Following another great
fair in July, the village of
Marion rolled out the red
carpet once again welcoming visitors and residents
with another family fun
event “Marion Days”.
Marion Days is clearly
one of of the most action
packed community festivals in the area, with good
reason - It’s FUN!! Opening Thursday evening with

Cruelty towards animals has us all
up in arms
It has been an unusual
summer for the animal kingdom topped off by Cecil, the
Zimbabwe lion. For those
that haven’t kept up with
the world news, Cecil, a
collared, star attraction at the
Hwange Game Preserve in
Zimbabwe, was lured from
his protective habitat and
killed with a crossbow by
a big game hunting dentist
from Minnesota.
Of course the outrage was
immediate and worldwide.
The dentist, now fighting
extradition to Zimbabwe,
closed his dental practice
and went in to hiding, such
was the rage against the
tooth puller. Thankfully
the Zimbabwe government
banned lion hunting after
this incident. The decline of
the lion has been well-documented with only 25,000 left
in southern Africa.
Closer to home this
columnist broke a story
about a Harrison man who
decided to get revenge for a
car repair that was taking too
long in his mind, so he set
the wife’s five kittens on fire,
burning them until nothing
was left but there skeletons.
An older cat was also found
on a fence line with his neck
snapped in to.
Richard Bancroft, well
known in Harrison, as a
strange, mentally challenged,
sometimes violent individual was jailed by police
for allegedly murdering the
cats. Having known this
individual for a few years, I
would say it was only a matter of time before his anger
got the best of him. I only
thank God, it was kittens,
and not human beings, he
allegedly murdered. Many
of us contend the government needs to overhaul how
it deals with the mentally ill.
Bancroft is certainly a poster
child as to why.
Again the outrage on
social media and in the
Harrison community has
been deafening. Pets are like
children to many of us, and
to have them meet such a
violent death gets our blood
curdling.
Just this week another
incident was reported in
Harrison. Although details
are sketchy at this writing,
a man drove his truck from
Leota to M-61 in Harrison
with a dog tied to it. When
he finally stopped the dog
was dead. People say a trail
of blood could be seen on
Old State Road. I say details
are sketchy because we
aren’t sure whether the man
knew that dog was tied to his
truck or not.
The incident is under
investigation. As soon as we
know we will post, but if the
dog was dragged intentionally, the man ought to face
some severe animal cruelty
charges. I do know, believe
it or not, that is has become
somewhat of a fad, lately for
some idiots to commit this
act of cruelty. Google it and

Jesus was the greatest
example of one who gave
Himself completely to every
task. Wherever He went the
mundane was made miraculous. Everyday contacts
were seen as divine opportunities. Common sights
became teaching tools: the
sower, the fig tree, the vine
and the branches. He gave
His best to every situation.
Traveling through Samaria, He met a troubled
woman beside a well.
Though He was tired, thirsty
and hungry, He immediately
addressed Himself to her
need. To the amazement of
His disciples, He was willing
to neither rest nor eat until
He had ministered to her
and to her many friends who
came out from the city to
hear and believe.
Compassion so directed
His life that He always had
time for hurting people. He
looked at lepers, the blind
and the poor and felt what
they were feeling. Too
often, we just look.
Follow Him into the Garden of Gethsemane. Witness
His agony as He prays so
fervently that His sweat falls
like drops of blood from
His brow. Understand that
this moving scene measures
the intensity of His life and
purpose.
Place Him on a cross.
Pound nails through His
hands and feet. Crown Him
with thorns. Hear the crowd
mock Him. Watch while
Roman soldiers gamble for
His garments beneath the
cross. By now you will have
concluded that there is nothing more He can give, but if
you listen carefully you will
hear Him guarantee Paradise
to a dying thief. He made
the most of every moment.
He lived and died with all
His heart.
With such an example,
it is not surprising to find
the New Testament writers
calling for fervency in the
Christian life. Paul begged
Christians in Rome to be
fervent in business dealings.
Peter asked his readers to be
fervent in their love for one
another. James called for
fervent praying.
And those early Christians were fervent! Churches exist around the world today because they didn’t hold

