BOYS
A big welcome back to the winners circle for our
General Manager David O’Donovan after a 9 month
layoff following knee surgery. He won by virtue of a
better B6 from Steffan O’Hara who held off Kieran
McDonagh on the B9. David got off to a great start
with birdies on the 1st, 4th, and 7th . His only blemish
being a bogey on the 3rd where he drove into the
bunker. On the back nine he bogeyed the 11th,
16th and 18th so it all rounded off to a 72 gross. David
notes that “ someone remarked to me since I got my
knee done that I am not able to hit it as wild as I used
to”. So every cloud as they say !!
A great win by Tom Ford (pic left) in the Sunday Singles
with 38 points from Kevin Dufficy in 2nd with 37 points.
Tom birdied the 3rd and the 12th and dropped shots on
4, 10, 13 & 15. A great finish however into the wind of
par par and birdie on 18 sealed the deal.
Tom reliably tells me that he is a descendent of the
outlaw Bob Ford who killed his gang leader Jesse
James. So there is a history of bandits in the Ford
family!
The 36-hole Sean Fallon Scratch Cup for boys with a handicap of 10 or less was played on Sunday Sept
27th on the championship course. Difficult cold and windy morning conditions left the scoring high with most
players improving in the afternoon round. The winner was 2015 boys Captain, David Brady with excellent
rounds of 73 and 75 while defending champion Conor Wynne finished in the runner-up spot.
1st David Brady 148;
2nd Conor Wynne 158;
3rd Cian Feeney 159.

SCORE CARDS
Immediately after finishing his round a
player, R Day, returns the card shown.
a) May the hole numbers 8 & 9 be
altered if the scores have been recorded
in the wrong boxes?
b) Does the alteration for the score on
hole 17 have to be initialled by the player
and/or the marker?
c) The player has calculated the total
score for the back nine holes incorrectly.
Do the Committee have to accept this
higher total or must they correct it?
d) The player has signed in the space
provided for the marker and vice versa.
Is this acceptable?
e) Is the initialling of the score card by
the marker and/or competitor sufficient?

Revitalisation Work has started on the extension of the 7th green. Pat Ruddy was in for two days to build the new part of the green.
The green and surrounds have now been shaped out and is almost ready for seeding. New pipe work for the irrigation is being
installed today and will hopefully be working by the end of this week. Seeding of the green will be done on Wednesday with the
surrounds being seeded by the end of this week. The new 8th Tee will be turfed and should be ready for use come the west. Next work
to get started will be on the 3rd approach and should start around the 19th October. A new tee has been installed at the 5th to the left of
the shelter. This tee will be used during the week in winter play. This will give members a different feel of the hole. This tee is only a
small tee put will be ok for the winter.. The new 3rd Green has been Hollow cored last week and will be overseeded this week
and sanded. I am trying to push this green on to get it ready for opening in March next year. The surround is also
getting topdressed and working on to get ready.
Greens The Greens have been running consistent over the past couple weeks running around 9ft on the stim which would be a little
slow. This should improve over the next couple weeks with doing a little brushing and double cutting which will give a better cut. Greens
are still being cut at 4.5mm in height which will give the new fescue seed the best chance. It is important to keep the greens as strong
as possible with good grass coverage leading into the winter. There is a good fescue sward starting to appear on most greens and is
important the keep the good work and overseeding program up. The 4 greens that were sprayed with Rescue 6,7,9,11 have well
recovered and is now clean of any undesirable grasses. This has worked really well and I think there was not too much pain caused to
the golfer. I will be pushing hard next year to spray all 19 greens in the one blanket spray. This will really benefit the greens in the long
term. There is not a links golf course in the country that is not using rescue in some form. I recently visit Portstewart golf club and they
have blanket sprayed 9 fairways this year. They have already sprayed there greens 3 years ago. You could say we are 3 years behind.

dressing sand put on.
Sprayer The new sprayer was delivered last month

would like to take this opportunity to thank the club for
the purchase of the sprayer. With a little TLC and
looking after the sprayer will last a long time.

CHALLENGE CUP – ALL IRELAND QUARTER FINAL
Our Challenge Cup Ladies golf
team’s winning run came to an end
when they met East Cork GC in the
quarter finals of the AIG Cups and
Shields All-Ireland Finals on
Thursday 24th September in
Knightsbrook GC. East Cork were an
excellent team and went on to
become the overall winners, having
won in 2013 previously. Two
members of their team are also AllIreland under 19 2015 winners. Our
team competed strongly and put up a
brave fight against East Cork GC and
probably gave them the toughest
match on their run. Everyone on the
team was very disappointed having
put in immense preparations and are
very appreciative of the unfailing
support from members of the club.
The team consisted of Valerie
Booker, Jenny Demmel, Jean Barr,
Rosie Mullan and Catherine Frazer
with subs Maire Dufficey and Patsy
McElhone with Captain Deirdre
Connolly and assisted by Lea
McDaid. All arrangements were
brilliantly organised by Carmel
McGrath, team’s co-ordinator.

The practice round of golf in
Knightsbrook hit a hugely
successful note when Jenny
Demmel only thirteen years
of age had a hole in one on
the extremely difficult 18th
hole which is over water!!.

first weeks lesson focused on pitching. A big thanks to Niamh
Cronin and Maeve Rooney who both provided the girls with great
tips before and after the lessons with Keith.
The next lesson will concentrate on bunker shots.

Co. Sligo girls, Niamh Cronin & Ella McDermott retained the Senior Cup (despite being down 1
team member. Maeve Rooney).Niamh (12) & Ella (35) beat hot favourites Roscommon by 6 gross
shots. Niamh shot 8 over for her round securing 28 gross points and Ella had 8 gross points which
was superb scoring off a handicap of 35. Conditions were very tough with no run on the fairways.
This will be Niamh's 5th year in a row qualifying for the All Ireland Finals. Maeve, Niamh & Ella
won the 2014 All Ireland Junior Cup. Jenny Demmel & Anna Flanagan missed out this year for the
JuniorCup title, with both girls eligible next year the experience gained will be invaluable.
