Notes on the Program
By Jeff Tamarkin
Some film and television music integrates
so seamlessly with the action and dialogue
emanating from the screen that many
viewers don’t even consciously notice it;
the score manipulates our visceral
response to the story by not being overbearingly obvious. Then there are the
soundtrack tunes so powerful and memorable that they live on long after the credits
fade. Those are the ones that have captivated Bill Frisell all of his life. During his
youth in Denver, watching the films of
Alfred Hitchcock and the Disney and
James Bond classics, as well as the iconic
TV sitcoms and dramas of the 1960s and
1970s, Frisell absorbed the accompanying
music, along with jazz, rock, and the other
genres that would influence his own
music. To him the compositions of Bernard
Herrmann, Henry Mancini, Nino Rota, and
Ennio Morricone are seminal, as are the
catchy theme songs from the likes of All in
the Family and The Dick Van Dyke Show.
“The idea of building a concert around this
music snuck up on me,” says the worldclass guitarist. “I started to think about how
many songs I play that are from movies and
I got really excited about the idea of putting
a bunch of them together. These songs
have such a strong association with the
films they are from, but if you take them out
of that context and just look at the tune,
they’re strong and are fun to play.”
Even as he formulated the idea for the Jazz at
Lincoln Center concerts—part of the Roots of
Americana series he’s been curating—Frisell
knew exactly with whom he wanted to share
the stage. He and violinist/vocalist Petra
Haden had already recorded a duets album
in 2003 that included the Disney perennial
“When You Wish Upon a Star,” and Haden
(daughter of the late bass giant Charlie
Haden) released an album of film songs on
her own in 2013. Bassist Thomas Morgan
played with Frisell and Haden on the late
drummer Paul Motian’s 2011 album The
Windmills of Your Mind, the title track of
which was popularized via the 1968 film
The Thomas Crown Affair. And Frisell has
worked before with both violist Eyvind
Kang and drummer Rudy Royston. “This
combination of people seemed a natural
way to go,” says Frisell. “We did a gig in
San Francisco where it was all of these
people together and it felt really great.”
For Frisell, making a piece from a film or
television program his own involves more
than simply imitating a familiar tune. “I try
to get close not just to the melody and the
chords but to the horn and string parts that
were in the original versions,” he says. “I
love to find those things and then when we
have that information in front of us, it gets
really interesting.”
However his own interpretations end up
sounding on the night of these concerts,
for Frisell, maintaining a healthy respect for
the original music remains a paramount
concern. “When I think about my favorite
film music, like Morricone’s score for Once
Upon a Time in the West, I can’t separate it
from the movie. Or in Breakfast at
Tiffany’s—Mancini’s incidental music
toward the end where it’s getting real dark
and emotional is just awesome. The music
becomes a part of it,” he says.
“I like music that draws things out of me
that I wouldn’t normally do,” he adds,
“and I like when people just get carried
away. I get immersed in the music, and
hopefully when I do the audience comes
along with me.”

Meet the Artists
Bill Frisell
Bill Frisell’s (Music Director, Guitar ) career
as a guitarist and composer has spanned
more than 35 years and many celebrated
recordings. His catalog has been cited by
DownBeat as “the best recorded output of
the decade” and includes his recent
albums for Savoy—Sign of Life with the
858 Quartet, Beautiful Dreamers, All We
Are Saying, a collection of John Lennon
interpretations—and his debut release for
OKeh/Sony Masterworks, Big Sur, featuring music commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival and composed at the
Glen Deven Ranch in Big Sur.
Frisell’s latest project, GUITAR IN THE
SPACE AGE!, is an homage to the inspirational popular music of his formative years
made in the wake of “the birth of the Fender
Telecaster guitar” (1951, the same year as
Frisell’s own birth). Frisell and his band
mates explore material on the OKeh/Sony
Masterworks release associated with The
Beach Boys, Junior Wells, Pete Seeger, The
Byrds, Duane Eddy, The Ventures, The
Kinks, Chet Atkins, Link Wray, Speedy
West & Jimmy Bryant, The Astronauts,
Merle Travis, Johnny Smith, and others, as
well as original material by Frisell.
Frisell’s Nonesuch output spans a wide
range of musical expression, from original
Buster Keaton film scores, to arrangements
for extended ensembles with horns and
strings (Blues Dream, History, Mystery,
Unspeakable); collaborations with bassist
Viktor Krauss and drummer Jim Keltner
(Gone, Just Like a Train, Good Dog, Happy
Man); an album with Nashville musicians
(Nashville); a solo album (Ghost Town); a
collection of traditional American folk songs
and originals inspired by them (The Willies);
and two trio albums with jazz legends—
Dave Holland/Elvin Jones and Ron Carter/
Paul Motian. The Intercontinentals blends
Frisell’s brand of American roots music with
Brazilian, Greek, and Malian influences.
Disfarmer was inspired by the work of the
mid-century rural Arkansas photographer
Mike Disfarmer.
Recognized as one of America’s 21 most
vital and productive performing artists,
Frisell was named an inaugural Doris Duke
Artist in 2012. He is also a recipient of
grants from United States Artists and Meet
the Composer, among others. Currently he
is the guest curator for the Roots of
Americana series at Jazz at Lincoln Center
and recently completed an appointment as
resident artistic director at San Francisco
Jazz. Frisell is managed by Songline/Tone
Field Productions.
Petra Haden
Petra Haden (Vocals) was born into a musical family, one of the triplet daughters of
the late legendary jazz bassist Charlie
Haden. She played violin as a child and
then started playing again when she was
20. She has since played with some of the
most renowned musicians in alternative
jazz and rock.
Haden’s love of instruments has enabled
her to provide unique voices to her singular
blend of pop, jazz, and classical music,
develop complex arrangements in her head
to interpret a wide variety of eclectic music,
and re-create the sounds of the instruments
with her own voice.
Her first two releases, 1994’s self-titled
debut and 1995’s Totally Crushed Out,
were lo-fi affairs filled with loud guitars and
complex vocal harmonies. In 1997 she
released Retreat From the Sun with a

