EV myself - how hard could it
be?!
I started by establishing some
performance criteria for the vehicle.
Ideally I wanted a range of at least
100km with the ability to comfortably
cruise at 100km/h for short runs. It had
to have enough power to keep up with
traffic & be able to climb the notorious
Greenmount Hill
as I’m fortunate
enough to live beyond the summit!
The number one problem with electric
vehicles is batteries: they are expensive,
bulky and heavy but there is no getting
away from them (as yet). After crunching
some numbers & reading many
documents on the pros and cons of
different technologies, I resolved to use
Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) cells
– a costly but effective decision - despite
being over half the cost of the entire
project they do have some serious
advantages over the cheaper Lead
Acids, such as:
•
Approximately 3X the energy
density of sealed lead acid batteries.
Page 13
Issue 2
THE TOYBOX
The Official TECCWA Magazine
January to June 2011
•
Zero maintenance, no need to
top up electrolyte.
•
Completely sealed, no nasty
hydrogen
gas
produced
during
operation.
•
Deep discharge (can use over
80% of the cell capacity without
damage)
•
Far longer service life.
The latter was the deal maker.
The manufacturer claims a life cycle of
up to 8 years with 3000 cycles at a 70%
discharge which is more than double the
life cycle of even the best lead acid
batteries.
Considering the costs
involved and space requirements, we
set about looking for a suitable
conversion vehicle - something small,
reasonably light, fairly modern & most
importantly - interesting!
I considered a Mazda MX5 but was
unable to find one within our price range
at the time, plus they were severely
limited in the spare space department
and it had already been done by
someone locally – I wanted something
unique at the end of the day.
After looking at a few other fairly bland
90’s eco-boxes a friend of mine pointed
me to an expired, unsold e-bay listing for
a Toyota Sera. Yes I have to admit I
was somewhat suckered in by the gull
wing doors, however the car ticked all
the
boxes
for
the
conversion
requirements. A few e-mails & phone
calls later I was off over to Victoria to
pick up the vehicle for a sizable road trip
home. The car was re-licensed for WA &
driven around for about a year while we
made measurements & plans to acquire
the necessary components.
The first major build component was the
gearbox adapter plate. We decided to
keep with the original 5 speed box and
install an upgraded clutch assembly.
This allowed the engine to be idled
when the vehicle was stationary, to drive
the accessories if required.
The
gearbox adapter plate was cut out of
Issue 2
Impulse 9 electric motor with adaptor plate fitted
25mm aluminium using a band saw for
the outer shaping. The inner ‘dowel’ was
cut to match the motor lip with a
precision hole cutter on a mill. To obtain
a perfect fit with the gearbox we
machined several small ‘centres’ which
were stuck into the gearbox dowel holes
& onto the input shaft.
By simply
pressing the large plate onto the centres
we could obtain very accurate markings
to drill with. We decided to go with a
Series Wound DC motor arrangement,
as they are relatively cheap & simple in
comparison the brushless DC & AC
induction motors. An “Impulse 9” motor
was selected as it is a proven performer
& is well suited for the weight of the
vehicle. The original flywheel went on
a lathe induced diet with the removal of
the ring gear and a considerable amount
Sectioned crank for use on electric motor output
Page 14

