This month the Montreal Judging Centre is coming to town! If you’ve ever
wondered how and why orchids are awarded, the Montreal Judging Centre
will be conducting a judging session live before our very eyes. This is a great
opportunity to know what really happens behind the scenes and to have your
plant judged. And who knows, perhaps YOUR plant could be awarded an
FCC!
ORCHIDS 201 -
12:30 to 1:00 pm sharp - Topic: Orchid Challenges and Solutions.
Members participating in this session are invited to bring one ailing
plant for diagnosis and suggested remedies. The emphasis here is not
primarily on pests but on challenges with orchid culture. Orchids should
be carried in clear plastic bags.
Don’t forget to bring your blooming orchids for display on the monthly show
table.

A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT (AND EDITOR)
2010 ended on a great note with Glen Decker of Piping Rock
Orchids (Galway, New York) being our December speaker .
Glen gave an excellent presentation on the culture of Paphs.
and Phrags. He brought an excellent assortment of quality
Paphs. and Phrags. for sale at great prices so Christmas
came early for many members buying plants for themselves.
Glen donated generously to our Christmas raffle table and is
shown on the right drawing the first raffle ticket from Janet
Sutherland’s bright red bag of raffle tickets. Standing to the
back of Glen is Mario Mireault of Les Orchidophiles de
Montréal who helped Glen with the sale of his plants. Glen sold
most of his plants and gave a lot of growing tips to folks buying
his plants. The raffle table was covered with lots of wonderful
Christmas presents donated by members and there was lots to
eat thanks to the generosity of members who brought store
bought goodies as well as delicious home-made foods. Sam Chan made a delicious Chinese noodle dish that was
absolutely delicious. There were homemade cookies, babkas, wonderful cookies, smoked salmon, Swedish
meatballs, meat spreads, exotic cheeses, chocolates, and many, many more different foods and treats. Thank you
one and all for your contributions and making the December meeting a wonderful and memorable day. Photo taken

We are a little more than 3 months away from our annual show being held the Easter weekend of April 23-24, 2011.
The first show committee meeting is will be held this coming Wednesday evening. Now is a good time to look at
what you have growing in your orchid collection and prepare your spring blooming orchids for our show. Hope you
have something to bring to displa y, either in the Society exhibit or perhaps you may wish to erect your own personal
display. If you are thinking of displaying but are not sure how to go about it, we have numerous orchid shows
coming up in various parts of southern Ontario and in Quebec over the next 3 months. There is an orchid show in
th
Toronto this coming Feb. 12-13 . Joyce Medcalf and Marlene Young will be erecting the Ottawa Orchid Society
display at this show. They will be looking for plants from members for the OOS display. If you h ave something,
please don’t hesitate to make your plant(s) available. Further on in the newsletter we have instructions on what to
do and how the plants can get to Joyce and Marlene. So, if you are looking for exhibit ideas, take a trip to the

Toronto show or one of the many other orchid shows occurring between now and April 23 . Details on this and the
other upcoming shows may be found further on in this newsletter.
This Sunday meeting is a special event with a large group of AOS judges coming to our mee ting to explain and
show how the AOS judging system works. If you have any blooming orchids that you think are really nice or you
have something that is unusual or not commonly seen, bring your plant(s) to the Sunday show table. Your plant
may be pulled for AOS judging and it may even win an award!
Has your orchid collection grown too large and you would like to reduce your collection? Perhaps you need to make
room in your grow area for some of the great new hybrids coming into the marketplace?
Do you have orchids that have become too big and you need to divide your plant and you
don’t know what to do with the divisions? Next month, we will be holding our annual
Society auction. How about contributing some of these plants to the Society auction? Do
you have books on orchids you no longer want? Has your home undergone a “makeover”
and your orchid paintings, prints or framed photos no longer fit your décor? Have you
switched to using different orchid fertilizer and don’t know what to do with other stuff you
bought and no longer want? Have any orchid jewelry no longer being worn? Bring these
items to the February meeting. We need your donations. The money raised is used to
bring speakers from faraway places to our monthly meetings and to support a number of
other activities beneficial to our Society or of interest to members . We have a lot of fun
with the auction. If you don’t have anything to donate, do not hesitate to participate by
bidding! If you have never been to an auction, I will be happy to instruct you how to raise
your arm to bid and tell you when you can drop your arm.

The 4th International Orchid Conservation Congress
The following information was provided by Marilyn Light.
The 4th International Orchid Conservation Congress “Orchids in a
Changing World” is planned for May 29 to June 4, 2011 in Hluboká, Czech
Republic. Field trips to orchid-rich sites in the Czech Republic will be featured
where participants will have the opportunity to both see orchid habitats and
speak with conservation managers. There is an optional 2-day trip to the
Carpathian Mountain region (Bilé Karpaty) after the conference. This is an
excellent opportunity to share your experiences and perspectives, and to see a
wealth of orchids and other plants growing in interesting landscapes. For more