catchier, more poppy sound. Her group
soon disbanded, but Haden recorded her
first solo album, Imaginaryland, in 1996. It
largely consisted of her a cappella voice collages, featuring both original songs and
cover songs. Bella Neurox was released in
1999, a collaborative instrumental album
with accordionist/photographer Alicia Rose.
In the ensuing decade, Haden accompanied artists such as Foo Fighters, Green
Day, Bette Midler, Sean Lennon, and
Victoria Williams. She has also worked with
her sisters, fellow triplets Rachel and
Tanya, releasing The Haden Triplets, a new
album produced by Ry Cooder. She met
The Decemberists while sharing a bill at
SXSW in 2005 and spent most of the year
touring with them. In 2005 she also
released Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell
Out, a reimagining of the seminal album by
The Who, using only her voice in the place
of instruments. 2005 also saw the release
of a duet recording with jazz guitarist Bill
Frisell, titled Petra Haden and Bill Frisell.
More recently, Haden released Petra Goes
to the Movies, a collection of her renditions
of favorites from the silver screen.
Eyvind Kang
Eyvind Kang (Viola) has worked extensively
with Bill Frisell and Laurie Anderson, and
he has written arrangements for Sunn O))),
Blonde Redhead, and many others. Kang
has also released many acclaimed albums
of original music, including the choral piece
Athlantis (2007), The Yelm Sessions (2007),
and Virginal Co-ordinates (2004). His
teachers have included legendary jazz violinist Michael White, Dr. N. Rajam, and Dr.
Hossein Omoumi.
Thomas Morgan
Thomas Morgan (Bass) is a double bass
player with a unique approach to the
instrument and an exceptional musical
understanding. He has recorded and toured
extensively all over the world as a member
of Paul Motian’s bands, the John
Abercrombie Quartet, the Dave Binney
Quartet, Steve Coleman and Five
Elements, and the Tomasz Stanko New
York Quartet, among many others. It is
Thomas’ extraordinary way of being in the
moment in music and putting his own signature on it that has made him one of the
most in demand jazz bassists on the international scene today. He has played on
more than seventy recordings and is currently touring with the Craig Taborn Trio,
Jakob Bro, the Jim Black Trio, the Dan
Weiss Trio, the Scott DuBois Quartet, and
many others.
Rudy Royston
A native of Ft. Worth, Texas, Rudy Royston
(Drums) was raised in Denver, Colorado.
He studied classical percussion at the
University of Denver. While in college,
Royston began playing with trumpeter Ron
Miles, whom Royston deems his greatest
teacher and music mentor. It was on Ron
Miles’ recording Woman’s Day that
Royston first played with Bill Frisell. A
major figure in the Denver music scene,
Royston performed with artists such as
Dotsero, Leslie Drayton, Joe Keel, and
Nelson Rangell. He began teaching music
in public schools before relocating to the
East Coast. In 2006 he moved to New
Jersey to pursue graduate studies in music
at Rutgers University, studying jazz percussion with Victor Lewis. Since moving,
Royston has begun performing steadily
with Bill Frisell in quartet and trio settings.
He quickly integrated into the New York
music scene, performing with Javon
Jackson, Les McCann, JD Allen, Sean
Jones, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Jennifer Holiday,
Ralph Bowen, Bruce Barth, Don Byron,
Jason Moran, and Jenny Scheinman, to
name a few. A lover of all genres of music,
Royston continues to expand his horizons
as he gains increasing recognition in the

world of jazz.

Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Live in Cuba Exhibit
On View Now
Free and open to the public during scheduled performances
In celebration of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Jazz Across the Americas season, our
current exhibit—Live in Cuba—tells the story of the Jazz at Lincoln Center
Orchestra’s week-long residency in Cuba in October, 2010. This historic tour
included five performances at the Teatro Mella in Havana, Cuba, in addition to
educational workshops throughout the country. The exhibit, located on the fifth floor
of Frederick P. Rose Hall, features the photography of Frank Stewart and Ayano
Hisa, plus rare video footage from the tour. In addition to an illustrious and
international career as a professional photographer, Frank Stewart serves as senior
staff photographer for Jazz at Lincoln Center. Ayano Hisa, a 2013 fellow of the New
York Foundation for the Arts, is a freelance photographer whose clients include Jazz
at Lincoln Center, Newport Jazz Festival, and Savannah Music Festival. Please stop
by the free exhibit to learn more!

ROSE THEATER
Duke, Dizzy, ‘Trane & Mingus: Jazz Titans
January 29–31 at 8pm
The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton
Marsalis presents music of the Americas through the
lens of four pioneering giants of jazz, Duke Ellington,
Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, and Charles Mingus.
The Orchestra will play selections from Ellington’s
Latin American Suite and Virgin Islands Suite;
Coltrane’s Olé Coltrane and Africa Brass; Mingus’
Tijuana Moods; and various pieces from Gillespie’s
early Afro-Cuban era through his later work with the
United Nations band. These concerts will illuminate
the historically important rhythmic distinctions, chantbased melodies, and modal soundscapes created as a
result of these albums that forever changed the conception of the boundaries of jazz.
Free pre-concert discussion nightly at 7pm.

the lens of swing. Irby will cover Chicago (Gene
Ammons and Johnny Griffin), Kansas City (Count Basie
and Charlie Parker), West Coast cool jazz (Chet Baker
and Dave Brubeck), New Orleans (Buddy Bolden and
Jelly Roll Morton), New York City (Art Blakey, Horace
Silver, and Freddie Hubbard), and more. Joining Irby
Victor Goines, Bruce Harris, Vincent Gardner, Eli Bishop,
James Chirillo, Charles Craig, Sr., Gerald Cannon, and
Alvester Garnett.

Elio Villafranca’s Music of the Caribbean
Featuring Jon Faddis and Leyla McCalla
February 20 at 9:30pm
February 21 at 7pm
Elio Villafranca possesses a unique gift of creating
music that fuses jazz with his extensive knowledge of
percussion and Latin rhythms. With his band the Jass
Syncopators and special guests Jon Faddis and Leyla
McCalla, Villafranca will present Cinqué-Suite of the
Caribbean, a debut six-movement work focusing on
the influences of the Congolese traditions of rhythms,
melodies, and dances through the music of Puerto
Rico, Santo Domingo, Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba, with
Congolese drumming and costumed dancers.
Free pre-concert discussions, 6pm (2/21) & 8:30pm (2/20).
Family Concert: Who is Billie Holiday?
February 7 at 1pm & 3pm
Lady Day is one of the most distinctly recognizable
voices of the 20th century. This family concert will
introduce budding enthusiasts to the woman with the
gardenia in her hair, whose highly individualized artistry
and embodiment of the blues influenced jazz and popular song indelibly. Aaron Diehl, a pianist The New York
Times calls a “revelation,” will serve as musical director. Vocalist Charenee Wade, who has been making
waves on the New York jazz scene and beyond, continues to ascend as an impressive and necessary voice
in jazz. As part of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Billie Holiday
Festival honoring her centennial, this concert celebrates both her music and her story as a courageous,
exquisite, and singular cultural icon.
Free pre-concert activities at 12:15pm and 2:15pm.
Dianne Reeves
February 13–14 at 8pm
One of the most recognized voices in jazz, Dianne
Reeves coalesces her signature sound, broad-spectrum repertoire, and fondness for love songs into a
very special Valentine’s Day weekend performance.
Reeves has long revered the city of New York, and
not too many cities top the Big Apple when it comes
to romance, making Rose Theater the perfect place to
revel in the occasion. Her latest CD, Beautiful Life,
was a perfectly timed Valentine’s Day release in 2014,
given the sensual essence of both original songs and
covers of Marvin Gaye and Bob Marley. Reeves will
assuredly set the mood for what is becoming a Jazz
at Lincoln Center tradition; for the second year in a
row, the most awarded female jazz vocalist of all time
treats audiences to an intimate evening of music and
storytelling, delivered as only she can.