The Official TECCWA Magazine
of the factory casting, before the original
crank end was then cut off and re-used
as a key drive for the motor. After
bolting all the new parts up & rotating
the motor to check for binding, we then
installed the drive line into the engine
bay.
Design & fabrication of the battery
enclosure was our next step. We earlier
established that the best way to install
the batteries was to remove the rear
seats & build a single large steel box. I
would have liked to use aluminium but
the added cost for material & fabrication
hassles outweighed the benefits. The
rear interior trim was removed to aid
measurement taking and work out how
to best utilize the space available. I
wanted to have the enclosure positioned
in a such away that full front seat
adjustment was not impeded but also
kept the batteries between the axles to
minimize potential handling and braking
problems associated with a large shift in
weight distribution. The combined mass
THE TOYBOX
of the batteries & steel would be in
excess of 240Kg - that’s two very large
rear passengers! We came up with a
complex three row stepped design which
enabled the enclosure to be fitted with
minimal modification to the chassis and
could be installed as a single piece
through the door opening.
The enclosure was bent up out of five
pieces of 2.5mm mild steel and then MIG
welded together. There are a series of
rails installed in the base to aid in
support & ventilation of the batteries
along with a pair of 10” fans. We later
discovered, the Department of Transport
frown on having any openings in the
floor of a vehicle so we abandoned the
idea of having the fans vent to the
underside of the car. To date, operation
of the vehicle has never encountered
any significant heating of the cells to
warrant a ventilation system either.
The restraint system for the enclosure
went through several iterations due to
concerns regarding the ability to hold up
Page 15

in the case of an
accident.
Our final
design
as
passed
involved welding quarter
inch brace plates onto
the chassis rails &
enclosure, which were
then attached with high
tensile M10 bolts. I also
added more substantial
mounting brackets (3mm
steel all round) and an
additional 30mm thick
wall box section across
the middle portion of the
enclosure. This has now
become the strongest
structure of the vehicle.
Along with the batteries C.A.D battery box, located behind the front seats of the vehicle
and constructed from mild steel, then engineered.
the enclosure also holds
the
high
voltage
switching & safety mechanisms which Part two of this article will discuss
have been designed in such a way as to battery installation, electric drive system
minimize the presence of high voltage interfacing with the original vehicle
wiring outside the enclosure when the design, charging, performance and
general driving quality features in the
vehicle is off.

TECCWA STEERING
COMMITTEE AND
FUTURE POSITIONS
Clint Godde
The
Ring
Leader
–
responsible
for
the
December BBQ’s that led
to
the
formation
of
TECCWA proper, he has
an unhealthy passion for
GT4 Celica’s, old Crowns
and other makes and
models
(primarily
XA
Falcons and Mustangs). Rumoured to
hoard the best stuff in a shed yet to be
found by mere men.
Dave Parody
The smoking assassin, now
you see him, now you
don’t! A FIFO roster keeps
Dave Busy refilling the
bank accounts that his
significant
other
then
enjoys spending on the
house, to keep him out of
his RA28 Celica. Also likes
to play with fire and water.
Rudi Poulose
The big quiet guy in the
corner, known for his
stealthy appearances at
various events. Can speak
quite quickly when needed,
which when deciphered is
usually an accurate cutting
comment on the state of
discussed play!

“bogan” status with Clint based on the
number of V8 powered vehicles he
owns.

Owner and developer of
“SPIDA”,
the
red
turbocharged TA22 Celica
regularly seen at a lot of
Perth’s motorkhana events
prior to being pulled off the
road last year for a full
rebuild. Stay tuned for
regular reports on SPIDA’s
progress—it’s recently returned from the
paint shop with a new coat of red to
show off.
Aaron Francis
Clint’s right hand man when
it comes to anything to do
with the club, computers
and making things look
snazzy, Aaron has provided
valuable assistance with
the base work of TECCWA.
He recently added weight
through
necessity
dispatching his ZZT231 Celica for a
JZA70 Supra.
Nathan Jones
Clint’s left hand man when
it comes to anything to do
with the club, computers
and making things look
snazzy.
Nathan
currently has time booked
between his busy social
life, and converting his JZA80 Supra to
manual V8 driveline and then fixing the
inevitable new conversion niggles.
As drafted in our constitution, the
TECCWA committee will consist of a
President, Secretary, Treasurer and up
to four additional committee members.

The committee members may be
responsible
for
areas
such
as
Motorsport, Historical, Social and
Newsletter Editor roles in the club and
will be determined on a needs basis.
The steering committee encourages you
to consider making your time available
for one of these positions, as the aim is
to have these positions running in a
finalised structure prior to the AGM in
May 2011, so we can elect our first
committee proper.
