Smolt Truck Driver cited for DUII
On January 7, Oregon State Police troopers cited RAY LEWIS for
the crimes of DUII-alcohol, and Reckless Driving into Lane County
Circuit Court. Original News Release - Oregon State Police troopers are continuing the investigation into Tuesday Afternoon's crash
on highway 126E near milepost 11, in Cedar Flat; just east of
Springfield. Preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 2:50 p.m., a westbound Oregon Department of Fish and
Wildlife (ODFW) fish delivery tanker driving on highway 126E was
loaded with 11,000 Chinook salmon smolts and water and headed
to the Row River near Cottage Grove where they were to be released. The fish were being transferred as a result of low water concerns at McKenzie Hatchery caused by floodgate malfunctions at
Leaburg Dam, which provides water to the hatchery. As the driver,
identified as RAY C. LEWIS, 45, of Umpqua Oregon, was negotiating a curve the vehicle went off the roadway and crashed into a
power pole and some trees. The truck overturned and spilled its
contents at the roadside. All of the fish being transported died as a
result of the crash. LEWIS suffered facial and scalp lacerations and
was transported to the hospital for treatment of other unknown injuries. Alcohol is being investigated as a contributing factor in this
incident.

stating three people were in the water
after their 24-foot pleasure craft capsized. It was further reported that two of

Panhandling
Ordinance in Coos Bay
Drivers who stop at an intersection, or
business driveway, to give money to a
panhandler, will now face a $100 fine if
caught by patrolling police. An ordinance crafted after a similar one in Roseburg has gone into effect within the city
limits of Coos Bay. It basically prevents
panhandlers from standing on a curb to
ask passing motorist for money. The
ordinance, which does not disallow panhandling but addresses public safety
issues of vehicles on a roadway, was
approved by the City Council last August. New signs have been installed in
some of the high panhandling use areas
of the city.

Coos Bay Fire
Department Responds
to Bathroom Fire
News release from the Coos Bay Fire
Dept. On December 20th at 1:36 p.m.,
the Coos Bay Fire Department responded to a report of a bathroom fire at
63438 Idaho Drive, which is located in
the Englewood area of Coos Bay. The
homeowner returned home, noticed the
fire, and called 911. Another occupant
of the house was home at the time of the
fire, but was outside of the residence.
The home is owned and occupied by
Darlene Hildebrand and Flora VanLandingham. The first arriving firefighters
found light smoke coming from the
structure near the front of the home. The
home’s bathroom suffered heavy fire,
smoke, and heat damage. The rest of the
home did not suffer any damage due to
the quick thinking of the home owner.
Mrs. VanLandingham quickly called
911, and she closed both the bathroom
door and the front door of the home on
her way out of the residence. The fire
was knocked down in about 10 minutes
and within 20 minutes of arrival the fire
was fully extinguished and all of the
smoke was removed from the home.
An investigation into the cause of the
fire was conducted by the Coos Bay Fire
Department, and it has been determined
that the area of origin of the fire was in
the bathroom of the home near a portable heater. The cause of the fire appears to be heat transfer from the heater
to a plastic garbage can placed next to
the heater. The Coos Bay Fire Department estimates the fire damage to the
structure to be $3,000.00 and $250.00 to
the occupant’s contents. The owners of
the structure have insurance on the
home. No injuries were reported. If you
need additional information about this
incident, please contact Battalion Chief
Dan Crutchfield or Fire Chief Mark
Anderson at 541-269-1191.
