He also was a four-time conference finalist in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly and currently ranks 13th all-time in points scored with 678. Hauber also owns the third fastest time in both the 100 and 200 backstroke as well as the 100 and 200 IM. Hauber’s coaching experience includes five years as head coach for the QUIK swim club and five seasons as an assistant coach at Honeoye Falls-Lima High School. In addition to assisting with the Golden Flyers, Hauber assists Rick Aronberg with the Greater Rochester Racing Raiders (GRRR) swim club. In the summer of 2001, Aronberg was the assistant coach for the USA National Swim team that competed in Israel. Among the athletes he coached was three-time Olympic champion Lenny Krayzelburg in addition to 15 other national swimmers. Five years ago, Aronberg was the head coach for the United States Team that competed in Mexico City at the Pan American Maccabi Games. His swimmers brought back 92 medals, including 42 golds, in four days of competition, outdistancing second-place Mexico by 40 medals. Nazareth Assistant Coach Jameson Nicolazzo Back for his third season as an assistant coach, Jameson Nicolazzo plays a key role in the Golden Flyers strength and conditioning. A 2002 Nazareth graduate, Nicolazzo was the school recordholder in the 100 butterfly, a mark that has since been broken. He also was a four-time conference scorer in the 100 butterfly and currently ranks 12th all-time in points scored with 700. He ranks second all-time in the 100 fly and 6th all time in the 200 fly. Nicolazzo assists the Golden Flyers in all areas of strength training, a role he also fills at the BayView YMCA in Webster, N.Y. A native of Fairport, Aronberg is well known in the Rochester area as a former standout swimmer at Fairport High, where he was a seven-time high school All-American. He went on to become a four-time Division I All-American at Clemson University in the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyles. He was a six-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion, and still holds Clemson records in the 500- , 1,000-, and 1,650-yard freestyles. He was named Clemson’s swimming MVP in each of his four seasons there. In 2002, Aronberg was inducted into the Clemson University Athletic Hall of Fame and was named to the ACC 50th Anniversary team as one of the best swimmers in conference history. He also was selected to Frontier Field’s Walk of Fame. A member of the Rochester Athletic Hall of Fame, Aronberg participated in the United States Olympic Trials in 1988 in the 200, 400, and 1500 freestyles and was chosen to compete with the United States team in the Maccabiah Games in Israel in 1985 and 1989. He won 11 medals, including nine gold, and was chosen to be the captain of the United States men’s team in 1989. He was also ranked first in the world that year in the 400-meter freestyle. In addition to coaching swimming and diving, Aronberg serves as the aquatics director at Nazareth and is the head coach of the Greater Rochester Racing Raiders swim club. Aronberg was joined at Nazareth this fall by his son Jon. He resides in Farmington, N.Y. with his wife, Laurie and son Ryan. Nazareth Diving Head Coach Dave Marsh As a coach, Marsh has enjoyed similar success. As a club coach, he has helped train several athletes who have attended the national competitions. Also, he has coached many of the local high school teams in Rochester and has helped seven divers make it to the finals of the New York state high school championships and numerous divers make the Section Five championship finals. 3 D I V I N G Back for his second season as an assistant coach with the Nazareth swimming and diving program, Jack Hauber is no stranger to the Golden Flyers. Aronberg, in his 11th season at Nazareth, is beginning to reap the rewards of his hard work, determination, and patience, all of which he hopes will enable him to realize his long-range goal. “Our goal”, he said, “is to have Nazareth competing at Nationals year after year.” Dave Marsh is no stranger to Nazareth College as he became the head coach of the Golden Flyers diving team in 2001. Marsh was a diver for Nazareth from 1994-1996. In those years, he helped lead the Golden Flyers to many impressive victories and, as a senior in 1996, qualified for the NCAA championships in Oxford, Ohio. He was also awarded the team MVP in 1996. He still holds scoring records for 1-meter diving (274.20 for six dives and 425.65 for 11 dives). & Nazareth Assistant Coach Jack Hauber Excitement and enthusiasm. There has been a shortage of neither since Rick Aronberg has been the coach of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams at Nazareth College. Aronberg came to Nazareth in 1993, and in his first year helped Kim Schneider win a national championship in the 100 butterfly, making her Nazareth’s first-ever national swimming champion and the program’s second champion overall. Under Aronberg’s leadership, Nazareth has risen steadily in both the men’s and women’s Empire 8 Conference standings. Aronberg also has had at least one individual qualify for the NCAA championships in each of his previous 10 seasons as coach, including 2003 graduate and five time All American Cheryl Roubian. Also during Aronberg’s tenure, the women’s team has achieved Academic-All American status 20 straight semesters and the men’s team achieved the honor in 18 of 19 semesters. Here’s a look at what’s in store for 2003-04: The Nazareth Men’s team finished 3-6 in 2002-03 and closed out the season with a solid effort at the Empire 8 Conference championships. Here a a look at 2003-04: Sprint Freestyle: Junior Melanie Gorenflo returns as the team’s top sprinter after placing ninth in the 50 free at the E8 championships. Nazareth coach Rick Aronberg will look to sophomore Lindsay Slocum to provide depth. Sprint Freestyle: Sophomore Chris Fello, the team’s top scorer at the conference championships, returns to anchor the short freestyle events. Freshman Tim Baker is a promising newcomer along with Gabe Casey. Distance Free: This could be one of the team’s deepest areas thanks to the return of senior Jackie Crossett (188 points) and sophomore Margie Bowen, each of whom reached the E8 conference finals in the 1,650 free last season. Junior Rachelle Matthews, sophomore Jen Migliore, and freshman Amy Mehltretter add to the mix, giving the Golden Flyers depth that few area teams can match. Distance Freestyle: Another strong area for the men’s team, featuring sophomores Tom Mitchell, Matt Muratore (193.25 points), and Alex Strazewski. Backstroke: Fello, who finished second in scoring with 214.50 points in 2002-03, posted the team’s best times in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke last season and has his sights set on the conference finals in 2004. Senior captain Justin Montemarano has improved steadily each year and will be backed by junior Chris Pede. Backstroke: The graduation loss of five-time All- American Cheryl Roubian creates a huge hole, but Aronberg believes that junior Laura Tyler (third on the team with 226.75 points last season) can step in and be a contributor at the conference championships. Slocum also will compete here along with sophomore Kelly Robinson. Breaststroke: Montemarano and junior Paul Osetek each swam well at last year’s conference championships and should continue to improve. Butterfly: Sophomore Dan Paganin is coming off a solid first season and will look to reach the conference finals in both the 100- and 200- yard butterfly. Fello and Muratore provide valuable depth. Breaststroke: Sophomore Jen Meldrum (163.75 points) was a pleasant surprise here in 2002-03, finishing sixth and eighth respectively in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events at the E8 championships. The versatile Tyler should contribute here as well, along with senior Amanda Smith and freshman Meghan Rosinski. Diving: Junior Mike Bond (178.75 points), who finished seventh in both the 1- and 3-meter events at the E8 championships, will look to perform even better in 2003-04 with assistance from sophomore Derek Ortiz. Butterfly: Migliore and Tyler figure to be the pack leaders here with help from newcomers Rosinski and Alida Murphy. Diving: The graduation of two-time conference champion and four-time NCAA qualifier Kristie Kern was a big loss, but Aronberg sees freshman Courtney Koscinski as a solid replacement. captains are bolded Head Coach: Rick Aronberg / Assistant Coaches: Jack Hauber, Jameson Nicolazzo / Diving Coach: Dave Marsh The Nazareth swimming facility has been home to the Golden Flyers men’s and women’s teams since 1977. 5 6 2 0 0 3 - 2 0 0 4 W O M E N ’ S N A Z A R E T H T E A M P R O S W I M M I N G F I L E & D I V I N G 2 0 0 3 - 2 0 0 4 S W O M E N ’ S N A Z A R E T H T E A M P JENNIFER MIGLIORE Sophomore / Eden, New York R B E S T T I 100 breast 200 breast 200 IM M E S A R E E Sophomore / Newfield, New York Born: 3/23/84... Founded in 1924 by the Sisters of St. Joseph, Nazareth has been independent for more than 30 years. 