John Robert Alger
John Robert Alger passed
away peacefully in his sleep
on July 17th, 2015. Born
September 19th, 1965 in
Ann Arbor, MI to David and
Mary (Gilmore) Alger of
Marion, MI. John was a man
dedicated to serving others.
He served his country for 20
years in the Navy, retiring
in 2006 as an NDC Chief
Navy Diver last stationed
at the Naval Diving and
Salvage Training Center
in Panama City, FL. After
leaving the military, John
joined the police force first
with the Panama City Police
and later as a Deputy Sheriff
with the Bay County Sheriff
Department. He served as a
member of the SWAT team
for several years and became
a member of the Surf Rescue
Team in 2013. Last year
he was named Deputy of
the Year for his exemplary
work. He was well known
for going above and beyond
to keep his community safe.
But John’s service was
not limited to his time in
uniform. Along with Monica
Pennington, his loving partner in life, he volunteered
his time to managing and
caring for the community cat
population in Panama City.
John touched many lives in
his years of service, and he
will be dearly missed. John
is survived by his parents,
his partner Monica, his
sisters Karen J. Williams
and Sharon A. Alger Hughes
and their husbands Keith A.
Williams and Peter Hughes,
his brothers David M. Alger
(Tamara), Thomas W. Alger,
and James S. Alger (Sara),
his nephew Garrick B. Williams, his niece Kristen C.
Williams, and several aunts,

to be with the Lord on July
31, after being hit by an
automobile while driving
his horse and cart in Osceola
County. He was born on

years ago and Andrew enjoyed building pallets at his
family’s business, enjoyed
fishing and hunting. He leaves behind his

passion of plein air painting,
woodcarving, rocks, quilts,

Shepherd to mingle among

Avery wants the animal to
become accustomed to being
around groups of people,
because sometime in the
animal›s future there will be
visits to nursing homes and
schools.
In October the canine unit
will be certified for tracking
and as a bomb dog.
The sheriff›s department
is accepting donations to go
toward dog food, equipment
and training supplies for
Ryker. Ryker has replaced
“Bary,” the K9 that was put
in retirement. “Bary has the
good life after working the
road eight years,” added
Avery, who still handles Bary
but now as his pet.

with all his 70-pound might.
Pushed from behind by
two men, the 700-pound or
so “Star” wasn’t willing to
budge readily or easily during the youth and open class
dairy judging at the Osceola
4-H & FFA Fair last week.
Ryan took it in stride.
He was showing three different heifers that day and,
as any 4H member knows,
getting riled up over animal
behavior doesn’t pay in the
long run. Scores of youth from
Osceola County and parts of
Mecosta County participated
in the 140th annual event.
Swine, goats, rabbits,
llamas and alpacas, horses and poultry filled stables
while assorted crafts and
specialty handiwork adorned
shelves of exhibit halls. The
colorful midway of amusement rides and plenty of eats
satisfied spectators.
Dairy Boosters put on a
free lunch spread for dairy
families and 4-H kids. Rose
Steig of Hersey was busy
handing out free cartons
of Prairie Farms white and
chocolate milk to promote
the dairy industry.
A grant of $1500 from
Michigan Milk Producers provided 6,600 milk cartons for the event this year.
Aside from displays
of wearing apparel, ceramics,
photography, mechanics and
so much more, space was set
aside for anyone interested
in a brief respite, thanks to
the Osceola League for Arts
& Humanities whose retail
studio is in downtown Evart.
Dorothy Elliott of Evart watched over assorted
magazines, newspapers and
refreshments to choose
from. Comfortable chairs
and a cooling fan created a
smoothing space.
“The fans help,” said the
OLAH member. “Every
year this is a place to sit and
read a magazine. It’s a nice
break.”

kids and adults to hear The
Story of Loons. She recruited
young friends Gracie Ward
of Evart to dress in a loon
costume and Ali Sanford of
Stanwood to wear the Happy
Coat for Japan to aid with
her storytelling. Both girls
were showing animals at the
fair.
