Our intention was to inform the library directors of our current services, and discuss their ideas for future services. So, Tina Scott, Martin Swalboski, Megan Disbro, Chris Spink, Valle Blair and Pat Johnson have been “hitting the roads”, travelling to many of the member libraries. If we have not been to your library yet, we will be soon. These visits help us understand each library’s unique challenges and successes. And besides the enjoyment in visiting each library, one added bonus to these road trips, we have discovered many great eating places! At the end of this newsletter are some of the photos that were taken. See pgs 6-10. Also, you can go to the System’s homepage, under Planning Wiki, for our field trip notes. Click on “Visits to Member Libraries: System Consultant Team” on the right hand side. Seneca Nation Libraries both go “Live”! Page 2 Frewsburg Happenings Pat Nelson retired June 1st after almost 13 years here at Myers Library. Pat was a joy to work with and is missed. We welcome our new assistant, Rebecca Cultrara who will be working some of Pat’s hours. (Tammy has picked up the others) Becky started June 26th and will be working Tuesday evenings & Friday afternoons this summer. In the fall she will also be here Saturday mornings. She’s got Facebook experience, so guess who will be doing the majority of that. I’m still in the fledgling stage. Mr. Peter Carlo donated a 4’ x 6’ flag to the library August 1st. Our current flag is up 24/7 so gets a bit bedraggled after a few months. Since we are at one of the main intersections (and the most beautiful building in town), we need to fly a flag that is in good repair. Mr. Carlo’s generosity is very much appreciated. We have some special summer activities planned for August. -August 8th from 6:308:00, Jessie Andersen will be presenting a program about writing, getting published & writing for teens. Jessie is a Frewsburg graduate. Her fiction book, At What Cost is about teen pregnancy and is available online through www.Amazon.com, www.BarnesandNoble. com and www.Astraeapress.com . The Kindle and Nook versions cost $2.99. (The book is currently on sale for 99 cents until the end of July) August 14th from 6:30-8:00 Martz Observatory volunteers will be here to talk to us about the observatory, telescope and the sun among other things. We’ll also learn about their dish of dirt. -TBA. A program about the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery (commonly known as Guernsey Hollow Cemetery) which is being rededicated and consecrated over the Labor Day holiday. There has been a great deal of work put into repairing and cleaning up the headstones and cemetery. Guernsey Hollow Cemetery even has its own entry in the book Weird New York. I'm happy with the support we're getting from volunteers. They were pleased when I told them that our books were already showing up on SIRSI. They know it will take a long time to enter the imformation for all our books yet are willing to do it. The fact that our patrons will be able to check at home to see if we have certain books is appealing. Martin is a patient and friendly instructor. This makes it easier, of course, as some were hesitant to get into the project. As always, the support we get from system employees is outstanding. Gretchen Taft Falconer Summer Kick-off Events The Falconer Public Library recently received three large Magnifier Pages, one large print Webster’s Dictionary and one large print Thesaurus from the Falconer Lions Club. (Photo, Vern Ramsey, Lions Club, Betty Palmer, Clerk and Richard Johnson, library patron). The Lions Club has an “old glasses deposit” at the library where people can drop off old glasses for use worldwide. The Falconer Library began the 23rd Season of Band Concerts in Davis Park on Thursday nights in July. The concerts commenced with Arts Council Grants in 1989 and are now sponsored by the library. People bring lawn chairs and the Falconer Kiwanis offers refreshments. Summer Reading Club “Bee a Good Reader” encompasses readers of all ages. It is fun and open to the public. 144 participants to date. The Library is busy collecting books for the 64th Annual Book Sale which is August 9th and 10th. Page 4 Fluvanna’s Summer Events! Findley Lake Story Time Story time with Judy Hunt is every Monday morning @ 9:30 throughout the year. Judy reads stories and takes children on puppet parades. A huge hit with the children. Page 5 Franklinville’s Busy Programs This year's Blount Library Summer Reading Program has been super exciting! Every day, each child has had the chance to learn and make something new. The Quick Art Center’s Art Mobile added to the growing thrill for the summer reading program by having crafts and history lessons. All of the programs have been well attended. were reinforced throughout the rest of the week. Tuesdays allowed children in the 1st and 2nd grade to participate in a science experiment, along with a story and a craft. On Thursdays, the prekindergarten and kindergarten program was held; the children were able to participate in science experiments, listen to a story and enjoy a craft. Movie Mondays were added to this year’s program. Every Monday, a different movie has been shown that sparks creativity and teaches life skills that Wildlife Wednesdays were another new addition this year. Children heard presentations from local animal experts, who taught and entertained with a variety of facts about wild and nocturnal animals. The children even met owls, frogs, lizards, snakes, insects, and other nocturnal animals. Mrs. Amy Burton, a local teacher, gave a history lesson on the underground railroad and the local ties it had to Franklinville. To close the program, Mike Randall will perform at the "Friends Family Fun Day!" September 8th. The event will include a party and the launch of the Friends of the Blount Library's new Family Fun Program. Page 6 Photos of the libraries on our Field Visits! Road Trip!