PLANTS for Southern Ontario Orchid Society (SOOS) SHOW – Feb. 12-13th, 2011
Marlene Young and Joyce Medcalf will be erecting the Ottawa Orchid
Society (OOS) display at the upcoming Toronto orchid show to be held at the
Toronto Botanical Garden, Edwards Gardens located at 775 & 777 Lawrence
Avenue East at Leslie Street in Toronto. Marlene and Joyce will require blooming
orchid plants from members for the OOS display. If you have plants that you wish to
make available for the exhibit, please note the instructions below. We thank you
ahead of time for your contributions. This is a Society effort and your plant loan is
very much appreciated. Please note that space in Joyce’s vehicle is limited and it
may not be possible to accommodate large sized plants. If you are not sure if your
plant could be accommodated, please contact Joyce before dropping off your
plant(s) at either one of the drop off sites noted below. We apologize ahead of time
should we not be able to transport your plant due to size or unavailability of space.

Plants will be returned to Rick's house, Monday, Feb.14 . Rick will return the plants picked up from Janet soon
thereafter. Please call Rick / Margaret or Janet to arrange a suitable time to pick up your plants!
It would be appreciated if members follow the instructions below if providing plants for the OOS exhibit:
1 - Put your name on the pot - on the back or underneath of the orchid pot / container;
2 - Put your name and list of plants INSIDE the box AND on the OUTSIDE of the box;
3 - Include the parentage of hybrids, if known;
4 - Please ensure the name on the plant tag is spelled correctly;
5 - Pack plants carefully so they are protected from wobbling and from the winter elements during transport. Stake
for transport and for best display, as appropriate;
6 - Please, please no extraneous decorative pots! (We will not use them and do not want to lose them.)
7 - Please clean the foliage - use water or water with a little milk. Never use plant shine products
8 - Remove any damaged / old flowers and leaves;
9 - Check well for bugs!

even 'possible' plants, so I can research them.

Blooming orchids on our monthly show table continue to be one of the
best parts to our monthly meetings and bring much pleasure to
many of our members and visitors coming to a monthly meeting for
the first time. We recognize the tremendous work that goes into
growing these fine plants and appreciate very much the effort you
make pulling your orchids from their grow areas and transporting
them to monthly meetings, in good weather and bad and sometimes
under difficult or stressful circumstances. We thank you for sharing
your beautiful plants with us. It is truly very much appreciated by us
all!

RECOMMENDED BOOK
I was reading the January 2011 newsletter published by the
Orchid Society of Alberta (OSA) and came across a book review
by Ben Rostron which may be of interest to OOS members. The
book is titled Paphiopedilum of Taiwan IV, published by the
Taiwan Paphiopedilum Society, 2006. Ben writes…”this book
consists of about 250 pages of full-colour photographs of
Paphiopedilums selected by the Taiwan Paphiopedilum Society to
showcase the award-winning and widely acclaimed orchids of the
TPS’s monthly contests. The first half of the book contains
photographs and descriptions of species and hybrid Paphs
awarded Bronze and Silver Medals by the TPS. The second half
of the book is the “flower appreciation” section that contains
hundreds of photos of species and hybrid Paphs, and even
some Phragmipediums for good measure. This is an excellent book that has something for everyone. If you want to
see what “award quality” means in Taiwan -- or, see photographs of Paph species including those not legally
available in North America -- or, peruse the latest hybrids (made with species you’ve never heard of) -- or even drool
over the vendor advertisements…”, then this is a book to get. Ben spent hours looking at this book, and wished he

The dates are final! The 20th World Orchid Conference will be held in
Singapore from 13 - 20 November 2011.
In line with our mission to ensure that this event will inspire all to even
greater orchid heights, the 20th WOC will be held at the brand new Marina
Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre, a venue touted to redefine the
exhibition and meeting experience.
The committee is excited about bringing the 20th WOC to you. As with
tradition, the Conference will run over four days (13 - 16 November
inclusive), while the Orchid Show will run throughout the 10 days, starting
from 13 November.
And the best news of all – registration for both the Conference portion as
well as the Orchid Show is NOW OPEN!

scientific papers in two parallel sessions with a range of general interest presentations in a further session.

Orchid Show registration
The Orchid Show promises to be a feast for the senses with live displays of orchids, decorative art featuring

orchids, botanical illustration, photography, jewellery, ceramics and glass, badges, and postage stamps to
name but a few. As with tradition, the Orchid Show is open to the general public. For those wishing to share
your Orchid display talents, the Orchid Show registration is now open to exhibitors for landscape displays.
The deadline for submission of concept design is 31 March 2011. Successful applicants will be notified by the
organising committee after 30 April 2011.
Judging
All efforts going into showcasing your display talents will not go unnoticed. Awards, including Ribbons, Medals
and Trophies, will be given to the best plants and displays in the Orchid Show. World Orchid Conferences are
rightly regarded as the "Olympics of the Orchid World", and we expect the standard of entries of displays and
plants at the 20th World Orchid Conference in Singapore to be very high indeed.
The task of selecting from amongst the many thousands of plants and the dozens of displays, to award the best
of the best, falls on the Orchid Judges of the 20th World Orchid Conference.
If you have an eye for details, we are now seeking applications for Judges.