2003-04 Tuition F O R M A T & I O D I V I N G N Room and board (various plans available) $17,020 $7,400 Fees $516 Total $24,936 Nazareth’s Athletic Mission and Philosophy Academic Highlights The Nazareth College Athletic Department will strive to empower its student-athletes to grow as people and make a positive impact on society, with life-skills development, mentoring, and leadership opportunities through competitive and cooperative experiences. • During the past 16 years, 24 Nazareth students have won Fulbright grants to carry out research, teach, and study in countries around the world. Few colleges and universities in the nation can match Nazareth's record of preparing students for success in the Fulbright competition – the U.S. government's most prestigious scholarship program. The Athletic Department is committed to assisting in the college’s mission of educating students with a goal of fostering lifelong commitment to intellectual, ethical and aesthetic values. The Athletic Department will operate under firm institutional control of the college and will always place the health and welfare of the student-athletes, coaches and staff first in decisions regarding the athletics program. • Nazareth has a distinguished history of teacher preparation with nearly 1,700 graduates currently teaching in Monroe County classrooms. • Nazareth features an array of health professions programs, including a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Music Therapy, Art Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology, and Physical Therapy. The department will operate under the NCAA Division III philosophy, through which academics are the student’s first priority and sportsmanship, fair play, diversity and ethical conduct are constantly taught and promoted. • The Nazareth College Arts Center, which houses the departments of Theatre Arts, Music, and Art, has welcomed more than two million people to performances since it opened in 1967. Campus Expansion Community Service In 2000, Nazareth contracted to purchase 73 acres of property and buildings adjacent to the current campus from the college's founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph. This opportunity doubles the size of the campus and will enable the college to shape its future in ways previously unimaginable. Ninety-one percent of Nazareth undergraduates participate in community service projects while they are students. In addition, Nazareth offers an on-campus Center for Service Learning, which serves as a resource for students seeking volunteer placements and for faculty who want to incorporate service into the curriculum. A three-phase master plan that will be implemented over the next five to seven years, will integrate the existing campus with the newly acquired property into one seamless and architecurally consistent landscape. New academic programs, including a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, and Information Technology have been joined by new athletic programs in cross country, equestrian, softball, and track and field. Alumni Seventy-five percent of Nazareth's 23,000 alumni reside in New York state. Nearly 70 percent are employed in service professions including education, health care, child care, social work, and counseling. Athletic Highlights Undergraduate enrollment is projected to reach 2,000 students within the next five years. • The average grade-point average of student-athletes for the spring 2003 semester was 3.06. Faculty Full-time 140 Part-time 69 Student/Faculty Ratio • A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Nazareth has 21 intercollegiate teams that compete at the Division III level. Nazareth also competes in the Empire 8 Conference with Alfred, Elmira, Hartwick, Ithaca, RIT, St. John Fisher, and Utica. 12:1 • Nazareth's men's lacrosse team won national championships in 1992, 1996, and 1997. Ninety-four percent of full-time faculty have received the highest professional degree in their field. • Nazareth finished 66th in the 2002-03 NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) standings for Division III for its second highest finish ever. The Golden Flyers were represented in NCAA Tournaments in women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, women’s swimming, and men’s lacrosse. Enrollment Full-time undergraduate enrollment for the fall of 2003 will be approximately 1,720. That number increases to about 3,100 with the inclusion of part-time and graduate students. There are more than 1,100 students living on campus. Admission The 2002-03 freshman class had a mean SAT score of 1131. Over 31 percent finished in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class; 70 percent ranked in the top 25 percent. Contact the Nazareth Admissions Office at (585) 389-2860 or toll-free at (800) 462-3944 to find out more about the admission process, including financial aid opportunities, to attend an open house, or to arrange for a campus tour. 22
